A B.C. Supreme Court judge has sentenced Jarrod Bacon of Abbotsford to 12 years in prison for conspiracy to traffic cocaine, saying he is “committed to a criminal lifestyle” and has shown no remorse for his actions. Bacon, 29, declined to comment when asked by Justice Austin Cullen at the beginning of Friday morning’s proceedings in Vancouver whether he had anything to say, and shook his head at the ruling but showed no further reaction. Taking into account double credit for the two years and five months Bacon has already served, his remaining jail time amounts to seven years and two months. Crown counsel had recommended a term of 21 years, while defence had said eight years would be more appropriate. Cullen denied Crown’s request that Bacon serve half his sentence before being eligible for parole, meaning he can apply for parole after having served one-third of his time. Van Dongen seeks intervener status Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen filed an application in B.C. Supreme Court yesterday, seeking intervener status in the auditor general’s lawsuit against the B.C. government. In that lawsuit, auditor general John Doyle is seeking a court order entitling him to see all documents related to the $6 million in legal fees the province picked up in the case against Dave Basi and Bobby Virk. The pair pleaded guilty in October 2010 to providing insider information in the 2003 $1 billion sale of BC Rail, and to receiving benefits for the information. The auditor general is also seeking all documents related to other cases where government employees have had their legal fees paid.

A key issue in the lawsuit is whether claims of confidentiality or lawyer-client privilege prevent the auditor general from obtaining access to certain documents and information. If van Dongen is granted intervener status, he will be able to make oral and written submissions in the auditor general’s lawsuit. In his notice of application, van Dongen said he is seeking such status because he can “provide insight and analysis” on some of the issues raised in the lawsuit, due to his “extensive experience” as an MLA and former government minister. The court documents state that van Dongen has been seeking answers from the government since he first

learned that the legal fees had been waived for Basi and Virk. “The applicant was deeply troubled by the government’s decision to ignore calls for a public inquiry into the BasiVirk legal fees indemnity waivers,” the documents state. In a prepared statement issued after he filed the notice, van Dongen said full disclosure by the government is crucial. “If the auditor general were not able to conduct a thorough performance audit of the disbursement and receipt of taxpayer money, and to report without restriction on that audit to the Legislature, the efficacy of his office would be severely impaired, to the detriment of our democracy.” Van Dongen’s motion will be heard June 1.

Teaching in Antigua Teaching life skills through physical and health education is the goal for a group of UFV students in Antigua for the month of May. The 18 students are on the Caribbean island for four weeks for a project titled Champions for Health Promoting Schools. Consisting of mostly kinesiology and physical education students, the group is being led by kinesiology instructor Joanna Sheppard, who will be accompanied by a research assistant and teaching assistant. From April 27 to May 26, they are teaching in classrooms across the island. They’ll also be working with students outdoors, doing sporting activities that will incorporate important life skills with each lesson. On the island, students will be divided into pairs between six schools, where they will teach for the trip’s entirety. At the schools, they’ll be teaching four, 45-minute lessons a day. An important aspect of the experience is ensuring UFV is taking the proper supplies. “For the program to be sustainable, we need to bring all of our own resources because we don’t want to be a burden on their resources in Antigua,” said Sheppard. UFV students brought chalk, paper, pens, crayons, and stickers for the classroom. The materials will be used for the day-to-day teaching. In the classroom, they’ll be touching on numerous topics, such as health education, critical thinking, and goal-setting. “Not only are we getting them physically active, but we’re also doing cognitively effective activities to help them make good life choices,” said Sheppard. On the sporting side, the students are packing soccer balls and basketballs, as those are the biggest sports on the island. They’re also introducing volleyball, thanks to a donation of balls and a net from the UFV athletics department. While the program is helping teach important skills to the students in Antigua, it’s also extremely beneficial to the UFV group. Teen victim beaten and stabbed Four Abbotsford men have been charged in relation to the brutal assault and stabbing of an 18-year-old man on the night of the Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver. The men are among those included in the latest round of charges recommended by the Vancouver Police Department in relation to the riot on June 15, 2011. All four face charges of assault and participating in a riot and assault. One of the men faces a more serious charge of assault causing bodily harm, and another faces additional charges of carrying a concealed weapon and assault with a weapon. Police say that shortly after the final Canucks playoff game let out, the victim from Abbotsford was approached in the 500 block of West Georgia Street by a group of men aged 18 to 19. It is alleged that one of the men began assaulting the teen, and the other three quickly joined in.

