bordering their properties. Nevertheless, it remains possible the city could introduce a new ditching and drainage fee to pay for the work. The letter, received last week, tells residents of the rural upland areas of Bradner,

amal Dhillon has no explanation for what prompted her husband to beat and torture her over their 12-year marriage, other than his desire to exert power and control over her. She was 18 years old when she was wed through an arranged marriage. She grew up in a “healthy” home and had not previously been exposed to abuse. “Within weeks of being married, he broke my nose because I spoke out. I said, ‘Please don’t drink and drive.’ “I didn’t know that this family didn’t take orders from women.” The abuse occurred almost daily and included several attempts and threats on her life. He would choke her when she was trying to sleep or try to push her into the ocean so she would drown. He would drag her by her hair, burn her with his cigarettes, rape her and beat her. Whenever Kamal tried to leave, her husband would threaten to kill her and her family, or to take their four children away.

An Abbotsford man was sentenced last week in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack to two years in prison for sexual offences involving two young girls. Shaun Michael Sloat, 34, was previously convicted after a four-day trial of two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference of a person under 14, dating back to 2007. He had originally been charged with three additional offences – another count of sexual interference and two counts of administering a noxious substance – but those were stayed. Abbotsford Police Det. Kevin Murray, the officer who investigated the case after the girls came forward in 2009, said the convictions are considered a “major victory to youth victims of sexual exploitation by older males.” He said the two girls were “coach-surfing street youths” at the time and were vulnerable to the attentions of an older man. Sloat would hold parties at his home in Abbotsford and would allegedly supply drugs and alcohol to youth who attended, Murray said. He said Sloat began grooming one of the girls when she was just 11 years old by showering her with gifts and affection. He told her he loved her and bought her a puppy, which he used to emotionally manipulate her.
“Whenever she threatened to leave, he would beat the puppy or threaten to kill it,” Murray said. Sloat would also threaten to commit suicide, he added. The other girl was about 15 when she became involved with Sloat. “She was made to believe she was important and special to him and that other girls didn’t matter,” Murray said. Both relationships became sexual, and the girls did not realize they had been victimized until they each confided in a street outreach worker, Sorina Gibson, in 2009. The girls consented to reporting the circumstances to police, and Gibson accompanied them when they met with Murray. He commended the two girls for their courage in coming forward and testifying at the trial, resulting in Sloat’s conviction. Murray said he hopes their strength encourages other victims – either of Sloat or other offenders – to come forward. This is the second such case involving Sloat. Two other girls came forward in 2008, and he went to trial on sexual offence charges against them, but was acquitted. According to the provincial court database, Sloat has an extensive criminal record in Abbotsford, including previous convictions for assault, drug possession, uttering threats, possession of stolen property and theft.

The chamber has asked the city to implement a system that allows mobile businesses to operate across participating communities under just one licence and a secondary mobile licence. Under the current system, such a business must obtain a licence from each city in which it operates. Asaph said, under the mobile system, it is beneficial for each community to have similar licensing fees, so that one city does not have an advantage over another. He said the chamber has started canvassing its members for input on the proposal to raise the fees.
A brazen thief carrying a rock and a replica gun walked into a jewelry store in Abbotsford Tuesday morning, smashed a display case, and escaped with a number of items. The incident took place just after 11 a.m. at Michael Hill Jeweller in Sevenoaks Shopping Centre. The man was wearing a hoodie and pulled his shirt up to conceal his face just before entering the store. After stealing an undetermined number of items, he ran through the mall and fled in an older-model black sedan. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said a number of people called 911 after the incident, reporting they had heard glass being smashed and thought shots had been fired, but police ruled that out. He said investigators found some discarded clothing and a replica handgun in the area. Police were trying to track down the robber, as of press deadline Tuesday afternoon. They were reviewing surveillance video and interviewing up to 30 to 40 witnesses. obyne Adlam has had a guide dog at her side since she was 18. Now 33, she has recently completed training with her third canine, Purdy. Adlam, was diagnosed with cancer before her first birthday. Her left eye was removed and replaced with a prosthetic. She still has three per cent vision in her left eye, which underwent radiation treatment. “I do see colour. I explain it more like a lack of detail,” she said. “If things are quite out of place, even in my home, I will trip on them. But if I generally know the lay of the land, I do pretty good.” While Adlam was growing up at home, she never felt the need for a guide dog. She could find her way around with the help of parents, friends or her white cane. It wasn’t until completing her first year of university, where she lived on campus, that she decided life could be much easier with a little help. Adlam contacted BC Guide Dog Services (BCGDS), and in May 1997, she received two-year-old Candy. “The difference between having my guide dog and not having her was huge. Being able to walk around campus by myself, go to class by myself, meet people at class instead of having them come meet me. It created a much broader sense of independence.” When using a white cane, Adlam felt it

