Tycrop reveals expansion plan for Rosedale Company hopes to consolidate work sites Robert Freeman Black Press Tycrop Manufacturing is getting ready to invest $30 million to clean up it’s “scattered” Rosedale facilities and turn it into one “modern” plant that will improve worker safety and present a more attractive face to the community. Tycrop co-owner Scott Mason said the plant has outgrown its current one-acre site, having doubled its output of equipment like high-pressure pumps for the energy sector over the last four years. He said the plant’s staff of 300 is also expected to double. Co-owner Gary Teichrob said all the plant activities that currently take place outside the buildings will move inside, one of the new buildings to be located on a nearby property in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Teichrob said no application has been made to the Agricultural Land Commission, but “at the end of the day there will be no loss of farm land” plus a “net benefit” to the agricultural community. Mason said the company is working with “a number of different people” in Chilliwack to meet those goals, but declined to identify them at this time. “There’s nothing concrete yet, there’s no firm decisions,” he said. Both men said that residents who are organizing opposition to the company’s intention to apply for exclusion of the farm property are jumping the gun. Teichrob said Rosedale was built around industry, the first being a blacksmith shop that serviced farmers. He said if the expansion plan proceeds, the community will benefit from a more attractive tree-lined plant, with employee parking off local roads and with a community walkway. Hang gliding pilot released from custody Robert Freeman The Progress Jon Orders, the hang-gliding pilot charged with obstruction of justice after a fatal tandem flight April 28, was released from custody Monday in Chilliwack. Orders, 50, was granted release by a provincial court judge Friday, but remained in custody over the weekend until he perfected $5,750 cash bail and surrendered passport and citizenship documents. Evidence submitted by Crown and defence lawyers at the bail hearing cannot be published by court order. Crown counsel opposed the release, but Judge Roy Dickey said the Crown had not convinced him their concerns were
strong enough to continue holding Orders. “I have determined that the risk can be dealt with in terms of the conditions of his release,” the judge said. In addition to turning in passports and citizenship documents, the conditions included no travel outside B.C., no operation of a hang-glider or paraglider, attend all court hearings in person, no contact with several witnesses and report regularly to a bail supervisor. Lenami Godinez-Avila, a 27-year-old from Mexico, fell to her death during a tandem hanggliding flight with Orders that took off from Mount Woodside just before noon April 28. Order’s lawyer Laird Cruickshank told The Progress after the Friday hearing that his client may want to comment down the road about the media coverage, but “I’m concerned about his emotional well-being; that’s been more the focus than what others are saying about him.” Meanwhile, Orders’ certification as a hang-glider instructor has been suspended by the Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada and an investigation launched. Investigations by the RCMP and the BC Coroners Office continue.
RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said a team of investigators is looking into the case, but she would not comment on possible further charges. “We’ll have to see where the evidence leads us,” she said. “The RCMP priority is exclusively to answer the questions we all have, particularly those of the family,” she said. “They have come to Canada in search of answers to provide some clarity regarding the death of their daughter.” Martin Henry, a master-rated pilot with over 30 years experience, is the lead investigator for the association, with assistance from Jason Warner, the association’s safety chair. G.W. Graham sports won’t be affected by job action Katie Bartel The Progress Warnings of discipline are not enough to stop G.W. Graham’s athletic director from continuing to provide sports programming outside of classroom hours. Jake Mouritzen has promised athletics will continue at G.W. Graham middle-secondary, regardless of the recent teacher vote to withdraw from extracurricular activities. “Graham Athletics will continue during this difficult time,” Mouritzen said in an email to The Progress. “We will support teacher-coach-
es that choose to coach in their spare time, and we will also support those teachers that choose to not participate in any extracurricular activities during this time.” That statement flies in the face of a warning, issued in last month’s Chilliwack Teachers’ Association newsletter, that teachers could face consequences if they “flagrantly defy” the will of the majority. Such consequences listed included the potential for an uncomfortable work environment long after the political struggle ends; a meeting with the CTA executive to provide a rationale for continuing services; and a hearing with the judicial council, where they could
“receive a sanction that is deemed appropriate by the council of their peers.” “We need to stand in solidarity,” the newsletter reads. But for Mouritzen, the students need to be supported more. “We appreciate this is a very difficult time for everyone, and at this time Graham athletics will support our current student athletes in the system,” he said. The school’s spring athletic program, which includes girls’ soccer, track and field and golf will go ahead as planned. However, they will look “drastically different” depending on the leadership in place.
“Moving forward – short term – we will bring in community support for those teams in need of coaches,” said Mouritzen. G.W. Graham’s football program will not be affected in any way as it has several community coaches involved. Chilliwack secondary is also going ahead with its track and field program with a teacher at the helm. But its girls soccer program was cancelled following the teacher vote. Chilliwack wasn’t the only teachers’ union to advise its members against continuing their volunteer work. Similar letters and or newsletters have been sent out across