The victim was knocked to the ground, pepper-sprayed, kicked and punched. Then, one of the assailants allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed him multiple times in the face and body. Police say quick response by Good Samaritans, police and emergency personnel ensured the victim was quickly taken to hospital. He has since recovered from his injuries. One of the four assailants has a criminal record, according to police. The others have had several past police contacts. The VPD announced Friday that it has recommended a further 83 criminal charges against 25 more people who took part in the riot, reaching a total of 200 people facing 592 charges. Seven of them are from Abbotsford. To date, Crown has approved 226 criminal charges against 85 suspected rioters, and seven have pleaded guilty.

Police cruiser damaged A 55-year-old man who slammed a chunk of wood against an Abbotsford Police car Sunday night is now facing charges of mischief, uttering threats and assault. Const. Ian MacDonald said the incident took place at about 5:20 p.m. in the 2400 block of Center Street after police received a call from a woman who said a rock had been thrown through her window. She saw the culprit walking away and provided a description, includ-

ing that he was carrying a piece of wood that was about four feet long and two feet in diameter. When an officer who arrived on the scene tried to get the man to put down the piece of wood, he instead waved it at the officer and then slammed it against a patrol car. The front of the vehicle was damaged and a headlight broken. The man was arrested after he either threw the wood or it slipped out of his hands, MacDonald said.

The mom of a murdered man shares her sonâ€™s story in a documentary being released next week by the Abbotsford Police. The production, called â€œOperation Lodestar: Parenting Matters,â€? will be featured at a free public screening on Wednesday, May 16 at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium (MCA). Const. The Conservatives have now been in power for close to six and one-half years. The first five and one-half were as a minority government, and that taught Harper and his MPs some valuable lessons. One of the most important is to keep the rhetoric to a minimum and concentrate on getting the job done. It is always better to outperform what is expected, rather than trumpet loudly about what you hope to do, and then not achieve it.

Harper recently put a toe across the line by claiming that a former NDP leader had opposed the Second World War. While he was correct that CCF leader J.S. Woodsworth opposed the war in 1939 (and immediately lost his post as leader), the NDP itself was not formed out of the CCF until 1961 – 22 years later. Politicians are far better to keep expectations low and make comments that are non-provocative, and deliver more than the public expects. One way to do so is to avoid rhetoric and concentrate on the job at hand. For the most part, the Conservatives have done that. The deﬁcit is steadily getting lower, there is some effort to reduce the size of government, taxes are not being raised and Canada continues to be in a stronger economic position thant most countries. A steady and careful approach to government is the best way to continue to achieve results. – Black Press

Other Hand There are occasions, I must confess, when on sunny spring mornings I forgo a shower in order to be outside doing yard work prior to the crack of 10 a.m. In fact there have been entire weekends in which full body ablutions have been neglected for the sake of expedience. Anyone who ﬁnds that lack of cleanliness abhorrent obviously has never been camping, at least not in the wilderness where the ‘bathroom’ consists of nothing more than a secluded mossy log and a splash in the face from a nearby creek. Maybe it’s the scent of the pine forest that masks it, but only on very extended backcountry stays have I found my companions, or embarrassingly myself, to be somewhat odiferous. That scenario usually results in mutual agreement

that it is time to stand in said freezing cold creek and do a full body wash. At home, of course, circumstances allow for a hot shower with all the necessities of perfumery. So it was recently that I entered the curved glass enclosure that graces a corner of “my” bathroom, a shower I might add that once used requires more cleaning to make it pristine than I engage on my own body parts. Once the grime of a weekend of digging, weed-eating and other garden chores was removed I rolled open one of the shower doors, only to have it fall off its tracks. A heavy wet door, quickly gripped in equally damp hands in a very enclosed space to prevent it from shattering across the bathroom made for some interesting gyrations, particularly when one is naked. Safely propped in a corner, and then dried and dressed, I took a look at what went wrong. One of the little wheeled carriages that support the unit in its track had parted company with the door.

