LURED TO THE WEST By Bob Hall

ured to the West like so many others, Anne Pigeon’s journey through the ski industry has been as much of an adventure as the skiing itself. Pigeon was raised in Montreal where her parents helped her develop a love for skiing at a young age. “Skiing was always a part of what I did and I’ve always loved it,” she said, recalling times when she would march up snow covered golf courses with her mother to cross-country ski. After attending McGill University for business, Pigeon said she felt “the pull”
to pack her belongings and go West. “I often asked myself what drew me here… As far back as I can remember I had this draw to the place, there was just some mystique about living here,” she said. Pigeon quickly found herself in Banff where she realized she had an interest in working in the ski industry. “When I got here there was no problem transitioning. You start skiing the soft snow and powder and like everybody else you just get addicted to it.” It was there that she was presented with an opportunity that changed her direction. “I was going to university to study busi-
ness and I was offered a job working at Sunshine Village on the summer rail crew painting lift towers.” “I immediately jumped on that and I traded my high heels in for hiking boots. That was the start of my career in the ski industry.” For the next four years, Pigeon spent time working at Sunshine, Lake Louise and Norquay. She was then contracted to go north and work on building Powder King Mountain Resort. “I was just going with the flow,” says Pigeon. “It sounded like such a good idea. I loved the mountains, I certainly loved to ski and there was just something super sexy about it.” Pigeon quickly went from painting lift

WEST KOOTENAY WOMEN IN BUSINESS By Craig Lindsay/Castlegar News
A
lthough it’s been around for just under a year, the West Kootenay Women in Business group has already become a strong force in the area. The group came about in early 2011 after five Castlegar women, Rebecca Vassilakakis, Nancy Trotman, Jenna Semenoff, Willow Enewold, and Pam McLeod, got together and thought it would be great to be able to meet regularly with other local businesswomen. The group has been going strong since it’s conception and currently meets once a month for lunch in Castlegar with a different speaker for each meeting. “We started with a few of us and the idea’s just built up that we should move forward with this group and have it focus more on networking and meeting other people in the community,” said Vassilakakis, who works as a financial advisor for Krueckl Financial Services in Castlegar. “From there, we decided that we should have a focus for each lunch - kind of a lunch and learn. So each lunch, hopefully, we’re all coming back with something different.”
All five original members are still with the group and act as board members. They don’t have set titles, says Vassilakakis, but each one has different roles that fit their
strengths. “Jenna’s specialty is social media,” she said, “so she does all of our blogs and Facebook and logos and things like that. I help with tracking attendance and getting out newsletters. Willow and Nancy have been really hands-on at the events. They’ve been organizing and meeting and greeting the actual members that come. Pam has been our advocate for business with the Chamber of Commerce.” All the board members are volunteers, as are the speakers. Some of the recent speakers have included Phil Kolbuc of Kolbuc and Associates, who talked about time and stress management; Deanne Monroe of Columbia Basin Trust, who talked about small business funding; and Deb Burnett of Pathway Life Coaching, who spoke about goal setting. West Kootenay Women in Business has more than 150 members who hail from all over the region. “We have members from Rossland, Trail, Grand Forks, Nelson, and Castlegar,” said
Vassilakakis. “We normally have between 40 and 45 members at each luncheon.” All the meetings so far have been in Castlegar, but Vassilakakis says they are going to start having meetings in Nelson starting in September. “We’re going to be in Nelson and Castlegar once a month in both,” she said. “We’ve had lots of people from Nelson say we should be up there, so we thought it’d be a great idea to do another event up there.” “We’re going to keep it one group; not the Nelson chapter or Castlegar chapter. It’ll still be the West Kootenay Women in Business,” said Trotman, who is a broker for Centum Mortgage. “We think there will be some women that just come to Nelson and some women that will come to both. There are several businesses that are in several communities. If there’s two dates, maybe it’s easier to attend for more people.” The group is completely independent and does not currently charge a membership fee. “We support the Chamber (of Commerce) definitely and we want their support, but we don’t want people thinking they have to be a member to belong to our group,” said Trotman. “We have some women who aren’t business owners and continued on page 11