They didn’t know what to say or how to help and it created more awkward situations for me,” she said. “With a guide dog, people are much more open to getting into a conversation.” Guide dogs are trained to find curbs, stairs, doors, and to walk between their owner and obstacles. They’re also trained to watch traffic, not traffic lights. When crossing the street, it’s up to the owner to cross safely. The dog is there in case the owner makes a mistake, or a driver makes a mistake such as running a red light. “That happened to me once, with Ticky, and he literally saved my life,” Adlam said. “Only once, though. I don’t need to have it happen again.” Adlam has developed strong bonds with her guide dogs, and she or family members have kept them as pets. Ticky now lives at Adlam’s sister’s home nearby. “I like that I still get to see him, that he’s still close. I don’t know how I would
do if he wasn’t around.” Candy lived with Adlam until she died. “You spend every day putting your trust into this friend. She was even the ring bearer at my wedding,” Adlam said. According to BCGDS, a healthy dog can work up to nine years before mandatory retirement. Adlam received her third dog, Purdy, in March and he has had no problem fitting in with his new family. Adlam said her two-year-old daughter’s first words each morning are usually, “I go down and see Purdy.” “They’re more than a pet and I don’t know if people understand that until they’ve actually put their trust in an animal,” she said. Over 100 donors contributed about $15 a month to help raise Purdy. BCGDS relies on donations so that clients like Adlam do not have to pay the $37,500 cost of producing a guide dog. Discovery Trail done The final two sections of Abbotsford’s Discovery Trail were officially opened on Tuesday. Abbotsford MLAs Mike de Jong and John van Dongen joined Mayor Bruce Banman and other guests in Bateman Park on Bateman Road to mark the completion of the 30-km-plus pathway. Banman said with obesity being pandemic, anything governments can do to encourage people to exercise will ultimately pay dividends in reduced health care costs. Discovery Trail is a paved, three-metre-wide, all-season corridor that connects the east and west borders of the community. The trail began construction in 2008. Partnered with the province and local businesses, the city’s portion of the four-year project was approximately $3.7 million. I was living with a terrorist in my own home. “My husband had traumatized me to the point of complete submission.” Once, when she had escaped to her parents’ home, her father invited her husband to meet with him to talk about the situation. He convinced her dad that Kamal was the one with the issues: “I love your daughter so much, but she is a problem.” Kamal eventually left the relationship, believing that she would not survive if she stayed. Her husband died two years after she left. She is now an author, a speaker and domestic violence counsellor. Dhillon was the facilitator for a domestic violence workshop in Abbotsford on Tuesday at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium. Author of Black and Blue Sari, she told the crowd of police officers
and others that victims of abuse often suffer in silence, but the community needs to step forward when they know it’s happening. “Everything I’ve gone through, I’m using those tools now to drawn attention to this situation because if we remain silent, it will continue.” Police Chief Bob Rich said stopping domestic violence remains a primary goal of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). “The majority of violence that occurs in the community isn’t part of reported crime. It happens on the other side of the door.” He said a task force will meet with a focus group of victims to determine how police can better handle domestic violence situations and how abuse can be prevented. “How do we convince men not to beat their partners?” Rich asked. Also speaking at the workshop in Abbotsford was the APD’s domestic violence unit and members of Abbotsford Crown counsel.
Domestic violence statistics
Statistics Canada recently reported that Abbotsford-Mission ranked fourth in Canada and second in the province for reported incidents of domestic violence. According to the report, based on 2010 figures, Abbotsford-Mission had 566 reports of family violence, which translated to a rate of 325 per 100,000 population. But Abbotsford Police recorded different stats: 784 incidents of family violence in 2010 and 647 in 2011. Const. Ian MacDonald said the discrepancy is likely due to the fact that local police include more cases under the umbrella of “family violence.” The Abbotsford Police’s domestic violence unit reported in 2011 that of the 80 files handled by the unit, 70 of them resulted in acquittals and the rest resulted in convictions or the issuing of peace bonds (restraining orders).

