Mountie in fatal crash now facing charges A Chilliwack RCMP officer has been charged in connection with a collision that killed 20-year-old Steve Genberg of Mission last summer and seriously injured his 19-year-old passenger. Const. Jordan Braid has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. The Abbotsford Police Department investigated the incident and forwarded its findings to Crown counsel. The charges were sworn against Braid last Friday. Braid was on duty and driving a marked police vehicle just after 11 p.m. on July 12, 2011, apparently en route to a reported domestic dispute. He allegedly crossed the centre line and collided head-on with Genberg’s Ford Mustang on Highway 7 near Bodnar Road in Agassiz. Genberg was reportedly leading a convoy of four or five vehicles travelling on their way to Harrison Hot Springs. Baird is also facing an ongoing code of conduct investigation in relation to this incident. He remains on administrative duties and is currently not involved in any front-line police operations, according to the RCMP. He makes his first court appearance June 26 in Chilliwack.

New role for Chilliwack hospital rehab unit Some Chilliwack patients will now go outside community for care Robert Freeman The Progress A 20-bed subacute unit at Chilliwack General Hospital lauded for it’s “homelike atmosphere” is being turned into an outpatient clinic. But Fraser Health officials say

rehab patients will be “happier and improve faster” at home than in hospital. “In the past many services were only provided in a hospital setting,” Valerie Spurrell, Fraser Health’s rehab director, explained in a Friday news release announcing the change.

“Outpatient programs, like those we’re adding at Chilliwack, are changing that,” she said. Fraser Health expects to double the number of rehab patients who can be cared for at hospitals in the region, as a result of the change. But Chilliwack patients who continue to need “high-intensity” rehab will need to go to hospitals in Surrey and Port Moody, and those with “less intensive” inpatient requirements will need to

go to rehab beds at Abbotsford General Hospital. Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz was not available at press time to comment on Chilliwack patients needing to leave the community for inpatient rehab care, but she told The Progress she would be phoning FHA officials later Monday. Province to scrap AirCare for regular vehicles Black Press Citing a sharp drop in air pollution from cars that have become ever cleaner, B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake said the provincial government will scrap AirCare emission tests for light vehicles by the end of 2014. The decision will end a longstanding irritant for many Lower Mainland motorists who saw the program as an unjustified cash grab that cost them $46 every two years. And Lake also promised fees will be reduced in the last year of

the two-and-a-half year phase-out period. “Times change, technology changes and it’s time for progress,” Lake said, adding the move will save families money. He pledged a review of the need for emissions testing in future, suggesting the program may be retooled to test heavy trucks or other vehicles, but made no guarantee. Less than half the regular cars and light trucks on the road currently go through AirCare under the current rules, because of an eight-year exemption period for new vehicles.

Most older cars that are tested pass AirCare without difficulty but those that fail must get a tune-up and re-test to get insurance. Thirteen per cent of those tested in 2007 failed. A multi-agency review in 2010 found the air quality benefits and health impacts justified keeping AirCare until at least 2020. Lake agreed there would be some benefits to continuing, but said they are diminishing. “Technology appears to be solving its own problem,” he said, adding a shift in focus to dieselburning trucks, off-road vehicles and even ships may yield bigger

air quality and health benefits. Metro Vancouver’s board voted in 2010 to retain AirCare and the decision was narrowly endorsed by the Fraser Valley regional district board. Both regional boards supported a continuation, coupled with an expansion to test large diesel trucks. The AirCare program is run by TransLink at a cost of $17.5 million per year, but that money was fully funded from the fees charged. Not everyone is applauding the decision. “There’s so many older vehicles out there that we need to

make sure are in good operating condition,” said North Vancouver City Mayor Darrell Mussatto. “If it affects the quality of our airshed, I have some concerns about it.” David Cumming, an AirCare inspector and one of 114 unionized employees whose jobs may be gone, called it a “backward step” that may lead to more pollution in the region’s constrained airshed. He said the decision means there will be no check to keep older vehicles clean or to prevent some drivers from tampering with pollution controls.