the province. But it was a letter from the Burnaby Teachers’ Association that caught the ire of B.C. Education Minister George Abbott last week. The Burnaby letter directed its members to section 44.2 of the BCTF Members Guide, which allows for sanctions against members who act in opposition to collective action – which would include continuing their volunteer work. Heron reserve celebrates 10 years on Saturday Jennifer Feinberg The Progress It’s one of the top tourist attractions in Chilliwack, which may be a little-known fact for some. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve has seen a whopping 18,000 visitors come through the doors of the Rotary Interpretive Centre in the decade since it first opened. “But still it’s never crowded,” says Janet Hutchinson, programs and services coordinator at the GBHNR. “It is always peaceful when people are out walking the trails.” The undiked floodplain was transformed from a former military training site into prime wetland habitat in the years following the closure of CFB Chilliwack. “It’s been good for Chilliwack,” Hutchinson says. “Many visitors
have found us online and then decided to stop in when they’re in the area.” People come to the nature reserve from all over the world to marvel at the unique park, with a total of 168 active nests this spring. A volunteer counts the number of active heron nests every year. The chicks recently hatched and will go from chick size to full grown very quickly. “It’s like an airport around here with herons coming and going.” Nesting season begins in March and goes to mid July at the reserve on on Sumas Prairie Road. “But the site is about more than just herons,” Hutchinson says. “Although they are an incredible sight.” In fact there are several species at risk known to be in the area, from painted turtles, Salish suckers or Oregon forest snails, to other
creatures like otters and muskrats. There’s about 100 species of birds that drop in or make their home there. It’s in a vibrant nature corridor that allows these beautiful species to survive. There were only about 50 herons nests originally, when it was a “wet bridging” training site for military engineers. But they’ve thrived and the population has grown over the years. The site offers education and conservation projects, as well as an observation tower and bird blinds. Many locals don’t realize that the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society is a not-for-profit organization, she says. The nature reserve was created in 2002 as a City of Chilliwack park, for which the society is a partner through a management agreement. The Rotary Interpretive Centre
was presented to the city by the Rotary Club of Chilliwack in March 2002 and the official opening was held in May 2002. They’ll officially unveil a new tower trail at 1 p.m., along with offering a guided walk. A community art project will see 100 small canvases painted by fans of the nature reserve and will be put together later like a quilt. “It’s for people to express what they feel about the heron reserve, and we’re hoping it’s something we can keep to mark the occasion.” More details on the website at chilliwackblueheron.com. Info sessions on domestic violence in the community are starting this week hosted by local RCMP, featuring speakers from key agencies in Chilliwack. The idea is the brainchild of RCMP Cpl. Barb Vincent of the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment, who has run similar programs successfully in other communities. “I wanted to host a series that would introduce the different service providers in the community,” she said. “I thought we could be the conduit for those kind of discussions every week.” It can be difficult and confusing for individuals or families who have suffered violence at the hands of a spouse or loved one to seek out the help or resources they need from the varied agencies. Salmon inquiry weighs risk from habitat protection reform Jeff Nagel Black Press The Cohen Inquiry into the Fraser River’s troubled sockeye salmon stocks is shifting gears to consider last-minute arguments about controversial proposed reforms to the federal Fisheries Act. Participants at the inquir y have been given until May 14 to table their submissions on the impact of the changes that critics say will gut the law that protects fish habitat. “What commission counsel has done is said if something wasn’t in your final submissions that this new bill impacts, you’re welcome to make another
submission and we’ll look at those,” inquiry spokesperson Carla Shore said. The Conser vative government’s budget implementation bill includes the contentious amendments to the Fisheries Act. If passed, the clause protecting fish habitat by banning “harmful alteration, disruption and destruction” of fish habitat will be removed and replaced with one that outlaws “serious harm” to stocks fished by commercial, recreational or aboriginal users. Federal officials have described it as a more practical approach that focuses more on real threats to productive fisheries and less on blanket protection of
riparian ecosystems. No longer would authorization always be required to disrupt any fish habitat, for example, if the planned work doesn’t affect stocks used by any fisheries. Watershed Watch Salmon Society executive director Craig Orr, who chairs a coalition of conservation groups with standing at the inquir y, said he and other participants will definitely file their concerns. “It raises the threshold for what is considered to be serious harm to fish,” he said. “Without a doubt we all think this really does strike at the heart of what Cohen should be considering. It has huge implications to our ability to protect salmon.” Orr said he’s concerned the changes
could mean that penalties would only be triggered if fish are killed or there is permanent harm to habitat. The inquir y had already heard testimony that habitat protection laws aren’t well enough enforced as well as questions about the effectiveness of the no-net loss policy – now to be reviewed – that requires habitat lost to development be offset with improvements elsewhere. Justice Bruce Cohen wrapped up commission hearings in late December and had been preparing his findings on how to reverse a long-term decline of sockeye, although a recent extension now gives him until the end of September to deliver them. Ottawa say the changes won’t alter the ban on the dumping
of chemicals or other dangerous pollutants into any water way. Officials also say there are provisions to establish ecologically sensitive areas where higher levels of protection can be required. Fraser Valley farmers recently staged a demonstration in sup-
port of reforms, saying they are too restricted in their ability to clean ditches that have been colonized by fish. The NDP Opposition called the changes a sweeping and inappropriate narrowing of habitat protection. West Coast fisheries critic Finn Donnelly

