Hollywood has again turned its focus on Downtown Abbotsford. Montrose Avenue is the site for a film crew shooting the Christmas movie Holiday Spin. The film is a sequel to the movie Trading Christmas, which was also shot in Abbotsford two years ago. Holiday Spin tells the story of Reuben, the owner of a dance studio who is busy preparing his students for a Christmas Eve competition when his studio is hit by hard financial times. The made-for-television film is being shot for the Lifetime Movie Network and stars Ralph Macchio. “He’s actually playing the father in the movie, which really baffles me because I still remember him as the Karate Kid,” said Tina Stewart, executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association. Filming is scheduled to continue until Saturday.

Bevan Avenue Wells Operation Commencement Notice The City of Abbotsford received approval to increase the capacity of four existing water wells in order to meet peak demand for water during summer months. The wells are located in the southwest corner of Mill Lake Park. The current pumping capacity is 290 L/s. A total of 2,505 million litres of water may be drawn from these wells annually, between May and September. The City of Abbotsford will provide notiÂżcation to the public at least two weeks in advance of the annual start-up of the wells. For the 2012 season, the Bevan Avenue wells are expected to begin operating from early July onward, as needed. A critic of garbage incineration says she’s now more optimistic Metro Vancouver’s strategy to procure a new waste-to-energy plant for the region could lead to alternative technologies being used. Vancouver Coun. Andrea Reimer said she does not believe the process now advancing is skewed in favour of a conventional incinerator over emerging low-emission technologies like gasification. Metro’s board earlier agreed to reduce the proposed capacity of the new plant from the 500,000 to 600,000 tonnes previously envisioned to between 250,000 and 400,000 tonnes in light of declining garbage volumes. The board also decided it would issue a single request for proposals later this year to handle all the garbage, rather than two bid calls with one reserved only for alternative technologies. Some directors had previously warned that one winner-takeall process would inevitably favour incineration, which has better efficiencies of scale. But Reimer said she thinks the decision is the right one. “The idea of splitting into two streams, while it guarantees a tonnage for more appropriate technologies, also necessarily guarantees a minimum tonnage for mass burn incineration,” Reimer said. She said the final decision on whether incineration or alternative technologies are used would heavily depend on the bid evaluation criteria, which Metro has yet to determine.

Tar sands in an aging pipeline is a major concern of a new citizens’ group opposed to the proposed twinning of an oil pipeline that runs through the Fraser Valley, including Abbotsford. The Pipe Up Network is an off-shoot of a loose organization of concerned residents that began meeting last March. The “surprising news” that the Trans Mountain Pipeline owned by Kinder Morgan also carries Alberta tar sands in the form of diluted bitumen led to the creation of the Pipe Up Network at a meeting held in Abbotsford in April. The pipeline has

been carrying crude oil from Alberta to Vancouver since 1953, but the company reportedly started loading bitumen onto tankers in Burrard Inlet in February 2012. Wendy Major, a retired school teacher in Chilliwack, said a bitumen spill in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2010 “caused health problems for the people and devastated local business.” The pipeline owned by Enbridge Energy Partners reportedly spilled an estimated 843,000 gallons of diluted bitumen into a tributary of the Kalamazoo River. The cleanup and health impacts raised questions about B.C.’s ability to respond to a similar disaster. Kinder Morgan

wants to build a second pipeline here to increase daily capacity to 750,000 barrels from the current 300,000 barrels. Opposition organizer Sheila Muxlow said if a spill occurs, the bitumen would sink to the bottom of the aquifer, unlike conventional oil which would float on top of the water. “If there was a crack in that pipeline near the aquifer, there’s no doubt that product will sink right into the aquifer,” she said. The bitumen, diluted with “volatile substances” so it can flow through the pipeline, is also “significantly more corrosive” than conventional oil, she said, increasing the risk of a rupture.

Michael Hale, a Pipe Up member in Chilliwack, said there’s growing concern about the proposed twinning project. “What is alarming a lot of people is this very old pipeline ... goes over our aquifer, over our rivers and near our schools all the way down the Fraser Valley,” he said. “There are a lot of people who are concerned from up and down the valley, from Hope all the way to Vancouver.” Pipe Up is holding an infor mation meeting on Tuesday, June 12 at the Sardis Secondary School, 45460 Stevenson Rd. in Chilliwack. Abbotsford council will soon be asked to support either the developer of a proposed Bradner industrial park which will bring thousands of jobs and billions in economic activity, or opponents who will lobby to keep close to 300 acres of farmland in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). Ron Emerson of the Emerson Real Estate Group told The News that his plan would create $4.7 billion in economic activity, and close to 5,000 jobs, according to the draft economic impact study. The developer, who also created the two million-square-foot Kingswood Industrial Park in Richmond and others in the Lower Mainland, said he needs the approval of Abbotsford council to approach the Agricultural Land Commission with an application to the property taken out of the ALR. He expects to have a plan before council in six to eight weeks. The property lies near the LangleyAbbotsford border, next to 700-acre Gloucester Industrial Estates. In the conceptual stage, it would be bordered on the south by Highway 1 and to the north by 56th Avenue, while the western boundary would be approximately Baynes Street, and Lefeuvre Road in the east. Stepping away from the stereotypical cat-in-a-tree rescue, the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service saved a Rottweiler from a ravine on Thursday. At about 10 a.m. firefighters responded to a public assistance call at 34481 Laburnum Avenue, where they arrived to find the big dog trapped in a gully. The 11-year-old dog named Taz was found under a log, about 20 meters down the slope, and was suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia. “The Abbotsford Fire Technical Team was able to successfully retrieve the dog by utilizing ropes, pulleys and a basket stretcher,” indicated a press release from the fire hall. “The rescue was completed in approximately one hour and the dog was fortunate to have survived the ordeal.”