their goals are to be business owners, or they’re managers. We wanted to be more inclusive.” West Kootenay Women in Business offers women from all walks of life an opportunity to create business relationships and share ideas and experiences. “The feedback has been awesome,” said Vassilakakis. “We just keep growing. We’re fortunate that we’ve been able to expand even with no advertising budget. It’s all been through media exposure or through word of mouth. The women are cross-promoting. The networking and meeting each other, hopefully, results in more clients or if you need something, you’re going to support someone in the group.” Vassilakakis had been part of similar groups when she lived in the Okanagan and was glad to be able to help start something in the West Kootenay area that she now calls home. “I’d been a part of a group in Westbank and then Penticton
before I moved here,” she said. “I was self-employed there. It was something I really enjoyed going to and I thought, ‘hey, we need something like this,’ “ The group is looking at further expansion by adding an after-hours mingler coming up in June. “We want to do some special events to try to draw more people,” said Vassilakakis. “Lunch doesn’t always work for everyone. We’re going to do something not just for women.” The group held a Christmas mingler this year that was open to all business people. “We had husbands out and co-workers,” she said. “We also had some great donations for a raffle for a scholarship fund that we’re putting together.”
“ We started with a few of us.”

5 East Kootenay Day Trips Rebecca Edwards
T
he Elk Valley is world-renowned for its powder skiing and winter vacations – but don’t miss out on these great staycation day trips in the late spring and summer.
1. Hitch a mountain ride
There’s nothing like the view from a mountain peak. Don’t worry if you’re not a big climber – once the snow has melted, the internationallyrenowned Fernie Alpine Resort reopens the chairlifts for summer access. After the 20-minute ride on the Timber Express Chairlift, take a short hike to the mountain summit at Polar Peak, try your hand at mountain biking, or just enjoy a cold beer at the Lost Boys Café (elevation 5662 feet), which has views across the Elk Valley. • Fernie Alpine Resort is 10km west of Fernie off Highway 3. Lift access 9am-4pm, ThursdaySunday and public holidays, June to September. www.skifernie.com
2. Go backcountry – in style
Island Lake Lodge near Fernie is a luxury backcountry lodge that has been twice named by National Geographic as one of the most unique hotels in Canada. In winter it is only accessible by snowcat to a few lucky catskiers, but in summer this picturesque lodge, set in 7,000 acres of untouched land, opens to day visitors and overnight guests. Anglers can fish for trout in Island Lake, while
food sample f d lovers l l French-inspired h d Rocky k Mountain cuisine in the gourmet restaurant. Explore the giant old growth cedar forest and unique local geology with a hike of the Cedar Valley or, if that all sounds like hard work, relax with a treatment in the lodge spa. • Island Lake Lodge opens every day from June to September. Take Highway 3 3km west of Fernie, turn right at the Island Lake Lodge sign and follow the road through the old growth cedar forest for 20 minutes. www.islandlakecatskiing.com 1-888-422-8754)
3. Taste the local ale
Develop a taste for the Elk Valley with a trip around Fernie Brewery. The family-run brewery has now crafted eight Fernie beers covering every taste, from the 2011 golden blonde wheat and hop ale called Buck Wild, to the classic First Trax brown ale, or the Rocky Mountain Genuine Lager. Tour guide ‘Pat’ will give you a full tour of the brewery and tastings of all the brewery’s products. • Fernie Brewery is on Manitou Road – 1km east of Fernie on the Highway 3. Tours are Fridays at 3pm so call ahead to reserve a spot or book a private group tour. www.ferniebrewing.com 250-423-7797
4. Hit the beach
We may be a long way from the ocean, but on a hot summer’s day, you can cool off at one of the natural lake beaches.
Family-friendly l f dl Kikomun Provincial Park near Baynes Lake is home to one of British Columbia’s largest populations of http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Western_painted_turtle western painted turtles, which are named for their distinctive red and yellow markings on their undersides. These turtles are often seen sunbathing on logs on Hidden Lake and Surveyors’ Lake. Nearby Lake Koocanusa is a 100km long reservoir stretching across the US-Canada border and offers houseboats, wakeboarding and a marina. • Follow signs to Kikomun Provincial Park off Highway 3 and 93 at Elko. www.bcparks.ca • Visit www.koocanusaresort.com for information on Lake Koocanusa facilities.
5. Kootenay Trout Hatchery
The Kootenay Trout Hatchery rears approximately 2 million trout, kokanee salmon, char and white sturgeon annually and also provides research facilities for fisheries biologists. The visitor centre has family-friendly displays showing the hatching process from egg to fish, and the chance to get up close to trophy-sized trout, prehistoric white sturgeon and rare Western Painted Turtles. Kids can take their first fishing lessons in the fishing pond – but remember to use single, barbless hooks and to release any fish you may catch. • Kootenay Trout Hatchery is open for tours every day, 32 kilometres southeast of Cranbrook on Highway 3 and 6 km north on Wardner/Fort Steele Road. www.gofishbc.ca (250) 429-3214

