Fighter pilot drops in on cadets I
FORMER NANAIMO air cadet now flies Canada’s CF-18 jet. THE NEWS BULLETIN
T
he roar of CF-18 jet engines pulsed through the air above the Nanaimo Airport Saturday. For Nanaimo air cadet William Groundwater, who watched from the ground and later got a rundown of the aircraft from the pilot, it was an exciting experience. “It was outstanding. It was breathtaking,” Groundwater said. “Fighter jets just really intrigue me … so pretty much everything is like going to a rock concert for me, it’s pretty amazing.” The jet was brought in under the careful guidance of Maj. Aaron Macluskie, a graduate of the Nanaimo Air Cadet Squadron, who currently serves as the weapons and training officer for the 410 Tactical Fighter Squadron. Macluskie, who was undergoing regular scheduled training on Vancouver Island, received permission to divert to Nanaimo Airport and give the cadets a first-hand look at the fighter to celebrate the Nanaimo air cadets’ 70th anniversary. “It’s a tremendous honour and it is extremely exciting for me,” said Macluskie, about the opportunity to bring the plane to Nanaimo. ◆ See ‘VALUABLE’ /7

FEDERAL PROGRAM cuts hidden within last month’s budget bill. BY CHRIS HAMLYN THE NEWS BULLETIN

RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
A Nanaimo woman hopes Canadians will rise up on the country’s birthday to protest the dismantling of environmental protection programs in the federal government’s budget. Dana Haggarty, a marine biologist on educational leave from Parks Canada, wants Canadians to send the federal Conservatives a message by wearing green on Canada Day (July 1) instead of the usual red and white. The Conservatives’ omnibus budget bill introduced last month, Bill C-38, includes legislative changes to Old Age Security, Employment Insurance, health care, immigration and more. But it’s program cuts, layoffs and amendments to environmental assessment, including the federal Fisheries Act and Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, that have many Canadians upset and Haggarty looking to make a difference. Having worked for the federal government, she knows where the public service cuts have landed and their effects. “Because of my interest in the environment, in particular the marine and aquatic sciences, the stories of cuts and closures to scientific labs have really affected me,” she said. “Colleagues of mine working on ecological integrity monitoring lost their jobs from the cuts.” ◆ See ‘IMPACTS’ /3

Four arrested after alleged home invasion
Tuesday, May 29, 2012 Nanaimo News Bulletin
Nanaimo a finalist to host newscast
Impacts of budget felt widely
Police have four men in custody and the rightful owners reunited with their stolen TV set following a home invasion early Sunday. The incident happened about 2 a.m. when two men, with their shirts covering their faces, broke into a home in the 600 block of Stirling Avenue. A 24-year-old woman inside was shoved to the ground when she tried to stop the intruders from making off with a TV. The men jumped into a pickup with two other men already in the vehicle and sped off. A man, 50, in the home, and male friend, 42, called police and chased the pickup in another vehicle until they lost sight of it near Fifth Street. The men gave police the truck’s licence plate number and RCMP tracked its owner to a home on Glen Crescent. Based on descriptions of the men given by the victims, police arrested two men at the residence and two other men who were leaving in a taxi. Police also found the stolen TV in an alley near the home on Glen Crescent. All four suspects, ages 36, 23, 20 and 19, were scheduled to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Monday to face recommended charges of robbery and breaking and entering. No one was injured in the incident. Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the home invasion appears to be a targeted and there is no danger to the public.
◆ From /1 The last straw for Haggarty was hearing about cuts to a program regarding contaminant research on marine mammals. It was then she came up with the ‘I Will Wear Green’ campaign. “To be able to handle my disillusionment over all these cuts, I had to think of something positive that I could do,” she said. Canada Day is one of Haggarty’s favourite holidays, when the country transforms into a sea of patriotic red and white. This year she would like to see green added to the celebrations. “Wouldn’t it be great if people wore green to send a message that the environment is important to us?” she said. “If you look at the polls of how many people feel strongly about the environment, I don’t think they buy the line the government gives us that the majority of Canadians support these cuts. Canada is its environment and we’re seeing it dismantled.” Christianne Wilhelmson, Georgia Strait Alliance executive director, said efforts like Haggarty’s are welcome. “There are still a lot of Canadians who are not aware of what’s going on. The announcements are coming at a pretty rapid rate and it can sometimes numb people to what’s happening,” said Wilhelmson. “The more we can do in different ways to get the message out of this government’s attack on democracy the better.” Bob Jackson, Public Service Alliance of Canada regional vice-president, said the nearly 400 union members in the central Island survived relatively unscathed in the first round of cuts, but that’s not to say layoffs won’t happen. “DFO has been mandated to cut $73 million from its total budget, and what we’ve seen so far is they haven’t reached that,” he said. “We’re anticipating more cuts.” Jackson said the public needs to be aware of how severe some of these cuts are going to be and the union is encouraging people to have a conversation with their MP. “Make an appointment to meet them at their constituency office, pick up a

