A proposed cable water ski and wakeboard park could soon become a reality in Abbotsford. Council has approved a suggestion by staff to make a request for proposals (RFP) on the project, which would be located at Albert Dyck Park. There are at least three groups which have expressed interest in building and running the facility that would allow ski enthusiasts to participate in the sport without needing a boat. The cable system is motorized and can pull people along the water on a designated route. It is reportedly able to serve more people, at a lesser cost, than conventional water skiing. When the idea came before council in December 2011, the Fraser Valley Water Ski Club expressed concerns that the automated ski park would limit its own activities. However, one of the proposed builders, Stu McKeown, has been working with the group to see if they could coexist. On Monday, Dave Miller, representing the water ski club told council the association is withdrawing its objections, adding the club is now in favour of the cable park. “That is the club’s perspective on it and as long as we can make it work

Abbotsford Police have arrested a man for selling fake tickets to a Madonna (above) concert scheduled for Sept. 29 in Vancouver.

A 24-year-old man who tried to sell bogus Madonna concert tickets to two plainclothes Abbotsford Police officers has been arrested and is now facing fraud charges. Police are now trying to determine if the same man is responsible for previously having sold fake tickets for two sold-out Coldplay concerts at Rogers Arena in Vancouver last month. Const. Ian MacDonald said police received five separate complaints following the Coldplay concerts on April 20 and 21 from people who had purchased tickets from an individual selling them on Craigslist. They didn’t initially realize that the tickets were fake. “Most of them actually got to the door (of the concert) and got turned away,” MacDonald said. It appeared the man had legitimately purchased two tickets online and then made photocopies, slightly altering some of them, for the buyers. When meeting with the purchasers in Abbotsford to deliver their tickets, he would show his credit card receipt

as proof he had bought them online. A major crime detective began a small sting operation in response to these incidents, searching on Craigslist for postings that used similar wording and style. In late April, he contacted an individual who was offering to sell tickets for the Sept. 29 Madonna concert at Rogers Arena. Police determined the tickets were bogus, and the officer then made arrangements to meet with the seller and exchange them for cash. Two plainclothes officers went to that meeting at an Abbotsford restaurant on Tuesday afternoon, when the fake tickets were handed over and the man was arrested. MacDonald cautions the public to be wary of purchasing concert tickets through online ads. “The best protection I can offer is they buy their tickets from a reputable seller – if not the original vendor, then a re-seller with a track record. We warn people all the time that people are not necessarily who they purport to be on the Internet.” And, for the fraudsters, he issues this warning: “Their next customer may be an Abbotsford Police detective.”

Abbotsford Police talk to witnesses of an armed robbery at Abby Pizza Place on Old Yale Road. The incident took place just before midnight Tuesday and was followed by a standoff at a home. but the other occupant refused to surrender, and the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team was called in. The roads were blocked off for hours during the standoff, which ended at about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday when police entered the home. A 31-year-old man was found hiding in the refrigerator.

“The clue (to police) was all the food and all the racks lying on the floor,” MacDonald said. He said the two men are well-known to police, with the 31-year-old having more than 80 interactions on file. No charges have yet been laid, but police are continuing to investigate the links between the two men and the robbery at Abby Pizza

Place. They are also looking into whether there are any connections to a robbery that occurred Sunday night at the Domino’s Pizza at 32465 South Fraser Way. In that incident, the male suspect did not use a weapon. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604859-5225.

Male drivers offer rides to girls Police issue warning after two incidents The Abbotsford Police Department is alerting the public to two incidents in the last week in which adult men approached young girls and offered them rides. Const. Ian MacDonald said the first occurred last Wednesday, April 25 between 4 and 5 p.m. A 12-year-old girl was walking in the area of McKenzie Road near Victory Boulevard when a man driving a newer model SUV pulled up next to her. He asked her if she wanted a ride, but the girl ignored him and went on her way. The man is described as South Asian, 30 to 40 years old, clean-shaven and wearing sunglasses. The second incident took place on

Sunday, April 29 at about 7 p.m. A 15-year-old girl was walking home from work in the area of Vinewood and Ware streets when she noticed a newer model red van driving slowly beside her. MacDonald said a man called out to her two or three times, asking her if she needed a ride and suggesting she get in the vehicle. The girl refused and the man drove away. MACDONALD He is described as Asian, in his late 40s or early 50s, with dark hair and wrinkles, and wearing a dark-coloured jacket. He spoke with a distinct accent and