Attending the big box store from which it was purchased for a replacement part, I was emphatically informed that “we don’t carry parts . . . you have to contact the manufacturer.” Great, I thought, I have no idea who made the shower, since the paper

to arrive. The next morning I’m on the phone to somewhere in the eastern U.S., who referred me to their Canadian division by provision of yet another 800 number. I’d been through this before, ordering a defective barbecue part from Texas that took 10 weeks to arrive. Visions of spray cans of deodorant accompanying my every move for most of the summer, I connected with the Montreal ofﬁce of my shower manufacturer. So it was music to my ears, and a potential blessing to those who might have come in close proximity to me in the ensuing days, that the cheerful person at the other end of the phone said “not a problem, I’ll send you a complete set of new parts . . . they should be there within three to ﬁve days.” We had a good laugh over my perceived predicament (actually there are other showers in the house), and she even called me “Sweetie” at the end of the conversation.

An Abbotsford teen has been selected as one of 20 finalists in an international model search competition. Julia Duckett, 15, was chosen from among 500 young women to take part in the eighth annual ITM (International Top Model) Search on June 7 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond. The winner receives

$10,000 in prizes, including an all-expenses-paid trip to China to represent ITM and North America in the New Silk Road Model Look contest. The River Rock competition has previously been won by two Abbotsford teens – Jillian Halldorson in 2009 and Meagan Klop in 2011. Both were 17 years old at the time.

Open house celebrates 90 years of news The Abbotsford News turns 90 this year and will be celebrating nine decades of keeping people informed by holding an open house on May 26. Krys Kolanos, the Heat’s leading scorer during the regular season, was unstoppable during Abbotsford’s first-round series with the Milwaukee Admirals. The veteran forward racked up eight points (four goals, four assists) to lead the Heat to the first series sweep in franchise history. “Krys is a money player,” Heat head coach Troy Ward analyzed. “He always wants to be on the ice when the game’s on the line . . . He feels like he can change the outcome of the game. “The big thing about Krys versus a lot of guys at this level is, you’ll find a lot of guys aren’t really sure they want to be out there when things are kind of hairy. But Krys always wants to be out there.” The second round has been tougher sledding for Kolanos, as the Toronto Marlies have limited him to just one assist over the first three games.

Journeyman goalie Danny Taylor (pictured above) has suited up for 12 different teams since turning pro in 2006, but he’s found a home in Abbotsford. With Leland Irving, the Heat’s 2010-11 MVP, spending much of the campaign up with the Calgary Flames, Taylor stepped in and performed admirably. And with Irving unavailable at the end of the regular season due to the birth of his ﬁrst child, Taylor sparked the team on a winning streak that netted the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. When the playoffs began, it was Taylor who got the nod, and he came through with ﬂying colours, backstopping the Heat to four straight wins. Taylor stumbled in Game 2 of the second round against Toronto, allowing four goals, prompting Ward to give Irving a shot in Game 3. But the 26-year-old goalie has made a strong case for a contract next season.

Max Reinhart joined the Heat at the tail end of the regular season, after his junior campaign with the WHL’s Kootenay Ice wrapped up, and he wasted little time making an impact. The 20-year-old centre made his pro debut in the regular-season finale against the Marlies, and scored two goals. He was a healthy scratch early in the playoffs, but distinguished himself in Game 1 of the second round against Toronto. Reinhart led the Heat to a 3-1 victory, notching a goal and an assist to go with a team-high five shots on net and a +2 rating. “The one thing about Max is, he finds himself to always be in positions to make an impact on the game,” Ward said. “We’ve seen him now, in a short amount of time, score some goals at this level, and that’s not by coincidence. That has to do with his hockey intelligence.”

Troy Ward’s impressive work in his first season at the helm of the Heat has earned him significant buzz as a candidate for NHL head-coaching openings. The Calgary Flames, the Heat’s NHL parent club, are among those in search of a new bench boss after parting ways with Brent Sutter. General manager Jay Feaster has lavished praise on Ward for his work in Abbotsford, and confirmed he’ll be considered for the vacancy. Ward led the Heat to a franchise-record 42 victories during the regular season – all the more noteworthy considering the AHL trimmed its schedule from 80 to 76 games this year. Abbotsford’s 11-game winning streak running from the end of the regular season into the playoffs was also a team record, and it’s clear the Heat have taken on the character of their even-keel, process-oriented head coach.

Q The playoffs are a productive period for player development, and I imagine it's also a growth opportunity for coaches. How do you learn and grow at this time of year?