pen or send an e-mail and ask them the rationale for doing this,” he said. “This government doesn’t have the mandate to do what they’re doing. The people of this country don’t want to see it dismantled bit by bit.” James Lunney, Nanaimo-Alberni Conservative MP, said the government is not out to destroy the environment. “We are working to make sure environmental laws are applied in a way that actually benefits the environment and not just create a process that wastes a lot of money,” he said. “There are a lot of changes in the budget because we’ve been through five and a half years of minority, dysfunctional parliament that has delayed decisions that should have been introduced long ago.”

Haggarty has received positive comments on the campaign from others who fear for the environment, and hopes the momentum continues to build. Nanaimo’s Canada Day celebrations take place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Maffeo Sutton Park. “It’s a great, simple, visual initiative that could have a big impact,” she said. “We’ll have T-shirts and logos, or people can just pull out the shirt they normally wear on St. Patrick’s Day.” For more information, please go to www.weargreencanada.org. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Winona Adams loves her city and she wants others to love it, too. So she entered a contest to get the morning crew on Global TV News to broadcast from Nanaimo. She recently found out the city is a finalist, along with Campbell River, Squamish and Princeton. “I love living in this city,” said Adams, who transferred to Nanaimo more than 30 years ago as part of her work with the federal government. “I thought, why not sell it?” She cited Nanaimo residents’ friendliness, plus the plethora of parks and wildlife in her nomination form. She said she hoped to help promote tourism by showing that Nanaimo has grown from its roots as a roughneck, industrial town. “They think of the old Nanaimo,” Adams said. “You have to come here now.” Voting for the winner began Monday, with the top community receiving a breakfast sponsored by Save-OnFoods, from which the Morning News team will broadcast on June 24. Adams would also win $1,300 in groceries from Save-On, which she plans to donate to the food bank. “I’m blessed, so I need to pass it on,” she said. Strong connections to culture important for Aboriginal youth BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
Aboriginal students who feel connected to their culture were more likely to also feel connected to school and to exercise more regularly. This is one of the key findings of the McCreary Centre Society’s latest report about the health of Aboriginal students in B.C. The report uses data from the society’s 2008 Adolescent Health Survey – more than 3,000 students identified themselves as Aboriginal in the survey – and also incorporates feedback from groups of Aboriginal youth and adults in each health authority. Nanaimo school officials consider high levels of cultural connectedness an important factor in keeping students healthy and ready to learn. Laura Tait, the school district’s principal of Aboriginal education, said there are Aboriginal employees in every school who support students academically, socially and emotionally, and serve as role models. The district also developed, in conjunction with Vancouver Island University educators, a workshop to help all employees increase their ‘Aboriginal literacy’. The workshop runs through a basic history of First Nations peoples as well as current issues and offers suggestions on building positive relationships with Aboriginal communities and students. It also challenges
teachers to take action and include Aboriginal content in lessons, even if there are no Aboriginal students in their classes, added Tait. “The more that we instill respect for different cultures, kids are going to come to school feeling proud of who they are,” she said. “If you feel good about who you are, are you going to do better or worse on that exam?” All students benefit when all viewpoints and perspectives are valued, added Tait. Sharon Hobenshield, V I U ’s d i re c t o r o f Aboriginal education, said the department offers support for students to help create a sense of belonging for Aboriginal students at
the institution. Support includes a peer mentorship program, Shq’apthut: A Gathering Place – the new Aboriginal centre designed to resemble a traditional Coast Salish longhouse – and eldersin-residence. “The elders are the heart and soul of everything we do with Aboriginal education,” said Hobenshield. “We look to them for guidance on how we can support Aboriginal students. It’s more than just culture, it’s their lived experience and knowledge of the distinct communities they represent.” Aboriginal artwork, programs and services on campus remind First Nations students the