After the information was posted online on Tuesday, Abbotsford Police received a report that another 15-yearold girl was approached a few weeks ago by an Asian man driving a red van near Maclure and Townline roads. No further details were yet available on that incident. He said these incidents should serve as a reminder to parents to discuss personal safety with their kids, or for parents to walk with their children or arrange that they walk in pairs or groups. It began with the robbery of an Abbotsford pizza restaurant and ended almost six hours later when the subject of a police standoff was found hiding in a refrigerator. The busy shift for Abbotsford Police started just before midnight on Tuesday, when Abby Pizza Place at 33995 Old Yale Rd. was robbed. Const. The 30-year-old man was immediately arrested. Police then set up containment around the home, which appeared to have two other people inside. A woman who came out of the residence was detained,

Driver knocks over baby in stroller A driver knocked over a stroller containing an 18-month-old baby on Monday afternoon in Abbotsford, but the child was not harmed. The boy was being pushed by his mom, who was walking from east to west in the north crosswalk at South Fraser Way and Sumas Way at about 3:45 p.m. A driver in a pickup truck was making a left turn from South Fraser Way, when he clipped the front end of the stroller and knocked it onto its side, said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

The driver did not stop, and police are now hoping to talk to him. MacDonald said it’s possible that he did not realize he had hit the stroller. The man is described as Caucasian and in his mid- to late 20s. He was driving a bluish-green, four-door Dodge pickup with a yellow logo or writing on the passenger side and a rack covering the back window. Anyone with information is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.

Metro Vancouver leaders so far aren’t putting much stock into suggestions that South of Fraser cities could break away and form their own regional district. Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese has said he wants his community to look at splitting from Metro and TransLink and either join the Fraser Valley Re gional D i s t r i c t (FVRD) or form a new p a r t n e rship with Abbotsford, which wants to leave the BANMAN FVRD. He cited disappointment over TransLink’s decision to freeze transit upgrades such as the promised Highway 1 RapidBus until its finances are sorted out. Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman confirmed last month that he had spoken “informally” to his Langley Township counterpart, saying he was exploring all available options. Metro board chair Greg Moore said he thinks the idea is mainly being driven by Abbotsford, and warned a

breakaway could be costly to Langley taxpayers. “I would suggest the cost implications would be quite high for good quality services they already receive,” he said. Moore said fans of the idea seem to mix up the roles of TransLink and Metro Vancouver, wrongly assuming Langley would stop paying the 17 cent per litre TransLink gas tax by leaving Metro. He said that would depend on the province’s willingness to let a breakaway municipality exit TransLink as well. Likewise, he said, anger over the impending tolls on the Port Mann Bridge have nothing to do with the regional district. “That’s a provincial government toll,” Moore said. “We won’t see a penny of that at the regional district or TransLink even.” Moore said he welcomes cities that want to probe the value they get from the regional district, and added he and the board’s vice-chair will visit each council in the weeks ahead to answer questions about Metro services and funding. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said Metro isn’t perfect and Langley politicians are within their rights to ask tough questions. The bulk of Metro’s budget

is spent delivering drinking water, treating sewage and disposing of garbage. Corrigan, the regional planning committee chair, said it’s not clear how Metro might unravel the financing of its water, sewer and other infrastructure in the event of a breakup, but said “anything can be accomplished” if there’s political will. He said the talk may be just “sabre rattling” born out of frustration with TransLink. But Corrigan also said Langley politicians have themselves FROESE to blame for pushing the province to expand the Highway 1 freeway, which Metro planners warned would undercut future demand for transit. “When you spend $3.5 billion on a road and a bridge, there isn’t an awful lot left over for transit,” he said. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said she’s not interested in trying to form a new South of Fraser area regional district at this time. “That’s not a priority on our agenda,” she said.

