The Abbotsford Police Department has partnered with Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH) and Cancer Centre to launch a new initiative for young patients requiring treatment at the facility. Project Band-Aid involves uniformed APD patrol officers visiting children in hospital and leaving them with a unique keepsake – a “stuffed animal” police dog with an APD bandana. These are not available for sale. Const. Ian MacDonald said the project was based on similar programs in place across North America. It began quietly a few months ago, but was officially launched on Wednesday. The Abbotsford Police Foundation provided funding for hundreds of the toys, which will be distributed an average of once a month in the hospital’s pediatric ward. MacDonald said the APD wants to offer encouragement to these children as they recuperate or face the challenges involved with their treatments. Susie Clark, AHR’s child life specialist, said the program fits in well with her objective of making the hospital less fearful and more fun for young patients. The driver of a pickup truck involved in a fatal collision in Abbotsford on Tuesday afternoon was making a left turn at the time. Const. Ian MacDonald said a 26-year-old Abbotsford woman driving a Ford pickup was heading south on Highway 11 and attempted to turn onto Bateman Road. A 51-year-old Coquitlam man, whose name has not been released, was driving a Dodge Caravan north on Highway 11 when he crashed into the truck. He died on the scene, and the woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Initial reports that there was a passenger in the Caravan have since proved incorrect. MacDonald said drugs or alcohol were not factors in the crash. “Speed, driver error and the cycle of the lights will be central components of the investigation,” he said.

A call to police late Wednesday afternoon triggered officers, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, a hazmat team and ambulance personnel to set up in front of a home on Pandora Avenue, not sure of what they would encounter. Hazmat crews responded to a call about a man living in a Pandora Avenue home, who had raised a friend’s concern on Wednesday. Abbotsford Police had been contacted by a person who was concerned about the behaviour of a friend, whom he said had mental health issues and “might be having a bad day.”
MacDonald said he could not reveal details about the call, but the person indicated that his friend had been making strange remarks in the last few weeks. The caller suggested
police should visit the home, located in the 32000 block of Pandora Avenue, where the man lived in the basement suite. MacDonald said police did not know what kind of
situation they might find, and they had to be prepared for any eventuality. “All we have is the information provided to us … Nobody wants to be responsible for saying, ‘This is probably nothing.’ ” The upstairs residents of the house and occupants of the adjacent homes were evacuated while the area around the residence was cordoned off and a Hazmat decontamination tent was set up in the street. During this time, police tried to reach the man by cellphone and, when they finally made contact, they confirmed that he was safe at another home. No chemicals were found in his suite, and the scene was cleared without incident.

The Abbotsford Twisters gymnastics club wants to create a new $20-million facility at Exhibition Park. The group plans to fundraise to acquire the capital needed. However, it has requested and received some help from the city. Council agreed on Monday to endorse, in principle, the new building plan and to contribute $550,000 in general reserve funding to offset the cost of development cost charges, permits and service connections. Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman said it was an easy decision to make. “So let’s see, a half million dollars on the city’s part, $20 million on their part – that’s a home run. Plus it’s

She told council the facility is outdated and
needs to be upgraded. The club has been in the same building, at Exhibition Park, for the past 25 years and utilizes it seven days a week. The new facility would be a total of 48,000 square feet. Of that, 20,000 sq.ft. would be for the gymnastic training centre, 12,000

sq.ft. for a recreational and preschool gym and the remainder would consist of multi-purpose rooms, offices, cafeteria and viewing areas. She said the Twisters have approached Agrifair and the Silverfox Air Cadet Squadron, both located in the same area, and have been given their
support. The project also includes improvements to the cadet facility as well as outdoor recreation areas. The Twisters have already sent several local athletes to the Olympics and want to continue that tradition of excellence, including expanding their programs for children with special needs. “Our ultimate, longterm goal is sending athletes to the Special Olympics,” said Barnard. She added that fitness was important for children, noting that 26 per cent of youth are overweight and only one in eight gets the recommended amount of physical activity. Now that council has given approval in principle the Twisters will begin their capital fundraising campaign.