institution is acknowledging indigenous history and traditions, said Hobenshield, but another goal is educating the student body and community. William Yoachim, a Snuneymuxw First Nation councillor and executive director of Kw’umut Lelum Child and Family Services, said his organization hosts cultural activities, such as language classes, that have a huge impact on the children. “Knowing their culture and where they come from has built a sense of self-esteem and self-pride,” he said. “When they’re feeling good, they’re thriving in other areas of life.”

Annual gathering draws thousands of Jehovah’s Witnesses
Valuable skill sets learned in cadets
◆ From /1 Macluskie said he remembers what it was like when he was a cadet and curious about the workings of the airplane and now it’s fun to be on the other side and answer questions about the CF-18. One of the best pieces of advice he can give to the youth is to keep working hard and learning the skills taught in cadets, he said. “Cadets sets you up really well for anything you want to do afterwards. There’s the discipline, the hard work, you have to be committed, all of those skills are transferred directly to flying CF-18s, going to school or pursuing other options,” said Macluskie. Groundwater said it’s great to have a former cadet share his experiences with the air squadron. “It really boosts my morale – you know this guy has done it, and I can do it as well if I put my effort into it,” he said. Ginny Church, a level 3 training officer for the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 205 Nanaimo, said she’s thrilled to be part of the air cadets. Church started as a cadet in the mid-1970s and now helps instruct youth. She said the air cadets isn’t a recruiting tool for the Armed Forces, but if a cadet chooses that career path, the skills they learn are a good stepping stone. The air cadets’ end-ofyear ceremony was held Sunday at the airport, with Macluskie participating as the reviewing officer. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

NEW PROTOCOL would formalize, guide co-operation.
BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo trustees want to formalize the relationship the school board has with city council. A motion directing staff to develop a protocol agreement between the school board and the City of Nanaimo to guide the relationship between the parties on matters of mutual interest was passed at Wednesday’s board meeting. “It provides a for mal structure, commitment –
we’ll commit to a certain number of meetings per year,” said Jamie Brennan, school board chairman. “It really makes sense for us to meet on a regular basis. We have a lot of potential for working together to jointly develop land.” He said the idea stemmed from a recent meeting between the school board and city council. There have been two meetings between all board and council members since the district eliminated all of its sub-committees last fall, including the city-district joint use committee, in favour of having all trustees present at two standing committees, said Brennan. He said there are several properties the district and

