Errington man stabbed in fight Victim was trying to defend his father in neighbourhood dispute NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
A 44-year-old man trying to defend his father was stabbed twice this week when a neighbourhood dispute got out of hand in Errington. Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman reported the stabbing took place at a home on Fairdowne Road in the afternoon of April 30 when the victim’s father got into a dispute with a man and woman who were also at the property. “The altercation turned into a physical fight and escalated quickly when a knife was pulled out,” Foreman said. “The victim attempted to defend his father and was stabbed in the melee.” Upon police attendance victim was being treated for two stab wounds, one to the stomach and one to the leg. Police quickly located the two suspects in the stabbing, a 35-year-old Parksville man and a 27-year-old woman from Errington. The woman was released on a promise to appear in court and the man was held in custody. Foreman said charges of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault have been recommended to the Crown. The victim was released from hospital and is currently recovering from his injuries.

Libby lops her locks for lupus Libby Elliott doesn’t want anyone to go through what one of her friends had to go through — waking up one day to feel like she had switched bodies with her grandmother. That’s why she cut her hair Thursday to raise money for research into lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can make even young people feel like their bodies are old, worn out and tired. Elliott cut her hair at Errington Elementary School on May 3, with her long hair going to Locks for Love, which makes wigs for young cancer patients, and all proceeds going towards lupus research. It’s not too late to donate to her worthy cause. Visit Libby’s site at www.facebook.com/libbysLocksForLupus for more information. — NEWS Staff

With a group of enthusiastic youth nature guides standing by, the new 650-metre Errington School Trail was officially opened Saturday, April 28. The trail is the first of the community trails linking low-traffic roads to be developed in Area F (Coombs, Errington, Hilliers) to be funded through the Arrowsmith Community Trails Project. Members of the public joined in the celebration sponsored by the Regional District of Nanaimo at the trailhead where students from Errington Elementary School sang O’ Canada. There was a special cake and refreshments for the occasion and the crowd was invited to take a walk along the trail where nature stations were set up each with its own nature guide. The eight nature guides were instructed and trained on the flora that exists throughout the trail. The Grade four and five students from Err-
ington Elementary School are now experts in their particular piece of nature and will impart their knowledge to other students at the school. The students wore signs with information about the native plants and trees that grow in the area such as the dull Oregon grape and the salal. During the opening ceremonies, Wendy Glover of the Errington Elementary School Parent Advisory Council (PAC) said the trail is a huge blessing for the school and fits in with the curriculum of health, fitness and the sciences. She said the student role models will encourage other kids to learn about nature and she is confident the peer mentorship program will flourish in school. The completion of the multi-use trail along undeveloped Fairdowne and Kopernick between the school and Middlegate is part of a planned network of trails in Area F that will make it easier for pedestrians, runners, cyclists and equestrians to get out and get active.

Feature FOCUS ON EDUCATION
A lesson through the lens Qualicum Beach Elementary School student takes a look at playground behaviours and teaches a valuable lesson to both teachers and students BRENDA GOUGH
reporter@pqbnews.com
The students at Qualicum Beach Elementary School (QBES) have been working hard on social responsibility and setting an example of how to behave at school. Last month during a school assembly a lesson on expected and unexpected behavior was presented in a power point presentation featuring the photography of grade four student Jessica Rose. Rose has become the unofficial school reporter and spends her time at lunch and recess taking pictures of students. Her EA Michele Jack said she realized that Rose has a great eye for pictures when she let the budding photogra-
pher snap some photos with her camera. “She got interested in photography last year. I let her use my camera and I realized she had great composition. She would group kids together and take amazing shots,” admitted Jack. Principal Leanna Garner purchased a camera for the school this year and Rose has been an enthusiastic shutter bug ever since. A classroom energy diet challenge put on by Canadian Geographic has motivated Qualicum Beach Middle School (QBMS) to lessen their carbon footprint. The contest to increase awareness and knowledge about energy use among Canadian students had several challenges including creating a video to encourage people to reduce their energy consumption. In February and March students worked together to complete a variety of energy saving
challenges which has resulted in less garbage going into the landfill and more items being recycled and composted. Best of all, two student video projects entered in the video challenge came in the top 50 in Canada and won the school two flip video cameras. Some of the challenges included designing an energy saving logo, calculating your carbon footprint and giving up electronic games for a week. One challenge had students go on a search for phantom power (standby power) sources around their classroom.

They had to identify and map the energy culprits and implement ways to reduce phantom energy use. The main objective was to help students understand the concept of phantom power and to ensure that students learn ways to reduce phantom power consumption. Students worked together to complete a variety of energy saving challenges and then submitted them to the Canadian Geographic website and gain points. Those who reached 30 points had their names put into a draw for prizes.
A variety of Grade six, seven and eight classrooms participated in the challenge but principal Darren Freeman informed school district trustees that the project really snowballed. “The neat thing is ... this project just took over the whole school and students were fully involved,” said Freeman. Two classrooms entered a challenge in which students worked together to create a one minute video promoting energy saving. The creative videos had an energy-wise message presented in a humorous way.
A small group of Grade eights worked as peer tutors helping the Grade six and seven classes with downloading, converting and editing video files. They also did a garbage inventory sort to show the rest of the school what was going into the landfill versus what could be recycled Teacher/Librarian Cheryl Cameron who helped organize the project is currently taking home the compost now being collected. Students hope that eventually all schools in the district will be on a compost collecting program.