NewsBytes Break-ins up during the summer months Although Abbotsford has seen an overall 11 per cent decline in break-and-enters over the last three years, police are concerned about an increase during the summer months. Const. Ian MacDonald said, since 2009, the number of breakins has gone up by 13.5 per cent in the months of June, July and August. He said 36 per cent of those involve homes with unlocked doors or windows, and the majority have occurred during daytime hours. Often nothing is taken, despite the fact that electronics, jewelry, cash and tools are among the most popular items stolen by thieves. “The suspect gains entry into your home and violates your sense of security, but sometimes doesn’t find what he is looking for on that day,” MacDonald said. He said the hardest hit areas are where there are the largest concentrations of people, meaning that thieves are trying doors and windows in highdensity areas where minimal effort is required to gain entry. Among the tips suggested by police are: Q use deadbolt locks and window/sliding door lock pins; Q give your home the appearance that you are there when you’re not by using timer lights, exterior motion-detecting lights and having a neighbour park a vehicle in your driveway; Q make sure your garage door is completely locked; Q keep valuables hidden – a set of car keys, portable electronics, cash and ID left close to a window can attract a thief; and Q do not advertise your absence on social media sites such as Facebook. Certificates of commendation have been presented to Steve Stewart and Steve Parks, along with Abbotsford Fire Rescue Captain Jim Durvin and firefighters Tom Dodd, Scott Ellis and Greg Herron. The awards were presented Monday night at Abbotsford city council and stem from an incident which took place on April 17. A cardiac arrest call came in from the Sevenoaks Alliance Church and when the fire crew pulled up to the scene, they found a man lying, lifeless in the parking lot. Two men (Stewart and Parks) were performing CPR. Firefighters used a defibrillator, twice, and the man suddenly came to. Colin James Lewis, a 73-year-old White Rock resident, immediately looked at the firefighters and asked what was going on. The man was taken to Abbotsford hospital and received emergency bypass surgery. On Monday, Lewis was in Abbotsford to take part in the commendation ceremony. “Miracles do happen,� said Lewis as he thanked the fire crew and the “two Steves.�

A change in school bus fees starting in the 2013-14 school year means that some parents who currently receive the service for free will have to pay, while others will see a reduction in their costs. The Abbotsford board of education voted at its meeting on Monday night to adopt a system that trustees said is more equitable for those using the service. Cur rently, any student who lives outside the walk limits – 4 km for ch i l d re n f ro m Kindergarten to Grade 5 and 4.8 km for Grades 6 to 12 – receives busing at no cost. Students who use the system but live within the walk limit pay $300 per year or $500 per family. The new system will charge $200 per
student, or $400 per family, for anyone using the service, regardless of walk limits. Students attending a “school of choice” – not one in their catchment area – currently pay $535 each or $755 per family. Those fees will drop to $350 and $700. Special needs students will continue to receive school busing at no cost. School district secretary-treasurer Ray Velestuk said the decision to change the fees was made based on input from two public consultation meetings last year in which parents expressed a desire for an approach that was more fair. Some parents said the walk limits were too far for their kids, and they were concerned that they had to pay for living within the limits while others were able to use the
service for free. Velestuk said the district expects to lose some riders because of the new approach, but should
also gain many, generating about the same amount of revenue as it currently does. Total revenue from
bus fees is estimated to be $592,500 under the new approach. Only one trustee, Preet Rai, voted against the changes.