If you’re like many Canadians, you spent much of last weekend hunched in front of your home computer, or over your kitchen table, surrounded by boxes and folders of paperwork and receipts. Last Monday at midnight was the deadline to file 2011 income tax returns. Not the best way to spend the last weekend of April. Even with the cool, cloudy weather. Although there will be a payoff, if you’re expecting a refund. About two-thirds of Canadians who file a return will get money back, on average about $1,500. Another 21 per cent will have already paid from deductions the exact amount of taxes they owe, and 12 per cent will have to pay more. And while it sometimes feels like the various levels of government are always dipping their fingers into our back pockets to extract ever more of our hard-earned dollars, Canadians aren’t as tax-burdened as we like to think. Total taxes, including income, sales, corporate, property and other taxes, account for 31 per cent of Canada’s economy. That’s almost three per cent less than the average for other industrialized countries that comprise the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In France, Finland, Austria, Norway, Belgium, Italy, Sweden and Denmark, taxes add up to 42 to 48 per cent of their economies. Sure, Americans pay less tax than Canadians, but we don’t have to pull out our credit cards every time we visit the doctor or get an X-ray at the hospital. The people of Greece, Portugal, Spain and Ireland also pay less tax, but given the financial crises crippling their economies, that’s unlikely to last. So as you await your refund, or the cheque you had to write to clear, consider it the price we pay for living in a stable, reliable country. ~ Black Press

