Y OUR FOUR SEASON PLAYGROUND C Canada D Day With the coop operation of various co community groups, Si Sicamous’ Canada D Day celebrations are fam famous throughout the reg region as a perfect way to celebrate the nation’s bir birthday. Start off you your day at the Red Barn Arts Centre and enjoy the Sicamous Lion’s Club famous strawberry pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Musician Mat Duffus will perform on-site. You may fancy attending the Eagle Valley Brush and Palette Club’s Art Show at the Red Barn Arts Centre from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Activities continue mid-afternoon with family fun and games at the Sicamous Beach Park. You can take in the sights on a heritage horse and buggy ride from 3 to 6 p.m. Need to let loose? Dance the night away or simply listen to the music of Scarecrow, performing at the Sicamous Beach Park 7 p.m. until dusk. And for the grand finale, watch “Light up the Lake.” A spectacular fireworks show put on by the District of Sicamous. The finale begins at dusk (approximately 10 p.m.).
Sicamous Show & Shine Over 200 vintage and classic cars will take over Finlayson Park on Saturday, June 30. Stop on by, take a stroll and have a gander at some truly captivating vehicles from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Morning folk can start their day with a pancake breakfast. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served after 11 a.m. and the Sicamous and District Rec. Centre concession will also be open during the day. And enjoy the rocking tunes of the 50s and 60s with a performance by Louisiana Hayride in the upstairs of the Sicamous and District Rec Centre at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30. Sturgis North Burnout Competition Sturgis North will be returning to Sicamous in May and July. Starting May 26 the Sicamous and District Recreation Centre will be hosting a cabaret/concert as a lead up to the July 20 motorcycle rally. Also on May 26 there will be a trade show, show and shine, ball tournament and dance. Just a few of the events planned for July 20 include the burnout, a kids bicycle course, a skill testing motorbike obstacle course, bouncy castle, and beer garden. Classic Boat Festival The 2nd Annual Sicamous Antique & Classic Boat Festival, presented by the Okanagan Antique & Classic Boat Society, will be held this year on August 10 to 12 and will host up to 45 vintage boats of all types. The public is welcome to come down to the Main Street Landing Docks in Sicamous Channel on Saturday from 10am until 4pm; after which there will be a parade from one end of the channel through to Mara Lake. The labyrinth is available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. When you’ve traversed through the labyrinth, head over to the United Church’s thrift store. Crazy Creek A couple of kilometres past the Perry River bridge on the way to Revelstoke lies an opportunity to gaze up close as gallons upon gallons of water crash over the rocks at Crazy Creek Waterfalls. Mara Lake Provincial Park Mara Lake Provincial Park is a day use facility appreciated by picnickers and swimmers. The 5.9 ha property lies along the eastern shores of Mara Lake along Highway 97A and is 12 km south of Sicamous. The water is also a vital salmon habitat.
Malakwa Suspension Bridge Originally built by farmers who wanted a way to connect their farms to the rest of the community in the early 1900s, the bridge was rebuilt in 1940 by the Department of Highways. Drive east of Sicamous on the Trans-Canada Highway and turn onto the service road just past the Malakwa Cafe. From there, follow the road until it meets the railroad tracks and turn left on Summerville Husted Road. Signs will lead the way. Camping Cedars Campground Located 12 km east of Sicamous off the Trans-Canada Highway, Cedars Campground offers secluded camping spaces, camping cabins and RV sites. Across the highway from Yard Creek Provincial Park, the Eagle Valley Nature Park is a suitable venue for walking or bird watching. Giant cedar trees can be found and the view of the Eagle River is astounding. Located about 13 km east of Sicamous, the hiking logo is visible from the Trans-Canada Highway. Turn on Clifford Road.
Riverfront Nature Park North of Sicamous Beach Park, the nature park offers scenic walking and biking trails along the Eagle River and Shuswap Lake. Large cottonwoods and various birds greet both walkers and bikers.
Yard Creek Provincial Park Near Malakwa, the Yard Creek Provincial Park is a great day trip destination. Plenty of hiking trails and camping facilities exist over the 60 ha of land. Fishing, hiking, swimming and golfing are available. The park is well-known for its
McLean-MacPherson Road can be accessed by turning south at the A&W and leads to an eight km trail full of mountain bluffs, meadows and a forestry lookout tower. The trail offers a view of the Monashee Mountains, Mabel Lake and Shuswap Lake. When the road becomes gravel, a sign will indicate the trail head.
Old Sicamous Road This scenic trail provides walkers and bikers with a relaxing tour around the lake. It can be found by turning north off the Trans-Canada Highway onto Old Sicamous Road by the bridge.
Queest Mountain Without the snow, the mountain provides a beautiful semialpine terrain. The trail can be found by taking the 1800 Forest Service Road for 14 km. A parking lot and trail guide will be on the right. A chalet and fire lookout tower are 12 km past the trail head. Some visitors may decide to stay overnight in the chalet because the hike is rather long.