At Home What’s a nice nanny like me doing in the kitchen at 2 a.m. with a can of formula in one hand and a syringe in the other? Getting ready to hand-feed 10-day old pups, of course. Ten days ago, Duchess, my daughter’s standard poodle, had pups. On day one we all stood around and admired mother and babies. On day two, “mother” wasn’t looking very well. Turns out she had a bowel obstruction from eating a stuffed toy and needed major surgery. Not knowing when Duchess would be back from the vet, or if she would be able to nurse, daughter Dianne got puppy formula from the pet store, mixed it with evaporated milk, and invested in a number of tiny syringes. We all lined up for the lessons. Here is what she taught us. Weigh the pup on the kitchen scale. Hold the pup on its

back in the palm of your hand. Insert the tip of the syringe into its mouth. Squeeze the syringe to expel one ml of formula. Wait for a second or two till that bit goes down, then squeeze again. When the pup has ingested 10 ml, it’s time to get him to pee. (What?) Animal moms massage their offsprings to stimulate urination and defecation. (Who knew?) So, the final step is to gently rub them until they “produce.” Then weigh them again and place each pup in the separate box that has been prepared for the fed ones with a heating pad and towels. Simple, eh? Here’s what really happens. First, the pup wiggles so much on the scale, he falls off. Fortunately, the drop is only a couple of inches so no damage done. Holding the pup in the palm of one’s hand requires at least four other human hands to secure the little flailing paws and wiggly head. Then there’s the part where the pup already knows how to clamp its jaw shut. Three days old and we have nine natural fighters on our hands! Next, wrap the pup up in yards of paper towel. This reduces the wiggling and helps keep the human dry. Squeeze one

ml, wipe the spat-out formula off your trousers, re-adjust the paper towel, squeeze again. After 15 minutes, the syringe is empty. How much went in and how much went on is questionable. Peepee time made me laugh out loud. The male pups respond just like

Realizing this could turn into a threeweek 24/7 effort, we put out the word for a surrogate nursing mom. Enter Moxie, a golden retriever who belongs to one of Dianne’s friends. Moxie’s own pups had just been weaned and she still had some milk.

As soon as she arrived, Moxie went into the big pen, laid down and the pups headed right for her. Phew! For the next week, supplementing continued to ensure the pups were getting enough milk. Mike and Dianne took turns feeding the pups every four hours and soon had that “new-parentjust-home-from-the-hospital” look – groggy/cranky. Meanwhile, Duchess had moved into our place to recover. After her meds were done, we brought the two smallest pups over for her to nurse. Duchess was really glad to see them and started caring for them right away. But, being the smallest, they still needed supplemental feedings. Now I’m the groggy/cranky 2 a.m. parent. Except I’m not really cranky. I’m in a state of amazement – partly that nature is so fantastic that a surrogate dog can step in and take over for the sick mom. Partly that the real mom is still so interested in her pups after all she’s been through. Partly because the pups are so darn cute, and mostly because Dianne loves animals so much she has learned how to do all this stuff. letters Pot too unhealthy to be legal In his letter “Mayors deserve support in pot decriminalization,” (May 1 edition of The News), Gary Huntbatch seems to be an apologist for the prodrug lobby. Tobacco has been controlled/ legal for many years. The use of tobacco by youth continued to increase until millions of dollars were spent educating the public of the harm being caused. How many deaths have been caused by tobacco? Marijuana is more dangerous than tobacco. Current research tells us there is four times the amount of tar in a marijuana cigarette as a tobacco cigarette; a major cancer-causing chemical, Benzo(a)pyrene, is present

in greater quantities in marijuana than in cigarettes; and we know smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer. The risk of heart attack is five times higher than usual in the hour after smoking marijuana. A person who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as much tar and cancer-causing chemicals into his or her lungs as someone who smokes a pack of cigerettes every day. Smoking marijuana weakens the immune system, raises the risk of lung infections, and is linked with depression, suicidal thoughts and schizophrenia. There is potential for marijuana smoking during pregnancy to damage the fetal

brain. Research tells us that young people who use drugs are more likely to engage in other highrisk behaviours. In trying to save a few lives in the criminal element, how many youth would be at risk by making marijuana legal? If it’s legal it must be considered safe? Let’s give our head a shake and think again! Where is Health Canada? They have studies on everything else, why not a complete study of marijuana? If politicians approve marijuana as a legal drug and a few years down the road it becomes obvious that it creates serious harm, who will be sued? Eric Myrholm

the city is in the minority by allowing only two dogs per household. He said the majority of local districts allow three and he saw no significant problems arising from the increase. Staff examined 19 districts and found 11 allowed three, seven allowed two and one (Port Moody) allowed four.