What will the future hold for plant growth? Plants are proving to be much more sensitive to the nuances of climate change than scientists expected. In a major research project conducted at the University of California San Diego, scientists analyzed 50 plant studies that included 1,634 plant species on four continents. They found that shifts in how plants time their flowering and leafing because of warming temperatures seemed to be much greater than previously estimated by their own warming experiments. The results of the research were published last week in the journal Nature. The UCSD press release written by Kim McDonald stated that plant responses to climate change can have huge consequences for water supply, pollination, crop production and ecosystem health. The shifts in the timing of seasonal changes, something biolo-

gists call phenology, are among the most dependable and visible responses to a change in climate. “This suggests that predicted ecosystem changes, including continuing advances in the start of spring across much of the globe, may be far greater than current estimates based on data from experiments,” said Dr. Elizabeth Wolkovich who Margaret is a Postdoctoral EVANS Research Fellow at UBC’s Biodiversity Research Centre. She led an interdisciplinary team of scientists that conducted the study while she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego. There’s no doubt the seasons are changing and the warming trend, while persistent around
the globe, has local/regional variations. According to NASA, 2011 was the 9th warmest year on record since 1880 and nine of the ten warmest years in the modern meteorological record have occurred since 2000. But, for Chilliwack, 2011 was the coolest year since 1996 mainly due to the coldest February since 1994 and the coolest April to July period since 1964. The warming trend, though, is shifting back. From December to February, mean temperatures in Chilliwack were slightly above normal at 0.25oC above the 30-year average. According to Roger Pannett, volunteer weather observer for Environment Canada, last month was the warmest April since 2005. Mean temperatures were 0.99oC above normal. And weather patterns are likely to shift again now that the cooltrend La Nina cycle is over and Pacific Ocean currents are in a
neutral pattern. The biologists in San Diego created new global databases of plants’ sensitivity to temperature and how much they shift their timing of leafing and flowering with the shift in warming. Their calculations were done from experiments and then compared to longterm monitoring records. But they found that their experiments under-predicted how quickly plants responded to temperature by at least four times compared to long-term records. Historical records consistently showed that, on average, leafing and flowering advances five to six days per one degree Celsius and it seemed to be consistent across all species of plants and data records. “These findings have extensive consequences for predictions of species diversity, ecosystem services and global models of future change,” said Elsa Cleland, an

The research opens up many questions on the future health of food chains and ecosystems. Will the growth and flowering of plants responding to a warming world be a lot faster than current models might estimate? How will that affect pollination, the health of habitats, and crop growth at a time when we are already worried about the need to increase food production for the world’s rapidly expanding population?

The annual event, which raises money and awareness for the Chilliwack Hospice Society, featured a two-kilometre or five-kilometre hike through Chilliwack. Last year’s event raised more than $16,000 for the Hospice Society, which provides comfort care to meet the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of dying people and their families. Two sides to environment story Re: Environmentalism for dummies (B.C. Views, April 17). Tom Fletcher writes: “Diseased fish were displayed, but natural contamination of the Athabasca River was glossed over.” Fletcher is pushing an argument that was proven wrong in 2010. Several years ago, people downstream from the oil-sands plants complained of diseased fish. They also complained of increased cancer rates. People were dying from rare forms of cancer! They blamed both items on pollutants that were put into in the Athabasca River by
the oil-sands plants. The oil companies claimed that the pollutants in the river were naturally occurring. The governments of Canada and Alberta supported the companies. In 2010, a study by David Schindler and others proved that the pollution is indeed caused by the oil-sands industry. At first both governments denied it. But the study was well-funded, well done and produced results that could stand up in court. Both governments conceded that Schindler was correct!

To the emergency ward staff of the Chilliwack Gen. Hospital, a heartfelt thank you, from myself and my wife. The service received from the moment she was admitted on April 26, with what turned out to be a heart attack, right through to discharge was amazing. The care, compassion and concern shown by the nurses, doctors and paramedics was above and beyond the call. Special thanks to nurses, Rose, Shannon, and Mike, to name a few. And to Dr. Jennifer Wilson. My wife is home now and well on the road to recovery. Thank You, Thank You.
We wish to thank everyone who attended the Seniors’ Bursary Banquet on May 2 at the Chilliwack Senior Secondary School. A total of 191 tickets were sold for the event. Teaching Chef Terry McDougall, Chef Sharon Touchet, Judith Booker, their co-workers as well as the culinary arts students did an excellent job of preparing and serving us a delicious meal with all the trimmings. We seniors feel very fortunate to be able to attended these banquets twice a year in May and December. Proceeds allocated to bursaries. We once again say thanks for a great evening.

