Crime drops 6% in 2011

Criminal offences in Abbotsford dropped six per cent in 2011 compared to the previous year, according to the year-end statistical report released last week by the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). This brings the four-year reduction in crime
– from 2007 to 2011 – to 33 per cent. The report lists 9,049 total offences in 2011, compared to 9,636 in 2010. Decreases were noted in almost every one of the 25 categories listed. Among the most significant drops were in the areas of murder (from four in 2010 to none in 2011), uttering threats (down 26 per cent), arson (33 per cent),
vehicle theft (18 per cent) and assault (17 per cent). Among the increases noted in 2011 compared to the previous year were fraud (up 12 per cent), causing a disturbance (13 per cent), sexual offences (six per cent) and assault with a weapon (six per cent). Continued on A3

Const. Ian MacDonald said the APD has worked hard on dropping its crime numbers, and it’s not just following the provincial and national trends. He said the department has recorded more significant drops in several categories than what has been reported elsewhere. “To me, that is demonstrative of two things – hard work and an acceptance by the community about (our messaging),” he said. “Can you think of a more
supportive community?” MacDonald said this support includes citizens coming to public information sessions on the topic of gangs and drugs, and embracing the “Operation” series of anti-gang posters and videos that have been released over the last three years. Last Wednesday, more than 150 people turned out for the premiere of a documentary called Operation Lodestar: Parenting Matters, in which a mom shares her perspective of losing her son to drugs and gangs. MacDonald said the APD has also
increased its focus on crime analysis and the formation of units specifically focused on issues such as gang suppression, drug enforcement and crime reduction. This has given Abbotsford the reputation among criminals as a “bad place to do business,” he said, and in many cases has resulted in them leaving the community. “The word on the street is certainly changing. There differently is a different vibe (to how criminals view Abbotsford),” he said.

Abbotsford resident celebrates a century The world was different 100 years ago, and Helen Neudorf knows it well. On May 14, the Abbotsford resident celebrated a century of life. She was born in Eigenheim, Sask. in 1912. She and her family were the first generation of immigrant Mennonites from the Ukraine born in Canada. Her older brother died at 18 of pneumonia, and her three older brothers left home, so it fell upon 17-yearold Helen to haul the grain from the elevators to Laird (about three miles away) with a wagon and horses. She did that from early in the morning till late in the evening. As a young woman, she worked as domestic help for a professional in Saskatoon. Helen met a young man at her younger sister’s wedding, and a year later, in 1935, they were married. It was a simple service in Eigenheim church on a Sunday afternoon before harvest began, with a reception of coffee and buns in her parents’ yard.

where farm work was exchanged for construction work and other jobs. Helen’s husband had a stroke in 1984, and she nursed him until he died three years
later. Helen moved into Alliance Manor in 2003, and then joined a Hallmark retirement community in 2009. In addition to farm work and raising three children, Helen
worked as a cook, sang in the choir, played organ, carpet-bowled, baked delicious buns until her early 90s, and crocheted many afghans for family and friends.

Helen and her husband had three children, and made their livelihood by farming around Rosthern, Sask. In 1945, they were first in their rural area to have electricity installed in their house. This was such a novelty that Helen’s son told her that anytime they wanted the light turned on, they should immedi-
ately call him in from where he was playing outside. Electricity also offered Helen respite from the tedious and messy job of cleaning the household’s kerosene lamps. In October 1947, the family moved to the Fraser Valley. They lived in Chilliwack near the Vedder canal, and then seven months later found themselves in the flood of June 1948. “We had so much water that it reached the rafters of the barn, and the house

The next chapter of Ms Merkel’s work unfolded in SD35 (Langley), where she was involved in classroom instruction and curriculum development. Upon completion of a Masters in Educational Leadership through the University of Victoria, Ms Merkel became an administrator with SD35. After relocating with her family to Abbotsford, Ms Merkel accepted the position of principal in SD34. In addition to providing leadership to her school community, Ms Merkel has actively served on committees involved with professional development, the selection of classroom resources, and Settlement Workers in Schools. As she approaches retirement from the public school system, Ms Merkel is looking forward to having more flexible time to spend with her family and friends. She continues to work for Simon Fraser University as a member of various instructional teams for postgraduate students. She is also a regular sessions presenter in music education for teachers-intraining at Trinity Western University. Great music, good books, long walks, and serving the community beckon her on.