My View I have been on quite a trip with my cousin these past few months. She is actually not really my cousin. She was adopted, which has been the focus of this journey. Thora is 59 and was adopted at birth – presumably the child of a teenage pregnancy in the ’50s when it was unheard of for young moms to keep their babies. When the red tape around adoption files was loosened a few years ago, I wasn’t sure if that was a good idea. I was visualizing a total stranger walking up to the door of his or her birth mom and saying, “Hi. I’m your daughter (or son)!” I also wondered how the adoptive parents would feel. Would they say “Now, after we’ve raised you, you don’t want us to be your parents anymore?” Happily, I discovered that the government has more common sense than I had given them credit for. By watching my
cousin start her search, I learned that while information about birth parents and adopted children is available, there is a procedure for acquiring it. Details aren’t just handed out willy-nilly. Thora lived a happy, normal life. She was adopted by a loving family that was comprised of many aunts, uncles and cousins, and while she knew she was adopted, she never gave it much thought. In her early teens, she discovered she had a lovely singing voice, was a natural on the guitar and liked to write her own music. Once in a while, she would wonder where this talent came from, but the curiosity was fleeting. When Thora reached her late 40s, she and her husband received the devastating news that she had developed Parkinson’s disease, a turn of events that really got her wondering about her biological background. However, she hesitated to start the search. She did not want to hurt her family’s feelings, but she was starting to get anxious about it. She felt like she was on an emotional roller coaster. To search or not to search? In August 2011, after both her adoptive parents had passed away, she took the
plunge. The process involved contacting Vital Statistics, receiving her birth mother’s name, then contacting the Adoption Reunion Society to request an active search. Three months later, Thora was a bundle of nerves, having heard nothing
Thora was a bundle of nerves, worrying about ‘who’ she would discover... and worrying about “who” she would discover and what the rest of the family would think. It turned out the rest of the family was 100 per cent behind her on this. In February 2012, word came. The Adoption Reunion Society reported they had located a woman who is also the daughter of Thora’s birth mother. Would she like them to contact that person to receive permission to pass on
her information? This is where I started to feel OK about the system. They don’t give “searchers” personal information about family members they have located. It all has to go through proper privacy channels. Within a week, Thora, who by this time was beside herself with excitement, had spoken with and emailed her new “sister.” She learned there is music in their family but no Parkinson’s disease; there are three other half-sisters and there was a baby brother who died in infancy. Their mom had passed away 17 years ago. The first sister contacted lives in L.A. but used to live in Vancouver’s West End along with another sister who still lives in Vancouver. One is on Vancouver Island. One is in Alberta. The four women in Canada have met, hugged, cried, laughed and amazed each other with their similarities. The sister in L.A. has shared all this over Skype, email and telephone. A meeting was planned to happen, after this column was written. Congratulations to the City of Abbotsford and the Run for Water committee organizers for creating a fantastic event. It was equally rewarding to see so many runners in our community turn out for such a worthwhile cause. As a person who has been involved with the running world for over 45 years, I appreciate the time and effort it takes to make an event of
this size successful. It makes Abbotsford stand out among the other cities in British Columbia as a leader in health, exercise, and sport. It was a true fitness celebration. To the thief or thieves that stole the metal flower vase holder from my wife’s grave. I would imagine that the metal vase holder would fetch all of about 25 cents from an unscrupulous scrap metal dealer. You must be hard up indeed to come into a cemetery and steal such a valuable item. I often have wondered just how low some people can sink and now I know. To you and your ilk, absolutely nothing is to be left untouched if you
can see a few pennies in it for yourself. I find it difficult to understand how someone could be like you. You must even despise yourself. The fact that cowardly slugs like you exist is a new revelation to me. I hope you put the 25 cents to good use. It probably contributed to the purchase of a bottle or drugs. R.A. Klassen

letters Holiday costs small business On May 29, the British Columbia Legislature debated Bill 53, enabling the creation of BC’s new Family Day holiday. While many are happily anticipating the arrival of an extra holiday next February, little has been said about the costs that will be borne by B.C.’s small business sector. Small business accounts for 98 per cent of all business in B.C., providing close to 60 per cent of all private sector jobs. Small business contributes 30 per cent of our GDP. They are the risk-takers who put their personal and financial lives on the line to create jobs. Yet only Abbotsford South MLA John Van Dongen, joined by the legislature’s two other independent members, chose to stand up for small business. Van Dongen noted that for small business, Family Day doesn’t bring a relaxing break, but major pressure. An average-sized small business paying B.C.’s average wage will face an extra $1,135 in labour costs alone. The global cost to all small and medium-sized businesses is an estimated $42 million. Add to that three minimum wage increases in the last year, and more than $3,000 in costs to transition to PST. But as yet, the BC Liberals, and the New Democrats who voted with them on this legislation, have failed to offer concrete action that will mitigate
small business cost concerns. They’re not even talking about it publicly. It’s not always easy to take a position that runs counter to the majority. It takes con-
viction to take up a battle no one else will fight. On behalf of small business owners in Abbotsford, including 210 represented by the Canadian Federation of