The letter references a 2008 attempt to implement a drainage tax in these areas, similar to the drainage and dikes tax paid by residents of Sumas and Matsqui Prairie, but how the fee was not levied “due to strong local opposition.” It was signed by general manager of engineering Jim Gordon. Daren Alary was the spokesman for a citizens’ group, the Rural Ratepayers Association, which formed to fight the tax. He said the letter had a tone of retribution. “Staff didn’t like the fact we kicked up a fuss,” he said, adding
the revenue, more than $800,000 was already in the city budget for that year. “Clearly, this is the backlash for us standing up. “At the end of the day, all of these (ditches) are on city property, they don’t even belong to the individual,” he said. Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman agreed with Alary that the letter was confrontational. “I’m not impressed with how it was worded – the tone of the letter,” Banman told The News. He said it was written by staff, and he did not see it before it was mailed. “I would have kiboshed the thing. All it does is ruffle a bunch of feathers that don’t
need to be ruffled.” City manager Frank Pizzuto said there is an issue with funding rural ditch and waterways maintenance that needs to be resolved, pointing out residents of Matsqui and Sumas flats pay a ditching and diking fee. He said the city has maintained upland rural ditches out of these funds, which is “robbing Peter to pay Paul.” Alary said the proposed fee of $18.50 per acre would have cost him about $1,600 per year, which he believes is too much for ditch maintenance. He said residents of Sumas and Matsqui are charged to support infrastructure such as dikes and pump houses, which are not needed in the uplands. Brian Kingman,
who was also with the ratepayers’ group, said he has heard from 23 people who were upset by the letter. “We pay general revenue taxes for them to look after our road allowance ditches,” he said. Pizzuto said residents are not being asked to do any ditch maintenance. Council will deal with the issue of how to fund this work in the rural uplands, and he said a new fee could be reintroduced. Pizzuto apologized for the letter, and said an update will be published on the city website and released to the media. Chilliwack and Mission both maintain ditches using funds from general revenue.

Ditch this unfair idea Residents of Abbotsford’s rural uplands have found themselves in the crosshairs of city staff searching for new sources of revenue. A letter from the city engineering department to residents of Bradner, Mount Lehman, and Sumas and Vedder Mountains created serious questions and concerns. “It is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain drainage systems located in rural upland areas in Abbotsford,” the letter began. Such a responsibility has not existed previously. Despite the letter’s direction that rural residents will now need to be cutting down bushes and clearing blockages in city-owned ditches, city officials quickly clarified that position early this week. It was not the intention to order people to take on such work, the city manager assured. The letter ruffled feathers that didn’t need to be ruffled,
asserted the mayor. The only question is how rural upland drainage work will be funded in the future. According to city hall, the costs have previously been covered by a fund generated by a diking levy on Sumas and Matsqui prairie properties – something quite different, indeed. In 2009, the city proposed an uplands drainage fee, but in the face of strong protest, set the proposal aside. Now it seems it could be reconsidered. But why should rural residents be charged on top of their regular tax bill, for maintenance of city ditches? How would urban residents react if they were suddenly charged an additional annual levy for maintenance of storm water drains? How can Mayor Bruce Banman and council claim they are holding the line on taxes, held to 1.66 per cent this year, if they add significant fees for a specific group of taxpayers in the same year? That’s robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Goodbye greenhouse gas goals Tom