ILLNESS FUELS INSPIRATION & DETERMINATION By Lorne Eckersley
I
f it is true that people are more than the sum of their parts, it must also be true that Creston’s Lori Wikdahl is a giant. A grandmother, Wikdahl has become a driving force in Creston Valley’s art scene, despite the fact that she only started painting in 2009. “Other than drawing stick people for my kids I didn’t have an artistic bone in my
body,” she says. Then, in an unexpected twist, she attributes her drive and newfound creativity to illness. “It’ funny, but I really do owe it all to Multiple Sclerosis,” she smiles. “I mean I hate having MS but.” Her thoughts drift back to 2002 when she was first attacked by the disease. She became bedridden and her life as a healthy, professional woman came to a screeching halt. The ambition and materialism that had once fueled Wikdahl had to be reassessed. “Life is not a paycheque. Life is not a job. Life is living,” she says. “I owe that knowledge to MS. And I have learned that you can take the disability out of the disease.” One of her first decisions in her new life was to remain as active as humanly possible. She set a goal—walk the distance of the earth’s circumference, 40,000km in ten years. In 2003 she took one giant step, or hundreds of thousands of small steps, depending on one’s point of view, toward that goal. “In 287 days, I walked across Canada from Confederation Bridge to English Bay,” she says. “I’m the only woman to do that. I walked through the Rockies in the winter, averaging 22 kilometres a day.” Health setbacks made it impossible for her to accomplish her original goal in ten years. She was about 2,000km short when the calendar indicated that a decade had passed. “I’ll do it this year, though,” she says, in a tone that leaves no room for doubt. Wikdahl’s first foray into the art world came when she was inspired to paint contemporary native designs on rocks. “I have always loved native designs and I
Page 14 KOOTENAY WOMAN Summer 2012
felt fulfilled with what I was doing,” she says. “But then two years ago my son turned 30 and he wanted me to make him a painting. But he said he wanted something different, with lots of colours. “So I did him an Aztec calendar. And I was so enamored with it that I started thinking, ‘What else can I do?’” With no artistic background at all, Wikdahl hadn’t painted herself into a corner and she dove into style after “In 287 days, I style, embracwalked across ing some and abandoning Canada from ot h e rs , but Confederation always learning lots on her Bridge to English journey. Bay,” she says. “I’ve done abstract styles “I’m the only and Impressionist styles woman to do that. a n d May a n I walked through s t y l e s ,” s h e says. “I have the Rockies in the taught myself winter, averaging Chinese water 22 kilometres a colour painting and now day.” I am doing Japanese ink painting—with each new style I take on I learn as much about life as about art.” Wikdahl studied history in university, even doing a summer stint at Oxford University in England. “My fascination with history makes me want to learn about everything around the style of art that I am working on at the time,” she says. So she haunts the public library and the Internet, delving as deeply as she can into each topic.

This past winter has been a tough one, she admits. One of the side effects to her MS is depression. “It can be hard because the MS and depression drain the energy away from me, and you need energy to be creative.” Her 11-year-old autistic grandson lives with her and there are times, especially when the days are short and dreary, when him and her dogs take up all of her energy. But even some of the side effects of MS have a positive aspect. “In the last few months my hands have been shaking really badly,” she says. But her friend, artist Val van der Poel, gave her some ink pens. “It’s amazing what you can do with a pen and shaky hands,” Wikdahl smiles. “That’s why I’ve
moved into oriental styles.” “I’m hungry when it comes to art—I want to know all I can,” she says. “I just want to know ‘how you do that?’ and I learn from other artists or from books.” While her preferred “canvas” is a rock, she can’t just pick up a rock and start painting. “If I try to just put an image on a stone it never works,” she says. “But if I see something on the stone, I can work to bring it out in an image. It’s like the stones talk to me.”

