Plan reached to reconfigure The Falls golf course Robert Freeman The Progress The Falls golf course and resort in Chilliwack has apparently chipped its way out of the rough after meeting with city officials Friday. Details of a new development plan for the area were unavailable by press time Friday, but Michael Thornton, president of Silver Falls Development Inc., said “a very well thought out plan” had been reached. Earlier, Thornton said he was told by city staff that “reconfiguration” of the golf course for residential development would not be allowed. But he said some of the golf holes had to be moved for residential development to make the project “viable” for the Aquilini Investment Group. “With permission to develop the holes, then we can replace them and still have a great golf course,” Thornton said. “If they’re going to take away our ability to properly develop the site ... probably nothing (of the Aquilini proposal) will survive,” he said. But Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz said the city “never told Mr. Thornton that we would not at least consider his/ Aquilini’s requests.” However, she added that the city is also obliged to “balance the needs” of the Aquilini Group with those of Streetwise Capital Partners Inc. “We will consider any proposal, but have to balance the needs of both development groups, and just as important the residents who have purchased homes at The Falls,” she said. “Staff is hoping to work with both groups on the development of a new plan.” Streetwise managing director Kareem Sethi told The Progress his company does have development plans for the area and is not simply a “vulture fund” as described in court documents of bankruptcy proceedings against Blackburn Developments, developer of the hillside golf resort. ‘Pulling together’ for better health Robert Freeman The Progress Grab an oar, Chilliwack, and help pull this community into better health by taking part in programs soon to come from the new Chilliwack Hospital and Health Care Foundation. “We all need to become a part of this and grab an oar,” Chilliwack businessman Harry Mertin said about the new fundraising foundation. “If we do that, there will be such a wake behind this boat ... you won’t believe it,” he said. “We will have health care costs under better control, and we will have people not going to hospital unnecessarily, which means the people who do go will get better treatment sooner.” The Chilliwack foundation is

taking a new approach to fundraising, an approach that clearly has former B.C. Health Minister John Jansen and UFV President Mark Evered excited about the possibilities. Jansen and Evered signed a partnership Thursday that will see the foundation and university work together on developing new community health initiatives. “We’re doing things that is looking outside the box, a first in the province, and it’s going to make a huge difference,” Jansen said after the signing event held at the Cheam Leisure Centre. He said the Health Sciences faculty at the new UFV campus will work with the foundation “to find ways to involve the community in being more healthy and cognizant of health issues.” And Chilliwack, a proven lead-
er in community health initiatives, appears ready for the new fundraising concept that asks not just for donations, but for everyone to take an active role in creating health programs. “The enthusiasm level out there is just phenomenal,” Jansen said. “Our community is different. We have a different footprint, and I think we can really do something here that is unique.” Harv McCullough, UFV’s vice-president external and former dean of the Trades and Technology faculty, said the partnership with the new foundation is a natural fit for the university. “We’re both working toward a healthy community,” he said, and when government is cutting back on post-secondary spending, the university needs to find

alternate funding sources like corporate and private donations. “It’s a new (fundraising) concept here for us, and that’s the message we need to get out, and another way of getting that out is through the new foundation,” he said. “The general public doesn’t seem to realize the need to find additional funding sources,” he said. And while UFV students in programs like nursing, dentistry and kinesiology at the Health Sciences will be directly involved in studies leading to new solutions to community health problems, students in trades training are also learning about safe practices and safe building materials that contribute to better health. Local business gets a boost with ‘cash mob’ Jennifer Feinberg

The Progress First there were flash mobs. Now there are cash mobs. Cash Mob Chilliwack organizer Scott McVetty said the idea is to get a group of people to converge on a local business at the same time and spend $20 each. The first “cash mob” is set for June 1 at 7 p.m., at a Chilliwack venture to be announced at the last minute. “Cash Mobs are first and foremost about building community,” said McVetty, who is a local realtor in Chilliwack. “They bring people together, boost the local economy and introduce people to a fantastic local business, that perhaps they would not have even tried before.”

