Tattoos over 60 Seniors are proving tattoos aren’t just trendy for young people CHARMEAD SCHELLA SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Linda Cole’s son, Randy Fox, was 17 when she noticed his tattoo for the first time as he was hurrying from his bedroom to the bathroom for a shower. Linda was mortified to the core upon the realization that her son had stained his skin forever with ink. “It was every mother’s fear coming true—I gave him considerable grief,” Linda says. “I told him that motorcycles, firearms, and tattoos all go hand-in-hand; only bikers get tattooed. I was absolutely horrified.” Now, at 65 years old, Linda’s opinions about body art are changing. Her views are taking such a turn she now sports two tattoos of her own, and is in the planning stages of a third. Linda attributes her change in perspective partially to the evolving socially acceptable nature of body art. “I could see people’s ideas about tattoos changing,” Linda explains. “My husband’s best friend got a tattoo for his 65th birthday and he had always been opposed to them, too. “That really surprised me and made me stop and think.” Linda says that her age, acquired

wisdom, and confidence all play a role in her current attitude toward body art. She was married and out of her parent’s house by 17 years old, so responsibilities were bestowed upon her early in life. “Other people’s opinions of me mattered a lot more then than they do now,” she says. “I don’t have to justify myself to anyone anymore.” Over a decade ago, Linda’s son,

Randy, met and married Shelley, one of the Island’s foremost tattoo artists and owner of Port Alberni’s Five-Star Tattoo. Shelley designed and applied both of Linda’s tattoos, the first one on Mother’s Day six years ago. The influx of seniors getting inked is not specific to only Linda. A fair percentage of Five-Star’s present clientele is over 55 years old. CONTINUED / 4

Ink stays meaningful FROM / 3 “It’s actually a bit shocking to see how many older people are getting tattoos,” says Randy, who helps in the day-to-day operation of Shelley’s studio. “People book appointments saying that they have been thinking about getting a tattoo for the last 20 years, but always thought that it was the badass thing to do.” Shelley better understands the shift. “It’s because they are now allowed to.” Linda agrees with her daughter-in-law. “I wasn’t a flower child in the ’60s,” she says. “But, I am a flower child now that I am in my 60s—I have less responsibility to other people and don’t need to justify myself —I am an

adult.” Linda said that she could not have imagined being tattooed by anyone other than Shelley, with whom she shares a close relationship. Shelley has also tattooed her own parents. Linda’s first tattoo, the Mother’s Day butterfly and small flowers, was a family outing for the Coles. Linda’s sister, 54 years old at the time, and her niece, then in her 50s, all got inked at Five-Star Tattoo that day, too. Linda says that the imprint reminds her of her sister and niece, as well as her daughter-in-law—a permanent keepsake of their togetherness and love. ‘Tattoos change in style over time, just like fashion,” Shelley says. “But what remains constant is the meaning for the one wearing it.”

“I wasn’t a flower child in the ’60s. But I am a flower child now that I’m in my 60s.”

New Horizons helps seniors

SUSAN QUINN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Celebrating seniors Port Alberni mayor John Douglas, centre, joins member of the Sunshine Club in announcing Seniors Week in the city. “Seniors are a very important part of our community,” says Douglas. “We want to build the infrastructure so we can have a growing and vital seniors’ component in the community.”

OTTAWA—The Government of Canada is seeking applications for projects to help seniors lead and participate in social activities and contribute to their communities. This call for proposals under the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) was launched in early May by the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors). “Through initiatives such as the NHSP, we help seniors stay active and encourage them to continue to participate in the social and economic life of Canada,” Finley said. NHSP funding enables seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences with others and helps communities increase their capacity to address local issues. Eligible recipients can receive up to $25,000 per year.

Hammerin’ Hank going strong CHARMEAD SCHELLA SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Seventy years after he first picked up a guitar, Hank Mallon, 83, is still hammering away at it. He proudly leads a pack of gifted, skilled musicians that all bear his name. Hank first discovered country music as a boy growing up in Hilversom, Holland, during the Second World War. He listened to a homemade crystal radio that he snuck under his bedcovers to navigate in the protection of night. He was instantly mesmerized. “I heard Cool Clear Waters by Sons of the Pioneers and that was it,” he says. “I fell in love with country.” Hank is best known for his dexterous guitar handling, but the first instrument he played was actually a harmonica. “I had the measles and was confined to my crib,” CHARMEAD SCHELLA/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Hank remembers. “My cousin stood in the doorway Hank Mallon is a plucky musician still plying his passion decades after he of my bedroom not wanting to come any closer, and first picked up a guitar. threw a mouth organ into the crib. I picked it up and started playing.” After the war, Hank moved to Canada with his family. (although he has converted it to fit an amplifier). Although He was 19 years old. Seniors Connections June 2012 FROM / 6 Together with his two brothers, Tony and Bill, Hank landed a job with MacMillan Bloedel’s Great Central Lake Camp Saw Mill. The brothers all shared a love of music and began performing at work in their downtime. The Mallon Trio quickly became a favourite at the camp’s Saturday night socials, performing three-part vocal harmonies, with Hank on guitar. “Even then, in the beginning,” Hank says, “I would go into a different world when I would play.” Once the new mills were built in Port Alberni, the Mallon Trio moved into town, started new jobs and families, and eventually disbanded. Mallon family gatherings continued on with the delightful, harmonious music, though. Hank soon married his wife, Lorna (Nelson), bringing her into the raucous fold. Fifty-nine years into their marriage, Hank calls his partnership with Lorna a team. At his local gigs playing Westhaven, Fir Park and Abbeyfield seniors’ facilities and beyond, Lorna accompanies every outing without fail. “Lorna always helps me set up and take down,” Hank says. “One of the venues bills me as Hank and The Boss

on their events calendar.” Hank and Lorna have three children of their own: John, Mike, and Jane. All three possess the magical Mallon musical gift, but only Mike has gone on to wield it like an axe. Mike has been playing with the Malloomba Boogie Band for the past 22 years, and, more recently, with Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners. Hank’s grandson Carson—Mike’s son

—is a member of the Recliners, too. Hank not only plays guitars, he also makes them. Presently, he is building guitars for both of his sons and for grandson, Carson. On March 3, Hank, Mike, and Carson played together at a concert hosted by Char’s Landing in Uptown. Three generations of Mallon rocked Port Alberni for a standing-room only show. “I’m a very lucky man.”