magine as you read this today, 64 woman are telling their families that they have breast cancer. Imagine that today, 14 families are saying good-bye to their sister, aunt, wife, grandmother or mom as they lose that battle. The statistics are grave, and daunting. Such darkness can become the nest from which brilliance is born. This is where we meet a woman who chooses to stand outside the ordinary self, and she has inspired others to do so as well. Safire Jones has been a resident of the West Kootenay for 20 years. Jones’ mother, Lyn, 63, died from breast cancer in Christ Church, New Zealand, last July. Turning grief and frustration into a catalyst, Jones has convinced 15 women to bare their breasts to be cast in plaster form. The women range from 17 to 71 years of age. One is eight months pregnant, another is a cancer survivor with the tell-tale mastectomy scar. The busts were handed over to 15 artists and the project has evolved into a colourful, touching and thought provoking show that Jones christened “Busted! When was the last time you checked yours?”
“This show (and auction) is to remind people to take the matters of breast health into their own hands,” said Jones. “I firmly believe that with early detection I may have had my mom around for longer.” By the time Jones’ mother was diagnosed her cancer was already large and aggressive. “I believe it is important that people become familiar with the shape and feel of their breasts,” she added, “knowing their usual lumps and bumps, so they can be prepared for a change if it happens.” Being breast aware means knowing how your breasts normally look and feel. Your breasts change naturally throughout your life. However, it is important to see your doctor or health care provider if you notice any significant or unusual changes. When detected early, there is a better chance of successfully treating breast cancer. “You need to know your breasts,” said Jones. Although somewhat uncertain in the beginning of the project, Jones’ resolve was cemented when other people began approaching her with their own stories of breast cancer, with their own words of support. Jones received an email message from an artist who had done a plaster cast of her own bust years ago after being diagnosed with breast cancer. www.kootenaywoman.com
After she read an article about the “Busted” show she was inspired to begin working upon that bust, and perhaps create one of herself after her mastectomy. Jones was moved to tears to learn this woman was the same age as her mother Lynn. Each bust is available to purchase through an ongoing auction from now until September. All funds raised will go towards Willow.org, and towards artwork for the oncology ward at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson. Willow is a support organization for persons living with and surviving a cancer diagnosis. It provides a library of information, links to support groups and professionals. All busts can be viewed and bid upon online at http://safirejones.com/safirejones. com/BUSTED_AUCTION.html Dates and locations for the summer tour will also be available. The slate of artists includes Avrell Fox, Cassia Barrett, Della Schafer, Marin Patenaude, Christina Smith, Cindy Moser, Bubzy, Allanah Cronshaw, Rabi`a, Tanya Pixie Johnson, Natasha Smith, Samuel Stevenson and Jones herself.
“I believe it is important that people become familiar with the shape and feel of their breasts,” she added, “knowing their usual lumps and bumps, so they can be prepared for a change

Instruments are moved around so the drum set is set up on a raised platform; in the corner of the studio, a bass is tuned. Grand Forks singer Amanda Thate has recently released her third album I Have My Place. “There are some cover songs and some originals on the new CD,” she said. “The new CD covers a lot of songs that people request every time I perform which is awesome!” Along with her first two albums, Our Love and I’ll Meet You, her latest album features cover songs from popular bands and original songs written by herself and her mother, Monica Thate. Monica has written all of her original songs, such as the title songs ‘I’ll meet you’ and ‘Our Love’. Thate recently competed against several Canadian singers and bands to open on the big stage for the 2012 Merritt Mountain Music Festival
on July 19. She was running against the Tequila Cowboys, Steve Rivers, Coal Creek Boys and Alee! Thate received the most votes out of five contestants during a fan’s choice online voting contest via Facebook. However, due to limited advanced ticket sales, the show has been cancelled. “I feel so grateful and excited,” exclaimed Thate. “We think there were close to 1,000 people who voted for me and I’m not sure where they all came from.” It was not too long ago when Thate, at 13, attended the Merritt Mountain Music Festival to watch her hero, Reba McEntire. “It was pretty much because I wanted to see Reba McEntire. I was just star-struck and amazed by it,” said Thate. Thate and her sister Brook drew up two big cards and letters with pictures, and stood backstage with their father all day trying to meet up with the country superstar. “The security guards got to know us pretty well,” laughed Thate. “This one security told us we couldn’t meet up with her in person but he said he’d give her the cards in per-