There will be an advance meeting place for cashmobbers revealed at the end of this week, through the Cash Mob Chilliwack Facebook page. Once the group meets at 7 p.m., the business will finally be revealed. “It will be a short walk, and we

will proceed en masse to mob the business,” he said. An after party will also be held at a nearby eatery, where everyone is encouraged to come for appies and maybe a celebratory beverage. “This way, we can actually support two local businesses in one night,” said McVetty. Beyond spending a little bit of their time and money, the cash-
mobbers are encouraged to meet people and have fun. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter are used to get the word out. The phenomena of cash mobs seems to be fairly new, getting established in 2011 in parts of the U.S. They are a grassroots response from communities to economic hardships experienced by the local business sector.
“It seems to be growing exponentially in popularity, and we hope with more people viewing the Facebook page, this trend will continue,” he said. He plans to see how long interest remains high. So there are 132 likes on the page, with a potential reach of more than 1,200 Facebook users. “We each do a little, we all do a lot” is the motto McVetty adopted for the group, after researching other cash mobs. “We understand we can’t save a failing business with a cash mob, but maybe we can encourage a few more people to shop locally. “Hopefully we can have a little bit of fun and make a few friends at the same time.” jfeinberg@theprogress.com

Chilliwack motorcyclist recovering in hospital Chilliwack motorcyclist is in stable but serious condition after an accident Thursday that closed Young Road for over five hours. “The motorcyclist in this case was very lucky,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.
“We want to remind drivers to be aware of the motorcyclists on the road to give them the space they need,” she said. The motorcyclist and a truck were involved in a collision, but the exact cause of the accident
is still under investigation. No charges have been laid. The impact of the collision threw the motorcyclist several metres into the air and left him with severe leg injuries, witnesses said. An RCMP collision recon-
struction team examined the accident scene, which required the closing of Young Road between Cheam Avenue and Chesterfield Avenue. The motorcyclist was airlifted to Royal Columbian hospital after the 1:30 p.m. accident.
An Agassiz man has died following a collision on the Lougheed Highway on Thursday afternoon. RCMP say the 91-year-old Agassiz man was driving southbound on Ashton Road, nearing the highway. His 19-year-old grandson was in the passenger seat. His car, a 2004 Ford Focus, reportedly failed to stop at the stop sign, and was hit on the driver’s side by a Ford pick up truck which was traveling east on Lougheed. Both vehicles ended up in the southwest ditch in the intersection, with major damage to the car. The air ambulance was called, and landed at the old Kent Hotel site. The Jaws of Life were used to take the roof off the Focus. Several first responders, including Agassiz firefighters, paramedics and at least one passerby, worked to get the man out of the vehicle and onto a stretcher. However, the 91-year-old driver of the car died on scene as a result of his injuries. The man’s grandson survived the crash, but was taken to hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the truck, a 74-year-old man from Agassiz, was also taken to hospital for minor injuries. Sgt. Peter Thiessen said environmental and road conditions do not appear to have played a factor in the crash. Several witnesses gathered at the scene shortly after the crash occurred, at about 12:50 p.m. Thursday. One woman who lives near the intersection said she heard a loud noise, and came out to see what had happened. Another woman lent a hand directing traffic. At press time, RCMP had not released the name of the deceased.

A newly announced Telus funding campaign will see them contribute $40,000 from Optik TV purchases to build a small “bowl” feature for BMX riders, to complement the plaza elements that skateboarders will enjoy at the new Sardis park. Council approved the plan to add $50,000 for the bowl at the May 1 meeting. Total cost for the Sardis skatepark project is now estimated at $300,000. “This will make the park more exciting for a broader group of users,” said Mayor Gaetz. The provincial government should move quickly to adopt the recommendations of the coroner’s jury which looked into the deaths of three mushroom farm workers in Langley in 2008. The jury has recommended that Worksafe B.C. take a much more activist role in enforcing safety rules on farms, including surprise inspections. It also recommends that farm workers take two-day courses on occupational health and safety, including being made fully aware of the dangers of confined spaces. These recommendations are not asking for the moon. In fact, they are merely stating that farm workplaces be treated in a similar fashion to other workplaces. There must be safety committees and proper training at other workplaces — why should farms somehow be allowed to evade this responsibility? The inquest also pointed out the additional challenges faced when many farm workers do not understand English. They are limited in where they can find work, which in effect makes them indentured servants to a small group of employers. Employers in this situation have far more control over their lives than any employer should have. This points out the necessity for immigrants to Canada to know some English (or French, in certain parts of the country) when arriving here, and the importance of boosting those language skills once they are here. Otherwise, they are at the mercy of employers — and some of them are far from scrupulous. The province can make a difference in the mushroom industry, and in preventing future senseless tragedies. The jury recommendations make that clear. The ball is now firmly in the government’s court. ~ Black Press