Views In February, this column asked the question: “Are B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets history?” The answer is contained in a new draft plan from BC Hydro on how to meet future power demand. And while it’s not explicitly stated, the answer is yes. The draft plan was released in May for discussion purposes, but so far there hasn’t been much discussion. This is surprising given some of the recommendations, such as firing up the Burrard Thermal natural gas power plant more often, and buying fossil fuel power from the North American market to keep up to demand. The plan confirms a few things that have been evident for a while. Dreams of exporting B.C. hydroelectric power are gone for the foreseeable future. And with mining ramping up along with natural gas development and population growth,
BC Hydro now projects electricity demand could rise by 50 per cent over the next 20 years. The emergence of huge shale gas sources in B.C. and across the United States has changed the North American energy picture dramatically, as U.S. electricity producers replace coal by burning cheaper and cleaner gas to ramp up power production. B.C. is losing gas market share in the U.S. – its only export customer for heating fuel and electricity use. Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially remain in place: 33 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050. If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up considerably by 2020. Premier Christy Clark has a new target for 2020: three liquefied natural gas production lines feeding high-pressure tankers at Kitimat, for export to Asia. Not only will B.C. need to buy gas-fired power from outside the province to keep up to industrial and residential demand, but the natural gas industry will need its own new gas-fired electricity to produce LNG for export.
Natural gas passed forestry as B.C.’s top resource revenue source many years ago. In 2005, the volatile gas price spiked up and produced $1 billion in windfall profits that allowed the B.C. government to buy a rare period of public sector labour peace through the 2010 Olympics.
If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up considerably by 2020. Now a glut of shale gas has pushed the North American price down from its historic range of $4 to $6 per thousand cubic feet to about $2.40. Despite that low price, gas producers in B.C. are going flat out to develop the Horn River and Montney shale gas deposits in northeast B.C. I asked David Pryce, vice-president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, why so much gas is being developed now. He said producers have
made huge investments in B.C. shale gas drilling rights, and are in an international race to supply LNG to Asian countries where the price is currently four times higher than in North America. Whatever the domestic price, B.C. gas producers have to show LNG investors such as Mitsubishi and Korea Gas that they can fill a steady procession of LNG tankers at a competitive rate. If LNG doesn’t fly here, B.C.’s gas export market soon evaporates. Currently, gas producers pay about $400 million a year in royalties, and that much again to buy up shale gas drilling rights. The industry already employs about 12,000 workers in B.C. The B.C. government has little choice but to redefine its climate targets. Instead of cutting domestic emissions, it will try to take credit for displacing coal power in Asia. Fortunately, B.C.’s main coal exports are for high-grade coal used in steel-making. Gravel pit threat The proliferation of gravel pits in the Fraser Valley is a concern for communities throughout the region. Yet another permit application further threatens the small community of Lake Errock. We have endured one, now exhausted, mine for enough years to know that gravel pits make extremely bad neighbours. Rather than reclaim the eyesore that is the old mine, as was the original promise, operators are seeking to double the size of the scar on the landscape and use the old mine as a staging and processing area, despite the acknowledged risks to traffic and the community’s concerns. It has been a year and a half since this application was made, and the community remains opposed. What has become absolutely clear is that the permit process for gravel pits is designed for approval and to exclude the affected community’s concerns. The many problems with open gravel pits so close to our community are well documented and, should this permit be granted by the provincial government, it will demonstrate that the permit process is a sham. If Lake Errock cannot stop this mine, no community can. Residents who live near the proposed site were not notified of the permit application, no sign has ever erected at the site, just a small advertisement in the newspapers of neighbouring towns. If this permit application is granted, it will guarantee years, if not decades, of conflict between the mining interests and the community. So be aware citizens of the Fraser Valley, if this permit goes through, your community could be next. Tony Rees

He plans to release the completed film first in Abbotsford and then to film festivals in Canada and elsewhere. Meanwhile, his travel adventures grabbed attention in a national contest. Supeene, 25, who also runs an online travel show (roamtravelshow. com), was among five finalists in the Defy Convention Contest held by Mazda Canada
to win a 2013 CX-5. His entry consisted of a video about his travel exploits. He was among hundreds of entries that were narrowed down to 33 semifinalists. The public then voted online for the top five, and the winner – Yung Lee of Ontario – was selected from a panel of judges. Supeene says a serious car crash in 2008 changed his approach to life, and left him with a desire to experience more of the world. He and two friends were travelling along an isolated stretch
of Chilliwack Lake Road in January 2008 en route to go snow camping when they hit a patch of ice. The vehicle flipped six times, with most of the impact hitting the passenger side, where Supeene was sitting. The car’s sunroof smashed in, cutting his head open and requiring 50 sutures to close. He also suffered a serious concussion and spent the next several months recovering. During his downtime, he got his Continued on A11

