This program is for enthusiastic, committed youth who have completed Grade 10 or above by September, who like working with children and are able to make a minimum commitment of 100 volunteer hours with our following summer programs: • Summer Adventure Playground • Outdoor Camps • Summer recreation Program for Children with Special Needs • Specialty Day Camps • Our Town • Starlight Movie Night

Summer Youth Leadership Volunteers

This program includes a 3 day leadership training workshop, manual and Youth Leadership Team t-shirt .This is a great opportunity to complete you volunteer requirements for graduation, and/or receive credits towards work experience, build valuable experience and acquire references for the future. SUMMER ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND Make it a summer to remember by attending our free, drop-in, playground program. Children ages 5 – 11 are invited to join us for exciting playground activities at Gyro/Recreation Park. Parks and Recreation leaders are experts in creating fun-filled summer days involving crafts, games, songs, sports and other great activities.

Tuesday July 3 to Thursday August 16 (note: Playground leaders will not be at the Park on August 6 for BC Day)

Monday to Friday Gyro/Recreation Park 10 am – 4 pm Parents: Our playground leaders are trained to offer play leadership and general supervision. However, by the nature of the program there are often many children and all are free to come and go. Children who require special supervision must be accompanied by a responsible babysitter, guardian or parent.

Discovery Preschool offers a rich and stimulating early learning program in a bright, spacious and safe environment at Kiwanis Hilton Children’s Centre. Great preschool gym and outdoor playground. Rock, Paper Scissors Art Camp Ages 7 – 12 Say hello to your inner artist! During this art camp, unleash your imagination and create a spectacular, large- scale, plane, fish or even a waterbomber, paper mache mobile. Participants will also make colorful painted houses or cars on 6-8” rocks. You will be thrilled with the outcome of your projects! Supplies included. Sew Fun Camp Ages 8 – 12 SewFun, learn to sew the fun way! Join Maggie O’Niell, A Licensed Kids Can Sew & Fashion Design Instructor, in this fun sewing camp, and make your very own pajama pants and pillow case to take home. Materials list and example will be provided upon registration. Early registration is recommended to provide time to review the materials list and find that perfect fabric to create your projects with. Bring a healthy snack and water. Equine Camp – Level 1 Ages 7 – 14 Do you love horses? Then take part in this Horseback Riding program at Secret Creek Stables and learn how to ride a horse. As part of their day on the farm, participants will learn care and safety around horses; touch base on stable duties including feeding, brushing and cleaning stalls. Then it’s on to the main focus of riding lessons with a fun obstacle course at the end for new riders. Participants will also have time to horse around with a craft and other horse activities. Equine Camp – Level 2 Ages 7 – 14 Level 2 is an extension of skills developed in Level 1. This program is designed for those who have completed either Equine Level 1 with Parks and Recreation before or who have past experience with riding horses. Continue to develop your knowledge and skills of handling horses and how to care for them. As well as improve your abilities as a rider and increase your confidence in the saddle. Ready to advance

Technology Science Venture Camp For children entering grades 3 –5 Join us for an amazing science and engineering adventure brought to Port Alberni by the Science Venture Outreach Program from the University of Victoria. Discover just how fascinating and fun science can be as you explore biology, chemistry, physics and engineering concepts through hands-on activities, interactive experiments, building projects and outdoor pursuits. “Byte Camp - 3D Animation”

Kids Tennis Lessons

Ages 11 -14 “Dreaming of a career with PIXAR? Ever wonder how those awesome 3D animated movies like Shrek, Toy Story and The Incredibles are made?” Spend the week learning how by modeling, animating and telling your own stories in 3D. You’ll use wonderful (& free!) 3D software to design characters that jump off the screen and then make them come alive by adding voices, soundtracks and completing your own animated short film. “Byte Camp - Music and Video Production” Ages 9 -12 “Make your own music and music video!” Camp time will be split between digital music composition, video filming and editing. Use amazing software tools to craft your very own song from scratch. Play an instrument? Bring it to camp to record yourself and add a digital backup band. Experiment with video and editing techniques to make the video as cool as your tune. Learn how to add special effects too! Soccer Camp Ages 6 – 11 As one of our most popular summer programs, this camp provides a great opportunity for young players to improve their skills and prepare for the upcoming season. Instruction will focus on drills, skill development, games and teamwork. All participants will receive their very own soccer ball to take home! Players will enjoy a hotdog and drink on the last day of the camp, compliments of Buy Low Foods. Wakeboarding Camp Ages 9 – 14 Get on the water and show off your moves! Join the Sproat Lake Watersports Association and learn the sport of wakeboarding with instruction by Certified Wakeboard Coaches. Lifejackets and wakeboards are provided. Leadership ... Junior Leaders in Training Camp Ages 11 - 14 Looking to improve your leadership skills, develop experience for your resume and have fun with your peers? Participants will be introduced to effective strategies in leadership, communication, team-building and more in a fun, hands-on format. Youth will learn a variety of games, crafts and outdoor-based activities such as canoeing, hiking, scavenger hunts and more. This camp is a great way to develop new skills, build confidence and learn while having a blast!! Mount Arrowsmith Guided Hike Ascend the Judges Route to the crown jewel of southern Vancouver Island’s alpine region, Mount Arrowsmith. The route is not technical but steep so be prepared to scramble, use handholds and careful foot placement. Do you want to get a jump on the upcoming hockey season before league play starts? Join us for a fun pre-season conditioning, skills and drills class. This program is open to all adult male and female players who want to get on their skates and get a jump on the hockey season before league play starts. Jungle Fever Tuesday, July 31 at Gyro/ Recreation Park 6:30 – 8:30 pm (North Park & 7th Ave.) We’ll be in the wild for this Our Town event. Check out the African Safari animal hunt, parachute games, giant bubbles, 5 pin bowling, face painting, obstacle course and have fun in the giant sand pile compliments of Dolan’s. We always have high flying fun with the kites and a magic shoe by Ronald McDonald. You’ll also get to enjoy an evening of great entertainment provided by Marim Bam Buzz, West Coast Highlander Pipes and Drums, and the Valley Cloggers.