“Cut broom in bloom!” It’s a familiar cry in District 69 which is on the front line of an Island wide battle against the invasive weed, according to experts. “Once people go out and cut broom, and realize how fun it is, and how much better the area looks, they find themselves looking for more broom to cut – in their own neighborhoods, parks and trails,” said Broombuster director Joanne Sales. “Then they cut it on their own. That’s the key to a community’s success.” Scotch broom, a non-native plant, has spread across south Vancouver Island and has a strong foothold in Oceanside, Sales said. Community groups and municipalities are hoping to stop the aggressive plant that crowds out native plants and damages the ecosystem. While people may enjoy the yellow flowers, broom is

called “the scourge of pasture land” because it takes over open fields, damages farms, prevents forest re-growth, is a fire hazard and is toxic to animals. Now is the time to cut Scotch broom. When cut at ground level while in bloom, it dies in the summer heat and does not spread seeds. The bloom lasts around four to six weeks depending on the weather. Sales said they are always looking for volunteers, both for the community cuts and to cut on their own. People don’t need permission to cut it on their own property. Call Broombusters to arrange a pick-up or leave it in place to decompose. The regional district and local municipalities support the initiative, but people should contact Broombusters before cutting on public land, they can provide tools and information. Volunteers will be out around the Highway 19 interchange at Parksville Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. and up the highway at the Qualicum Beach exit Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon to catch people’s attention during the Fire and Ice festivities. Thief hits cancer collection It was a particularly heartless theft. Oceanside RCMP reported this week that a man broke into a local gas station early on April 28 and stole a daffodil coin box used to collect funds for cancer. Corporal Jesse Foreman reported the theft took place just after 4 a.m. when a man used a crowbar to pry the lock off the door at the CoOp gas station on Island Highway and CorďŹ eld Street. Surveillance footage revealed that the suspect was acting alone. He is described as a Caucasian male, about six feet, two inches tall with
a slender build. He was wearing a blue ball cap, blue hooded sweatshirt, jeans and work boots. “Cancer has affected millions of people and it is hard to ďŹ nd someone who hasn’t lost a loved one to the disease,â€? Foreman said. “It is troubling that someone would steal a collection box that’s sole purpose is to collect money for research and awareness of the disease.â€? Anyone with information regarding this crime please call the Oceanside RCMP at 250248-6111 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. — NEWS staff

Technician switches a home from the old analog meters to the new — and controversial — smart meters in Qualicum Bay.
Don’t blame smart meters for higher power bills — Hydro There are many reasons for power bills spiking says utility NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
If Oceanside residents find their eyes popping when they look at their electricity bills, they shouldn’t blame their new smart meter, says BC Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk. Rather, he said, people should consider the recent eight per cent rate hike and their own consumption patterns as possible reasons for the spike. In an interview Wednesday, Olynyk said the perception that smart meters cause bills to jump is false. “Over half the questions we have in regards to high bills come from the old analog meters,” he said. “There is not a relationship between high bills and smart meters.” Olynyk said while there are many benefits to smart meters, they essentially do what the old analog meters do, which is
measure consumption. “They do nothing more than that,” he said. “When we get calls from customers we deal with every concern that comes in and we find there are a myriad of reasons why bills have gone up.” One possible reason, he said, could be that a household on an equal payment plan come up to their anniversary date, when their power use is analyzed and adjustments made. He said while some people’s bills may go up at that time, others may also go down, but Hydro never gets complaints about that. As well, he cited a cooler than usual winter, along with Hydro being granted an eight per cent rate increase over last year. “The bills may have gone up because of rates, because of weather or because of increased consumption,” he
said. “You would be surprised at some of the calls we get. People complain about their bills after they turn the heat off upstairs, but heat rises and so until the whole place is at an ambient temperature it will use the same amount of electricity — or more — to heat the house. “In some instances they’ve bought a hot tub and they don’t realize the impact that will have on their bill.” The beauty of the new digital meters, he said, is that people have the option to monitor their consumption. “If you want, you can see the pattern and why you are using so much electricity,” he said I had a friend whose heat pump was on the fritz and when those go, the electric bill goes through the roof. You can see why all of a sudden your bill is doubling or tripling and find out the source.”

orking British Columbians at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum should be at least somewhat pleased with the implementation on Tuesday of the third instalment of the provincial government’s increase to the minimum wage. At just $10.25 per hour, it’s not likely any celebrations will involve caviar, yachts or carriage rides around the park, but the 75-cent per hour bump to their paycheques should give them a chance to at least marginally improve their lifestyles or at least stay away from having to go to the food bank to make ends meet. True, some business groups are crying foul, arguing that British Columbia will stand to lose thousands and thousands of jobs because of the raise, but they might take a moment to ponder the philosophy of one of the most successful industrial magnates of all time, Henry Ford, who stressed the need to produce the highest quality products possible, for the lowest price possible, while paying the highest wages possible. Ford was well aware that in order for him to sell his automobiles, people needed to be able to afford to buy them, and that rings true in other areas as well. When you give money to those at the bottom end of the ladder, do they send it into an offshore account? No. What they do is they spend it — and chances are they are going to do so in their local community. Perhaps the guy flipping burgers isn’t going to spend that extra money at his place of work, but they could well spend it at the clothing store down the street or the grocery store on the corner. There’s a saying much-touted by the upper echelons in the business world when they are going to the government to give them yet another tax break or other lucrative concession: a rising tide floats all boats. What should be kept in mind however is that this saying holds true at the bottom end of the scale just as well — if not better — as at the top. — editorial by Neil Horner