city jointly own and the two parties have agreements in place for other properties, such as a Dickinson Road property the district leases to the city for a dog off-leash park. Ongoing discussions include partnering with the city and others to make the Rotary Bowl a multi-use facility, Brennan added. The agreement would also highlight the importance of the relationship between the city and district, he said. Coun. George Anderson said council was awaiting a decision by trustees and a similar resolution must now be adopted by council for the matter to go any further. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com
Thousands of Jehovah’s Witnesses will gather in Nanaimo this weekend to celebrate and share their faith. An estimated 3,200 Jehovah’s Witnesses – from Nanaimo to Port Hardy and Powell River – will attend the annual district convention held at Frank Crane Arena from Friday to Sunday (June 1-3). The Nanaimo convention is being in conjunction with other gatherings across Canada and around the world. In Canada, there will be 51 conventions in 21 cities, with an estimated 175,000 people expected to attend. Attendance is free. “Everyone is welcome to come out and attend any session,” said Leif Rosvold, Nanaimo district convention spokesman. This year’s theme is safeguard your heart and various symposiums held throughout the convention will discuss how protecting one’s figurative heart can enhance the quality of their lives and preserve the prospects for life in the future. “The spiritual heart, symbolic heart, we feel it is very important,” said Rosvold. “The Bible talks a lot about it
– to safeguard your heart.” Morning sessions begin each day at 9:20 a.m. The Friday afternoon session starts at 1:50 p.m., Saturday’s begins at 1:35 p.m. and Sunday’s is 1:25 p.m. Just like taking care of your health through exercise and proper nutrition, people also have to ensure they have a ‘good spiritual diet’, Rosvold said. The Saturday discussion will examine a number of issues dealing with the theme: Do just as you have resolved in your heart. Saturday’s events also include a morning baptism session. Sunday features further discussions on the convention’s theme and includes live theatre in the afternoon. The play depicts four young people as they come to grips with the question: what is true love? The mid- and northIsland congregations are also working on the construction of a Kingdom Hall in Nanaimo on Old Victoria Road. Sidewalks and curbs are being constructed and work on the building is expected to begin in September. The project will be completed by volunteer labour from members of the mid- and north-Island congregations. For more information, please go to www.jw.org. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Biking benefits are worth a tryy Traffic in Nanaimo isn’t that bad if considered in comparison to places like Victoria or Greater Vancouver. Down-Island, the Colwood crawl is a legendary pinch-point of vehicles converging into a kilometres-long stretch of mindnumbing traffic congestion. Yet even that isn’t enough to get thousands of drivers, many of whom are going only a few kilometres from the ‘burbs to downtown, out of their cars and onto bikes to bypass the bumper-to-bumper headaches. Ironically, many of the drivers caught in the crawl look over to the Galloping Goose regional trail and watch cyclists pedal past them, saving time, money and stress while gaining myriad health benefits from commuting by bike. Here in Nanaimo, the biggest pinch points back up motorists for no more than a few minutes – longer only if there’s a traffic mishap – yet there’s no shortage of complaints from commuters who, like so many Victorians, are going only five to 10 kilometres to get to work. Still, those frustrations about even minor holdups fail to provide the necessary impetus to get people out of their cars and trucks. Skyrocketing gas prices aren’t doing it either. Yet, there’s just no good reason not to bike to work (or ride a bus, walk, in-line skate, etc.) – time, money and health all lean in favour of bikes. Unfortunately, we humans lean on our vehicles like a crutch. They’ve become ingrained in our way of life, so much so that we make countless sacrifices just to support our four-wheel addictions. Once a year, Bike to Work Week organizers attempt to cure us of that addiction by offering various encouragements to give cycling to work a try. Hopefully, a few of those who do make the effort stick with it and become advocates for a healthier, wealthier way of getting to and from work or wherever one needs to go. Canada, outer space, including the If Ceres is composed of just 25 moon and celestial bodies, are not per cent frozen water, it would
have more water than all the fresh water on Earth, according to SpaceFlight Now. With resources on Earth becoming stressed under the pressure of human development, space might be where people turn to for future expansion. Mining an asteroid might be better than strip mining a section of Earth, which could mean the destruction of sensitive habitat. It could mean that forested areas that hide precious resources in the earth could be saved from mining pressure. People need to be careful how they use resources no matter where they come from, but the idea of mining in space opens up a whole world of possibilities that make me hopeful for the future. We need to learn to conserve, but at the rate the human race is growing, will conservation be enough to meet future needs? Asteroids might hold the answer. According to the video release from Planetary Resources, there could be an asteroid that contains more platinum than has been mined in all of Earth’s history. Private companies are now embarking into space for commercial opportunities. On May 22 the SpaceX Dragon of Space Exploration Technologies – also a California company – launched. On May 26 it docked with the International Space Station, delivering 453 kilograms of cargo. It was the first mission for commercial space transportation. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

City can protect water interests My opinion is that we do not need to sign anything. We can tend our own garden. Matt James Nanaimo

