Start smiling again There are plenty of reasons to take care of your smile. Mother Teresa said, “Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” Anthony J. D’Angelo wrote, “Smile. It is the key that fits the lock of everybody’s heart.” Actor and magician Chris Hart stated, “All the statistics in the world can’t measure the warmth of a smile.” If the smile is a reflection of the soul, one that reveals the soul’s powers and virtues, just imagine what you’re losing out on if you are too shy to show a few gaps in your teeth. Fortunately, denturists today can offer a multitude of smile solutions with prostheses (dentures) and implants. While dentists care for teeth, gums, jaws and oral infections, denturists specialize in the elaboration and fabrication of dental prostheses. A wide range of prostheses are available. After studying the structure of your mouth, including the position of the teeth with the mouth open as well as closed, a denturist will be able to suggest the best solution for you. He or she will then build you a tailor-made prosthesis that will be as comfortable and as natural looking as possible, depending on your gums, lips, and jaws. Even after your prosthesis is perfectly adjusted, you will continue to see your denturist for annual checkups to ensure that the fit remains optimal. It also advised that prostheses be replaced about every few years. Your comfort and your beautiful smile depend on it!

Summer camps: something for everyone Winter still holds us in its icy grip, but it’s already time to start planning for summer camp. Sleep-away camp is a character-building experience for children who are ready for it. If you want your child to attend camp when it’s convenient for your summer schedule, you’ll need to get busy now and reserve a space early. Because summer camps are increasingly in demand, take the time to do some research and see what kind of camp will best suit your child. There is a lot to choose from, so you don’t want to end up sending him or her to just any camp simply because it’s one where they still have some places left. It is essential to take into account the interests of your children in order for them to have an enjoyable and enriching experience. There are conventional camps, which offer a wide range of outdoor activities and group games. Other

camps offer special interest activities, such as specific sports, visual arts, music, cooking, or even the sciences, including astronomy. The length of stay can also vary. Some parents prefer to stick with day camps or short stays so their children won’t get homesick. Others opt to send their children for a week or more to develop their independence. Children living with a physical or mental disability can also benefit greatly from a stay at a summer camp. Some camps are specifically adapted to meet such needs and have qualified personnel trained to care for them 24 hours a day. Whatever type of camp a family is looking for, it is always advisable to visit it first or speak with camp staff on the phone — this will help you be sure their priority is the well-being of the children and their focus suits the needs and interests of your children.

PHOTO: JUPITERIMAGES / THINKSTOCK

It is important to choose a summer camp that is adapted to a child’s interests.

Specialized summer camps are now allowing young artists to develop their passion on an intensive basis. Summer art camps offer classes which are both educational and lots of fun. Children can develop their skills and broaden their interests while being supervised by competent instructors, all in an entertaining atmosphere. There are many different facets to the world of visual arts. At summer camp, young people can learn about kinds of media that they have fewer opportunities to explore at home or school, such as China ink, pastels, charcoal, oil paint, and clay. They acquire theoretical notions and draw inspiration from the great masters of the art world. Some art camps even organize an exhibit at the end of the camp so that friends and family can see all the creations.

PHOTO: JUPITERIMAGES / THINKSTOCK

Theatre is a great way to break out of one’s shell. At summer camp, children will be able to set aside their shyness and learn to express themselves in public. They will improve their memorization skills and they will also be able to study different acting methods. Dramatic art includes many behind-the-scenes activities, and during theatre camp children will be introduced to many of them, including lights and sound, costumes, makeup, and stage design. The performing arts are also a great way for children to discover their talents, develop a work ethic, and build self-esteem. All branches of the performing arts teach students about teamwork. At a performing arts camp, children are given the opportunity to work on a project throughout their stay and then have the very rewarding experience of presenting it in front of family and friends.

Summer art camps allow children to develop their creativity.