QUOTABLE:
Letters HOSPITAL IS NEEDED It was with considerable surprise that I heard that the provincial government has budgeted $600 million to build new hospitals in both Campbell River and Comox. This, while refusing to spend any more than $15 million on a building that only provides services that duplicate what we already have here in the area. This may partly be a result of the comment made at the demonstration in front of our MLA’s ofďŹ ce recently where it was stated that Comox did not have a hospital. This was of course correct at the time. Information I have received since moving here is that Comox has one of the best hospitals on the Island. Having had the experience of attending the Nanaimo General on a Saturday evening recently and joining the lineup waiting for medical attention it was obvious that more emergency facilities are needed. There is however the possibility that there are requirements for more laboratory services here as I have had occasions where there have been long lineups at the existing clinic. The problem I have with building new hospitals where they already exist is that the travelling time and distance can be crucial. With this in mind I ďŹ nd that the distance between Comox and Campbell River is approximately 48 kms. This means anyone living between the two is only 24 kms from a hospital, whereas Parksville is 32 kms and Qualicum Beach is 41 kms from Nanaimo.

As well, there is only one road access to Nanaimo and as anyone who has ever been held up by an accident knows there is no other way to go! Port Alberni is 48 kms and that is not an option. If the intention of the powers that be is to have a building to house ofďŹ ces to provide information on better home care, I question why we need the medical centre at all. Therefore we need overnight beds and basic hospital services in this area! RICHARD A. YOUNG Parksville
COAL IS SCARY STUFF I have been following the different letters over the last few years regarding the proposed Raven coal mine. Of particular interest to me is the last letter from Mr. Alf Randall (THE NEWS, April 24) wherein he again states what he refers to as facts. The Tsable River for instance never has recuperated and there is no thriving ďŹ sh population. Mr. Randall is right about one thing though, the water runs through these coal veins clear and pure but the danger in coal mining comes in the extraction and handling. Environmentally there is going to be damage of substantial amounts. I don’t live in the Raven coal mine area. However, I am concerned. I would like everybody on the Island to Google “Burning the Future: Coal in Amer-
ica www.burningthefuture.org. It will scare the daylights out of anybody. HERMAN VANDERBYL Parksville
A PARK FOR US ALL Qualicum Beach is a beautiful town, though less beautiful now that the row of trees separating the buses from the car parking have been so summarily removed, but it is a town much in need of park areas. We have several walking trails, but little in the way of people places. With the removal of the buses we have a wonderful opportunity to create a gathering place for the town, a place where people could stop and chat, sit and enjoy the passing parade. A few benches, some owers, perhaps a fountain, could provide a gathering spot much like the English village green was the focal point of each village. Creating a park where the present car parking space is would be relatively easy to do and would be easily accessible for people walking or with their scooters. By putting a park in the space where the cars are parked, just imagine what a focal point for the community it could be. It would bring people to the area more effectively than any building, be it commercial or arts-oriented, could ever do. Please give thoughtful consideration to creating something for the future for all. CATHERINE KHAN Qualicum Beach

I have just read Arthur Black’s article in today’s newspaper (THE NEWS, May 1). It contains inaccurate statements that should be addressed. The Library of Alexandria was burned by Julius Caesar in 48 BC ... accidentally ... then again by the Emperor Aurelian about 370, then again by a Christian decree in 391. In 642, there was very little left of the great library. Please ask Arthur Black to check his facts before putting incorrect ‘information’ in print. The way he wrote this article, one would think that the Library of Alexandria was intact until the Moslem army came. That is not true! LOUISE WILSON Bowser
PUPPY PROBLEM The private member’s bill introduced by MLA Jane Thornthwaite will not help to curb puppy mills. Adding these regulations to the BC Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act will not impact a puppy mill operation. The bottom line for these operations is simple economics. Their sales market is pet stores. If you eliminate the market, production will stop. I applaud Ms. Thornthwaite for her interest in curbing puppy mills, but suggest that she should work on the details more thoroughly. Seek input from the governing body for ethical breeders — the Canadian Kennel Club. Their code of ethics is stricter than what she’s asking for.
Talk with the city councils of those communities that have banned the sale of live pets in stores. We all agree that the “distress” of animals in puppy mills is horrendous but if you’re going to take the time to present a bill to the legislature, get it right. It needs to be simple, enforceable and aimed in the right direction. As long as the public are uneducated that the “cute little doggy in the window” at the pet store is from a puppy mill, they will continue buy them. And as long as pet stores can continue to sell them, the puppy mills will always have a place to move their merchandise. British Columbia MLAs should vote no to this bill, and send it back to Ms. Thornthwaite’s drawing board to get a bill that will eliminate this problem at the source. DEL BEAULAC Nanaimo
RIGHT BACK AT YOU Recently a legitimate question was raised in parliament about the Conservative government’s ever-changing timetable for our military withdrawal from Afghanistan. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s petulant response was to drag up Hitler’s name in a pathetic attempt to smear the official opposition party. Joseph Goebbels, who was Hitler’s propaganda minister, said, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” Perhaps Hitler was in the forefront of Harper’s mind because he has been reading too many books about techniques used by earlier demigogues to manipulate the masses. Perhaps Canadian people are not as gullible as Harper and his propaganda mister, John Baird, believe. Perhaps Harper’s bluster and buffoonery will be seen as another blatant display of contempt for truth and democracy. LLOYD ATKINS Vernon