Tycrop sees innovation, invention in Rosedale But some ask if the manufacturing company has outgrown the community Greg Knill The Progress Two visions for the future of Rosedale clashed at a meeting called by Tycrop manufacturing Thursday to unveil the company’s plans in the community. One pictures Rosedale as a centre of manufacturing innovation and invention. The other hopes for a return to a quiet, pastoral farming community. Tycrop co-owners Gary Teichrob, Scott Mason, and Dave Keck said the latter isn’t going to happen. “I will tell you,” said Mason, “We’re not going anywhere.” Company officials called the meeting – which drew about 250 people – following speculation about Tycrop’s plans for the area. That speculation, said Mason, is at best premature, but much of it is wrong, “insulting,” even “rubbish.” He said Tycrop is committed to enhancing its operation in Rosedale – a community it has called home for more than 30 years. It wants to consolidate and redevelop

its existing properties, and hopes to eventually double its size with an expansion onto property it recently purchased south of the CN rail tracks. It is that property that has sparked the most discussion. The land is currently in the Agricultural Land Reserve – something Tycrop hopes to change through an application to the Agricultrual Land Commission. Gary Teichrob said that application has yet to be filed, but when it is it will contain a proposal that will enhance agriculture in the area, not harm it. But that argument failed to sway some in the audience. Indeed, some wondered if Tycrop should consider moving, rather than expanding. “I think, you’ve outgrown the community,” said one man. “The way I see it,” said another, “you guys are turning Rosedale into an industrial park.” The owners dismissed that suggestion. They said Tycrop has, and will continue to be, an important part of Proposed expansion

Rosedale. Of the 300 people it employs, roughly 270 live in the Rosedale/Chilliwack area. Their pay cheques help fuel the local economy, providing additional jobs in other sectors, and providing important tax revenue. Rather than leave, the company wants to invest $30 million in an ambitious upgrade that will modernize and contain its manufacturing operation indoors, providing a better work environment for its employees and less noise and disruption for its neighbours. “If we want to be a company that wants to compete and retain its 300 employees, it has to modernize,” said Mason. “That’s what will make us able to compete in a global economy.” The plan calls for two large buildings, on either side of McGrath Road. released for the first time at the meeting, show tree-lined streets, side walks, and a new multi-storey administration building. Phase 2 of the plan would involve expansion south of the rail line, with the addition of another 300 employees. But that expansion can’t take place without the ALC’s blessing. For that to happen, Tycrop must ensure there is no net loss of farmland in the area, and an overall net benefit to the agriculture sector in the province. Teichrob said the company will be crafting a proposal it hopes will meet the ALC’s stringent criteria. But Mason insisted the entire process has been – and will continue to be – above board. “We don’t have any friends downtown pulling strings for Tycrop,” he said. “We are a straight up company.”

Asked by one resident why Tycrop doesn’t build its new facility on existing industrial property within Chilliwack, Teichrob said the company’s strength comes from its people. Separate facilities at different locations would dilute that strength, he argued. “It really works well, if you have an inventive company, if you keep all your brain trust in one place,” he said, Residents also cited concerns about traffic – now and if the expansion goes ahead. Teichrob said the company will be working with the City of Chilliwack to ensure traffic flows are improved. Company owners said that while they can empathize with the community’s concerns, Rosedale has, and will continue to, evolve. “You have to understand, change does happen,” said Teichrob.

Target on target for Chilliwack The new Target store at Cottonwood Mall in Chilliwack is scheduled to open in the winter of 2013, the company said Friday. But people hoping to work at the store are already being invited to find out more about the company. Target recently bought the leases at several Zellers locations across Canada. The Zellers store at Cottonwood is one of those stores, the company confirmed. Target plans to open 125 to 135 stores in Canada, the majority of which will open in 2013. Approximately $10 million to $11 million will be invested to remodel each facility in order to bring “the full Target brand experience to Canadian communities.” Eighteen Target stores will open in B.C. in early 2013. Included in the list are eight planned Target stores in the Lower Mainland, in Abbotsford, Burnaby, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge and Surrey. This Chilliwack location is scheduled to open in the winter of 2013. The store will employ approximately 150-200 people and hiring will begin in 2013. But Fraser Health officials said in the news release that the outpatient rehab program — called the Rehabilitation Early Discharge initiative (REDi) — has proven successful at four other hospitals in the region. testing at the direction of the meter manufacturer, which cited concern about a possible flaw with some meters during manufacturing. Murphy said at least 700 have now been tested and just 0.5 per cent were found to be outside Measurement Canada’s accuracy standard of three per cent. Bills are being adjusted for affected homeowners, resulting in credits ranging from five to 10 per cent for consumption while the errant smart meter was operational. About two per cent of households continue to oppose installation of smart meters, accord-