Possible snakehead sighting spine-chilling The report in the local media last week of a sighting of a snakehead fish in the lagoon in Burnaby’s Central Park is cause for some spine-chilling thoughts. Currently, the B.C. Ministry of Environment biologists are investigating but the mere idea of someone releasing such a menacing fish into the water is horrifying. With over 30 species, snakeheads are a predator y fish indigenous to southeast Asia and parts of Africa. They are tan and blotchy brown and can grow over a metre long. Their mouths, cluttered with sharp teeth not unlike pike or walleye, reach well behind the eyes earning them their reputation as top-level predators with a skill to kill. They will lurk in shallow waters feeding on fish, crustaceans, plants, and insects. With a primitive lung system, they can breathe air and have

the ability to navigate on land for several days, wiggling snake-like to a new water source if their original one dries out. One species can survive in cold water making Canada’s freshwater systems ideal habitat. It could cause havoc for aquatic ecosystems and recreational fishing. N o r t h e r n snakehead, native Margaret to China, Russia EVANS and Korea, were imported to the U.S. for aquarists and for sale as a food or medicinal fish to the Asian community. But irresponsible owners released unwanted fish into local ponds. Infestations have occurred in New York State, Maryland, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, California and
Hawaii. In Mar yland, officials tried to eradicate them by poisoning infested ponds but they have since surfaced in the Potomac River making their control vastly more complicated. When a snakehead showed up on a fishing line in Ontario in 2010, the province promptly banned the sale of all live snakeheads. Now the Lower Mainland is facing the dilemma. “A couple of people have seen it,” said Matthias Herborg, aquatic invasive species specialist with the B.C. Ministr y of Environment. “But they’re unconfirmed reports.” This week, officials from the City of Burnaby and the ministries of environment and forestry will use nets and look at the lagoon and nearby ponds to see what they can find, then decide on a course of action. “The most common means of snakehead introduction is
through their availability in some food markets and pet stores,” said Dr. Michael Russello, associate professor with the Department of Biology, UBC, Okanagan campus. “It is still legal in B.C. to sell live snakehead fish. The likelihood of more than one individual being introduced is dependent upon the mode of introduction, so it is really hard to say. Even the introduction of one gravid female could be devastating, as they can produce up to 150,000 eggs.” Pond management if a snakehead is suspected will be essential and really challenging especially if a self-sustaining breeding population is discovered which, Russello said, would make options for eradication quite limited. And successful eradication would depend on the number of individual fish that have been introduced.

“The number one precaution that the public can make is not to release any non-native species into the environment,” stressed Russello. “Invasive species are the second greatest threat to biodiversity (habitat destruction is the first). The best strategy to prevent such impacts is to avoid intentional or unintentional introduction in the first place. (Given that) selling live snakeheads is now prohibited by law in Ontario, I would think it prudent for B.C. to follow suit given the latest scare.” “We have to look at specifics,” said Herborg. “Once we know if the fish is there we will do some other techniques.” Like Russello, Herborg stressed the importance that the public not release aquarium fish into local waters. “It’s a huge risk and very hard to know what the consequences are.”

compensation (excluding punitive damages) in an extremely cold and remote area with no initial cleanup capability. In my view, Weyler’s $40 billion claim is ridiculous. His statements implying that tanker owners can escape liability have already been debunked by others interviewed for this article. Coleen Doucette of The Oiled Wildlife Society of B.C. claims there are no laws forcing oil spillers to respond to oiled wildlife. This is a half truth. The Environment Canada website for the 1990 “National Policy on Oiled Birds” allows the Canadian Wildlife Service to take over oiled bird operations if the polluter is not doing an adequate job, charge them the costs of cleanup, investigate the incident, and take legal action. She also claims that bitumen “burns the skin dramatically” – this too is false unless it is hot as in a refining process. Cold bitumen may produce moderate skin irritation. Lastly, the unidentified person who commented that the port has handled oil tanker traffic for more than 50 years is half right. It’s nearly a century, since Imperial Oil opened Ioco Refinery about 1915. There is room for debate, and errors in information will occur, but let’s try to stick to the facts, and skip the hyperbole.