TEACHERS GREEDY As our teachers flex their collective muscle yet again, many of us are feeling less than sympathetic regarding their cause. The cost of living has been rising for all of us, but we are not in the position to demand more year after year. Many of us believe that teachers are already overpaid for what they do, with summers off, extended holidays and a bewildering number of Pro-D days. Let’s cut through the usual justifications and to the heart of the matter. Most people became teachers because of the income, benefits and security the profession offers, not because of their selfless devotion to teaching. They are in the education business and have been involved with it since their first day at university. They promote it because it pays them a handsome income. Their ever-increasing salaries are paid with tax dollars and they should be held accountable and their performance subject to review. The resource well they drink from is drying up. The overall economy is not strong and fewer of us can realistically expect substantial increases in income and benefits from our jobs. Their voracious appetite will eventually drain the well, possibly denying their own students a decent job and life. FRANK JENCIK Nanoose Bay
DON’T CUT FUNDS Canada has been a leading country over the years in the fight for global immunization by funding basic programs such as the Canadian International Immunization Initiative (CIII). Not renewing this successful little program would represent a huge number of deaths among the poorest of the world. Harper should stop cutting foreign aid to the poorest and must absolutely renew the CIII. BRUNO MARQUIS Gatineau, QC

y friend beckoned me over. “Hey Neil, check these out,” he said, “They’re pretty strong, but you might like them. Tell me what you think. Don’t worry about the price. It’s on me, the first time anyway, but I bet you’ll be back.” I was sceptical; as anyone might be when made such an offer, but I like to live large when I can and so I try the odd experiment, take the occasional chance. Sure, I replied. I’ll take a dozen. It was a fairly heavy package when he passed it to me, but that’s to be expected from duck eggs. They’re pretty big. I cooked myself up an omelette for Sunday breakfast the next morning. I used three eggs at first, but I added too much other stuff and it was way too lumpy. I added two more eggs, and then another one for good luck. Duck eggs, it’s true, are more flavourful than chicken, and they weren’t bad — at first — but oh, that was a lot of omelette. CORNER
The thing about marijuana is, it’s a weed. It grows pretty much anywhere, so it should be really, really cheap. Only its illegality gives it the kind of value that makes it of interest to organized crime. Make pot legal and it would be the crime bosses throwing their hands up in despair. Some would say it’s a moral issue and I would agree. I don’t see it as immoral to smoke pot, but I do see it as immoral to ruin the lives of thousands of people who would rather smoke a joint than pour a glass of wine after work. For that reason I take my hat off to Parksville mayor Chris Burger and all the other municipal officials at the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities convention who put themselves at risk of puerile ridicule by calling for an end to the war on drugs. It’s nice to see there are at least some municipal officials who can see beyond the circular logic that says pot is illegal because it’s bad and it’s bad because it’s illegal. Saddle up for a good cause in Nanoose Bay reporter@pqbnews.com
If anyone in your family is a horse lover or you are looking for something unique to do in support of a worthy cause, head to Arbutus Meadows in Nanoose Bay Saturday, May 5 as Vancouver Island’s Hope for Horses Society presents its annual Island Equine Affair. Based on education and awareness, the second annual Island Equine Affair will feature demonstrations, exhibitions, clinicians and more. The Hope for Horses Society is a non-profit organization that was founded on Vancouver Island, but which
contains board members across British Columbia. The society’s sole purpose is to raise and distribute funds which will provide aid to abused and starving equines in need including donkeys and mules. The goal is to provide a fund which reputable organizations such as the BC SPCA can apply for money to provide emergency and short-term care for animals in need. Through fundraising events such as the Equine Affair, the group can assist with essentials such as veterinary care, farrier and training services to allow these animals a much deserved second
chance at a healthier life and forever home. The vision for the Island Equine Affair caters to not only the most experienced of equestrians, but to families that contain horse-crazy enthusiasts who dream of one day owning their own steed. The goal of the society, say organiers, is to make the Island Equine Affair Vancouver Island’s premier equestrian event of its kind in years to come. The day will be educational, informative, entertaining and fun for the whole family with clinics and demonstrations put on by reigning champion Doug Mills, clas-