doctor’s OK to travel – something in which he had developed an interest following trips with his high school (Bateman secondary) to Egypt in 2001 and with a friend across Europe in 2004. This time, he was ready for an even bigger adventure. “What I gained from (the car accident) is that life really is just a vapour and, because we have that amount of time to get stuff done, we can’t take it for granted,” Supeene said. In 2008, Supeene and his pal Jordan West travelled across southeast Asia – Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Singapore and Malaysia – and Supeene taped the experience. During the editing process back home, he got a feel for what worked best on film and what didn’t. He most enjoyed watching the candid moments – such as the 400-kilometre trip across Cambodia in a four-seater car crammed with seven people, in which Supeene had to straddle the gear shift the whole way. The following year, Supeene filmed himself and friend Jesse Wertman on a journey to San Francisco and Yosemite National Park in California. This time, the end product was more natural and fun to watch. This inspired him to create a website where he could post his films, and add more. The B.C. trips first began three years ago as a series of small clips featuring Supeene, West, Wertman and other friends – “like a cast of characters,” Supeene says – that grew enough to accommodate a full documentary. This included cattle far ming during calving season at the Dawson Creek property owned by the parents of one of his friends, Laine Cosens. “That’s one of the best experiences I’ve ever had ... I grew up in Matsqui and I’ve smelled farms, but I’ve never been on farms.” The final trip has yet to be filmed – fishing
on the Kitimat River – and Supeene hopes to have the documentary ready by November. Next on his list is a journey along the Trans-Siberian Railway next year, with his new wife Lindsay Thomson. (The couple are getting married this summer.) But no matter where he travels, there’s one spot he likes best. “There’s no place I’d rather live than in B.C. and that’s even more evident every time I get back to B.C.”

Reach hosts summer camps

Investigate what it takes to be a curator, make news and history as a photographer and journalist, and learn new artistic techniques at The Reach Gallery Museum this summer. For the first time, The Reach will host three week-long summer camps for children ages six to 12. At the Junior Curators’ Camp from July 9-13, kids will explore the behind-thescenes world of The Reach, and create their own art work
to be exhibited in the studio. While discovering their inner curator, children will also create a heritage minute video and go on a scavenger hunt to Abbotsford heritage sites. As part of the 90th anniversary of The Abbotsford News, the On the Beat Camp from July 23-27 is for all the budding journalists of the valley. Children will sleuth out the story, create their own photograph exhibition at The Reach satellite gallery in Abbotsford city hall, and take an out-trip
to the Abbotsford News to explore the printing process. Finally, the Artists’ Camp from Aug. 13-17 will engage and enhance kids’ creative talent. Among many other techniques, they will learn papier-mâché, bead-making and still life. There will be a Plein Air workshop, a trip to a professional artist’s studio and a public art installation. The University of The Fraser Valley Theatre Department has revealed the line-up for its 2012/13 season. The first production of the year will be the comedy Once in a Lifetime by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, which follows the progress of a trio of failing vaudevillians, who attempt to boost their chances of employment by working as elocutionists in 1920s Hollywood. Once in a Lifetime is a full-blown extravaganza, filled with a host of crazy characters and farcical situations. The show will run Nov. 7-25. Next up is Earnestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout, by First Nations playwright Tomson Highway. This is the second play by Highway produced by the department, the first being the popular The Rez Sisters, during January 2000. In Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout we spend time with four First Nations women in the process of preparing a banquet for the arrival of Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The 100 years (from first contact with the First Nations people to the time of Sir Laurier’s arrival) are condensed into the time frame of one day. The show runs Jan. 9-27, 2013. The third show of the season will be William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. This will be the second production by the department of this often controversial work. The average number of days to sell a detached home or a townhome is still only a month and a half and for condos a little over two months, which is why we’re seeing benchmark prices in most communities holding steady.” The benchmark price as determined by the MLS Home Price Index (MLSHPI) of a single family detached home in Fraser Valley increased 3.6 per cent in one year. It went from $528,900 in May 2011 to $548,000 last month. In May, the MLSHPI benchmark price of a Fraser Valley townhouse was $306,800, an increase of 0.8 per cent compared to $304,500 in 2011. The benchmark price of an apartment increased by 0.7 per cent year-over-year; going from $202,100 in May of last year to $203,600 in May 2012. A benchmark is the value of a home with characteristics “typical” to a neighbourhood, whereas the average is the dollar volume divided by the number of sales – so, if a significant number of higher priced homes sell in a given month it will skew the average high.