An Abbotsford man has made the final stage of a contest being held by Mazda Canada. Jordan Supeene, 25, is among five finalists selected from across the nation in the Defy Convention Contest to win a 2013 CX-5. Video, photo and story submissions were invited, and Supeene entered a video. He was among hundreds of entries that were narrowed down to 33 semi-finalists. The public was invited to vote online for the five finalists, and the winner will now be selected by a panels of judges by June 8. The four other finalists are all from Ontario. The pair agreed to spend one hour in a scissor lift for every $5,000 that students raised for the Heart to Heart children’s home, school and church in Haiti. Almost $45,000 was collected, resulting in an eight-hour stay above ground.
A few years ago Abbotsford was faced with the headline “Abbotsford, B.C. is Canada’s murder capital again”. But over the last three years, the Abbotsford Police Department has shed the murder capital title and recorded close to a 30 per cent drop in crime. Abbotsford’s Chief Constable Bob Rich will be speaking at a June 6 Chamber of Commerce
luncheon where he’ll shed light on how police have managed to decrease Abbotsford’s crime rate. He will also share what plans he has for policing in Abbotsford over the coming years. A police officer since 1980, Rich became chief in July of 2008 and oversees more than 200 police officers and 70 civilian members. Prior to joining the APD, he
was with the Vancouver Police Department where he served as the deputy chief constable of the operations division. This chamber luncheon will be held at the Sandman Inn in Abbotsford. Post-modern poet
The next Blue Moon Reading Series event is set for June 11. The poetry reading begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Clearbrook Library (32320 George Ferguson Way) and is being presented by the library and the Poets Potpourri Society of Abbotsford. The reading begins with an open mic. This month’s special guest is Emily Isaacson, a 36-year-old Canadian poet who has written more than 1,200 poems. At the reading she is launching her third book, The Sunken Garden. Isaacson has written
a daily blog of poetry for more than six months, and her Poem of the Day is now a published book for her readers to enjoy. Her post-modern poetry is colourful, lyrical and even magical in its break from realism. The topics of her poems are varied, but a common theme is her comparison of nature to human nature, and a discourse back and forth between the
naturalist and the philosopher. Her use of classic forms such as rhyme schemes, syllabic poems and English sonnets prevail over free verse. Isaacson served on the board of the Mission Arts Council for three years, and has a vested interest in artists. She graduated from Bastyr University in 1999, and is the founder and director
of the Emily Isaacson Institute, and has worked to create a nutrition program for the First Nations People as well as opening the Health and Wellness Clinic for quality nutrition care in Abbotsford. Directed by James Servizi, the play deals with the experiences of a young Dutch girl, during the German occupation during the Second World War. The story is told by Hennie DrentenRegoczi, a Chilliwack resident in her 70s. The play shows how a Dutch farm family near the German border sheltered resistance fighters, evacuees and a Jewish man in their attic, at a great risk to their own lives. This poignant, compassionate and often humorous tale is suitable for audiences of all ages. Droning of Bombers is written and performed by DrentenRegoczi. She plays multiple roles during her performance, including a small child, a distraught mother, a stalwart father and a Gestapo officer. This project began in 2009 when Servizi suggested that Hennie write down the memories of her wartime experiences. Droning of Bombers plays tonight, June 2 and June 7-9 at 7.30 p.m., with two Sunday matinees June on 3 and 10 at 2 p.m. Proceeds will go towards providing scholarships for UFV theatre students. Twisters clean up at nationals Three medals for Ikeda, all-around title for Clay Veteran Ken Ikeda and youngster Zachary Clay led the charge for Abbotsford’s Twisters Gymnastics Club at the national championships in Regina last weekend. Ikeda is a two-time Olympian – he competed in Athens in 2004 and was an alternate in Beijing in ’08 – and he won a trio of medals in the senior men’s division. He took the gold in his best event, the pommel horse, and added a silver on parallel bars and bronze on the high bar. Clay claimed his second
national all-around championship, adding a junior men’s crown to his 2010 title in the tyro division. He won individual gold on the pommels and the vault, and added a bronze on the rings. Other local highlights included a gold medal on the high bar from Nicolas Garfias in the high performance tyro division; an all-around silver by Steven Chaplin in the national youth category; and top-eight finishes from Dawson Friesen (fourth on vault), Marquita Morison
(sixth on beam) and Cohen Kiers (eighth on parallel bars). Additionally, nine Twisters gymnasts from the women’s competitive team were at the Garden City Invitational in Victoria. Medalists from Abbotsford included Lizaan Steenkamp (provincial level 2 tyro, silver on vault, tie for bronze on floor), Lauren Almos (provincial level 2 tyro, bronze on beam) and Ashley Perry (provincial level 4 novice, silver on vault, beam, floor and all-around).

