Northerners urged to get tested for HIV/AIDS DELYNDA PILON newsroom@pgfreepress.com

The video flashes through scenes of people, some of whose faces are well-known in the city, discussing some quick facts and fallacies about HIV AIDS. It’s interesting, but when the scene changes and one young lady starts speaking, it becomes riveting, raw and honest. Brave enough to let out the pain she lives with because of the stigma attached to her disease, she tells everyone that just because she has the disease she is not garbage. The roomful of people gathered to celebrate the launch of the STOP HIV/AIDS education and awareness campaign in Prince George are quiet. The presenter admits to biting the inside of her cheek when she watches the frames slip by. Though she’s seen it a number of times, it can still bring tears. STOP in this campaign stands for Seek and Treat for Optimal Prevention and is running from 2010 through to 2013 in B.C. It will focus on increasing HIV testing and early treatment for all ages groups. Learning to fish The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC) in partnership with Rio Tinto Alcan will be offering an expanded series of Learn to Fish classes at three locations in Prince George and Vanderhoof over the next three months. Over the past six years, more than 72,000 children and adults have taken a Learn to Fish class with the FFSBC where they have learned fishing techniques, fishing etiquette, basic fish biology and tips for fish conservation and habitat protection. Significantly, a survey of former Learn to Fish class participants found that most participants continued to fish on their own after completing the class. Classes will be offered at: • Shane Lake in Prince George on June 9, July 7, July 24, August 8 and August 16; • Tachick Lake Resort near Vanderhoof on June 20, July 13, July 18 and August 1; • Nulki Lake Resort near Vanderhoof on June 10, June 30, July 14 and August 20. Pre-registration for the Learn to Fish classes is required, but all necessary gear is provided and participation is free. Those interested should contact Anne-Marie or Kara at 250-640-1767 or visit www.gofishbc.com for more information. Advertorial

PIONEER

There is probably no TV commercial as emblematic as Chrysler’s when it shows the slogan: “Imported from Detroit”. Indeed, the Chrysler line-up of vehicles represents perfectly the best of the American automotive industry. Still, there are not many models in that line-up — only three — but all are offered in many variations that make the brand attractive. The most significant vehicle to represent Chrysler has to be the mighty 300 sedan. Already an icon in the industry, the 300 was slightly redesigned over the last few months. It is available in many versions, powered by a great new V-6 engine that is now available with an eight-speed automatic transmission or with one of the HEMI V-8s, including the 470-horsepower version found under the hood of the SRT-8. The 200 replaces the older Sebring, not only as a sedan but also as a beautiful convertible that is available with a rigid roof (the same car is sold as a Lancia in Europe!). Its base four-cylinder engine can be coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission, the same one that comes with the very powerful Pentastar V-6 engine. Finally, the biggest Chrysler available remains the impressive Town & Country, one of the best selling minivans in the world. Recently improved, it now sports a completely new and better appointed interior. Only one engine is available under the hood of this front-wheel drive, the 283-horsepower Pentastar V-6 — but it does not need more!

The mid-sized Dodge Journey crossover was highly revised and eagerly received by car buyers early last year. It has been carried over into 2012, but the improvements are still worth taking a look at. In fact, the Journey is the best selling vehicle of its category in Canada! It’s no wonder, since it is available in so many models, some with front-wheel drive, others with all-wheel drive systems. The base engine remains the economical 2.4-litre, in-line fourcylinder engine. The already legendary Pentastar 3.6-litre, V-6 engine is offered as an option in some versions or as a standard choice in high value models such as the sporty R/T. The smallest engine is available with a four-speed automatic transmission, while the V-6 comes with a six-speed version. On top of a revised front grille featuring the traditional Dodge cross in the middle, the Journey sports an improved and restyled interior. THACKER

Boy killed in crash

FOUR (OR THREE)

A 14-year-old boy was killed in motorcycle accident near Cluculz Lake May 31. The Prince George Regional Provincial Traffic Services, along with Vanderhoof Traffic Services, are investigating the accident, which occurred at 5:27 p.m. The boy was riding a dirt bike, on Gill Place Road when it collided with a Ford pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old man. The driver of the truck was uninjured in the crash. Both are from the Vanderhoof area.