Why was it necessary for private groups to fund that study? Are our governments not responsible for protecting us from pollutants that cause cancer? Are they not required to protect places such as the Peace Athabasca Delta, and other natural wonders down-stream from the oil-sands? Why were they so quick to side with the companies, when no such study had been done? What have they done to alleviate the situation?

tunity to help someone hungry in Chilliwack. On May 9, volunteers will fan out across the city, knocking on doors and accepting donations for the Salvation Army’s “Give it up for Hunger” food drive. The drive is part of the nationwide Hunger Awareness Week, aimed at restocking food banks across Canada. Every month those food banks aid nearly 900,000 people – among those, 38 per cent are children and youths. Chilliwack is no exception. According to the Salvation Army, last year the local food bank distributed over 7,000 hampers to families in need. It also registered more than 30,000 visits to its “daily staples and produce line.” The Salvation Army soup kitchen, meanwhile, averaged over 30,000 clients during the past five years. “It is not just the
homeless that access our services,” the Sally Ann says, “but young families, single mothers, senior citizens, working families and all those that are financially challenged.” Volunteers will be in neighbourhoods between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Residents are asked to have some non-perishable food items standing by to hand off to the volunteers. The teams will then return to the Salvation Army were the food will be packed, stored and redistributed to those in need. If you are not home, or your house is missed, you can still help. Margit Nance, association executive director, told The Progress last week that “there is total gloom in our flying community.� “It’s just so tragic,� she said. “To say there is deep shock is an understatement.� Nance said this is the first such fatal incident in Canada “and must never happen again.� “One is too many, as far as I’m concerned,� she said. Rick Hansen’s journey brings him to Chilliwack

Celebration marks 25th anniversary of Man In Motion tour Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Rick Hansen is expected to arrive in Chilliwack late Sunday afternoon to mark the quarter-centur y that has passed since his ground-breaking Man in Motion World Tour by wheelchair. This time around, he has 7,000 people completing the route. The 25th Anniversary Relay has been retracing the Canadian segment of the original Man in Motion World Tour, travelling to 600 communities in a bid to make the world more accessible and inclusive. Chilliwack was also chosen to host an End of Day Celebration on May 13, a free community event marking the Relay at Heritage Park. Hansen will arrive on-site with medal bearer Betty Colk some
time after four p.m./ Colk was nominated by Chilliwack officials to have the honour of passing the medal on to another participant who has made a difference in their community. Colk is a local athlete with the Special Olympics who works at the Community Policing Office, and she is one of 7,000 Relay participants, who will be walking, wheeling or running a leg of the 12,000 km of the route across Canada from Newfoundland to B.C. Earlier that day participants in Agassiz, Harrison, Rosedale, and Chilliwack passed the commemorative medal on to others like themselves along the Relay route. The Rick Hansen Medal was designed by the Royal Canadian Mint and is made of sterling silver.
Hansen will be on hand to sign autographs after the celebration at Heritage Park comes to a close at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, said officials. The Relay continues without Hansen, on Monday, May 14 at 8:28 am, via horse and buggy from Heritage Park, escorting the

A Fraser Valley transport trailer stolen four years ago has been recovered in the North Okanagan. A police officer working in the Armstrong area April 20 pulled over a pickup truck pulling a trailer after noticing the 15-foot, 2007 cargo trailer did not have a vehicle identification number. While the driver stated he had borrowed the trailer, the officer continued with his investigation. “It was confirmed stolen out of Abbotsford in 2008,� said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson. “The officer is working with ICBC on possible charges.� A Chilliwack man was arrested. The trailer was valued at $8,000 in 2008 and ICBC compensated the owner for the theft at the time. “The trailer was paid off so ICBC owns it,� said Molendyk. Molendyk says it’s possible the trailer has changed hands several times since going missing. “Individuals have a habit of steeling trailers, removing the decals and putting them back on the road as a U-built,� he said.

Running to help a thirsty world A Chilliwack mom is spending quality time jogging along the Vedder River with her young son, hoping to build awareness around the limited water supply of the world. Cara Abrahams, a new resident of Chilliwack, has committed to running the 10 km Run for Water event being held in Abbotsford on May 27. She’s not just running the course, though, she’s also raising money for water projects in southern Ethiopia. Run for Water is an annual event that partners
with Hope International Development Agency, a Canadian-based, non-profit, international development agency committed to helping the world’s poorest families work their way out of poverty. This year’s run will be supporting a water project in the Bonke District of Koshale, and will consist of 18 km worth of pipeline, with seven water points and four cattle troughs. Once completed, it will take an average of just three minutes to fetch water. Quite an improvement