Lupus sufferers, their family and friends and ordinary concerned citizens will be walking to raise funds.
Lupus walkers to raise funds for research Eileen Fraser reports that the pipers are set to join the annual Walk for Lupus in Parksville this weekend and she hopes many others will join the casual walk to raise awareness of the debilitating disease. The goal is to help bring the autoimmune related disease which has no known cure, home to people who may not know of anyone with it. Called “the disease with a 1,000 fac-
es, symptoms range from joint pain, hair loss and fatigue to chest pain, swelling feet and legs, seizures or other neurological symptoms. There can be an unusual reaction to sunlight or various types of rashes, small ulcers in the nose or mouth, or the most notable symptom, a red rash across the nose and upper cheeks that look vaguely wolf-like, giving the disease its name — from the Latin for wolf.
People will meet at the clock tower in front of Home Hardware in downtown Parksville at 10 a.m. this Saturday, May 5 and walk up the highway to A&W for refreshments. Visit www.lupuscanada.org for more on the disease or call Eileen at 250-2482905 for more on the lupus support group which meets once a month at a local restaurant. — Auren Ruvinsky

Guatemala fundraiser has ambitious goal Qualicum Beach resident wants to raise $20,000 for poor children BRENDA GOUGH
reporter@pqbnews.com
Qualicum Beach resident Louise Sosa has a big task. She needs to raise $20,000 for the non-proďŹ t organization she supports to educate kids in a poor village in Guatemala. Sosa has been fundraising for Aldea Maya and its efforts in the Guatemalan highlands that assists indigenous Mayans to help themselves through education, nutrition, garden projects and micro-loans. Most students in Chuk Muk are hungry and illequipped but a primary school that sponsors the kids is changing all that and this year funding helped start a middle school in the village. For six years now Sosa has been raising funds to help pay teachers salaries and buy school supplies. At Christmas she sells cards handmade by students from various schools in Dis-
trict 69 with proceeds going towards educating villagers. Sosa said Aldea Maya supports a lot of projects in the village including teaching kids and adults how to grow a garden and make nutritious meals from the fruits of their labour. Every January she to travels to the area to help train students and villagers and brings donations collected in Oceanside. While in the village she pays fair trade prices for beadwork bracelets, and other items, which she sells locally to raise money for the students she has grown to know and love. When the middle school opened this year, Sosa said she was hoping to get 20 students and 40 showed up. “Normally they don’t go past Grade six. I have known a lot of these kids for a long time and the thought of them not going on to middle

Once again this year, The News will have a booth at Fire and Ice as the paper attempts to win back its crown for the people’s choice award.
Tomorrow is chili day in QB Annual Fire and Ice festival offers both visual and taste treats BRENDA GOUGH
reporter@pqbnews.com
The fire promises to be especially hot this year with 25 teams in their decorated booths competing for the best tasting chili. Teams must prepare a minimum of 75 litres of chili with each team having its own distinct flavour. A one-time cup purchase for $4 from the festival ticket sellers will allow you to go from team to team on the streets sampling the culinary fare and voting for your favourite. The teams, all from local restaurants, supermarkets, golf courses, organizations and businesses, are competing for the Best Professional, Best Amateur, and the coveted People’s Choice Award which the public votes for. There is a panel of judges that decides on the best amateur and best professional team. Chefs from Chateau Victoria and The Union Club will be doing some tasting and judging the samples with the winners receiving awards donated by Island Exposures.
The judges mark the chili entries anonymously by numbered entries...even they don’t know whose chili they’re voting on. Each chili has its own special recipe and ingredients. Some of the participating restaurants include Pacific Shores Resort and Spa, TighNa-Mara Seaside Resort, Old Dutch Inn, Lefty’s, Gary’s Bistro, The Shady Rest, The Rod and Gun and The Beach Club Resort. The winner of last year’s coveted plaques for Best Professional Chili and Best Presentation was Parksville’s Beach Club Resort. Chef Eric Edwards from the Cedar Room at Tigh-Na-Mara and his team of culinary professionals are hoping to take home the Best Professional Chili award this year. He said the kitchen team came up with a few ideas and they chose a recipe from one of the apprentices. Edwards said he tweaked it a bit and added his magic and they are now making 100 litres of the hearty stew.
“We don’t want to run out,” he admitted. Although the recipe is top secret, the chef did say it will include some smoked onions, sweet molasses and dark beer. Asked what makes a good chili, Edwards said some good ground beef and “cooking it a day before so the flavors set.” For 21 years now chef Edwards has been constantly creating new features to please the palate at the Parksville resort and each year he changes the chili recipe for the event. He said their chili will include garnishes and your choice of a corn and onion biscuit with roasted peppers or a buttermilk biscuit with cheese from Little Qualicum CheeseWorks. If you want to dig into some southwest inspired dishes, chili cups can be purchased from one of the four ticket tables located at the entrances to the festival; this enables you to try as many different chilies you like.