Home sellers and buyers in the Fraser Valley took advantage of the first warm spell of the year triggering an increase in new listings and keeping sales steady last month. The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board posted 1,616 sales in May, an increase of 13 per cent compared to April, and on par with the 1,608 sales processed on the board’s Multiple Listing Service (MLS) during May 2011. At the same time, the board received 3,305 new listings, an increase of five per cent compared to April and eight per cent more than were received during the same month last year. The new inventory took the number of active listings in Fraser Valley to 10,826, an increase of 8 per cent compared to the volume available in May 2011. “Fraser Valley’s market is at an even keel. Since February, the ratio of sales compared to the number of active listings has stayed at 14 or 15 per cent, which means for every 100 properties available to purchase, 15 sold,” said board president Scott Olson. “It’s a healthy, competitive market. It gives buyers

from the Premier Baseball League to patrol the outfield for the Prairie Baseball Academy in Lethbridge, Alberta. One day a curious coach put the radar gun on his throws from the outfield, and they decided to try the hard thrower on the mound – quality pitchers are always in short supply. He worked out of the bullpen for two seasons, learning to control his fastball and throw a curve. Once he mastered the cutter, a tricky pitch to control, he started sitting down more batters. He caught the eye of the Shreveport coaching staff, and moved to LSUS last year. After a month of bullpen work, they made him a starter, and he loves the role. “You set the pace of the game,” he said. “And your team needs you to hold the other team down.” His first year he went 9-2, and struck out almost 10 batters for every nine innings pitched. This year he was the dominant pitcher on a team that perched atop the NAIA with a record of 54-6, and finished third in the NAIA World Series. He’s a late bloomer, and scouts also like that Mortensen’s arm has received little wear and tear. Now he is hoping to catch on with a major league team, get into their minor league system, and keep developing. “I need to get my velocity up a bit,” he said. “I need to get my foot in the door.” He may go back to Lethbridge for summer ball. The coach there is a Seattle Mariners scout who could help him get a free agent contract. Going to Louisiana is one of the best things that ever happened to Mortensen. Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin earned his fourth top-25 finish on the Nationwide Tour. His seven-under-par 281 left him tied for 17th in the Mexico Open at the El Bosque Golf Club in Leon. The event wrapped up on Sunday. The finish was a payday of $9,062 for Hadwin, leaving him with $53,900 in earnings so far. He ranks 39th on the tour, and HADWIN the top 25 will qualify for PGA Tour status in 2013. Local golfer Nick Taylor finished in seventh place at the 2012 Times Colonist Island Savings Open in Victoria over the weekend. In the Canadian Tour event with a $150,000 purse, Taylor shot 67-70-69-68 to finish up at -6, earning him $4,800.
Admirable feat The Norfolk Admirals completed a storybook 2011-12 season by capturing the franchise’s first Calder Cup championship with a 6-1 win over the Toronto Marlies at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto on Saturday afternoon. nee: Bustin Passed away peacefully at age 78. Predeceased by parents Lorne and Betty Bustin and daughter Susan. LONG, Patrick Allen 1938-2012 On Friday June 8th, 2012 Patrick Allen, age 73 of Mission went to be with his Lord and Saviour after his courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his mother Effie Ellen and father Charles John. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Nenita, son Kevin, daughter Colleen sisters in law Elizabeth, Amalia and Maribel; brothers in law Adelino, Leopoldo and Nerio and uncle to his numerous nephews and nieces. Patrick will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Heartfelt thank you is extended to the caring staff at ARHCC & MMH and to Dr. J.M. Smith. After a lengthy illness with cancer Bob went home to be with the Lord on June 11th, 2012 at the age of 72 years. Bob was born in Lestock, Saskatchewan on July 25, 1939. Having never been married, Bob lived a full life as a carpenter and in later years worked at Safeway as a custodian. After retirement Bob volunteered his time as President of Autumn Terrace Strata Corporation where he resided and at the Royal Canadian Legion where he was a member. Bob was an ardent fan of the Abbotsford Pilots; enjoyed the outdoors; walking around Mill Lake, camping, hiking and visiting friends in the hospital and care facilities. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Emile and Lorette Thibodeau of Lestock, SK and his good friend Eileen Ross of Abbotsford, BC. Bob is survived by his siblings Claudette (Ken) Smith of Regina, SK; Paul (MaryJo) Thibodeau of Prince George, BC; Armand (Claudette) Thibodeau of Nipawin, SK and Rita Mitchell of Vancouver, BC and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held on June 15th at 2:00 pm at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Avenue, Abbotsford, BC. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.