Signing on to a Blue Community Project is a message to some corporations that Nanaimo is not willing to do business in the future.
stipulates that we can bail out at any time and for any reason without any legal obligations. The signing of a Council of Canadians policy or project may in fact deter foreign investment in our community. An agreement on one policy will lead to other craftily-worded policies in the future. To sign a clean water agreement might also tie us to their anti-pipeline ideas in the near future. The Council of Canadians is also involved in many other projects and stands on beliefs that not everyone in B.C. will agree with. The anti-corporate attitude suggests that local governments need to be put blockades against free enterprise.
Some city residents need bottled water People in city hall don’t know reality To the Editor, Re: ‘Blue Community’ plans sunk, May 22. Being the ‘voice in the wilderness’ is difficult, but the fact is I require bottled water to remain healthy. Having extremely high blood aluminum levels means that on doctor’s orders I must use water completely free of all metals and chemicals, for drinking and cooking. Usually this means distilled water, though reverse osmosis from a reputable source can be used. Distilled water comes in bottles which are then recycled. There is a 20-cent refundable bottle fee per bottle plus a five-cent environmental fee which is not recoverable and amounts to a water tax. Reverse osmosis water is bought from a machine where you can provide your own container. If safe drinking water is recognized as a basic human right, does this include water that is safe enough for those of us with medical issues? Reverse osmosis water filtration machines at
No smoking gun on pesticides To the Editor, Re: B.C. Premier bitten by pest problem, B.C. Views, May 24. The editorial on cosmetic pesticides written by Tom Fletcher skates around the body of medical and scientific evidence linking these toxins to such illnesses as childhood leukemia and Parkinson’s disease. In his words, the “right thing to do” is to do nothing about cosmetic pesticides. I imagine if he were living in the ’60s, he would be arguing that the
123
Vietnam War was the right thing to do, or in the ’70s that concern over the nuclear arms race was merely “political.” The problem with cosmetic pesticides, like DDT or cigarettes, is that there is no smoking gun. It is going to take time to convince some people that pouring poison on their lawn could harm their children. In the case of Fletcher, I think it will take a lifetime. I pity his children. To the Editor, Re: Council responsible on water decision, Letters, May 26. Coun. George Anderson is very young, but he is learning quickly to think in terms of mind-jangling, soul-destroying, baffle-gabbing bureaucratese. He has stated publicly in his letter that he is prepared to sell his soul with these words, “…it is my job to make evidence-based decisions, not decisions based on just my moral belief.” It is good that he has ingenuously revealed this to us now, when he might still be saved. Nanaimo city hall people get very far removed from reality with their huge salaries and power. When I was being hounded by them to make my rental suite legal, with many costly renovations, I don’t think they would have cared if both myself and my longterm tenant had dropped dead of heart-attacks in the process, and it would never have appeared on their reems of documentation – just stamped – ‘Legal’. To the Editor, Re: Council responsible on water decision, Letters, May 26. The Council for Canadians is a non-profit Ontario-based organization. It is waving a red maple leaf logo and include ‘Canadian’ in its header, but it is not an official government entity. We should know who they are and what they represent before signing off on their Blue Community Project. The Council of Canadians’ water campaign is calling for a national water policy that protects Canada’s water from bulk exports and or privatization. I have a real problem with this because some locations in B.C. require fresh water to be delivered by third parties. The big corporations also offering bottled water services to the community are here to make money and employ local workers. To suggest that the City of Nanaimo could be responsible to provide free fresh water stations at hundreds of venues is an expensive proposition. Signing on to a Blue Community Project is a message to some corporations that Nanaimo is not willing to do business in the future. This is not in the best interest of a city that just invested huge in a convention centre. If we do sign in on the Blue Community Project we should have a clause that

The beat goes on Two Nanaimo high school students the first female drummers to win national awards BY MELISSA FRYER THE NEWS BULLETIN
T
hanks to women of previous generations, millions of Canadian girls grow up knowing they can do or be whatever they choose. They can be businesswomen, carpenters, caregivers or artists – so no one told Natasha Hoskins or Rachel Skeeles they couldn’t be drummers in their Wellington Secondary School band. The Grade 12 and 11 students, respectively, won top drummer awards at MusicFest Canada, the national music festival and competition in Ottawa last week. Hoskins won Outstanding Combo Drummer Award while Skeeles took home Outstanding Drumset Player Award – the first time female students won drum awards. It’s also the first time students from the same school won top drummer awards. “I don’t know why it’s a guy’s instrument,” Skeeles said. “You don’t need to be aggressive to play the drums.” Rock and metal bands often have a certain type of drummer as part of the image – one that’s not always accurate for music, said Hoskins. “You don’t have to have huge muscles or tattoos,” she said.
The awards came with a set of four Zildjian A custom cymbals with case. Although they don’t have many female role models ahead of them, they do see younger female drummers coming behind them. “It seems like it’s just getting popular in our generation,” Skeeles said. Hoskins agreed, adding, “It’s exciting that there’s more of us out there.” Hoskins took up the drums in Grade 9, when another student graduated and left a spot in the percussion section open. “I said to Carmella [Luvisotto, Wellington band teacher], I think I could do this,” Hoskins said. “I watched the other drummers in the school and I just fell in love with it.” For Skeeles, it’s her third instrument. She said the Nanaimo music community is supportive, such as teacher and musician James McCrae. The young women also benefit by travelling to events like MusicFest or the Idaho Jazz Festival where they see topnotch performers from across the continent. Skeeles has another year to decide what to do after graduation, and while music will always be part of her life, her