Studio exhibition slated for Nanoose Bay area Stuido group tour is set for May 5 and 6 BRENDA GOUGH
reporternews@pqbnews.com
Artists with the Nanoose Bay Studio Tour group are holding a group studio exhibition at Nanoose Place on May 5 and 6 to showcase all in one convenient location, the wide range of art and crafts being offered by the 14 participating studios. Works available include pottery, woodwork, metalwork, jewelry, paintings, prints, cards, quilts and items that defy easy categorization, all handmade by artists living and creating within the boundaries of Nanoose Bay. The group show will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days and admission is free. The Nanoose Bay Studio Tour group was originally formed in 2009 to provide local artists collectively with a way to make themselves and their studios known to the community and to visitors to the area.
Every Day is a Shoe Day! silver slip on wedge by Guess www.closetoyou.ca
Not only do the participating artists offer some amazing work, but many of the studio properties themselves are just as interesting as the artwork. Studios range from purposebuilt cabins in the garden, to attic studios in estate homes. There are workshops at the end of winding country lanes, and a converted boat house right on the beach. All are identified with a numbered starfish sign. Most participating studios are open to the public at varying times throughout the year, and all are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each of the three days of Thanksgiving weekend for the major annual studio tour event October 6, 7 and 8. Detailed information is available at www.NanooseBayStudioTour.com, as well as in the studio guide at the local visitors centres and various local businesses. Nanoose Place is located at 2925 Northwest Bay Road.

Chilliwack is bringing four decades of rocking music to Qualicum Beach on Wednesday, May 9. The Canadian band, which had several hits in the 1970s and early ‘80s from their 13 albums, is performing at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. The group is best known for their three biggest songs, My Girl (gone gone gone), I Believe and Watcha Gonna Do and the driving force behind Chilliwack, Bill Henderson said to this day those are the most requested songs. “Fly at Night is big and Crazy Talk… they still get a tremendous amount of radio air play,” said Henderson from his home on Salt Spring Island. The only original member of the band said even after all these years he enjoys performing the songs for appreciative audiences. “I don’t get tired when I play music. It gives you life. That is what it is all about… it makes you feel good and that is the magnet,” he said. Henderson said the current band has been together for 17 years now and added that although it is quite a long stretch for the same personnel they still have fun. “They are great musicians and we enjoy working together. You have to get thoroughly into it when you play the same songs and we have fun with it… that’s our job.” He said aside from the classics, they will perform a little bit of their newer music, including a song Henderson wrote called Patent on the Wind.

With the Internet a-buzz about the graphic photographs of an octopus eating a seagull by Victoria this week, Parksville resident Wayne Duke had his own tale to tell. “I witnessed a male bald eagle land in a tidal pool while visiting Denman Island,” he said. “Curious as to what he may be up to, I focused in as best as I could considering the distance and to my amazement he had grabbed onto an octopus.” Amazed, he took several photographs of the strugle that ensued. “What I saw was a real life struggle, nature at it’s rawest,” he said. “The eagle tried every possible way it could to remove this octopus from the shallow pool. In the end, I would consider it a draw. The eagle was totally exhausted and the octopus was minus a few bites but able to find safety in a crevice and await high tide.”
Green grants on tap The Regional District of Nanaimo is now providing incentives to residents who protect local water resources by purchasing rainwater harvesting systems and efficient toilets. The RDN has also renewed its Green Building Incentive Program in the RDN Electoral Areas, with the goal of encouraging residents to invest in energy efficiency, emission reductions and green building practices. Up to $750 is available for residents of all four municipalities and seven electoral areas who purchase and install a 1,000 gallon cistern for rainwater capture. In addition, a $50 rebate is available for electoral area residents who replace a conventional toilet with a dual flush or high-efficiency alternative. Green building incentives are available to residents for upgrading old wood stoves, installing domestic solar hot water systems, grading site-cut timber for use in construction, conducting home energy assessments and installing a residential electric vehicle charging station. — Submitted by RDN

BALLROOM DANCING
No glass slippers at this fantasy ball Island Fantasy Ball to feature local ballroom dancers on the floor
BRENDA GOUGH
reporter@pqbnews.com
Two days of breathtaking international ballroom dance competition takes place this weekend in Nanaimo and some local dancers will be bringing their all to the dance floor. The Island Fantasy Ball May 5 and 6 at the Beban Social Centre is a major event for ballroom dancing with competitors from age six to 60 dancing at levels from novice to expert. The competition attracts top quality dancers from all over and gives local dancers the opportunity to compete with the best of their peers. A colorful and exciting spectacle the event is presented by the Nanaimo Ballroom Dance Society and 13 dancers from the Forever Yung Dance Studio in Parksville will be competing. Saturday’s competition starts at noon and the evening finishes with some amazing performances just before concluding at 11:30 p.m. Sunday’s competition begins at 10 a.m. with a whole new slate of competitors and performances including the junior dancers from District 69. The day will feature the International open adult standard championship with timeless and classic waltzes, quicksteps and fox trot. This is the 20th anniversary of the Island Fantasy Ball and it features the undefeated champions, Zillion Wong and
Sarah Liang, who won the Standard BC Closed Championship from 2005 to 2011. They have now retired from amateur competition and the excitement this year will be to see the battle to take over their title, as well as to see top dancers from B.C., Canada and the rest of the world compete for the B.C. open championships. If you admire the beauty and grace of ballroom dance, this is an event to see. From the tantalizing tango to the elegant waltz, dancers will swirl about the room in gorgeous gowns and tuxedos. The skilled athletes who put it all on the dance floor have been working on their routines for months. Now, 16-year-old Ballenas Secondary School student Caitlyn Shworan and her partner Kwalikum Secondary School student 16-year-old Sam Doukakis are confident as they prepare to head into the contest this weekend. The pair have only been dancing together for three months but there were no jitters after a dress rehearsal April 27 at Nanoose Place. “We are pretty new but we have a good chance,” admitted Doukakis. “I’m excited just to be competing,” said Shworan. For the second year running the forever Yung Dance Studio is offering DanceSport scholarships to kids within the local area. Dancesport is the official name given to the sport of competitive dancing and

there are 10 scholarships being offered for youth aged seven to 11 who reside in District 69. You don’t need a partner and no experience is required to be eligible for the
scholarship. To apply, pick up a scholarship application package from the studio at 281 East Island Hwy. in Parksville and return it by June 22, 2012.