Rowell scored one try apiece, and Rowell added two converts. “It was a lot better, and the boys feel better about it, too,” T-Wolves coach Dave Chambers said, contrasting the performance against Argyle to the Handsworth loss. “The boys were really disappointed. But
they trained hard, and set the goal of coming back and doing the best they can on this side (of the draw).” The other Abbotsford team in the AAA field didn’t fare as well. The No. 8-seeded Yale Lions, also relegated to the consolation side, lost 28-5 to No. 16 West Vancouver in their
second game. Thomas Choi had the lone try for the Lions, who fell behind 21-0 early and couldn’t recover. Yale coach Doug Primrose felt his team underestimated the Highlanders. “I think they kind of went in thinking, ‘We’re playing No. 16, so it should be an easy game,’” he said. “But that team is way better than 16. “We played probably our worst game of the season and they played their best, so it wasn’t a good combo.” Bateman played G.P. Cheer team wins Heat host open house big in California Sports
Abbotsford's ACE Allstars cheerleading team won the grand champion award at a recent competition in Anaheim, Calif. The local club's senior team led the way at the Sharp International meet, winning gold in their division. Additionally, ACE's five-member team in the mini division (age 3-7) took second place, and the club also had a series of strong finishes in the stunt group and individual skill events. Add it all up, and the Abbotsford club earned first place overall in the all-star division, which is for non-school teams. Head coach Angela
LaPlante was particularly pleased with the performance of the senior team, which featured 13 athletes ranging in age from 10 to 18. "We came together in January and had to fundraise and train like crazy," she said. "We had quite a mix of abilities as well as ages, and as a choreographer, I started with only one trained flyer – the person who goes in the air and does all the tricks – and I needed at least three. So two kids with no previous experience in that part of our sport stepped up and learned how to fly, and they did well enough that we won. "It was really exciting."
Q The Abbotsford Heat are hosting an open house on Saturday at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will feature appearances by Heat players Quintin Laing, Leland Irving and Danny Taylor, along with team president Ryan Walter and mascot Hawkey. There will also be locker room tours, a merchandise sale, kids activities on the arena floor, and a barbecue by donation with proceeds going to the Heat Foundation. Q Source for Sports is partnering with the NHL Players Association on the Goals and Dreams Game-Changer Award program. The Goals and Dreams

program helps economically disadvantaged children play the sport of hockey, and the Game-Changer Award assists individual families. As the equipment supplier, Source for Sports will fit and supply the hockey gear. “No one should be left out of hockey because they can’t afford it,” said Randy Bishop, owner of Mad Dog’s Source for Sports in Abbotsford. “We are very excited to partner with the NHLPA and help give back to people in our community and help all kids enjoy the game.”

The successful candidate will report directly to the Mine Manager at the Cox Quarry site in Abbotsford. Primary responsibilities include technical support to all staff regarding the mining plan, capital works projects and maintenance upgrades. In addition, you will be responsible for managing permitting and compliance issues as well as co-ordinating the work of consultants, surveyors and others engaged to assist with the administration of a large hard rock quarry. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated an ability to work sell with others and have shown a practical approach to problem solving in the mining, construction aggregates or a related field for a minimum of ten years. Although not essential, a Professional Engineering or AScT designation is preferred but good interpersonal and presentation skills and proficiency in both written and verbal communication are essential. Mainland Sand & Gravel offers a salary commensurate with experience, a company vehicle or vehicle allowance and a full benefits package including medical, dental and pension. GOERZEN Rudy 1921 ~ 2012 On Tuesday, May 29th, 2012 Rudy Goerzen, age 90, of Abbotsford, went to be with his Lord and Saviour. He leaves to mourn his passing his dear wife Katherine (Kay) of 65 years; one son Ric (Helen); two daughters Carolyn (Bruno) Braun and Rosalea (Don) Minosky; seven grandchildren: Brian Goerzen, Jodi Goerzen, Chad Braun, Cameron Braun, Joel Braun, Jesse Minosky and Luke Minosky; as well as one sister Agatha (Abe) Plett; two brothers Art (Deloris) and Ed (Helen Ann) and their families. Viewing will be held Sunday, June 3rd between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. and also prior to the service, at Bethel Mennonite Church, 24687-56 Avenue, Langley. The funeral service will be held Monday, June 4th at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Mennonite Church with Pastor Phil Wheaton officiating. A heartfelt thank you is extended to all the care staff in Worthington Pavilion and Menno Hospital for the compassionate and loving care that they provided for Rudy. Kay was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan to Herbert and Mae Tubbs. Kay had a brother Jim and a sister Vesta. She was married in 1935 to Leonard Kidder and they had 2 children, Robert and Ada Mae. In the early 50’s the family moved to the Fraser Valley in BC and Kay continued to work as a cook. She was later employed by Correction Services at Matsqui Institution as a guard. Kay volunteered with Abbotsford Community Services. She always loved to cook and in her retirement she provided cakes each week to her bridge club at the Friendship House in Abbotsford. After her daughter Ada Mae passed away from breast cancer in 1995 she moved to Chilliwack to be near her two granddaughters Bonnie Sibley and Michelle Rickaby. She lived in the Lynwood Retirement Home then went to live in Eden Care Home. Kay will be missed by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, cousins and her friends. A special thanks to all the caregivers and staff of Eden Intermediate Care Home in Chilliwack where she lived for 7 years. At Kay’s request donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