Paradise for budding scientists Being in a stimulating environment and being surrounded by enthusiastic experts are the greatest motivators for children to spend time at summer camp. That is why so many specialized camps are now available, and there’s certainly no shortage of choice for budding scientists. When children are passionate about a subject it is very important to encourage them. Sciences take up only a very small part of school curriculums, so young science fans are ecstatic when they are given the chance during their summer vacations to deepen their knowledge, carry out experiments, and see a whole new world of discovery opening up before their eyes. Many specialized science camps now exist and offer a wide range of activities connected to this fascinating subject. Workshops, demonstrations, group activities, and experiments are always on the menu. These science camps often concentrate on very specific areas such as astronomy, physics, computer sciences, or archaeology. For parents who feel that their children may suffer from an academic overdose, they should realize that a camp is considered to be specialized if they offer two hours of a specific subject every day. That means there’s plenty of time during the rest of the day to have fun and run off some energy! Because summer camps are increasingly popular these days, it is important to register early to get a place, no matter what interests your child may have. Many specialized science camps now exist with a wide range of activities on the menu.

HERE COMES SUMMER! When spring is in the air and the weekends are warmer, the time has come to open up the cottage or the camping trailer. Just like in the film, “On Golden Pond”, starring Jane Fonda and Henry Fonda, we return with light hearts to remove the sheets protecting the furniture, to clean, dust, let the fresh air in and put the dock back in the water; in short we prepare to greet the summer! But how about doing things Getting your summer home ready differently this year? Why not take will allow you to make the most of your summer. advantage of this beautiful time of year to open up the cottage or the camping trailer with ecology, security and colour in mind. Ecology: Opening up the cottage or the camping trailer without endangering the environment means never releasing any chemical products into the environment. You can clean all the nooks and crannies of your retreat, but avoid dumping the dirty water into the lake... even if the soap used was biodegradable and phosphate-free. Security: If you decide to take any valuable items to your summer home, be sure to have them engraved in case of theft. It is also strongly recommended to take an inventory of the contents of your place and to take photographs of each room in case of fire. Lastly, ensure that nothing has been damaged during your absence. Colour: This summer, rugs and chairs made from wicker, cane and recycled fabrics will be all the rage for summer homes. Choose bright palettes of colour, trendy stripes and scatter rugs all over the place: on the grass, the beach and the balcony... it’s stylish and it’s soft on the feet!

Six latest trends in camping Over the last few years, camping has recovered its reputation and has even become a hot trend. To prove this, here are six of the latest trends which are propelling camping into unexplored territory. “Economic” camping pleases young families as it only requires a small budget to be able to leave on holiday, even more so if you choose campgrounds with just one or two stars. What’s more, this type of camping doesn’t make any social distinctions. “Natural” camping continues to evolve due to its environmental aspect and

experiencing nature in all its glory. The camper contemplates the view, breathes in the scent of the forest, feels the freshness of the grass underfoot and lives in harmony, simplicity and freedom. “Top-of-the-line” camping involves luxury installations, including swimming pools, tennis courts, exercise rooms, restaurants... There we find various leisure activities to put a touch of the city into the country. “Unusual” camping responds to the demand for change. Consumers wanting to please their children with treetop cabins, fully-equipped trailers, tepees... “Eco-friendly” camping is different from “natural” camping at this time in our history when environmental questions preoccupy the entire world. Camping thus becomes an eco-responsible choice. Under the canvas you can now find green accessories such as waste separators, watersaving equipment, solar water heaters, etc. And lastly, “practical” camping insists on colanders, bowls, salad bowls and funnels which can be folded and unfolded at will, dishes as practical for your outdoor expeditions as for your kitchen or office.

What type of camper are you?

A Zen garden Zen gardens originated in China and were designed as places for Buddhist monks to pray. They welcomed the devout into outdoor areas where nature had been stripped down to the bare essentials, in a reflection of their spiritual beliefs. Later, the Japanese developed their own outdoor areas in the form of meditation gardens. These influenced today’s Zen style with its minimalist approach and a pared down layout where repetition of design and plant species are favoured over diversity. If you would like to create your very own Zen garden, be sure to choose small trees with white blossoms — white is a highly symbolic color for the Japanese. Opt for magnolias or apple trees, which will also exude unforgettable fragrances. White azaleas are also perfect for this type of garden, along with dwarf pines, ferns, grasses, and hostas. Green lawns are not normally part of Zen gardens. Ground cover that creeps around stones is preferred, such as thyme, white violets, or periwinkle. Wood or bamboo furniture is perfect, accompanied by orientalstyle screens or delicate archways. Stone lanterns and Japanese style pots compliment the arrangements. Another must in a Zen garden is a discreet water feature, even just a rock with a small hollow in the middle would be ideal. After all, the secret to Zen garden success is moderation. Zen gardens require little maintenance work and are great for small areas, as they are made up almost entirely of stones, pebbles, and plants in repeating patterns. Now, close your eyes and visualize a wooden bridge over a stream of white pebbles and a bed of creeping thyme. What a soothing place to relax and catch up with yourself! Keep in mind contemplative serenity when creating your Zen garden.