4

A collision reconstructionist from North District was called to the scene of the collision. Although the investigation is still in its infancy, the initial evidence suggests speed is likely a factor in this crash. The RCMP, along with the BC Coroners Office, continue to investigate this crash, and ask anyone who may have witnessed this crash, or have information that may assist the investigators, to contact the RCMP or Crimestoppers.

HIV+ do NOT know. HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

Cowboy logic beats mouse That chubby little mouse who used to visit us every night around 10:30 p.m. will scuttle no more across the living room floor. A friend of ours, Jack, put an end, once and for all, to its shenanigans. Let me fill you in a bit on

PUZZLE NO. 348 HOW TO PLAY:

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3 x 3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: you must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3 x 3 box.

Then you sit there with your chin dragging while he says, “You following me now?” When it comes to fashion, Jack is most comfortable in cowboy boots, but some days he will dress up in sandals, pairing them with his woolies. Tres chic. His standard head wear is a black cowboy hat with silver buckles. By the way, he isn’t one of those youknow-what on the inside of the boots cowboy. He’s the real deal. He’s ridden bulls, worked on a ranch and loves to hunt. Maybe the most important thing to remember about Jack is you should never dare him or challenge him, cause he’ll see your dare and raise you a box of Milwakee (preferaAnswers can be found in the classifieds. bly the one with the slinky little brunette on the can) and a shot of Sambuca. Runners celebrate with Voneugen ALISTAIR MCINNIS sports@pgfreepress.com

There’s nothing like a milestone to bring back an old tradition. Prince George running legend Dick Voneugen turns 80 this year. To mark the occasion, runners in the community will complete a multi-distance, trail fun run in Prince George. The course will cover 80 kilometres, not exactly a new concept to Voneugen, who used to run the kilometres of his age with a group of friends on his birthday. But when the Dick Voneugen Birthday Fun Run takes place on June 10, it’ll be the rebirth of an event that was held annually until 2004. The circumstances are different, since Voneugen isn’t preparing to jog, instead opting to follow the course in a mobile aid station to help runners. But supporting Voneugen and his passion for running by tying in the course distance with his age is the purpose, the reason his friends were drawn to the birthday run in the first place. Voneugen, inducted into the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 as a builder and adminstrator, began running the kilometres of his age on his birthday in his late 40s. He began alternating between Mount Robson and the Cranbrook Hill Greenway, a trail system he played a leading role in developing. But Voneugen, who will celebrate his 80th birthday on July 24, is only human. His age got the best of him in the 1990s. “When I turned 60 in ‘92, I got a little scared. I thought, this is getting out of hand, 60 K,” he said. “So from then on, we counted down in kilometres while my age went up, so we’d always still add up the distance and my years to 120.” Voneugen also began tying

A special legislative committee has been appointed to look at timber supply in the province. Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad is the convenor for the seven-member committee, and says they have a short timeline to work with. “We held our first meeting (May 17) to look at what kind of a schedule we could set up to meet our report date of Aug. 15. We’ll be holding our next meetings at the end of the month.” The committee, which also includes Liberal MLAs Donna Barnett (Cariboo-Chilcotin), Eric Foster (Vernon-Monashee) and Ben Stewart (Westside-Kelowna) and NDP MLAs Harry Bains (Surrey-Newton), Norm Macdonald (Columbia RiverRevelstoke) and Bill Routley (Cowichan Valley), is looking at starting public meetings the week of June 18 and wrapping those up by July 20.

“We plan to hold meetings everywhere from Smithers down to the Kamloops-Merritt area, as well as out in Mackenzie and McBride. The areas impacted the most by the pine beetle are where we will be focused.” The committee’s terms of reference are to consider recommendations which would increase timber supply, including direction on the potential scope of changes to land-use objectives, rate of harvest and conversion of volume-based tenures to areabased tenures. Rustad says the committee composition was determined by the house leaders, who checked with their party MLAs to see if they would be willing to sit on the committee. “I would have liked to have Bob Simpson (Independent, Cariboo North) on the committee,” Rustad said, “but the NDP didn’t want him on the committee.” Simpson was an NDP MLA before becoming an Independent in December 2010.