Many of the community’s women and children are forced to walk three-to-five hours a day to retrieve buckets of water from a contaminated source – resulting in waterborne diseases, death, and poor education. “It just hit me how our lives here in North America have a lot of water in them – like all people need – but it’s all clean water and hardly thought of,” said Abrahams.
“We wash ourselves, our dishes, our clothes with water. We run it until it’s cool, heat it in the dishwasher to sanitize our dishes, and use it to pressure wash buildings. “But in this region in Ethiopia, water is the focus of the day and dictates the day’s activities.” While Abrahams has been a casual runner for years, she’s only recently discovered the endorphins of racing. Run for Water will be her first 10 km run. “I’m excited about being

Community ‘It Takes a Village’ to raise funds Black Press For the first time ever, Relay for Life participants will be able to watch the sun set, and rise again, over the beautiful waters of Harrison Lake. The lagoon is being used for a Relay for Life event, beginning Saturday, June 2 at 7 p.m. and ending at 7 a.m. Sunday morning. All proceeds from the event go toward the Canadian Cancer Society who says “the funds raised through Relay For Life help the Canadian Cancer Society fund promising research, provide information and support ser vices for people living with cancer and advocate for public policies that reduce cancer risk and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease.” Starting up a team for the event is as easy as clicking a button online. One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative Whenever there is a need, the Lions Clubs work together to help ¿nd a solution. They helped the Àood survivors, the victims of the tsunami disasters, the earthquake casualties and others. They have helped restore sight to millions, supplied hearing aids to the hard of hearing and even rebuilt whole villages. If there is a need we are there! And... There is a need where measles are concerned. One shot, one life: Lions Measles Initiative is aimed at providing help to 157 million children worldwide. Routine vaccinations have helped prevent measles in Canada as well as other developed countries. However, this is not the case in developing countries where we average 415 deaths in children daily due to measles. As well, measles is a major cause of childhood blindness. Yet $1 will vaccinate a child for life. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has joined forces with the Lions International to raise US$15 million for this campaign. The Gates Foundation will match $1 for every $2 raised by the Lions to a maximum total of $15 million. In other words, if Lions International raises $10 million dollars, the Gates Foundation will contribute another $5 million. Last year, Lions, with the help of Bill Gates Foundation, vaccinated over 41 million children. This year we are aiming even higher. Unicef predicts that without further help 1.7 million children will die in the next 3 years from this preventable disease. The Mount Cheam Lions will be working towards making a difference. Watch for more on this initiative. Don’t let garden insects destroy the fruits of your labor Gardeners are familiar with the joy of planting and nurturing flowers, fruits and vegetables to maturity and the bliss of harvesting nature’s bounty. One of the few things that can make that bliss turn into annoyance is an infestation of bugs. While many insects are beneficial to the garden, others can be very destructive. Arm yourself with the facts for handling insects in your garden this growing season. Beneficial pollinator bugs like bees may be welcomed guests, but their destructive cousins can have devastating effects on even the healthiest garden. There is nothing worse than having a cucumber vine wither just before harvesting the first crop, or picking a breath-taking rose just to find it covered with aphids. Aphids, mealy bugs, mites, thrips, slugs, snails and cutworms are some of the most problematic garden insects across the country. Keep these and other pesky insects from “bugging” you and destroying your garden this summer. Know the enemy: Having the ability to identify problem insects in the garden is a big step toward overcoming them. Proper bug identification is key to protecting your plants and veggies. Also check your plants for symptoms to help identify the visitors to your garden. Is something eating seedlings at night? Maybe you have cutworms. Are plants’ leaves looking like lace? Sounds like Japanese beetles. Look around and see what is there. Finding an effective treatment is easy once you know what you are actually dealing with. Plant wisely: Sometimes the simplest bug prevention is using a few smart tips when planting or caring for a garden. Remember to clean up all plant debris at the end of the growing season to discourage insects from wintering over in the veggie patch. Another easy tip is to consider planting flowers