The K.S.S. Fine Arts Society annual Premiere Performance May 1 once again proved why music students from Kwalikum Secondary School under the leadership of Dave Stewart and Dan Craven continue to win awards for their performances. The event at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre was a scaled down version and did not include the visual arts but the tradition of excellence from the music program made for a stellar evening of music. The program opened with a performance by the grade 9/10 concert band conducted by
Stewart. Next up, the Grade 9/12 concert choir under the direction of Stewart wowed the crowd with five songs including an arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The brass quintet brilliantly performed Three Pieces and Donkey Riding. The Grade 9/12 concert band under the direction of Craven played three selections including Bravura, one of the best known Circus Marches of all time. The evening ended with the massed concert band led by Craven performing Fanfare and Furiosity. Clearly, The KSS music department is having another stellar year.

for you – as long as you have assets to go after if things go awry. But what if your house falls in value? What if this credit induced real estate boom of recent years loses steam? ere’s one for you, Huey: the credit card cheque. They are very tempting – borrow whatever you have available on your credit card at a very low rate of interest – typically 1.99 percent, give or take. I can’t argue that in isolation there are times when it makes sense to take advantage of the offer, even if the low rate is for only a limited time. If you have an outstanding credit card balance, for example, how could it not make sense to refinance at a much lower rate? At the very least it buys you time. The problem is: you would not need the additional credit if there wasn’t an underlying problem. In other words, how did you get to this point in the first place? But where does it lead?
DOLLARS
Are you buying time, or is it more like kicking the can By Jim Grant further down the road? What happens if you don’t have your financial house in order by the time the lowinterest period is up? Will you have alternatives to the 20 percent or so your credit card company will then want to charge you? Quite possible, since you probably wouldn’t have been offered this credit to begin with were you not creditworthy. Chances are you have assets (i.e. real estate) as well as equity. You have the means to pay them back – one way or another. If you have a house there is the possibility that it is worth more. You can refinance if necessary. Chances are your bank will be there

Taking on a controversial issue in Canada In other words, until there is a complete birth, Canada does not recognize the “child” as human. What then is it? Are most Canadians even aware that the origin of our law regarding the onset of life dates back to 1642. I do not believe this current definition is consistent with 21st century scientific and medical research. Every day, pregnant women, with the help of modern technology, can peer into their wombs and see ultrasound images of their children. Medicine recognizes a point of viability for a child in the womb. Science is prepared to experiment using pre-natal human tissue from conception onward. Psychologists and therapists routinely

refer to positive prebirth influences and pre-birth trauma. The current “born alive” definition of “human being” relies on centuries-old understandings of medicine, human development and science. Only three other countries in the world now share Canada’s refusal to recognize or protect the interests of children as human beings until the moment of complete birth: China, Vietnam, and North Korea. If we are to uphold Canada as a nation
of freedom and justice, we must uphold the rights of even the youngest and smallest of human persons. This has nothing to do with the debate regarding pro-life or pro-choice (that’s for another day!). This has to do with the fundamental principle of a civilized society attributing value and dignity to the individual. Countless people in nations such as ours have fought hard to gain and guard gender rights, the dignity of workers, the value of the disabled, equality regardless of ethnicity, and the protection of animals. Why is it when the issue of the rights of the unborn is raised that there is such fear? History has instructed us well that we can not, we must not, prejudicially se-

So I stand, as a voice for the voiceless, demanding justice for the unborn. We must fight for and uphold the basic human right and sanctity of the most vulnerable and most innocent ones of our society. To do otherwise is illogical and unconscionable. t’s not often that I will write or even speak about specific political issues. In recent weeks, though, parliamentarians and other individuals and groups have called for a special committee of the House of Commons to review section 223 of the Criminal Code. Because I believe that this is ultimately not a political position at all, but rather one touching the core of what it means to be human, what it means to be a civilized society, I hereby take my poke at the hornet’s nest. The existing legal definition of “human being” sets out that “a child becomes a human being … when it has completely proceeded, in a living state, from the body of its mother ...”