Abbotsford-bor n goalie Nathan Lieuwen celebrated a major milestone in his hockey career on Saturday, when he signed his first NHL contract with the Buffalo Sabres. “It’s exciting to be able to move on to the pro ranks,” said Lieuwen, who inked a three-year, two-way pact with the Sabres which will likely see him start his career with one of Buffalo’s minor-pro affiliates – the Rochester Americans (AHL) or the Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL). “To become a professional athlete is obviously something every kid dreams of, and to be starting that journey now is pretty exciting.” Lieuwen, age 20, is closing the book on a fascinating junior hockey career with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League. His early tenure with the Ice was marred by multiple concussions that affected him for the better part of three seasons, and he was passed over twice in the NHL draft. He finally shook the symptoms prior to the 2010-11 campaign, and staged a breakout, earning WHL playoff MVP honours after leading the Ice to a league title and a third-place finish at the Memorial Cup. The Sabres took notice, picking him in the sixth round (167th overall) of the entry draft last June. After Lieuwen fashioned another stellar season in 2011-12 (27-20-8 record, 2.50 goals against average, .914 save percentage), Buffalo deemed him worthy of a contract. Lieuwen expects the transition to pro hockey will be a challenge, but he’s not daunted by it. “Of course I understand it’s going to be a step up – better players and better

shooters and everything,” he said. “But you also get to play with better players. “My kind of mentality is, you’re always

learning. The learning curve my change every once in a while, but you’re still learning and going in the same direction.”

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landfills every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore. BCUOMA is a non-for-profit organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers. Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.

Protecting our province from the harmful effects of used oil and antifreeze must be a responsibility we all share, together. So please, next time you look to dispose of used oil or antifreeze materials, find a collection facility near you. Here are three easy ways to do so:

DEPLISSEY, Percy Judson, UE Percy was born on March 4, 1916. He passed away peacefully on May 3, 2012 at MSA Manor, Abbotsford. Percy was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean on August 3, 1999; 3 sisters, Marguerite, Mary & Belle; and 2 brothers, Alfred & Carey. He is survived by daughters, Moray & JessieMarie, and several nieces and nephews. Percy loved teaching and golf at Ledgeview. He was a faithful Canuck fan and was one of the first season ticket holders. There will be no service by request. She had a love of gardening, spent a number of years singing in a choir, but her greatest love was looking after her grandchildren. She enjoyed making their favorite foods and playing all sorts of games. She is predeceased by her husband Anton, mother and father, Susanna and Matthias Seidl, sisters Maria and Josephine and her brothers, Matthias and Hans. She is survived by her brother, Josef (Trude), her children, Melitta (Greg), Susanna, Toni (Peter) and Robert (Rhonda); her grandchildren, Christine, Gregory (daughter Zayla), Andrew, Trent and Brianne; her step grandchildren, Sonia (Darrell), Fred (Diane), Paul (Renya) and Victoria (Daniel); many step great grandchildren and step great great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. A Mass will be held at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Avenue, Abbotsford, on Thursday, May 10, 2012. Jake was a farmer most of his life. He had a dairy farm, a raspberry farm and then a grain farm in the Peace River area, but lived most of his life in Abbotsford. People called him ‘J.R.’ Family was everything to him. A Funeral Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 11:00 am from the Rosedale Memorial Chapel, 13205 Rosedale Ave. in Summerland, BC with Pastor Rick Gay officiating. Alcide (Al) Moreau passed peacefully April 27, 2012 in Abbotsford Hospital. He leaves behind his loving wife Grace, daughter Danielle (Joe), son Michael (Joanna) and 6 grandchildren. He also leaves behind 4 sisters and 3 brothers and many nieces and nephews in Canada and U.S.A. and many wonderful friends. Al was born in a small village in Somerset, Manitoba. He came from a family of 13 children. He loved learning new languages (Cantonese was among them), helping people, loved nature, and playing the piano which his mother taught him at age 9, which he played until a month before he passed away. A special thank you to Dr. Dueck, Dr. Constantine also nurses and care aids at Abbotsford Hospital for thier excellent care of Al. Norma Simpson passed away unexpectedly at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital on April 26, six months after celebrating her 90th birthday. She was a dedicated member of BCGREA, an active participant in the Abbotsford war brides association and a devoted caregiver to her dog Katey. She loved unconditionally those who survive her: her daughter, Wendy; grandson, Kris Garbet; brother, Newton Douglas and “adopted” daughter Verna Taskinen. Norma enjoyed her senior years and the quality of life she had. As she said just days before her passing, “I had a good life, a good husband, a good marriage, two wonderful children and an exceptional grandson.” The love she had for us will forever remain in our hearts. She will be missed beyond words as she reunites with those who predeceased her: her husband, Rae, and son David.