A Mission woman who is eight months pregnant was in a crash involving an Abbotsford Police cruiser on its way to an emergency call on Sunday afternoon. According to police, the cruiser was southbound on Riverside Street, and had its emergency lights and sirens on. The two-and-a-half-year member of the APD was responding to a 2:18 p.m. call for a single-vehicle rollover accident in which the driver of a Toyota 4Runner was trapped inside the SUV, at Sumas Way and Highway 11. The police vehicle approached a red light at Riverside Street and Harris Road, was unable to come to a complete stop and continued into
the intersection. An Audi, driven by a 28-yearold expectant mother from Mission, was westbound on Harris Road with the green light in that same intersection. The Audi collided with the rear driver’s side of the police vehicle. Both the driver and her 17-year-old female passenger did not appear injured, but were examined as a precaution. The police officer was also not hurt. The driver of the 4Runner, a 37-year-old woman from Abbotsford, was able to get out of her vehicle safely. This cruiser collision is being investigated by the APD. Police appeal to any witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.

Move quickly to improve farm safety The provincial government must move quickly to adopt the recommendations of the coroner’s jury which looked into the deaths of three mushroom farm workers in Langley in 2008. The jury has recommended that Worksafe B.C. take a much more activist role in enforcing safety rules on farms, including surprise inspections. It also recommends that farm workers take two-day courses on occupational health and safety, including being made fully aware of the dangers of confined spaces. These recommendations are clearly stating that farm workplaces be treated in a similar fashion to other workplaces. There must be safety committees and proper training at other workplaces — why should farms somehow be allowed to evade this responsibility? The inquest also pointed out the additional challenges faced when many farm workers do not understand English. They are limited in where they can find work, which in effect makes them indentured servants to a small group of employers. Employers in this situation have far more control over their lives than any employer should have. The province can make a difference in the mushroom industry and other farming operations, and in preventing future senseless tragedies. The jury recommendations make that clear. The ball is now firmly in the government’s court. – Black Press

B.C. Views Premier Christy Clark has a new political problem buzzing around her office. A year ago, the newly appointed premier was looking to change the channel for an unpopular government grappling with the fallout of the harmonized sales tax. Newly appointed NDP leader Adrian Dix was touting an idea that is all the rage with urban folks, a ban on “cosmetic pesticides.” All the better B.C. communities already have one, starting with Clark’s old stomping ground of Port Moody in 2003. So she figured she’d better run to the front of this parade, swipe a popular policy from the opposition and do something to redefine the B.C. Liberal Party after the tax-cutting, regulation-repealing decade of Gordon Campbell. But first an all-party committee would hold hearings around the province, chaired by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. Bennett presented the committee’s report last week, and one could see what was coming. Bennett is the rifletoting outdoorsman who recently called on his government to abandon the carbon tax, saying it’s silly to
keep pretending B.C. can change the world’s climate. He was recently appointed by Clark to co-chair the B.C. Liberal Party policy committee for next year’s election, a strong signal of the party’s rightward shift in response to the B.C. Conservative threat. Bennett concluded after 10 months of hearings that the public aversion to common lawn and garden herbicides is based on “chemophobia” that flourishes due to scientific illiteracy. That statement is both politically dangerous and absolutely correct. I first covered this issue in the Okanagan 25 years ago, when environmentalists fought the use of Roundup by the forests ministry to knock down brush and promote new trees. The evidence boils down to this: these complex organic compounds break down in a short period to simpler, common components that pose no threat. Thus, with buffer zones around watercourses and temporary entry restrictions, they are safe. Unfortunately, most people know little or nothing about chemistry and refuse to believe this. It’s part of the scientific nonsense trend that has grown in B.C. society for decades. We have parents turning their backs on routine immunization because of superstitions about vaccines. We have people panicked about imaginary health effects of smart meters, egged on by shoddy, sensationalist media reporting. The parallels between local govern-