Known to be one of the best biking trails in the country, the Lizard provides breathtaking views of the Sicamous Creek Canyon and Mara Lake. A more laid-back hike at Two Mile is the short journey leading to a view of the Sicamous Falls. Several benches and rest stops along the way make for an outing the whole family can enjoy. Young children should be supervised as there are steep slopes. Two Mile can be found by travelling south on Highway 97A and turning onto Two Mile Road.

Everyone is encouraged to stop in and bring their own supplies. Every year around July 1 long weekend, the club puts on a fantastic Art Show that has people coming back year after year.
Banner Project Established in 2000, the Banner Project creates a visual community in Sicamous. The painting takes place over six weeks during February and March and people of all ages are encouraged to participate. Every year a theme is chosen, with this year’s them being “Sunand Fun.” The banners have decorated Main Street for the past 12 years. Sicamous & District Museum & Historical Society
Sicamous and the surrounding Eagle Valley is rich in history and the museum in Finlayson Park reflects much of this history in an eclectic collection of artifacts and archival material. Years ago, local businessman Allan Bell started collecting various artifacts
with the hope they would, one day, be displayed in a permanent museum in the community. In 1982, Bell turned the collection over to the Eagle Valley Museum and Heritage Society. This society later amalgamated with the Historical Society to form the Sicamous & District Museum & Historical Society.This year, the museum has moved to the new district hall on Main Street.

Houseboating boating licenses. Please check with the company you are renting through to verify. A pleasure craft operator card is required when bringing your own boat or personal watercraft. Shoreline exploring: Don’t neglect the joys of land as there are many hiking trails abound in the vicinity of Shuswap Lake. Make sure you bring proper footwear and a camera to enjoy the sights. Sun spotting: Since the beautiful skies will be right over your head, don’t forget to tune into the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets that can be experienced on Shuswap Lake. Buddy System: Practising the buddy system is helpful when swimming, as frequent location changing can be confusing. Sunscreen: Don’t underestimate the power of the sun’s rays. Make sure your sunscreen supply is sufficient and apply it frequently. Pack a sunburn relief gel just in case. First Aid: Make sure you have a first aid kit and let everyone on the boat know where it is. Many houseboat companies provide this, but double check with the company you plan to rent through. Communications: Consider purchasing inexpensive walkietalkies. They’ll come in handy when the kids ask to explore the trails. Education: Educate yourself on harmful plants like poison ivy and make sure everybody knows what not to touch. Safety: Confirm the presence of life jackets and fire extinguishers. Make sure young children know how to operate
the fire extinguisher. Drink Responsibly: Sunshine and water can increase the effects of alcohol. Breathing in the Shuswap air and relaxing on the top deck may be as intoxicating as a six-pack and is much safer. Always designate a driver to operate the boat in case of emergency. Generator Safety: Don’t use the generator while anchored or use it only for short periods of time. Some houseboats can trap generator fumes, causing drowsiness and, in extreme cases, suffocation. Keep your eyes and ears open: Always know where everyone is. No one should swim under the swim platform. Before turning on the boat to move, ensure no one is swimming around or at the back of the boat.

abulous Sle Sledding in the Eagle Valley, Sicamous, B British Columbia. There are four ma major riding areas including Owl Head, Blue Lake, Queest Mountain and the Eagle Pass. The Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club holds trail management agreements for these areas and is groomed by the Eagle Valley Snowmobile Grooming Society. The trails to the alpine areas are groomed after 75 sleds have been recorded using the trails. Other areas used mostly by “locals” exist but trails to these areas are ungroomed and ‘secret’ unless you venture and hang out with the club often. Variety is the best description for the four areas because there is something for everyone. Blue Lake is the most popular area. It accommodates family riders and those who like to explore the backcountry without really steep terrain.The bunny hill in front of the Blue Lake cabin is perfect for novice and young riders. For those who like to go vertical, a little poking around reveals some great climbing areas to conquer, get stuck or keep snowmobile dealers in the repair business. Blue Lake has a fabulous new cabin to have lunch or warm-up in, located in the wide open riding area. On a foggy day when the mist is thick on Owl Head or Queest, chances are Blue Lake will be clear enough to play in the area around the cabin or do a little

boon-docking in the trees. Queest is the oldest riding area. On a clear day it has one of the most spectacular views in British Columbia. Overall, the terrain is steeper and the area is smaller than Blue Lake, but like Blue Lake, there is something for all skill levels. Around the cabin there is space for trail riding, boon-docking and a little further north and east, some steeper terrain that requires a little more power. The trailhead for Queest is five minutes from downtown Sicamous and the ride to the A-frame cabin is well-worth the journey. Care is required on Queest when the weather is marginal as there are steep cliffs and overhangs in the area. Owl Head has it all. It is an excellent area for families and a great place for those who like to climb. The large area is ideal for people who enjoy exploring. You can even visit the neighbours to the south at Hunter’s Range or find your way to the north to Blue Lake. The area has a large lake for those who enjoy speed and one of the highest peaks in the North Okanagan, the Mara Mountain Lookout. The peak is easy to reach and the view - well come and have a look. The log cabin at Owl Head is a work of art and well worth the ride up. The trailhead for Owl Head is three minutes from downtown Sicamous.