Mr. Weyler says he based his $40 billion number for an oil spill cleanup “here” by comparing our situation to somebody’s estimated $50 billion cleanup cost for the BP offshore oil rig blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. He might as well compare it to the cost of a space shuttle flight; it’s total apples and oranges. Let’s look at the differences between our situation and that incident. First, there have been serious blowouts on oil platforms; in a century of tankers in B.C. waters there has never been a major spill, even in the half century before radar, electronic depth finders, GPS, tethered tugs, double hulls and coastal pilots on our tankers. Second, a double-hulled Aframax tanker moving at five knots with tethered tugs in Vancouver Harbour has the safety feature of 10-14 individual tanks; even if the total tanker load were leaked (an impossibility in my view), it would be 12 per cent of the BP blowout of five million barrels. Third, the BP leak was 5,000 feet deep, and unlike a tanker, had an unknown ultimate volume of oil escaping at high pressure and could only be inspected by remote submarines. Fourth, the Gulf spill continued for over three months; oil is not left pouring out of a grounded tanker in Vancouver Harbour for months. Even Exxon Valdez, a tanker carrying twice the load of our Aframax tankers, which hit a reef at 18 knots and ruptured eight of 11 tanks, cost “only” $4.3 billion for cleanup and

Unfortunately the second part examining the effects of a spill contained numerous unchallenged errors by interviewees. Firstly, Rex Weyler’s claim that bitumen hitting the water separates into gases and creates a toxic cloud is sheer fiction. If he meant diluted bitumen (“dilbit”), it is still a misleading statement, in my opinion. Some of the light diluent will evaporate, but it is harmful only if people stay in the area downwind for some time. Significant exposure can cause nausea, headaches, and respiratory problems, and people may need to leave the area, depending on the situation. Over a few days, the fumes dissipate. Like table salt, which is toxic above certain limits, it’s all about the dose. As to the threat of toluene and benzene, their concentration in dilbit is less than one per cent, or onethirtieth of that in the gasoline you pour into your lawn mower. The oil sinks to the bottom, Wyler claims. Some heavy crudes such as Mexican Maya may sink to the bottom of a fresh water body, but typical Canadian bitumen should not in either fresh water (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conclusion) or especially in our denser salt water. However, the final result depends on the crudes shipped, and a turbulent fresh water river could cause such problems.

We waited for funding from the government and got very little, so what are they planning for next year, and the year after that, and the years to follow? I’m not for raising taxes but if it will save Chilliwack and the investments that people have then it is something we need to do. “The best we can do” does not speak to me, as “we” the community of Chilliwack is relying on you to do something about this before it happens. Is anybody else not worried? If it does

skate park! Where are your priorities! A meeting needs to be called and discussions made on how we as a community are going to fix our own dikes. The provincial and federal governments can’t be relied on, but we as a community can do something. We seem to be able to save for other needed things, why aren’t we saving for this? I’m just livid at our mayor’s attitude about the Fraser River flooding downtown Chilliwack. Based on the information in the newspaper, the original berm is gone. It’s not there, it’s no more. The Family Support Unit provides in-home crisis intervention and support to families and children from Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) referrals. The Sexual Abuse Intervention program counsellor will explain the role of the counsellor and the effects of sexual abuse on children and youth. The Specialized Victim Services Unit will discuss their programs, how to access them and details on the kind of support they offer to victims of sexual abuse and relationship violence. CCS offers 10 programs
in all and services are for both women and men. The sessions hosted by Chilliwack RCMP are running for six consecutive weeks at the CCS offices on Wellington Avenue, every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon until June 13. The three remaining weeks will see presentations from the Ann Davis Transition Society legal advocate, the Mennonite Central Committee, RCMP and RCMP Victim Services. Young Parent Program gets boost from Coast Capital Savings The Chilliwack School District’s Young Parent Program has received a $30,000 grant from Coast Capital Savings, with the funds going towards services and support for pregnant and parenting youth. This is the second year the Young Parent Program has received funding from Coast Capital – last year, the credit union contributed more than $23,000 to the program. “Without this generous assistance from Coast Capital, this unique program would not be able to successfully provide enhanced services such as child minding,” said Joanne Kovanchak, teacher and counsellor for the Young Parent Program at the Education Centre. “A major challenge faced by students in our program has to do with juggling academics with the demands that come with being pregnant or a parent. Coast Capital’s investment in the Young Parent Program goes a long way in making this juggling act a little easier.”