ing to Hydro communications manager Cindy Verschoor. Opponents of the program argue smart meters pose a possible health hazard from adding an extra layer of radio frequency radiation and numerous B.C. city councils have passed resolutions urging Hydro to allow customers to opt out. “It’s really not viable to offer an opt-out,” Verschoor said, but added Hydro has still not decided how it will respond to hold-outs. Nobody in B.C. has yet opted to relocate their meter – at their own expense – to a more distant spot on their property, she added. The B.C. Utilities Commission previously reject-

ed smart meter opponents’ request for an injunction halting the program, although that decision is under appeal. Newly released tests conducted by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control found a bank of 10 Hydro smart meters forced to all send signals at once – something that doesn’t happen in practice – results in exposure of about four microwatts per square centimeter at a range of 30 cm, compared to seven microwatts for a microwave oven, 9.6 for a cellphone and 15.6 for a baby monitor. Time-averaged over a day, because the meters only actually operate one minute per day, the tests found exposure from a 10-meter bank in nor-

mal operation would be 0.0028 microwatts per square centimeter at 30 cm, dropping to 0.0012 at a range of three meters. The report said time-averaged RF exposure from smart meters at all of those ranges was “low” – less than 0.001 per cent of Health Canada’s safety limit of 600 microwatts per square centimeter of continuous exposure for general public areas. According to the opposition group Citizens For Safe Technology, 48 B.C. municipalities – including Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Burnaby and White Rock – have called for either a smart meter moratorium or an opt-out provision.

News Stove top fire sends woman to hospital A stove top fire sent a Chilliwack woman to hospital last Friday. Chilliwack firefighters were called to a home in the 47000-block Prairie Central Road at about 3:15 where they found a stove top fire had spread to kitchen vents and cupboards. “The fire was quickly extinguished and the home ventilated to remove the remaining smoke,” said Jeff Ullyot, assistant fire chief. But the lone female occupant of the house needed treatment by paramedics for smoke inhalation, he said, and then she was taken to hospital for further observation. No firefighter injuries were reported. Fire damage was limited to the cooking area of the home, but there is smoke damage throughout the house. The cause of the fire is under investigation by fire department officials.

The provincial government continues to throw millions of dollars towards Experience the Fraser, a plan to link existing parks and trails along both sides of the river from Vancouver to Hope. We hope it’s worth it. Most of the money, $2.5 million initially, went towards developing a concept plan – mapping out the hiking and biking trail links. But because of private property – some of it occupied by industrial businesses, such as saw mills, and even more of it being native land – the proposed trail has to go around them, for now. While connected by a line on a map, the trail in areas such as south Albion in Maple Ridge would consist only of a road shoulder and some signs indicating the route. So it’s not really one, long connected trail, but a series of independent existing ones. Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes suggests a small park fee be added to municipal taxes to purchase private, riverfront property if or when it becomes available, to expand the route – fill in the gaps. It’s a nice idea, but an expensive one. And would such a trail, if completed, really attract tourists – cyclists who want to ride the entire route just to say they did? Where’s the economic return if they’re just bypassing through town? And why wouldn’t they just take the Trans Canada Trail? Remember that? Who uses it? Who cares? Fraser Valley residents have a plethora of trails they use in abundance already – and some make up part of the Trans Canada Trail and Experience the Fraser. Municipalities already have plans to purchase private properties along the river, negotiate with them when they do become available, to expand trail networks. So what new is the provincial government spending millions of dollars on? As far as we can tell, nothing more than a line on a map. – Black Press

Invasive species and aliens in our midst Despite efforts by provincial biologists from both the Environment and Forestry ministries last week to locate and catch the suspected snakehead fish thought to be lurking in a lagoon in Burnaby’s Central Park, nothing has shown up yet. Which doesn’t mean it’s not there. This is one aggressive animal whose presence must be confirmed one way or another then, if found to be living in the lake, dealt with. The recent snake issue speaks to the bigger problem of alien species generally that have invaded many regions of North America and elsewhere. Alien species can affect agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture as well as tourism. Invasive alien plants can reduce crop yields by over 15 per cent and knapweed can reduce interior grassland forage potential by as much as 90 per cent. Given the interconnectedness