career interest lies elsewhere. “I like a lot of things,” she said. “I’m really passionate about the environment.” Hoskins, however, is going to take full advantage of a partial scholarship to Capilano College that she won at the Kelowna Jazz Festival to study music. Both encourage more young women to try out the drums. “You never really know
what’s going to happen,” Hoskins said. More Wellington students picked up awards at MusicFest, including: McCartie Combo, Manns Quartet, Gunn-Rey Duo and Senior Jazz Band won gold; Grade 11 tenor sax player Josh Rey won a scholarship to the Douglas College Summer Jazz Intensive;
Grade 12 vocalist Amy McCartie, Hoskins and Skeeles received $1,000 scholarships to Humber College in Toronto; McCartie, who also plays baritone saxophone, received a $1,000 scholarship to Vancouver Island University and was also selected prior to the competition to play in the Yamaha All Star Band. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Collaborative effort aids creative process BY MELISSA FRYER THE NEWS BULLETIN
Brasstronaut follows up a highly successful first album with a new disc and a tour to introduce their latest effort to fans old and new.
At the top of an old warehouse, among the worn woodwork of the old shop, a group of jazz musicians found inspira-

tion for their new album. It was summer in East Vancouver and Brasstronaut was composing its new album, their sophomore release and follow-up to a Polaris Prize-nominated debut. “It was a more organic, collaborative process with all six members contributing,â€? said lead singer Edo van Breemen. “There was a real lack of pressure in the whole process.â€? The band toured Europe, Canada and other parts of the world, and in the close quarters that often drives bands apart, it drew Brasstronaut closer together. Writing in the warehouse was just a group of friends, who happen to be professional musicians, churning out ideas. “No one wants to be a rock star in this band,â€? van Breemen said. “It’s about the music and the stories we tell with the music.â€? Some of those stories will be told tomorrow night (May 30) at the Queen’s during g a concert with ĂštidĂşr, a band from Iceland. The freedom of the second album is a departure from the first, which was mostly written and recorded during a residency at the Banff Centre. Van Breemen said

that experience was much more beneficial to him personally as a professional musician. He explored music with other professionals and people who chose art as a career – something he didn’t imagine while studying chemistry, environmental science and urban planning at the University of British Columbia. He studied classical piano at age nine and began composing at 17. Music was a way to escape meditatively. “I’ve played music my whole life, van Breemen said. “It was always really fun to play in bands. Like all members of Brasstronaut, van Breemen has a side project called Mood Hut, a collection of electronica writers and players. “I get bored sticking with one type of genre, van Breemen said. The show begins at 9 p.m., with doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets $12/advance; $15/ door. Please call 250754-6751. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Juno Award-nominated children’s entertainers The Kerplunks celebrate the release of their first DVD with a concert tour. To create the DVD, called Get Creative, The Kerplunks worked with Frederic Robinson of FPR Productions. It features songs like Eggs, Licorice Stick and B-I-C-Y-C-L-E. For The Kerplunks it’s all about audience interaction, and the DVD captures
that interactive flavour. The project was more than two years in the making. The group performs June 9 at the German cultural hall in Nanaimo, and June 10 at the Gabriola community hall. Both concerts start at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Kool and Child and Gabriola Artworks. For more information, or to order Get Creative, please visit www.kerplunks.com.