Subway shop robbed again Robert Freeman The Progress Chilliwack RCMP are asking for public help finding a knife-wielding man who robbed a Subway restaurant last week on Yale Road near Williams Road. Police said a lone male entered the store at about 4:30 p.m. May 10, produced a knife and demanded money. “He fled the store on foot after receiving an undisclosed amount of cash from the employee,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said. “This robbery occurred during daytime hours,” she said. “We are hopeful that someone may have seen something that could assist us in our investigation.”
The same Subway outlet was robbed twice in 24 hours in January this year, and again a year earlier in January, 2010 when two men entered the store, one of them brandishing a firearm. The suspect in the most recent robbery is described as a tall white male, 40-50 years old, weighing about 210 lbs and standing about 6 feet tall. He has grey hair and was wearing a black- or dark-blue hooded jacket, jeans and white runners. He had the jacket hood pulled up at the time of the robbery. The Apeldoorn’s experience In a hectic world, it’s nice to know there’s a place where you can escape the everyday worries, relax and recharge. Jack and Barbara Smith are making Apeldoorn’s Restaurant that place. The couple recently took over the business, bringing a little Lincolnshire charm to an already popular restaurant. They hope to build on Apeldoorn’s reputation for fine foods, excellent teas and, of course, sumptuous desserts. The couple moved to Canada from England about 16 years ago, and had been looking for a business they could call their own. They had owned a shop in Lincolnshire (one of those classic grocery confectionaries that included a post office), but wanted to open a restaurant. “It’s always been a dream,” says Jack. As the couple did their research, they discovered Apeldoorn’s. “We liked the ambiance,” says Barbara, and they appreciated its popularity, not only in Chilliwack but throughout the Fraser Valley. “We even came down here as customers a couple of times,” says Jack. They liked what they saw: a cosy tearoom, with tables made from antique sewing desks and a warm and inviting decor. They also liked the neighbourhood. Located on Mill Street, Apeldoorn’s is an established part

of Chilliwack’s historic downtown. They’ve retained its emphasis on home cooked goodness, Jack says, with nearly everything baked from scratch. “The only thing we bring in are the ingredients.” Ute Tonn is in charge of the baking. She stayed with the restaurant when it was taken over by the Smith’s. “I’m part of the inventory,” she says with a wry smile. Rounding out the crew is their daughter, Sophie, who’s studying geography at UFV, while waitressing at Apeldoorn’s, Apeldoorn’s is open for light breakfasts and lunches. But the afternoon high tea is something worth experiencing. Guests are treated to a three-
tiered presentation that begins with delicate finger sandwiches and ends with fresh-baked scones, served warm with strawberry preserves and homemade Devonshire cream. (“We have a secret recipe for that,” says Barbara with a wink.) Book ahead, and the service will include linen napkins, and fine china tea cups. “It’s the whole experience,” she says. Apeldoorn’s is also available for catering, and special orders like birthday cakes. Apeldoorn’s is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Live longer, live happier Jennifer Feinberg The Progress A new trade show that zeroes in on healthy living and retirement planning is all about seeking a balance. Show organizer Gary Moran of Fantasy Farms said the two key areas, health and Ànancial planning, are naturally connected. It’s just never been linked this way in Chilliwack. “They do go hand in hand, and they became the concept for the show after we were brainstorming ideas one day,” he said. “It’s the Àrst time
we’ve ever done this. We think there’s a strong need for it.” Fraser Valley Retirement Planning and Healthy Living Show runs May 25-27 at Chilliwack Heritage Park, with product displays, presentations and more. “I think we have to start teaching our children about looking after their health more holistically and their Ànancial futures,” said Moran. He borrows a quote from Harvey Mackay who said: “Failures don’t plan to fail,

they fail to plan.” Dr. Art Hister, a popular TV medical expert, will be offering some health-based advice to attendees on Saturday, May 26 at noon and then again at 2:30 p.m. Dr. Hister will go over how to live a longer, healthier and happier life with a few powerful lifestyle changes. Chef Dez will sharing some recipes and methods for healthier cooking on all three days of the show. He’ll be presenting on Friday at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. and then on Saturday at
noon, 2 and 4 p.m. On Sunday Chef Dez is up on stage at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. There will be Àtness experts from the YMCA on hand to showcase the latest Àtness trends. Other speakers from MoneyConcepts and Vancity will offer advice for a secure Ànancial future; plus so much more. Dedicating a room to the art of washing clothes not unusual