of global travel and trade, the introduction of species from other parts of the world is increasingly problematic. In San Francisco Bay, between 1961 and 1995 a new aquatic species established itself ever y 14 weeks. Invasive plants and animals pose many threats to native species. They are considered the second Margaret greatest threat to EVANS biodiversity after habitat loss or damage. They put many levels of stress on an ecosystem through competition for resources such as space, food, moisture, light, shelter, breeding sites, and pollinators. Then there are the issues of predation (as in the case of the voracious snakehead

fish), grazing and browsing. They can bring with them diseases and parasites native plants and animals are unfamiliar with and expose them to pathogens for which they have no defenses. And they can wreak havoc on genetics through hybridization and cross-breeding. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) estimates that 25 per cent of endangered species, 31 per cent of threatened species, and 16 per cent of species of special concern are all negatively impacted by alien species. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency classifies 90 alien species as agricultural or forest pests and regulating them is costing the Canadian economy some $7.5 billion annually. That doesn’t include costs related to problems with natural ecosystems. In the U.S., prevention, control, and loss

of production due to invasive species amounts to well over $137 million annually. “While the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is currently responsible for the import of aquatic animals into B.C., the aquatic invasive species legislation developed under recent changes to the federal Fisheries Act will give power to a province to ban specific species temporarily in a province as part of an emergency,” said Suntanu Dalal, communications officer with the Ministry of Environment. “The provinces are also represented in the proposed listing committee which will make recommendations as to which species to list permanently.” Live snakehead fish can be legally purchased in B.C. rumours that they were readily available. However, Dalal said that the provincial government will consider potential options for a ban on the live sale of the snakehead fish in British Columbia. It was an option Ontario ran with in 2010 when they discovered an infestation of snakehead fish. “In the short term, we will continue to focus on educating the public that it is illegal to release any fish into any water body in B.C. and we will take steps to remove this particular fish once confirmed,” said Dalal, stressing that it is an offence under the federal Fisheries Act to release a non-native species in provincial waters. “There is no way to determine how an introduced species will interact with the existing ecosystem but, in the case of the snakeheads, significant environmental damage could result.”

Money better spent on alternatives I also read your three-part series on Oil and Water and thought you had covered the subject reasonably well. I have also read the letter to the editor from Mr. John Hunter (No need for hyperbole in pipeline debate, Progress, May 24). He appears to be a man who knows what he is talking about. However, I would like to point out a few details that may have been missed along the way. Whether an oil spill in Vancouver Harbour or anywhere on the coast costs $40 billion, $4 billion or $45.63 is beside the point. There should never be an oil spill in the first place. If there were no tanker traffic and no pipelines the problem would be solved. Let’s face facts, folks, if it can happen, it will. Any oil spill is one too many and we should do

everything in our power to prevent them. We can have all the emergency measures in place and equipment on standby to clean up a spill, but we cannot contain it all. The damage that the Exxon Valdez caused, regardless of what the dollar cost was, is still evident in those waters and it may be decades before things recover. It has become even more serious now that our Federal Government, in their infinite wisdom, has chosen to close down Coast Guard bases in the area. Again, it doesn’t matter what kind of water the oil is spilled into or what kind of oil is spilled, it will still damage the environment to a greater or lesser degree. We can argue all day about this, but the fact remains that the water will be polluted and no one really

knows for how long or how seriously. We should do everything we can to prevent any more risk being taken, no matter who tells is that everything will be OK, that nothing can possibly go wrong or words to that effect. I repeat, if it can happen, it will. Having worked in the offshore oilfield for 15 years, let me tell you that Big Oil has one philosophy, and only one. “Our first responsibility is to our stockholders.” Frightening words, indeed, I think. Let’s step back and examine the evidence. Then lets spend the billions of dollars on trying to find alternative sources of energy. If it can happen, it will. Strata looks for somewhere to turn I am writing this in the hope that someone can give us some advice on the following serious concern. I am on a strata council and we are very concerned with the drug problem in Chilliwack. We have an owner in our building who has visitors, who are drug dealers (we have seen buys), prostitutes, and drunks. We have spoken to a lawyer and have an appointment for June with the Mayor to see if

the city can help in some way. Oh, did I mention that our owners are all over 55. So there are some in their 80s who are too afraid to leave their condo after dark. Even to take a garbage bag down. These ‘visitors’ roam the halls at all hours and are intimidating. Some bring in garbage bags of who knows what and camp in this apt for days. There are 17 decent law abiding citizens who thought they