among fruits and vegetables. Flowers look great and will attract beneficial bugs that pollinate, like bees, but will also attract bugs that will eat pests, like ladybugs. Rotating crops can also prevent recurring insect problems. This will discourage last year’s insects that may have wintered over from sticking around because the crop they found so delicious is no longer present. Seek advice: Do not be afraid to ask for help. Local gardeners and extension agents make great resources. Ask around and see what others have used that worked. Your grandma may have used cans to keep cutworms from eating the seedlings in her garden. Simply cut both ends off of some cans and place them around seedlings when transplanting to create a protective barrier from cutworms, slugs and snails while plants are getting established. If your neighbor has had success using rowcovers placed on crops that are targeted by certain local pests, then that may also work for you. Just be sure to leave the covers off for part of the day to allow for pollination. Fight back: When nothing else seems to be working, take serious action by finding the appropriate pest control for your garden and your situation. Home remedies, organic solutions or more conventional means of insect controls in the flower or vegetable garden are all options available. There is no shortage of pest control products at your local garden centre or department store. There are solutions for everything from insects to slugs, so don’t be afraid to ask for assistance to get precisely what you require. Once you are armed with all the right product and information, get out there and defend your garden, lawn and home from invasive insects.

Strongman stars Louis Retief, Carson Allinot and Michael Robinson finished 1-2-3 in the men’s heavyweight division at the Sardis Strongman competition, held last week at Sardis secondary school. Over five days, students in five divisions tested their physical strength in five events; the heavy sled pull, sandbag shuttle, tire flip, sled push and gruelling farmer’s carry. Retief and Allinot actually tied for first place with 33 points apiece, but Retief took top spot with a win in the tie-break tug o’ war. Eight competed in the division. Raphael Olivares was fourth, Ryan Bonner fifth, Brendan Rausenberg sixth, Perry Ross seventh and Luke Majercsak eighth. In the men’s middleweight division, Ben Zalot finished first with 43 points followed by Callum Roy with 40. Brad Fitzsimmons and Ben Kipper tied for third with 37 points apiece. Ten competed in the division. The men’s lightweight title went to Jared Galmut with 53
points, one better than runnerup Karl Krahn. Daren MacLeod placed third at 49 points, one better than fourth place finisher Rob Balazs. Thirteen competed in the division. The men’s flyweight division went to a tie-break, with Clint Mandrell (60 points) taking the tug o’ war contest over Connor Lovely. Rudy Langstaff was third with 54 points. Fourteen competed in the division. An impressive group of nine competed in the women’s division, with Robyn Kempers coming out on top. Kempers produced 44 points to edge Ellie Heuser’s 37. Sarah Muxlow and Tori Kuhn (30 points apiece) settled third with a tug o’ war, won by Muxlow. Shanna Fortnum was fifth followed by Noelle Young sixth, Andrea Almhjell seventh, Jessie Muxlow eighth and Maddie Tetz ninth.

Optimism abundant as Huskers spring camp starts Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Tyson St. James will stroll the sidelines at Townsend Park this weekend for the first time as the head coach of the Chilliwack Huskers. Hired at the end of January, the former Canadian Football League lineman and linebacker has spent the last three months making up for lost time. Given a shortened offseason, St. James hit the phones and roads hard, leaving no stone unturned in his search for junior football talent.
At this weekend’s spring camp, St. James will put faces to the names and see exactly what he’s got to work with. “We’ve been really busy recruiting, and our goal was to have 100 players at spring camp,” he acknowledged. “The reality is when you shoot for 100 you might get 80, but we’ve had most of the players confirm through registration and I’m excited about getting on the field and doing something instead of just talking all the time. ” Taking over a BC Football Conference team coming off back-to-back 0-10 seasons created some recruiting issues for St. James, who had to sell prospects on the upside of the Huskers program. The coach had some candid conversations as he
tried to get players to commit. “It’s one of those situations where you have one conversation where it’s good, then it changes and then it’s good again,” he chuckled. “There’s a lot of water under the bridge from the last five years. What I try to do is provide hope, and once you provide hope it really seems to help.” St. James found many recruits open to the idea that it’s a new era, and the Huskers may not be stuck in 0-10 purgatory forever. “A heard a lot of good things from guys who feel this is something they can help build,” St. James said. “I want these guys to be where they’ll feel comfortable building themselves as people and players, instead
of just plugging in and playing football games. A lot of the conversations were very positive that way.” St. James has players coming from here, there and everywhere. The burgeoning football factory of Prince George continues to send players south. The coach is expecting players from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and he hopes to see a large group of local players as well. The Huskers made a big splash last spring when they got commitments from several graduating Chilliwack midget football Giants. In years past, those players flocked out of town, choosing the Nanaimo Raiders or Langley Rams over their own backyard.
When players like Cody Parray, Dylan Boykowich and Cole Herrmann not only signed with the Huskers but made sizeable impacts in their rookie seasons, it was a sign the local pipeline may be re-opened. “I wouldn’t say we’re completely there yet, because we still have to prove there’s something different and exciting going on here,” St. James noted. “This team came into existence to give those guys an opportunity to play high level football beyond midget. My job is to get these players excited about staying and playing for the Huskers.” The Huskers will be on the field Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. They’ll be back for a second practice from 2 to 4 p.m.
and Sunday practice times are 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. St. James said no one will make the team out of spring camp, but first impressions can carry through to main camp in the summer. “Spring camp is an opportunity for the players to showcase their athleticism and for the coaches to see if they make sense for junior football,” St. James said. “We’ll be doing a lot of teaching and evaluation drills. We’ll see how they handle themselves on the football field and how they handle themselves off the field. Bantam AA Cougars undefeated at Okanagan Spring Classic Chilliwack managed to chip out a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the 5th, where the team added three more
runs that sealed the 5-0 championship game win. The Bantam AA Cougars will be busy
this week in league play as they play Tuesday in White Rock, Thursday at Fairfield Park against Newton. Next week-