By Maggie Calloway Remember when the washer and dryer were automatically banished to a dark corner of the basement? Well, no more! Laundry rooms are now not just any room, but a designed room. Doing laundry is now an experience, with topend appliances, drying racks, linen storage, granite counters and marble backsplashes. I must admit I approve of this metamorphosis; doing laundry was always such a grim but necessary chore. Having the right tools to do a great job applies to this job as well as any other, and a dedicated room fully kitted out is a wonderful thing. So what makes not just a stylish room but one that works well? Looks are important but not as important as workability. Think through the process: where are the soiled clothes stored? If you have side-by-side appliances make sure the doors open the right way; you don’t want to be loading the dryer over the door of the washer. Each should open in the opposite direction so a clear inner space is formed. Shelving for laundry soap, bleach and such should be above the washer and dryer but high enough to allow you to use the top of each appliance as counter space if you are in a small room. And let’s not forget the ironing board; you need enough space to comfortably put up the board and an installed rod to hang up finished items. This rod is also great for drying hand-washed delicates. Interior designer Marlene Bourque of High Design works with John Friswell of CCI Renovations on many of his projects including laundry rooms. “This last laundry room we worked on was originally an office on the main floor of the home. We had room here to put the washer, dryer and sink, etc. on one side of the room and a linen closet on the other which left lots of room for an ironing board,” says Bourque.
Laundry rooms are no longer hidden corners of the house where you dread visiting. Now, thanks to new innovations in design, it’s easy to drop in a load of laundry and get on with your day. Submitted photo
“This is a family with young children so having the laundry room on the main floor made great sense. Having lots of storage in a laundry room is a great luxury.” If your laundry room is small, installing closed upper cabinets could feel confining. Think about open shelving with attractive baskets. Old-time ceiling drying racks are back, somewhat sleeker in design but still doing the same job of drying clothes in an environmental way. Steal an idea from the garage and install a wall-mounted
storage system; it gets everything up off the floor and, done properly, can look quite chic. One thing I love in a laundry room is a very deep sink, again just like the old days, in which you can do many things, from leaving items to soak to washing the dog. This is one room in the house where you can go a little wild with great coloured walls, maybe some wallpaper and let’s not forget a T.V. to help with the ironing. Why not?
We may be gnashing our teeth about the slow start to the good weather this year but the cycle of rain then sun over and over again is perfect for making that green stuff grow, and I don’t mean your bank account! As with every other job, the right tools make light work. The men at Foreshore Equipment and Supply had some insight about what’s going on in the world of lawnmowers, what’s new and better and how we should take care of our current equipment, new and old. Al Chrzanecki of Foreshore has some tips for a homeowner in the market for a new mower. “Buy a mower to fit your personal circumstances; if you are on a regular-size flat city lot you don’t need a rider mower, you really only need a push mower,” says Chrzanecki “Push mowers are somewhat different than we remember from our father and grandfather’s day. Some of them will have bushings in the wheels so you will get longevity and it will push easier because they are a little smaller at 20 inches, which is perfect for the small lot.” Chrzanecki says gas mowers have also changed over the years. “The manufacturers have changed the design of the

Many changes in roofing “ from page.25 each individual roof. Andrew McDowell of 21st Century Roofers Ltd. is a second generation roofer; you might say it’s in his blood. The company, started by his dad in 1978 and taken over by McDowell four years ago, has grown from a small four-person business to twelve highly trained professionals. “There have been lots of changes over the years; for instance on a low-slope roof we used to build it up with felt, tar and a gravel finish. Today we can provide a modern high-performance alternative,” McDowell says. “We are very careful about using new products, some of which haven’t been around very long. Our company will only use proven materials and technology and which has a good warranty behind them. Some of the new materials have been around for ten years or less so we don’t know how they will perform over the expected life of the roof. Another thing to understand is some of the new materials don’t have CSA approval from the Canadian government.” He cites the example of a wood fibre product that definitely didn’t work. “In the 1990s there was a new roofing product
made of wood fibre in cement; it failed miserably. As we know cement is porous, as is wood fibre. This product may have been fine in Arizona but not in our climate and a lot of home owners suffered with roofs that caved in from the weight.” Metal roofs are growing in popularity. There are different types: metal shingles, metal cladding and barn profile. 21st Century uses steel metal cladding because McDowell feels the hidden system makes it much more water-tight. For most of us he says, a new roof is not a rewarding purchase that you can look at like a new television or sofa; it’s utilitarian. But not much else matters if on a dark and stormy night you hear the sound of water dripping onto your dining room table. Do your due diligence, check references, check to see if there is a string of complaints filed against the company and make sure you get the proper warranties. It also pays to check that the company is a member of an association like the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association which requires members to carry a minimum of $5 million in liability insurance, and is current with WorkSafe BC. Also, check to see if the company you hire subcontracts out. If they do you just don’t know who you are getting.