could retire in relative peace and quiet, but now experience anxiety and we can’t sell our condos because of this one owner. I’m sure there are other buildings in this city that have similar problems and maybe have a solution for us. We are at our wits end. Chilliwack’s costume divas take on Cinderella Katie Bartel The Progress Karen Swinnard can’t walk into a FabricLand from here to Vancouver without being recognized. She’s not an employee; isn’t a famous clothing designer; heck, she doesn’t even consider herself a sewer. But she is a springtime costume maker, and throughout the year can be seen regularly venturing through the retail fabric outlet’s doors – sometimes two to three times a day. “I keep telling them they should just give me a key,” Swinnard smiled. For five years, Swinnard and her mother Joan Blattler have been sewing and designing costumes for the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts (CSOPA) junior program’s spring production. Come spring, life for these two women stops. They sew in the

morning, after work, late into the evenings, every weekend. To date, making nearly 500 costumes in total. The “costume divas” as they’re known at CSOPA are currently finishing up on the 50+ costumes for this year’s Cinderella production. But the thing is, these women, they’re not natural sewers. While Blattler loves to get behind a sewing machine, she confesses she’s a bit slow. And Swinnard is the first to admit she’s no Vera Wang. “The only reason I took sewing in high school was because I had to,” said Swinnard, who works in healthcare. “I always cut corners and I still do.” But the power of family has a way of twisting one’s arm. When Swinnard’s daughter Stefanie took on the junior program five years ago, she commissioned her mom and grandma to sew the costumes.

“I thought, ‘how hard could it be?’” remembered Swinnard. “A couple of animal suits with zippers, and that would be it.” Oh how wrong she was. More than 50 costumes, along with brittle nails, finger punctures, hand cramps, and a pair of frazzled brains later, the production was a go. “I was dark haired five years ago,” laughed Blattler. “But now all that’s here is grey.” Blattler’s basement, which has been transformed into a sewing room, looks like a bomb was detonated inside. Sewing pins scatter the floor, cutting mats, patterns, fabrics, threads, zippers, beads, lace clutter the tables. A storyboard of costume design ideas line the wall, and a rack of Cinderellastyle ball gowns, knights’ suits, and mice knickers is so full it can barely fit another hanger. Swinnard spends the year scav-

enging fabric shops looking for deals on patterns, material, embellishments and other such accoutrements. Instead of quality fabrics, they’ve used slippery and fuzzy materials for costumes, and once, they even made a tree costume out of hard-to-use upholstery fabric, because “it was a great deal.” “It would be nice to use quality fabrics, but with our budget, that’s not always possible,” said Swinnard. They’ve also cut costs by tracing out every size of a pattern before cutting it out. But because the junior program’s age group is between six to nine years old, many of the patterns have to be altered or custom-made to fit their petite bodies. Especially for boys. “There’s nothing for boys,” said Swinnard. But this year, it was the young Cinderella who gave them their greatest challenge. With a waist

practically the size of a toothpick, no dress pattern would fit. And so, the costume divas made an adult ball gown, the bodice of which they pinned to the little starlet’s body and then re-sewed to fit her size. Despite the challenges, near disasters and added grey hairs they face every year, they keep coming back for more. Because of the kids. “Kids are so honest in their reaction; they put on a costume and it transforms who they are,” said Swinnard. “One girl, as soon as she had the costume on, she started rubbing her tummy and flapping her wings, totally unaware of her actions – they live for this.” CSOPA’s Cinderella runs from May 31 to June 3 at Chilliwack Arts Centre. Black Press About 60 people gathered together on Sunday morning in Agassiz for the area’s first ever Defeat Depression walk. The walk was organized by Andrea McRae, and others who have lost loved ones to suicide, or have struggled with depression. MP Mark Strahl joined in the event with his family, and said a few words before the 9 a.m. start. “I had been hearing about this (national event) for several weeks,” he said. “And so I was so thrilled to find out we have an event in our area.” Defeat Depression walk and run events were held across Canada today, organized on a larger scale by the Mood

Disorders Society of Canada. Strahl said he’s excited to see the country’s new mental health strategy coming to fruition, and that it’s something he’s planning on working on in the future. He said it’s time for depression and mental health issues to be talked about more openly. “I have high blood pressure, and no one would say that I am a weak person for that,” he said, while the same isn’t true for those fighting depression. “We’ll continue to fight the stigma,” he said. Depression affects almost everybody in some way, he said. “It affects my family, and let’s be honest it probably affects every family,” he said.

Chilliwack student discovers change in Antigua Ashley Wray

Not only has she seen the children grow and mature, but she’s noticed a change in herself since first visiting Antigua.