Isherwood leads Royals’ North Shore sweep BY JAMES CLARKE PQ News Sports
Royals’ ace Clayton Isherwood marked his return to the lineup Saturday, and Parksville’s Quality Foods Royals swept the visiting North Shore Twins 2-0 and 4-2 in BCPBL action. Isherwood, who has been getting a lot of attention for his efforts with the Canadian National Jr. Team this spring south of the border, pitched all seven innings and picked up his first win of the young season with the pinstripes in game one of the double header. Isherwood’s last start for the Royals was their season opener April 7 — he took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh in that one but the Royals lost 1-0 off an infield error. Saturday’s game, in sunny but cool conditions, was scoreless through five and a half innings when home grown catcher Mackenzie Parlow opened the scoring, and first year Royal Clarke Ohman, a 6’3” pitcher/infielder from Vancouver, drove in Rob Vlaj for the insurance marker. The Twins could only muster six hits off Isherwood, who looked comfortable

on the hill while striking out six. Of the 96 pitches Isherwood threw in the game one win, 68 were strikes.
“That’s typical of his performances,” Royals skipper Dave Wallace said after the dust settled, adding “it’s always great to have Clayton on the roster — he misses a lot here because of his national team commitments, which is great, but every time he’s back he gives us a chance to win.” Holed up in the bunker behind home plate Saturday was Walt Burrows, MLB Canadian Supervisor for the Major League Scouting Bureau, and Bob Smyth, a retired MLB area scout and longtime coach now living on the Island. “He’s doing a good job out there today,” Smyth commented as ‘Ish worked the hill. “He’s crafty, but he’s smooth and he’s a very confident pitcher. He’s a smart pitcher — he pitches as opposed to throws,” said Wallace. As for the presence of major league scouts, “that’s not unusual,” said Wallace, adding “the bureau guys are stationed on the Island, and they get out and watch a lot of games.” “It felt good to be back... and we kept it together and got the win so that was
great,” Isherwood said after. A senior at Brooks Secondary in Powell River, Isherwood just returned from Orlando, Florida and his second 10-day stint this year with the Jr. Nats, where they played against a number of professional minor league teams. “It’s a different game to get back to, but it’s great playing at home. It’s a young team this year,” he confirmed, “but they’re great teammates and I look forward to playing with them.” IN GAME TWO North Shore went up 1-0 in the top of the fourth but the Royals countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The Twins scored one more in the top of the fifth but that would be as close as they’d come. Starting pitcher Liam Joyce walked four, gave up two hits and a run and struck out three over his four innings of work. Nick Annau worked the fifth, and the Royals crafty little lefty with the big heart Yuki Takashashi worked the final two frames for his league-leading fourth save of the season. How fitting the sun made an appearance last Thursday, shining on the 12 men and women set to tee off and mark the much anticipated reopening of the back nine at Fairwinds. According to Fairwinds’ marketing and communication assistant manager Kyla Karakochuk, “Fairwinds Community and Resort have invested over one million dollars in the new irrigation system, and closed the back nine holes mid-October of 2011.” Six months later and the mood was upbeat as the grounds crew prepared for the first tee off from hole 10 to take the fairways for a test drive. “They put their heart and soul into it, so I just thought this would be a good way to thank them,” Fairwinds’ director of golf Ward Stouffer surmised as the group milled about in anticipation. “They’ve been out here since October 1; rain, shine, everything... knows how much work this was, or how tough a job this irrigation project was, than the guys that were in the dirt. They worked through all weather conditions,” said Ward. “They made this project happen.” Course superintendent Rod Siddons was all smiles as he had crew members sign their names on the commemorative gold coloured shovel, which will be given a permanent home somewhere on the back nine, and cut the ribbon to a smattering of applause and cheers. “This has been a long process,” said Karakochuk, whose detailed blog on the process can be found at fairwindsgolf.wordpress.com. The lay of the course, she said “should be the same... until the course is fully healed people may notice some rough patches, but that shouldn’t last too long. What they will notice over the summer is reduced wet spots, and one of the major benefits is that we will reduce our water consumption quite a bit because we can now control the areas in which we water and the amount of water.”
“He’s a competitor,” Wallace chuckled. Justin Dieleman had the key hit in that game — a timely
two-run RBI standup double in the fourth inning. “As a team we played two very solid games defensively and
offensively, we out hit the Twins 9-5 in game two,” said Wallace, adding “we were good on Saturday, but we weren’t good enough

The weekend split lifts the Royals to 5-7 on the season for eighth in the league. Further to our coverage of the Ravensong Waterdancers 15th annual Spring Watershow last Sunday, this year’s installment also saw a group of eight ladies ranging in age from 25-67 perform the routine they’ve been working on for months. The team, headed by former longtime Waterdancers head coach Heidi Bromley and Thea Miscavish, also included Lynne Donaldson, Joan Lightfoot, Patricia Nelson, Stephanie Penner, Erin Roberts and Larissa Tchernova who started swimming together last October and practiced every Sunday with the Waterdancers. “Some of the ladies had dabbled in synchro before, but a couple were brand new to the sport,” said Bromley, adding “it has been fun working with the ladies and swimming our routine, and with the long four week break over spring break and Easter it was like starting over again, but it all came together in the last two weeks and they swam and performed well.” Swam well indeed.
JAMES CLARKE PHOTO
Larissa Tchernova was right at home in the water last Sunday as part of the Spring Watershow.
The ladies, who swam to a love song medley, earned a big round of applause for their three minute routine. “Wow, that was really good... they knocked it out of the park,” one proud husband piped up pool
side after. “It was a joy to swim with the Waterdancers on the Sunday practices,” said Bromley, adding “the young swimmers were so supportive of our group and cheering us on as well as the ladies
cheering and enjoying seeing (the young swimmers) progress throughout the season and do so well in the swim meets. “It just shows that the sport is great for young and old(er) alike,” she said.