You can now push a button to prime and the fuel is available immediately to the combustion chamber, no more pulling and pulling hoping the engine will catch,” he says. “In my opinion they have designed the system so they will start almost immediately and are much cleaner burning.” If you have a larger property or a property that has a sloping lawn, a self-propelled gas mower is the way to go unless you want to fold pushing a lawnmower into your exercise program. Like all things in life, as Chrzanecki says, there is good, better and best and the world of lawnmowers is no different. “You have your basic steel deck push mower; a little better unit would still be a gas mower, still with a steel deck but may be self-propelled and mulch, which is a good thing; mulching is good for your lawn. As you get up the scale you get to a Toro model which they call a super mulcher. It’s an aluminum deck so the deck will not rot; it’s a 25-year machine if looked after.” Once you have sorted out what you need in the way of a mower, you need to take care of it if you want it to last and perform at the top of its game. Dana Nicholson, the fulltime mechanic at Foreshore, has 25 years experience with lawnmowers of every stripe. “My advice to everyone with a mower is to really watch which fuel they use and how they use it. The fuel we have from the pump has a very short shelf life; just a few weeks before it starts to break down. I recommend, as most people will have to buy fuel from a gas station, (buying) premium fuel with no ethanol and only buy a gallon at a time,” says Nicholson. “I know it’s inconvenient but unlike fuel in our cars which gets used up quickly, gas sits in a lawnmower for weeks and sometimes months. If possible, buy Aspen fuel from a store specializing in lawnmowers or power tools; this fuel is refined down so far it is very clean burning with a long shelf life. The other piece of advice is to keep the blades sharp and clean. Look after the mower and it will do a good job for you.”

Whatever you use it for, garden sheds have always held a special spot in our hearts; we have always thought of new possibilities for the small space. If you are an avid watcher of British home and garden shows, as I am, we have probably had a good laugh at the same time when a realtor, showing a client a property complete with a broken-down shed with the roof caving in, points out the potential of converting the relic into a pool cabana. Did you know in the U.K. a person over-fixated on building sheds and hanging out in same (I leave the interpretation of that to you), is referred to as a “Sheddie?” And in New Zealand there is a bi-monthly magazine called, what else, The Shed, directed mostly at ‘blokes’ who do DIY projects in same. Obviously there is a worldwide culture surrounding sheds, and something about them that fires the imagination. I first thought about writing about sheds when I came across a team building a new chicken coop at SAINTS, an animal sanctuary where I volunteer. Father and
son John and Mike Hynes have teamed up and created Rainforest Sheds to build notjust chicken coops but a variety of garden sheds, horse barns and dog houses, among other projects. John says there is a growing interest in sheds of all sorts. “If it’s feasible to build we can build it; almost every job is unique,” John says. I must say I am very impressed with the quality of their work. I even found, in my research, a Northern Territories government fact sheet called “When is a shed not a shed” which lists the difference between a house and
a shed. Who would have thought there needed to be clarification? There is a whole new world out there! Sheds have even moved into the music world. To woodshed, or ‘shed,’ in jazz jargon, is “to shut oneself up, away from the world, and practice long and hard, as in ‘going to the woodshed’.” Garden sheds aren’t just used for storing the lawnmower anymore. Fencing has come a long way from plain chain-link Is there any other single product that does as many jobs as fencing? It protects your children from the traffic and drowning in the swimming pool, protects your veggie garden from marauding animals (dream on!) and separates your property from your neighbours, among many other things. Not only are there dozens of reasons for installing a fence, there are also dozens of types and styles to choose from. We all drool over photos of the thriving vegetable and flower garden surrounded by a whimsical fence and gate complete with roses, but this is not what we are about today. We want to see what’s available in robust but stylish metal fencing that will do the job, is very low maintenance, and will enhance the curb appeal of your home. Not a lot to ask is it? Not according to Ken Scherk of Steelguard Fence Ltd. “My very first advice to any home owner with a pool who wants to fence is to check with their local municipality bylaw; each municipality requirements are different,” says Scherk. “Usually when you request a permit for a pool they will have specs for fencing. Keep in mind these specs are for the minimum required but we can tell them what it will take to keep the family safe.” Have you noticed the black metal fencing appearing over the last few years? It used to be a chain-link fence was either a natural steel or white and pretty industrial in appearance. Now there are different types of chain-link fencing available that you can place anywhere. The black chain-link almost disappears into the background. The other great thing about the new black fencing is that it is almost maintenance-free, it doesn’t show dirt unlike white or natural, and once installed it will last
almost forever, since a hose or the rain will wash off any dirt. The wire on a chain-link fence is coated with PVC with a UV rating which will stand up to ultra-violet light for decades. The posts are galvanized pipe over which there is a powder-coated finish, the same type of finish on a barbeque, so it will last for decades.