Special to the Progress In three years of visiting Antigua with the Champions for Health Promoting Schools program, UFV student Leticia Frederickson has seen a change in both the young students on the island and herself. The Chilliwack resident is currently in the Caribbean with a group of kinesiology students for the month of May. There, the group of 18 is teaching life skills through classroom lessons and outdoor physical activities. Since first taking part in the pro-

The first year, Frederickson took part in the Champions for Health program as a student. For the past two years, she has returned as a teacher’s assistant to work with kinesiology instructor Joanna Sheppard, the creator of Champions for Health. “The first year was a big decision to come because it was pushing me out of my comfort zone,” said Frederickson. “And the second year I grew as a person because I was more invested in my role. I got to know everybody and their teaching styles, and learned through them as partners in the program.”

Now, in her third year, Frederickson has experienced new developments. “It has reinforced the passion that I have to learn from and work with children,” she said. “I’ve always known I wanted to teach, but this has given me the confidence I needed.” Being thrown into a new environment is a steep learning curve for the UFV students. While on the island, they are paired into teams of two and assigned their own schools where they teach four classes a day. On Fridays, the group hosts an event called the Unity Games, which is similar to a Canadian sports day.

The UFV students set up stations that promote different life skills, such as team work and listening. With one event in the morning and another in the afternoon, the UFV students work with more than 1,800 Antiguan students during their trip. “The experience gives you that extra boost you need to prove that you can do it — because you’re put in situations you don’t think you can thrive in,” said Frederickson. “This program challenges you in different ways — as a person, teammate and a teacher. I think that’s one of the most rewarding aspects.”

Community Vintage cars ready to hit the road for Cultus Lake church parade Cultus Lake Memorial Church hopes to see cars as old as the church – if not older – for an upcoming service. On June 12, the interdenominational church, which was built in 1948, is hosting its 19th annual collector car church parade. This isn’t your average car show, though. While, there will be shiny, old classics roaming the streets, one after the other, there will also be a touch of hallelujahs and amens. Brodeur back for Dark Horse tournament Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Vancouver Canucks goaltending legend Richard Brodeur will be in Chilliwack this weekend for the second annual Dark Horse Riders Charity Golf Tournament. Brodeur will lead a full field onto the links at the Cultus Lake Golf Course, with proceeds from the event going to the BC Cancer Foundation. Action starts with a shotgun tee-off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, carrying on until 9 p.m. One hundred dollars gets a golfer 18 holes, dinner and a shot at several trophies and prizes. There will be a silent auction as well, with a number of notable items up for bids. The most notable might

be a day of golf and dinner for you and two of your friends with King Richard. Brodeur, who has become an artist in his post-playing days, has also suggested he might provide a limited edition print for golfers to bid on. Last year’s event raised $17,000 and the Dark Horse Riders as a group raised $23,000 for the fight against cancer. So far this year, the team has raked in $42,000, helped by a $10,000 donation by lead sponsor Langley Concrete. A successful golf tournament could nudge them over $55,000 which would make original Dark Horse rider Paul King very, very happy. “We’re hoping it’s like last year, a beautiful day where people are ready to come

out and spend some money,” King said. It’s been an up and down year for King’s crew, all of whom will be riding or otherwise involved in the Ride to Conquer Cancer on June 16 and 17. On the plus side, the team quadrupled in size from this time last year, ballooning from three to 12 members. King rode in 2011 with Blair Peake and Paul AckahSanzah. To that list they’ve added Val Anderson, Edward Boudreau, Greg Cowan, Dan Desai, David Ford, Andrew Matheson, John McLean and Jeret Unger. But there was a sadness as well with the Dark Horse Riders losing Adam Cardinal. “He was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer, and

they gave him 18 months to live,” King said. “He was very determined that he was going to beat this thing. Every day, up until a week before he passed, he was dead-set determined that he was going to be out here for the ride. Then he went, just like that.” Cardinal had just turned 30. “He never seemed to give up and inspired everyone, including myself,” King said. “Losing him was a kick in the nuts.” Cardinal had an ambigram tattooed on his calf that read faith and (flipped upside down) hope. In his memory, the Dark Horse Riders will have that ambigram on their jerseys when they make the Ride to Conquer Cancer trip from Vancouver to Seattle. In the meantime, King