To seed or not to seed, that is the question

Summer Lawn Care: (NC)—Depending on your patience, perseverance and budget, the choice of whether to seed your lawn or sod is really up to you. Sodding is fast, convenient and fairly easy to do. Simply buy the sod, cut away any dead or damaged grass, rake the soil and add some fertilizer to it. Once the site is ready, simply lay down the sod and tromp it with your feet or a roller. But sod is more expensive than grass seed and requires daily watering. Seeding, on the other hand, is inexpensive, but it requires a bit more preparation and the watering regime lasts longer. If you choose this route, make sure you buy the right kind of seed for your area (your local garden centre can help). Although spring planting is good for vegetables and ornamentals, seeding your grass is best done in late summer or early fall. Whether you sod or seed, you can grow a healthy lawn without needing pesticides to keep your new blanket of green looking beautiful. Health Canada, the department that regulates pesticide products across the country, goes into a lot more detail about sodding and seeding in its “Starting a Lawn” fact sheet, which you can download at www. healthcanada.gc.ca/pmra. While on the site, take a look at the other fact sheets on lawn care, many of which outline step-by-step instructions for controlling pests without the use of pesticides.

A restrained décor will please the majority of potential buyers.

Staging your home for a rapid sale furniture. This will highlight the positive aspects of your living space, such as open areas, ease of circulation, size, light, and the main purpose of each room. It is important to create as much room as possible so that visitors have an impression of space and dimension. To do this, keep only the furniture necessary for daily life, such as the kitchen or dining room table, the sofa, chairs, and other decorative elements that are both simple and neutral. Walls, shelving units, and kitchen counters should be populated

very sparingly. Art works, family photographs, and ornaments are all elements that could put potential buyers off. Personal items tend to distract visitors and prevent them from being able to imagine living in your home. The idea is to depersonalize your rooms, to make them neutral by opting for a white wall instead of your beloved flowery wallpaper, for example, which not everyone will like. Choose a restrained, elegant decor that will attract a young couple as much as a family.

Did you know that most potential buyers form an opinion of the home they are visiting in the first 90 seconds? That 90 percent of people are incapable of imagining living in a home that has not been prepped? There are some very specific techniques you can apply to neutralize your property so that it will please the majority of buyers, influence the sale price, and reduce the length of time your home is on the market. Most people think that after the warranty on their car is over, they don’t need to keep returning to their dealership. They might be very wrong! In some cases it could cost a little more at a dealership to have a car repaired or maintained. There are, however, some advantages to doing so. In most cases, a dealer will have the right expertise to correct, repair, and properly maintain your vehicle. What’s more, their technicians will know exactly where and what to look for when working on your car, thus saving some precious time that another mechanic might have to bill you for. Also, the dealership will have the proper tools to fix, repair, or maintain your vehicle, not to mention that they are more likely to have on hand the replacement parts for your vehicle. In the event of a major problem, a dealer will be able to find you a replacement vehicle, sometimes at a very reasonable price. For short-term needs, such as one day, they will likely be able to provide you a courtesy car or a shuttle bus service. If you have your car serviced regularly at a dealership, the chances are they will be able to catch any small problems before they become bigger ones. They will also be informed of any recall repairs that you are eligible for. That alone makes it worthwhile to return to your dealer, because it will save you money on the long term. Having your car repaired at a dealership has many advantages.