Increase Results with Pre and Post Workout Meals!
W
e all know how important it is to make healthy food choices, but did you know that what and when you eat plays a huge role in seeing results? Aim at eating five to six meals a day to keep your metabolism revving all day long. If you exercise regularly, pay attention to your pre and post-workout meals; knowing not only what to eat, but when to eat it can actually make your workouts more effective by helping you add more muscle mass to your frame, which will speed up your metabolism and help you reach your goals. Here are some general guidelines to follow. If you enjoy early morning workouts, don’t make the mistake of exercising on an empty stomach. Working out without fueling up can cause your body to breakdown muscle tissue to provide energy. In other words, you’ll be using the energy stored in your muscle, thereby creating muscle loss. Eating something prior to working out will provide your body with the essential nutrients needed for energy. Food fills the glycogen stores, found in muscles and the liver, which are the primary sources of energy during exercise. The amount you should consume depends on how soon you are going to be working out. If it’s first thing in the morning and you plan to workout within the next 30 minutes, opt for a smaller snack rather than a big breakfast; such as a protein shake with 1/2 cup of frozen fruit that you can easily digest. If your workout includes high intensity intervals, such as skipping or spinning, give your body 45 minutes to digest your pre-workout meal. If you have 3 or more hours before your workout, opt for a larger meal that contains complex carbohydrates, such as veggies or whole grains. Avoid food high in fats as they are slower to digest and can leave you feeling sluggish. When it comes to post-exercise, eating the proper nutrients within 30 to 60 minutes after a workout to refuel your body can maximize your efforts in the gym. When you workout, your body does two things; it depletes glycogen or the carbohydrates stored in your body as energy and breaks down the protein or tissues in your muscles
Page 20 KOOTENAY WOMAN Summer 2012
through a process c a l le d c a tabolism (micro te ars in the muscle). Since our energy stores are depleted after exercise, eating the proper nutrients soon after a workout will help replenish this glycogen and enhance protein building through a process called anabolism. After resistance training, focus on eating a protein-rich meal to build and repair the “damaged” tissues. After a workout that combines weights and cardio, have a meal that combines lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats to replenish glycogen stores and rebuild muscles. A great post-workout snack could be as simple as tuna on a slice of whole grain toast with ¼ avocado. After a cardiovascular workout, focus on replenishing fluids and glycogen reserves. Try a glass of 1 per cent chocolate milk for something quick. Regardless of the type of exercise you do, pre- and post-exercise nutrition is a must if you want to see better results. When you combine the right foods with adequate rest and recovery, you will be far more likely to reach your goals. Still hungry for more? Working with a certified personal trainer that can offer you valuable nutritional information can help you reach your fitness objectives. If you’re in the Columbia Valley, book a free fitness assessment and consult with Kate Atkinson 250-688-0221 or Hayley Wilson 250-688-0024 and start your journey to a healthier you! www.kootenaywoman.com

ERNA JENSEN-SHILL N-SHILL OFF TO MARKET KET
E
rna Jensen-Shill is a Kimberley resident who is known for her work in environmental agencies and more recently for her position as manager of the Cranbrook Farmer’s Market. This market is a place where local vendors of food, crafts, art and other items can sell their wares to their neighbours and friends. It’s a good idea, but one that requires careful attention to run smoothly. “One of the challenges that I run into is explaining our guidelines,” said Jensen-Shill. “We appreciate any interest, but this can’t be a clear-
ing house for products made in China. That’s just not what it is about.” And one look at the market’s guidelines tell potential vendors (and buyers) what the ab market is about. “ “First and foremost, p products must be locally m made, baked, raised or gr grown,” state the guideline These rules go furlines. ther making it known that ther, the market m is looking for items from within 100 kilometres of Cranbrook and that preferenc preference will be given to vendors that aare the actual producers. IIn other th words, the market wants people knowledgeable in the product to be on hand to talk with buyers. And under Jensen-Shills tenure as manager, the market has grown over the years from a few vendors to 50 last year, with many more wanting in on the phenomenon. “It’s a testing ground for new business and farmers. It’s also a meeting place--business people and folks on a farm-gate level. It’s a very interesting place to be,” said Jensen-Shill. “The best part of it is that you have a small grower or producer selling a product. You can ask them how its made or grown and you end up having a connected experience.” She added that a large component of the

market is that it brings people together. “My own theory is that as people become more and more disconnected from each other, human contact is even more valuable,” she explained. “I heard this great quote and it goes something like this, ‘If the saying is true that you are what you eat, then most people don’t know what they are.” Jensen-Shill’s other job is with Wildsight as the Kimberley/Cranbrook Clean Air and Climate Solutions Program Manager. Her position with the environmental group dovetails nicely with job as the market manager. This is not an accident. “I’ve chosen employment that aligns with my principals,” said Jensen-Shill. “I guess I’ve been lucky.” The 2012 Market Season has also been set, with 16 Saturday markets to be held from June 23rd until October 6th. The Saturday markets for the summer season (June 23rd until September 1st) will run from 9 am until 1 pm. And Saturday markets for the Fall Season (September 8th until October 6th) will run from 10 am until 1 pm. The market will also host 4 Wednesday evening markets during the summer months, on July 11th, 25th, and August 8th and 22nd, in Rotary Park, from 5 pm until 8:30 pm.