Senior A Timbermen back on track I LACROSSE TEAM defeats Coquitlam Adanacs 7-4. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Nanaimo Timbermen threw everything they had at the Coquitlam Adanacs, and it eventually resulted in a win. T h e C o a s t a l Wi n d o w s Timbermen senior A lacrosse team defeated the Adanacs 7-4 on Sunday night at Frank Crane Arena. The T-men put one of their best-ever lineups on the floor, including new addition Cory Conway, but it took some time for them to get to Adanacs goalie Nick Rose. “We hit a lot of posts but he was playing really good angles and I think we kind of wore him down and wore their team down,” said Kaleb Toth, T-men veteran. Conway, facing his former team, hit a couple of posts in the first period and dished two assists as Nanaimo held a 2-1 lead. The score stayed that way until the last five minutes of the second, when the visitors scored three times to take a 4-2 lead. “I said to them, ‘It’s not time to panic,’” said Art Webster, Timbermen coach. “‘We’ve got to keep going to the net, we’ve got to stay with the game plan, don’t give them any transition and the ball’s going to go in the net for us.’” Conway made it 4-3 early in the third with a transition goal, Toth tied the game soon after and the Timbermen took over. “We wanted it more, we worked harder than they did and usually the hardest-working team will win the game,” said Zak Boychuk, T-men goalie. “We

went back to our basics tonight and played like we can.” Webster said Boychuk played his angles well and said the defence kept the shots to the outside and limited Coquitlam’s opportunities. “On the D end we didn’t give them [shot-clock] resets,” said the coach. “As much as possible, we tried to take those away.”
Scott Ranger led Nanaimo with a hat trick and Kyle Hofer and Cody Bremner were other scorers. Boychuk made 41 saves. “It felt great, getting the win against the old team; it was good,” Conway said. “It was a hard-fought win coming back from behind. Everybody was contributing.”

Pirates win via blowout, sweep Tritons The premier Pirates didn’t miss a beat as they returned to league play. The Hub City Paving Pirates baseball team swept the White Rock Tritons on Sunday on the mainland, winning by scores of 11-0 and 3-1. Playing their first regular-season games since May 13, the Pirates (17-4) came out swinging in White Rock, pounding out 12 hits in their blowout victory. Bryan Odgers led the offence with a single, double and a triple and Brady Rogers had a single, double and three RBIs. Alex Rogers also singled and doubled, Ben Dunbar added three RBIs and Justin Clarkson had a double and two walks. The 11 runs were plenty for pitcher Luke Skingle (6-0), who allowed just two hits and two walks and struck out six in a complete game. The second game saw Colby Morgan earn the win on the mound, as he scattered five hits over a complete game. Offence came from Braeden Mousseau, who hit an RBI single, and Nate Odgers, who doubled. GAME ON … The Pirates play the Parksville Royals (6-15) on Wednesday (May 30) at 6 p.m. at Parksville’s Springwood Park. Next home action for the Pirates isn’t until the weekend of June 9-10 when the Coquitlam Reds and Abbotsford Cardinals, respectively, visit Serauxmen Stadium.

Junior T-men lose two more games
www.nanaimobulletin.com
DBL men defeated on road
The Nanaimo Timbermen junior A lacrosse team lost 11-6 to the Port Coquitlam Saints on Saturday at Frank Crane Arena, then lost 12-2 to the Coquitlam Adanacs Sunday on the road.
The Nanaimo DBL Timber men were slowed down by backto-back road games on the weekend. The city’s senior B lacrosse team lost 10-8 to the Valley Rebels on Friday, then lost again Saturday, 13-3 to the Tri-City Bandits. T-men player Shawn Swanson said his team might have had a bit of a “ferry hangover” on Friday after meeting at 1 p.m. and finally stepping on the floor at Abbotsford at 8 p.m. “That’s a long time, and it took us awhile to get into that game,” he said. “But I think we can play with that team.” New addition Russell Thomas scored two goals, as did call-up Connor Buick. Other T-men goals came from Rick Fields, Billy Good, Jon Diplock and Ryan Clark. Pat Mallough suffered the loss in goal. The next day’s loss saw an undermanned Nanaimo team fall behind 6-0 after one period. Diplock scored twice and Thomas had the other goal. Kevin Good was the goalie of record. GAME ON … Nanaimo (3-4) plays Ladner (4-1) on Thursday (May 31) on the mainland.