Coun. John Smith pointed out that by allowing more dogs per household, the city could see a small increase in revenue as more dog licences would be issued. Currently, 8,500 dogs are licensed in Abbotsford each year. There are no bylaws determining how many cats a household can own.

Police warn killing in Mexico may reignite B.C. gang strife Jeff NAGEL Black Press

Police are warning more retaliatory gang violence could break out here after the murder of a B.C. organized crime figure in Mexico. Thomas Gisby was shot pointblank Saturday in a Starbucks in Nuevo Vallarta by two gunmen who then fled. He had previously been the target of a Jan. 16 bombing in Whistler, where Gisby and another man camped in an RV escaped with minor injuries. RCMP quickly issued a warning that Gisby’s slaying could trigger revenge attacks or violence between his gangland allies and enemies in B.C. “We expect this would result in heightened tension between various organized crime groups in the Lower Mainland and, potentially, the province,” RCMP Sgt. Duncan Pound said. Gisby is said by police to have been a “high-ranking organized crime figure” who headed up his own B.C. gang – which they referred to as the Gisby Crime Group – but also had links to other B.C. groups involved in violent attacks in recent years. “The criminal activity in which he was engaged extended across Canada and i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y, ” Pound said. There are reports the middle-aged Gisby may have had ties to Metro Vancouver’s Dhak and Duhre crime groups, whose members were targeted after gangster Jonathan Bacon of

Abbotsford was shot to death in Kelowna last summer. Over the past two years at least two other murders of alleged gangsters are believed by police to be linked to the strife between the groups. Police believe the body count may have been higher had it not been for past public warnings and officer efforts to caution

Hospital transcription jobs set to be axed Union attacks shift to private workers Health authorities plan to save $3 million by privatizing the jobs of 130 medical transcriptionists who work in Abbotsford, New Westminster and downtown Vancouver. The move has angered the Hospital Employees’ Union, which argues outsourcing the work will put sensitive patient information in less secure hands because the bidding firms use employees who work from their homes. “We have concerns that virtually all patient records will be transcribed by these subcontractors in private homes on personal computers anywhere in the country,” HEU spokesman Mike Old said. Doctors dictate findings on patients’ conditions, test results and other information, which is then sent to transcriptionists to be added to the health record system. Lower Mainland health authorities already outsource nearly half their transcription to Ontario-based Accentus and the union says its home-based subcontractors must log twice as many hours to earn the same pay as local HEU members, with fewer benefits. Yoel Robens-Paradise, executive director for Lower Mainland health information management at Providence Health Care, denies there is any security risk and noted the system has been used for years.

Robens-Paradise said the shift is also part of a move to replace duplicate dictation software systems, some of which are older and don’t make best use of speech recognition technology. Private firms with more distributed workers can complete transcription faster than a fixed number of in-house staff, he said, and the shift will significantly cut transcription costs from the current $14 million annually. “We can save $3 million in taxpayers’ money and have that go back into providing direct care in the health system,” he said. Medical transcriptionists had previously been based at each local hospital, then were consolidated into three hubs in the region.

Concert tonight The Valley Concert Society is presenting percussionist Sal Ferreras and the Southern Cross Trio in concert tonight (May 4) at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Ferreras has collaborated in almost every musical genre on the Canadian music scene. Over the last few years his touring engagements have taken him to the Czech Republic, Germany, Portugal, Taiwan, China, Australia and the United States.

He is artistic director of the Literary Cabaret at the Vancouver International Writers Festival and dean of the Vancouver Community College School of Music. In November 2003, he was inducted into the British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame. On Tuesday afternoon, when Deion Bain, Daniel Markin and Jake Heathcote gathered to chat with media about parlaying their success with the W.J. Mouat Hawks into university football scholarships, the conversation took a brief detour into some friendly chirping. Bain, reflecting on his decision to sign with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, noted that he’ll be joining fellow Mouat senior Devin Logan on the Saskatoon campus – the running back committed to the Huskies back in February. Markin took that as his cue to chime in. “At least you’ll have one friend,” he joked, as Bain and Heathcote cracked up. The good-natured jab was indicative of bond the trio forged as teammates, and as they look back on their high school football careers, they have a lot of positive memories. They helped lead Mouat on a deep playoff run in 2011, making it to the AAA Subway Bowl, where they lost to Mount Douglas. Bain, as an underclassman, built a reputation as one of B.C.’s best defensive backs. But during his senior year, he was a revelation on the offensive side of the ball, leading the AAA league in receptions (50), receiving yards (880) and touchdown catches (13). He’ll line up as a receiver for the Huskies. “They’ve got a really fun football atmosphere,” said Bain, explaining his choice of Saskatchewan over UBC. “They get 8,000 to 9,000 fans every game.” Heathcote, an all-province middle linebacker, led the AAA circuit with 109 tackles last season. He’s headed to McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., where he’ll also join forces with a former teammate. Mouat product Allan Dicks is going into his third year with the Marauders. Heathcote hopes his career plays out like Dicks’s has – the defensive back helped McMaster win the Vanier Cup national championship last fall. “That’s definitely