Chilliwack’s Bantam AA Cougars returned from Kelowna this past weekend with an unblemished record in the Okanagan Spring Classic. The tournament featured eight Bantam AA teams – seven from around B.C. and a squad from Sherwood Park, Alberta. Chilliwack started round robin play in the tournament by trouncing Victoria 13-2 in the opening game on Friday night. The next morning saw the Cougars up early for an 8 a.m. Saturday start against home town Kelowna, where the Cougars put together a second convincing 14-1 win. The Cougars had the day to await a 5:30 p.m. showdown with the Vernon Canadians where once again Chilliwack’s pitching stymied the opposition hitters resulting in a 13-0 win to remain undefeated and take top seed in Pool B into Sunday’s crossover games where they would face the second Kelowna team in a sudden death semi final at 8 a.m. Once again the Cougar pitchers controlled the game by keeping the Kelowna Reds off the score sheet. The game started out as a pitcher’s dual until the Chilliwack hit the sticks in the bottom of the 4th inning, blasting the game open with five runs. They never looked back, winning the game 6-0 and moving on to the finals against a determined Victoria team that had knocked off Ridge Meadow Royals in the other semi final. Chilliwack knew the final against Victoria was not going to be easy as both teams brought out their aces to try to win the title.

Hendrik Jan Buit passed away on May 3, 2012 at Chilliwack, BC at age 81 years. He was BUIT born July 18, 1930 at Ommen, the Netherlands. Henry is survived by Gertrude, his wife of 59 years; children, Dick (Kathy), Henrietta (Aurel), Marilyn (James) and Lucy (Calvin); 20 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sons, baby Buit and Jacob Ralph Buit. Visitation was held on Monday, May 7, 2012. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday May 8, 2012 at 2:00 pm, from the Chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home 45901 Victoria Ave. Interment was held at Chilliwack Cemetery on Little Mountain. Pall Bearers were Gord Huebert, Gerald Gelderman, Gord Gelderman, Danny Liewen, David Gelderman and Mark Oostenberg.
Aug. 15, 1974 - Apr. 15, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic death of Darcy Garnot. He is survived GARNOT by his creators Larry Sr. and Darlene; his sister Tracy and his brother Larry Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews and of course his beloved children Kaydyn and Kyneesha. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and his grandma Dorothy Garnot. At his side that day was his loving girlfriend Stacy who will forever remain steadfastly by his side. Darcy was a man devoted to his family and friends. He was a man of courage and strength, with a great sense of humour. The measure of a man is what he does with power. Real power is the ability to love and help others with out the need of want or reward. Darcy was the meaning of selfless character, passion and love. Thank you Darcy for all the “Good Times”.
