CALDER CUP
PLAYOFFS
Chasing the Calder Cup Milwaukee Admirals photo
With the Heat’s playoff run now into the second round, we take stock of the top storylines
Kolanos sparks Heat to sweep
Taylor making a name for himself
Rookie Reinhart steps up
Coach Ward’s stock soars
Krys Kolanos, the Heat’s leading scorer during the regular season, was unstoppable during Abbotsford’s first-round series with the Milwaukee Admirals. The veteran forward racked up eight points (four goals, four assists) to lead the Heat to the first series sweep in franchise history. “Krys is a money player,” Heat head coach Troy Ward analyzed. “He always wants to be on the ice when the game’s on the line . . . He feels like he can change the outcome of the game. “The big thing about Krys versus a lot of guys at this level is, you’ll find a lot of guys aren’t really sure they want to be out there when things are kind of hairy. But Krys always wants to be out there.” The second round has been tougher sledding for Kolanos, as the Toronto Marlies have limited him to just one assist over the first three games.
Journeyman goalie Danny Taylor (pictured above) has suited up for 12 different teams since turning pro in 2006, but he’s found a home in Abbotsford. With Leland Irving, the Heat’s 2010-11 MVP, spending much of the campaign up with the Calgary Flames, Taylor stepped in and performed admirably. And with Irving unavailable at the end of the regular season due to the birth of his first child, Taylor sparked the team on a winning streak that netted the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. When the playoffs began, it was Taylor who got the nod, and he came through with flying colours, backstopping the Heat to four straight wins. Taylor stumbled in Game 2 of the second round against Toronto, allowing four goals, prompting Ward to give Irving a shot in Game 3. But the 26-year-old goalie has made a strong case for a contract next season.
Max Reinhart joined the Heat at the tail end of the regular season, after his junior campaign with the WHL’s Kootenay Ice wrapped up, and he wasted little time making an impact. The 20-year-old centre made his pro debut in the regular-season finale against the Marlies, and scored two goals. He was a healthy scratch early in the playoffs, but distinguished himself in Game 1 of the second round against Toronto. Reinhart led the Heat to a 3-1 victory, notching a goal and an assist to go with a team-high five shots on net and a +2 rating. “The one thing about Max is, he finds himself to always be in positions to make an impact on the game,” Ward said. “We’ve seen him now, in a short amount of time, score some goals at this level, and that’s not by coincidence. That has to do with his hockey intelligence.”
Troy Ward’s impressive work in his first season at the helm of the Heat has earned him significant buzz as a candidate for NHL head-coaching openings. The Calgary Flames, the Heat’s NHL parent club, are among those in search of a new bench boss after parting ways with Brent Sutter. General manager Jay Feaster has lavished praise on Ward for his work in Abbotsford, and confirmed he’ll be considered for the vacancy. Ward led the Heat to a franchise-record 42 victories during the regular season – all the more noteworthy considering the AHL trimmed its schedule from 80 to 76 games this year. Abbotsford’s 11-game winning streak running from the end of the regular season into the playoffs was also a team record, and it’s clear the Heat have taken on the character of their even-keel, process-oriented head coach.

In each edition of the Abbotsford News's Faceoff magazine, beat reporter Dan Kinvig chats with head coach Troy Ward about the state of the team. We spoke with Ward last Saturday, prior to Game 3 of the Heat's second-round match-up with the Toronto Marlies.
Q The playoffs are a productive period for player development, and I imagine it's also a growth opportunity for coaches. How do you learn and grow at this time of year?
have to be a little more aware of instead of throwing them over the boards, so to speak, it has to have a little more method to the madness at this time of year. “Match-ups become more important. But they became more important in early March for us, because we were trying to get ourselves into a playoff spot. The last five years I’ve been in this league, the playoffs usually start in early March. That’s how it’s been for our team.” “But you’ve also got to be a good enough coach to realize that you can’t get too hung up on that (match-ups). Sometimes you’ve just got to let boys be boys – let them play and let them grow up.”
A “It’s about managing your bench a little bit differently than you do in the regular season. You’ve got WARD to be more aware of match-ups and Q Your team got off to a in-game situations. great start in the playoffs. What's “Obviously, for us, I’ve talked all year pleased you most about how the team about how we’re going to develop players, has gone about its business? and we’re going to move players in and out of the lineup. But at the same time, now A "I think we've been prepared, in terms in the development stage that’s going on, of coming out and generating a good start you have to understand who’s your bread to our games. For five games in a row here and butter in a game, and who’s giving you now, we've been really good out of the chances to be successful and who’s not gates. We're 4-1 in the playoffs, and we allowing you to be successful. And so you haven't really put ourselves in a (bad) spot. become a little bit shorter (on the bench) "I'm happy with that. Tips to Conserve & Reserve • Use a rain barrel. • Lawns only need 1 inch of water every 7 days to stay green in the summer. • Leave grass at least 3 inches long. Longer grass retains more moisture and requires less watering. • Use a spring loaded shut-off device on all hoses. • Use mulch, so water moisture is retained in the soil longer and plants stay cooler in hot weather. • Use a broom, not the hose, to clean walkways and driveways.

In the wake of a 4-1 home-ice loss to the Toronto Marlies on Saturday evening, the Abbotsford Heat find themselves trailing in a series for the first time in these Calder Cup playoffs. But don’t expect Troy Ward to reach for the panic button. In fact, to listen to the Heat head coach talk, he’s not certain as to the location of said button. He may not even be aware of its existence, metaphorical though it may be. Abbotsford has yet to solve the Marlies’ top-

goal just 58 seconds into the game. But on both fronts, Ward offered spirited post-game defences. He liked Irving’s play “a lot,” and he pointed out he evaluates the power play based on the number of scoring chances generated. Ward felt the Heat were much better in that department on Saturday than they had been in Game 2, when they went 0-for-9 with the man advantage. “We’re down 2-1 (in the series), but we feel awesome,” Ward asserted. “You guys (the media) might be a little down, but there ain’t nobody in that room down. We liked our game. They didn’t get out of their end at times, we did some good things on the forecheck. “You’ll find us all energized on Tuesday and ready to go (for Game 4). We’re excited. They’re the two seed – why shouldn’t we be excited? They’re an unbelievable team. We just keep coming at them. We love this (stuff). Seriously. We love it.” Irving, who watched from the bench as Danny Taylor started the Heat’s first five playoff games, got off to a rough start, as the second shot he faced found the back of the net. Marlies forward Nazem Kadri did the deed, sweeping around the net and tucking in a wrap-around. Matt Frattin doubled Toronto’s lead at the 11:43 mark of the first. The red-hot Frattin, who has scored in each of the three games in the series, stole the puck from Clay Wilson in the neutral zone, then swept in and fired a wrist shot from the left circle that deflected off Heat defender Chris Breen’s stick and went over Irving’s glove. The Heat got to Scrivens early in the second, as Dustin Sylvester tipped in Wilson’s point shot at the 2:21 mark. The hosts were pressing for more, and nearly got the equalizer when Greg Nemisz and Max Reinhart got away on a two-on-one break. Nemisz sent a pass across, but Reinhart couldn’t get a stick on the puck. Shortly thereafter, Continued on A28