Happy memories for former Olympic athlete Each year, the Chilliwack Progress teams up with Brad Geary’s English 10 Honours class at Sardis secondary school, inviting students to write sports articles. The best of the best get published in the pages of the Progress sports section. Today’s is the first of four articles, this one detailing the sporting exploits of Mt. Slesse middle school teacher Eric Munshaw.
Nadia van den Berg Sardis secondary school There’s much more to Eric Munshaw, the technology teacher at Mount Slesse Middle School, than meets the eye. At the youthful age of 17, Munshaw made the Canadian national team in Canoe Slalom, attending the 1972 Munich Olympics that same year. The Munich Olympics was the first ever to use an artificial white water kayaking course, and therefore the team went to Germany a month prior to the event for preparation. As Munshaw says, “Every race course is different and has its own idiosyncrasies.” Everything about the Olympic experience was enlightening. “For many athletes, it’s difficult to stay focused in the Olympics because there’s so much else going on,” Munshaw said. First introduced to Canoe Slalom by his Boy Scout leader, who was a national champion, Munshaw became involved with the sport at age 13. When he turned 15, he was already training seriously on a daily basis. However, due to the fact that the sport was underdeveloped and not well represented in Canada, there were few coaches at the time.
“In my day it was very unusual to be part of an established team,” Munshaw says. That said, once he made the national team, there was ample opportunity for experience. Munshaw spent his summers training and racing in Europe, and during his international career he participated in three World Championships and one Olympics. He admits the most significant part of the sport was the real world experiences he had while traveling. Munshaw was exposed to different ways of living, and different perceptions of culture and history. “I really valued the sense of environmental awareness they have in Europe,” he said. During one World Championship, Munshaw dislocated his shoulder, which made the continuation of his career questionable. He eventually decided it was time to move on. However, not long after he stopped competing, a friend approached Munshaw and asked if he would be willing to coach a 19-year-old athlete. This was not at all what Munshaw had in mind. “I was expecting to just pull back and become a regular person again,” he said. But the 19-year-old ended up being a world class athlete, and inspired Munshaw’s coaching career for the next nine years. He became the coach of the national team, and personal coach to three world class athletes, all of whom won medals in their categories. No other athletes on the Canadian team were comparable to them. At one stage in his coaching career, Munshaw was approached by an American coach who asked him to coach an athlete on their

team. This would have involved coaching both a Canadian and American team member at the same Olympics. Although he declined the request, Munshaw describes it as one of the most venerating events of his career. He retired from coaching soon after. It comes as no surprise that Munshaw was involved in a very important process for the sport of Canoe Slalom and the Chilliwack community. The Chilliwack River white water kayaking course has been set up in such a way, that it not only benefits
those experienced at Canoe Slalom, but also amateurs in the sport. In addition, the Canadian national team regularly trains at this site. Since Munshaw was instrumental in the process of establishing this training site, he made a significant contribution to the community. Prior to Munshaw, there was no real focus to create the site, and today teams from all over the world come to here to train. Although he accomplished many things that the average person could only dream of, Munshaw says, “It was never about the awards,
it was about everything else. The cultural and eye opening experiences are worth a lot more.” However, Munshaw admits, had it not been for the support from his family, he would never have achieved what he did. “My wife was my coach for many years,” he said. “For any athlete involved in a sport on an elite level, it does not only involve dedication from the athlete, but also from the family. They live the life with you.” During the time he was involved in the sport, Munshaw also completed a teaching degree at

the University of British Columbia. After making the decision to stop coaching, he landed a job as a teacher. Many of the skills Munshaw learned as a coach, he uses now on a daily basis. It is no surprise that Munshaw won the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2008. To him, the award is an affirmation of many of the successful teaching experiences he has had. He takes it in stride with humbleness and appreciation for the journey, not the destination.

PROGRAM COORDINATOR YOUTH TRADES SUMMER STUDENT PROGRAM Stó:lô Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training (SASET), requires the services of a Youth Trades Program Coordinator. Pursuant to section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to applicants of Aboriginal ancestry.