An Abbotsford man has been fined $2,500 for his role in a mob scene outside of a Punjabi comedy show in March 2011. Jasminder Sidhu, 36, was initially charged with causing bodily harm and assault with intent to resist arrest, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of assault. His brother, Chamkaur Sidhu, 38, was sentenced last September to one year’s probation after pleading guilty to a charge of mischief in connection to the same incident.

The two were attending a comedy show called Naughty Baba Back in Town at the Abbotsford Arts Centre on March 18, 2011. The show was cancelled due to concerns about too many tickets having been sold for the number of seats available. Many people had not been seated when the cancellation was announced, and a ruckus ensued. Chamkaur smashed a window at the theatre entrance, and Jasminder kicked and punched one of the police officers who had been called to the scene.

My View I’ve received that phone call. It was a Sunday morning, 10 to 6, and my cell phone was incessantly ringing across the room. I tried to roll over; tried to drown out the noise with a pillow on my head; who would be calling me at such a senseless hour; I did not want to pick up that phone. Maybe something inside me knew it couldn’t be good. When I finally answered the call, it was my big brother on the other line. His voice was shaky, but he did his best to stay calm. “[Our brother’s] been airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital,” he said. “You’re the closest. You have to go now. We’ll be there as soon as

we can.” I’ll never forget those words. It was seven years ago this month that I found out my oldest brother, who I’ve looked up to my whole life, had been in a serious car accident – not even two minutes away from his house. He had been drinking and driving. I was the first to arrive at the hospital. After giving the ER clerk my brother’s pertinent information, I was placed in a “family room” to await the doctor on duty to fill me in. I had no idea what to expect, I didn’t know how bad it was, I didn’t know if I’d ever see that teasing twinkle in his eyes again, If I’d ever be able to hug him, confide in him, or hear him call me ‘Kate’ again. I tried to hold it together. I knew I had to be strong. But when I overheard a paramedic across the way say to his pals, “If you ever need a reason not to drink

But he did lose his spleen, and will likely have his short term memory compromised forever. It wasn’t the first time he had drove drunk, but it was the last. Listening to Kevin Brooks’ story at G.W. Graham last week brought those heart-wrenching, tear-inducing, fear-ridden memories back. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how experienced you are, you are not invincible. Luck does run out. letters Show troops support MP Ed Fast likes to say that the Conservative Party supports our troops. The facts say otherwise. The Conservatives are cutting post-traumatic stress and suicide prevention programs for soldiers returning from Afghanistan, even though suicide rates doubled last year. All told, they are chopping over $200 million from Veterans Affairs, including cuts to The Last Post Fund, which helps low-income veterans get a proper burial. It took a six-year battle in our courts to shame them into not clawing back the pensions of our disabled veterans. Mr. Fast needs to learn that supporting our troops means

giving them real respect. It means providing mental health support to cope with the horrors of war. It means refusing to nickel-and-dime veterans whose service has left them disabled. It means respecting the privacy of their medical records. We make a promise to our men and women in uniform that, in exchange for their commitment and sacrifice, we will be there for them when they come home, to provide support to them and their families. High school buildings The last couple of editions of the “The News’ have been filled with wonderful and interesting pieces of journalism regarding Abbotsford Senior High. As a 1963 graduate I read them with interest however I was saddened that the recording of the history was not correct. The building that is being written about opened in 1952 as Abbotsford Junior High School. The building of

Abbotsford Senior High School was in 1955 (as recorded) but it was actually the building on the south side of the field that was torn down a couple of years ago. The Panthers basketball games were always held in the junior high gymnasium as it was the larger of the two. These two schools remained in their respective building until the mid-1960s when a switch was made with a very big

ceremony involving the students walking across the field. A point of interest is that AJHS was built in 1952 for $535,000.00 which included the construction of 13 elementary classrooms at other locations. In 1955, the now torn down ASHS was built at a cost of $735,000 which included the construction of six elementary classsrooms at other locations. Lorne Dyck

Dick was the proud owner of Macfarlane Insurance in Langley, BC. for the past 32 years. Macfarlane Insurance was not just Dick’s business, it was a very important part of his life. He considered every client important and treated them with care and compassion and many became lifelong friends. He was passionate about holidays, spending many weeks each year in Palm Springs with family and friends. He loved his cars and he loved to drive them, especially down the Hope-Princeton highway - but above all else, he loved his family.