ment responses to smart meter hysteria and this scientifically ignorant push against “pesticides” is telling. As Bennett put it, when someone becomes convinced her child is at risk, “that mum is pretty darn compelling when she goes to council.” Few have the courage to stand up to that. The committee sought advice from Health Canada, whose scientists approve conditions of use for chemicals. Health Canada representative Lindsay Hansen said B.C. was the first province to ask for its advice, despite the fact that most provinces have imposed bans. These bans are political, not public safety measures, University of Guelph toxicologist Keith Solomon told MLAs. The committee also learned that “cosmetic” use accounts for only five per cent of pesticide use. Most of it is in agriculture, forestry and commercial pest control, with no ban proposed. MLAs in farming areas signalled their concern over the effect of this urban gesture politics. Backyard fruit trees go unsprayed and pests spread to orchards and fields. We have large areas of agricultural land reserve, but 85 per cent of the people who live in those areas don’t farm. The NDP is content to fan public fear and ignore evidence, as with smart meters and oil pipelines. The premier has a choice here. letter Save our water
I am a Grade 8 student at A.S.I.A. school and I have a project about water consumption. With The Run for Water coming up, it seemed appropriate to write to you. A person might not even think that the food they eat may have been grown in a way that wastes water. My project is on hydroponics, which is a process of growing plants without any soil. Hydroponics uses 70 to 90 percent less water than growing in soil. The water can be recycled making this a green solution. My teachers are teaching us about taking care of the environment and kids our age need to teach everybody else. I am only one person, but I wanted to tell as many people as I can about saving water when you grow things. It is time to save our water and have most things grown hydroponically. Caitlin Jones

Q Matt Revel was the top scorer at the U17 B.C. Cup hockey tournament in Salmon Arm last weekend. Revel racked up five goals and four assists in six games at the B.C. Cup, a tourney which prepares elite prospects for future participation in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. He was one of nine players from the hockey academy at Yale Secondary to be selected for the event, joining Jake Virtanen, Mitch Skapski, Ryan Simpson, Michal Holub, Zach Dyment, Kyle Baron, Cam Seto and Jared Virtanen. Q This Saturday, May 26, is Canadian Tire’s annual Jumpstart Day fundraiser. Jumpstart is a national charitable organization that helps financially disadvantaged kids between ages four and 18 participate in organized sport and recreation by covering registration, equipment and/or transportation costs. Since its launch in 2005, Jumpstart has helped 417,835 kids. Every dollar raised for Jumpstart stays in the community. At the Abbotsford location (32513 South Fraser Way), the local police and fire departments will be on hand for Saturday’s festivities, along with Abbotsford Heat mascot Hawkey. Q Registration for the Abbotsford Police Challenge Run will be held this Friday, May 25, at Envision Financial’s Minter Street branch from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The 21st annual Police Run goes June 9, and will include a 10km challenge route and 5km fun run with great prizes and games for the whole family. Proceeds from the event will go to Special Olympics B.C., which offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete in sports. Last year, the run raised $19,000 for Special Olympics B.C.

Wins were tough to come by for the Abbotsford Cardinals in the early portion of the B.C. Premier Baseball League season, but the local under-18 squad scored some big-time momentum by winning the B.C.'s Best tournament in Parksville. The Cardinals had never before claimed the title at the prestigious event, which runs each year on the Victoria Day long weekend and was marking its 18th anniversary. But the Cards went a perfect 6-0, beating the Nanaimo Pirates, White Rock Tritons and a trio of Victoria teams – the BCPBL's Mariners and Eagles, and the AAA midget selects – en route to the final. They tangled with the Okotoks (Alta.) Dawgs in the title game, and prevailed 1-0 behind a dominant complete-game pitching performance from Daniel Koo. Adam Revel drove in the game's lone run. "It was enjoyable to sit back and watch them play like I know there capable of," Cardinals head coach Corey Eckstein said. "Our pitchers worked ahead in counts all weekend, defence picked it clean, and our hitters one through nine stepped up in crucial situations. "I'm really happy for this group of players. They deserve this recognition." The Cards' BCPBL record is 7-10, but they're now on an eight-game win streak overall and hope to carry that momentum back to league play. "We're bonding as a team, I think," outfielder Tyler Krahn said, reflecting on his team's turnaround at the Parksville tourney. "The whole tournament was a team effort, and it was a lot of fun to be a part of." Q The Cardinals played the Langley Blaze on the road on Tuesday, but that result was unavailable at press time. They host the Fraser Valley Chiefs at DeLair Park in a Sunday doubleheader (12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.).