It’s cool to drive carefully Driving doesn’t just mean learning to control a vehicle and being familiar with road signs. It also involves knowing how to behave responsibly and safely while sharing the road with others. Some people seem to experience a sudden personality change when they get behind a steering wheel. Even-keeled and responsible people can suddenly become speed demons, too happy to “flip the bird” at another driver in frustration. Car manufacturers often take advantage of this change in people’s behaviour when they advertise the freedom and excitement that purchasing their products can procure. What kind of driver will you be? Will you use your car to attract attention or impress your friends? Do you have impulse-control difficulties? Are you a genuine thrill seeker? However you see yourself, keep in mind that people who love speeding aren’t always aware of the dangers involved and often overrate their driving skills and their ability to react quickly. Likewise, the more stressed they are, the more likely they are to press a little too hard on the gas pedal. Even worse, when speed is combined with alcohol and drugs, there is very often a heavy price to pay — both financial and in human terms. Your first car: If you’re thinking about purchasing your first car while you’re still at school, you may not be rolling in money. To get your hands on a good deal in terms of insurance and coolness factor, opt for an inexpensive used vehicle that doesn’t have too much power under the hood. And when you pick up your friends, remember that they want you around for a long time to come. It’s all about being sensible and responsible while enjoying your new-found freedom.

We will be introducing Second Yoga Jeans to Kamloops. They are a great fit and have a nice high rise, with fashion leg widths and colors. For the basic jean, it is nice to have a dark wash on a mature lady as they look more slimming on the body. We also carry the Oprah approved Teezers, which are fabulous for sucking in the figure and making us look smoother and slimmer. Every woman should have at two in her closet! There are many tricks of the trade to help us look great and feel great in what we wear. Our job is to find the right pieces for you!

Are you ready for strong colours? This summer, acid colours will be all over the place. Watch out, because these are the colours that are so dazzling you need sunglasses to look at them! For all you daring men out there, this will definitely be the way to make a fashion statement this

season. Keep in mind that mastering the art of wearing these strong colours requires a certain talent. Learn how to combine them with neutral shades in order to tone down the overall effect. To give flair to any outfit, think primary colours, especially warm shades such as red and orange. Ocean colours, particularly cyan and indigo, are also popular this summer. Some brave souls will dare to sport extra-bright versions of these colours — we might even call them fluorescent. Once again, as long as they’re used with discretion, all these shades are acceptable. The combining of the traditional dark spring raincoat with bright orange pants, as proposed by Soïa & Kyo, is a marvellous interpretation of this trend towards vibrant colours. Embrace the style by wearing just one touch of it in any outfit. This hint of vibrant colour will dominate the ensemble while highlighting a sleek style and the lines of the body. One final word of warning: this trend should only be adopted if you love being classified as unconventional. A striking style is great, as long as it’s not taken too seriously by the wearer. And don’t forget: once fall arrives, these colours will have to be stored away for another summer. Touches of vibrant colour are all the rage this summer. (Photo Soïa & Kyo/Jimmy Hamelin)

The timeless raincoat Take inspiration from the great designers in order to stay warm and dry during the cool weather of early spring. A great style to adopt at this time of year is one that we’ve seen on fashion catwalks many times over the years: the raincoat modeled on the Burberry trench coat. Designers are continually updating this ever popular clothing item. If you want to stay with the trend this year; all you have to do is look at the latest styles the stars are wearing. The first step in choosing the perfect raincoat is to decide which variation is right for you. Do the straight lines of the military style appeal to you, or perhaps the more feminine effect of the flounced cape? Many options are available, allowing you to personalize your “trench” to your heart’s content.

There are also many ways to wear a raincoat at this time of year. If you are burning with impatience to flaunt your legs after a long, cold winter, then combine the raincoat with a pencil skirt for the ultimate in leggy looks. Bear in mind that a wide belt wrapped tight at the waist of a trench coat is extremely flattering for most figures. Worn over jeans and a white tailored blouse, a wide open raincoat with the belt looped around and knotted at the back creates a casual boyish look. However you wear it, this timeless and highly versatile fashion item should certainly take a front row seat in all spring wardrobes. It is well worth investing in a good quality trench coat that will last for seasons to come.