continues a furious battle of his own against cancer. He has spent more than five years battling lung cancer, and spent the last few months on chemotherapy. The chemo appeared to have successfully knocked out the problem in the lungs, but King’s cancer doubled back and found its way into his brain. Now, the 37-year-old faces a round of radiation treatments and won’t be riding in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. “In my last training ride, I had a fall where I just kind of zoned out, and deep in my mind I think I knew something wasn’t right for a while,” King said. “Once they found the cancer in the brain, I was told not to drive a car or ride a bike or anything like that. It’s a

kick in the ass because it’s something I wanted to do, but the experience and the money we’ll be raising is more important that the ride anyhow.” King may not be riding, but he will be involved. “I’m already looking forward to riding in 2013, but for this one I’m going to be the pit-crew, cheerleader, tent setter-upper, doing whatever I have to do,” he said. “We may try to sneak him across the finish line,” his wife, Meagan, added with a laugh. ● Get info at darkhorseriders.ca or check the Facebook events page at facebook.com/ events/355453191165787/ Ride to Conquer Cancer info can be found at conquercancer.ca.

Stingy D leads to draws Goals were hard to come by for Chilliwack’s U-21 Pacific Coast Soccer League women’s squad this weekend. The team played twice and scored just once. But that was good enough to earn a pair of draws against West Van FC and Kelowna United. Chilliwack faced West Van FC on the road Saturday, playing to a scoreless tie at Ambleside Park. “It was a tightly played game with limited chances for both teams,” said Chilliwack head coach Glenn Wilson. “Just very stingy defence at both ends.” Chilliwack returned home to face Kelowna United Sunday afternoon. Midfielder Reanne Beerwald scored to give Chilliwack a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but Kelowna equalized at the 60 minute mark and the teams

played to a 1-1 final. “That leaves us unbeaten through our first three games of the season,” Wilson noted. “But we’re still looking for our first win.” The women hit the road Saturday, visiting the Mid Isle Highlanders at Caledonia Park in Nanaimo. On the men’s side, Chilliwack played road games Saturday and Sunday against TSS Academy and West Van FC. Connor McMillan scored Chilliwack’s only goal Saturday in a 1-0 win over TSS Academy. May 19, 1936 â€“ May 24, 2012 Kurt Drocholl went to be with the Lord at the age of 76. He passed away peacefully with his wife DROCHOLL Ingrid by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Lovingly remembered by his wife Ingrid of 49 years, six children; Andrew Drocholl(Pam) , Esther Ratzlaff (Jeff) , Ruth Penner (Dale), Eva Reimer (Cam), Daniel Drocholl (Liz), David Drocholl, ten grandchildren, and sister Brigitte Lauch residing in Germany. Kurt, with his wife and two young children immigrated from Germany to Ontario, Canada in 1966. After working many jobs, in 1973 he decided to get his diploma in forestry and then moved his family to B.C. in 1975. He was drawn to B.C. because of his love of the forests and majestic mountains. He worked for the B.C. Ministry of Forests for many years. Our family gives heartfelt thanks to the wonderful caring staff at Cascade Hospice and Lodge and the many doctors and nurses who cared for him. Thank-you to church, family and friends, for all the precious prayers, love and support. Service to be held at Greendale MB Church on May 31, 2012 at 11:00 AM. He will be missed by his wife Carroll of 43 years, by his daughter Melinda and her husband Scott, his son John, his daughter Heather and her husband Steve and his daughter Angela, his 9 grandchildren, Dakota, Brandon, Taylor, Brianna, Braxton, Haley, Jayda, Parker and Cole. John will be missed by his brothers, sisters and their spouses, many, many nieces, nephews and friends and their children. John was â€œUncleâ€? to so many, and 1 Uncle in Holland. He was predeceased by a baby son in 1975, his Father and Mother; Gerrit & Wilhelmina Vermeer, his sister and brother in law; Sien and Arie Arends. John immigrated to Canada and settled in Chilliwack in 1953 at the age of 8, with his parents and siblings; they sailed across the Atlantic to Montreal then traveled across Canada by train to Chilliwack. John spent most of his life in Construction and for a time he owned a shoe repair shop in Merritt, B.C and Chilliwack, B.C. John was very involved with chuck wagon and chariot racing, he loved to hunt and go ďŹ shing. John and Carroll and their children and grandchildren loved camping. John put his everything into whatever he did. He was a great man and touched the lives of many, many people. He lived his life giving his heart to all. He now has gone to be with the Lord.