In the aftermath of the Canadian senior women’s basketball team’s 45-37 victory over China on Friday at the University of the Fraser Valley, Team Canada head coach Allison McNeill pondered the legacy of veteran point guard Teresa Gabriele. “She is really the gold standard for commitment to the national program in this country,” McNeill said. “I think she’s inspired a whole generation of young girls. Not to mention that she’s a fantabulous player – still.” Gabriele, a product of Mission’s Heritage Park Secondary, is now in her 15th season with Team Canada. At age 33, she’s the lone holdover from the last time Canada qualified for the Olympics, back in 2000. The 5’5” floor general plans to retire from the national team this year – hopefully after a trip to the London Olympics this summer. But first Gabriele and Team Canada have to survive the FIBA Olympic Qualification Tournament, which opens June 25 in Ankara, Turkey. The top five teams from that 12-team competition advance to London. While many of her teammates play professionally overseas, Gabriele works out on her own locally. She works for her family’s bread business, stocking shelves at Costco and Walmart in the early mornings before devoting the rest of her day to training. “At the last World Championships, we were the only country there without a domestic pro league for women,” McNeill noted. “So Teresa’s had to do it on her own, where a lot of players stop playing. But I think she’s inspired others to stay with it longer. She’s married, she’s going to have a family, but you can do both.” After she hangs up her high

Alisha Tatham was the only other double-figure scorer with 10 points, while Xiaoli Chen led China with eight points. Wei Wei, China’s towering 6’9” centre, hauled in seven rebounds, but Canada limited her to two points on 1-for-5 shooting. The game represented the rubber match of the Jack Donohue International Classic, a three-game exhibition series. Canada had won the opener 78-66 at the Langley Events Centre on Wednesday, and China won the second game 67-51 at
the Richmond Olympic Oval on Thursday. The fact the two teams were playing for a third time in three days manifested itself in two ways on Friday. Both squads struggled offensively, particularly in the first half – the product of fatigue and familiarity. The game also had a relentlessly rugged feel to it. “It gets a tiny bit chippy because it’s like guarding your best friend for three days,” McNeill said. “You kind of know them inside and out.”
“It’s about the development of the players, rather than trying to go in and be top dog. We obviously want to win everything . . . but players come out better because of the experience.” After opening the season with blowout losses on the road to Kitsap and Portland, the Mariners turned in a pair of competitive performances at Bateman Park on the weekend. The locals picked up their first point of the season on Saturday, as they battled the Washington Crossfire to a 1-1 draw. Ethan Claibourne-Collins supplied the Mariners’ goal. On Sunday, the hosts suffered what Errington termed a “heartbreaking” 2-1 defeat to the North Sound SeaWolves. The Mariners led 1-0 at halftime on Adrian Kekec’s goal, and could have had a couple more with a little better finish. But the SeaWolves rallied after the break, tying the game on a controversial penalty kick call and then getting the gamewinner moments before the whistle sounded to end the game. “We could have buried them in the first half,” Errington lamented. “In the end, it’s disappointing.” Q The Mariners (0-3-1) played the Whitecaps U23s on the road Wednesday, but that result was not available at press time. They return to Bateman Park on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tilt with the Sounders U23s.

GUILLOT Marlene Born January 29, 1941, in Owen Sound, Ontario. Passed away on May 9, 2012 in Mission, BC. Marlene is predeceased by her parents Harold & Goldie Furness. Marlene is survived by her daughters Laura, Susan, Nancy, Sharla, Teri-Ann, and Jacqueline; grandchildren, great grandchildren; and sisters Pauline and Haroldine. Marlene was a gifted artist and she created an extraordinary collection of oil paintings throughout her life that her family treasures. She was a writer and spent many years creating a book of her artwork. She had a passion for the natural world and would love nothing more than a walk through nature to inspire her to paint. Marlene had a flare for fashion and did some modelling in her youth. As well, she loved to keep physically active and was a gymnast as a teen and practiced yoga avidly throughout her life. At the age of 57 years Marlene received her masters degree in education after returning to school as an adult. She will live in our hearts forever.
