Saanich Parks and Recreation Active Living Guide

Summer Camp Information Saanich has everything you need to have the best summer yet... Skills Development and Learning – with an Emphasis on Fun! Kids just want to have fun, and they should! They learn and grow through play. Creative arts, the challenge of games, sports and outdoor activities, opportunities for self-expression and exploration are vital to their development. The value of play to a child’s growth is the foundation of all our camp services. CHOICES Locations – more than a dozen location around Saanich Specialities - geared to your child’s interests and skills Ages – preschool, school age, preteen and youth programs Flexibility – full days or half days plus varied start and finish times (extended care starts as early as 7:30am and ends as late as at 5:00pm)

LEADERSHIP & REPUTATION Our summer camps are known for their excellent reputation, and our camp leaders are chosen for their experience, abilities and dedication. Our staff team is committed to ensuring a safe and fun day camp experience for your child.

SAFE PLACES FOR KIDS Your child’s safety is our priority! Children are fully supervised throughout the day and our facilities are checked daily for safety. Our leaders have current first aid, criminal record checks and have received training in child protection procedures, leadership, diversity and cultural awareness.

FORMS Parents are required to complete and submit a Participant Information Form for each child with emergency contact information and authorized pick-up information. It is the District of Saanich’s policy that children under 10 years of age must be signed-in and signed-out of daycamp programs by an authorized caregiver. These forms are available at our registration desks or online at https://recreation.saanich.ca/reconline/forms/forms.shtml

EPI-PENS & SEVERE ALLERGIES If your child carries an Epi-pen or has allergies please make sure this is noted on the Participant Information Form. Our staff are prepared to deal with allergies but they do need to know about them to ensure the safety of your child.

AGES & GROUPS Each camp has a specific age range for which the activities are appropriate. Registration of children outside the given age range of a camp may not be possible.

WHAT TO BRING For full-day camps, your child needs to bring a knapsack packed with a healthy lunch and two snacks, water bottle, a hat, sunscreen, swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes. For part-day camps your child needs to bring a knapsack packed with a healthy snack, water bottle, a hat and sunscreen. Use of vending machines is not permitted during camp hours. Depending on the camp, additional items may be required. Please leave electronic devices at home (iPods, Nintendo DS etc.). You will receive information about this on the first day of camp. Please remember to label all your child’s belongings!

THE FIRST DAY You may need to stay for a few extra minutes on the first day so our staff can ensure your child is signed in and we have all of the required information from you. Please feel free to stay until your child is comfortably settled and we have answered any questions you may have.

POOR WEATHER Camps run rain or shine unless you are notified otherwise. For our playground programs we have arranged alternate inside spaces in the event of rain.

YOUR COMMUNITY – YOUR PROGRAMS Saanich summer camps are your programs. We actively encourage your input and support. If you have questions about a camp, or information about how we can make sure your child’s stay at camp is successful, please call us. The programmer of the camp is happy to hear from you and help with any questions or concerns. We want your child to have an excellent camp experience.

Once upon a time, there was a world without video games and movies. This was a time when adventures were lived and remembered. Through animation, thrilling games, hilarious songs and a little creativity we bring the summer to life for your children. Each week is a new chapter in our story that will navigate us to the true meaning of summer camp. Join us for one week or the whole summer in “the land of PhuN”! Saanich Neighbourhood Playground Programs are safe, well supervised, high quality and affordable day camp programs delivered in a park setting with plenty of active, imaginative play. Staff are enthusiastic, have current first aid, criminal record checks and have received training in child protection procedures. S.N.P.P. ADVENTURES 2012 It was a dark and stormy night in the Land of PhuN. A struggling postman, though usually jolly, clutched a large and important package tightly to his chest as he walked up a gigantic hill through the sleet, hail and wind towards the King’s Castle. All at once a great gust ripped the bundle from the postman’s hands tossing it and its contents into the air, sending cascading flurries of paper across the sky. To the, now, not-so-jolly postman’s horror, white pages quickly dotted the horizon, distant images of giant insects, magical flutes, and... was that a flying monkey? SNPP Campers far and wide! We need your help to find and deliver this package to the King (and his men) and save the Land of PhuN from a world without stories.

Have you ever seen a Zink? Did you ever meet a Phlink? If you did, you win. Now let’s take a swim! Water is here and water is there! Water water everywhere! Thing 1 and Thing 2 tell us don’t get too wet; the stories of PhuN are out there yet!

WEEK 2 JULY 9TH – 13TH: MUGGLE MYSTERIES Muggles unite! The Department of Mysteries is seeking our help to solve the riddles and puzzles of the Land of PhuN! Stick close to your new friends this week and work together; the land of PhuN can’t do it without you!

WEEK 5 JULY 30TH – AUGUST 3RD: A MESSY RUMPUS Put on your wolf suit and make mischief of one kind… and another! This week will be a wild and messy rumpus in the Land of PhuN. Wild things of all shapes and sizes are welcome as we get in trouble paintin’ our leaders and makin’ mud pies. Yum!

WEEK 6 AUGUST 7TH – 10TH: WHAT A PEACH!

WEEK 3 JULY 16TH – 20TH: SOME PIG! The tiniest of friends will make the biggest of differences this week, but we need to watch the corners for her important messages. Learn to be a real scientist and observe weird, wild and wonderful things. This is the Land of PhuN after all!

WEEK 8 AUGUST 20TH – 24TH: NEVER NEVER OLYMPICS

Nature in the Land of PhuN sure is peachy! Slippery, slimy, prickly and... not-so-puny ladybugs, caterpillars and worms! If they work together, SNPP Campers will overcome some real obstacles this week; let’s just hope their efforts are fruitful!

Olympics in the Never Never Land of PhuN are filled with adventure and risk. Tink tells us if we believe, we can do anything we put our minds to. But watch out, the one-handed man could show up anytime!

If you have an interest in recreation, working with children, and are looking for work experience this summer, this program could be for you! The Youth Summer Internship program supports youth aged 15 years + in building employment readiness skills through a month long mentored placement in one of the many summer camp programs offered by the Municipality of Saanich.