one of the reasons I’m going there,” Heathcote noted. “They have a successful team.” Markin, the Hawks’ quarterback, is ticketed for North Park University, an NCAA Division III school in Chicago. Div. III programs don’t offer athletic scholarships, but Markin – a straight-A student – has secured an academic scholarship. “I’m going there for the whole experience,” said Markin, whose 1,732 passing yards were tops in AAA. “At smaller universities, you’re more interactive in your education.”

Mike Mason, a high jumper with Abbotsford’s Valley Royals track and field club, continues to soar higher as he gears up for the London Olympics. Mason, a Nanoose Bay, B.C. native who lives and trains in Abbotsford under the guidance of Royals power/speed coach Ziggy Szelagowicz, leaped a personal best 2.31 metres on Monday evening at an international event in Guadeloupe. That height meets the Canadian Olympic A+ qualifying standard.

Last month, Mason twice cleared the B standard of 2.27m during meets at Mt. Sac and UBC. All that’s left now for Mason, in terms of Olympic qualifying, is to place among the top three at the Canadian Championships in Edmonton in late June. Mason’s next major competitions will be the Lafarge International Track Classic, which runs in Abbotsford on Wednesday, June 6, and the Harry Jerome meet at Swangard Stadium on June 10.

For Noah Juulsen, balancing the excitement of the Western Hockey Leagueâ€™s draft day with the demands of schoolwork required a bit of stealth. So on Thursday morning, as he sat in his Grade 9 science class at Yale Secondary, he held his phone under his desk, periodically stealing glances at the WHL web page that carried the live bantam draft results. Just before 11 a.m., the 15-yearold saw his name appear on the screen. Heâ€™d been selected in the fourth round, 70th overall, by the Everett Silvertips. â€œI didnâ€™t know if Iâ€™d go this morning (in the top four rounds),â€? enthused Juulsen, a promising 5â€™11â€? defenceman. â€œWhen I saw my name, it felt good.â€? Juulsen, a member of the hockey academy at Yale, was captain of the Abbotsford bantam Tier 1 Hawks this past season. Heâ€™s a defensive-minded blueliner with an affinity for throwing hip checks, and he was pleased to end up close to home with the Silvertips. Noah Juulsen, a member of the Yale hockey academy and captain of the Abbotsford bantam Tier 1 Hawks, was picked by Everett in the WHL draft. A1 bantam teams during the 2010-11 season, then joined the Pursuit of Excellence (POE) hockey academy in Kelowna last fall. A diminutive player at 5â€™6â€?, he knew he needed to get stronger and faster, and felt the elite POE program was ideal. Kawaguchi turned in a strong season, earning MVP honours as his POE squad won the prestigious Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament

(KIBIHT) in April. The youngster boasts some good hockey bloodlines â€“ his cousin Devin Setoguchi plays for the NHLâ€™s Minnesota Wild. Kawaguchi draws inspiration from his cousin, but noted they have contrasting styles. â€œHe (Setoguchi) is a pure goalscorer â€“ he always looks for the shot first,â€? HERFORD Karen Evelyn 1950-2012 Karen Evelyn Herford aged 61 passed away peacefully on May 1, 2012 at the Mission Memorial Hospital. LOCKE – Mary (nee Harasymchuk) Born July 11, 1920, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2012 at age 91. Predeceased by her husband Harold in 1996, Mary is survived by her loving son, Bryan (Verna); grandson Tom (Heather) great grandsons Davin, Nathan and Owen; granddaughter Melissa (Kelly) great granddaughters Erika, Alexx and Isabella; granddaughter Pamela (Darren) great granddaughters Makenna and Cara; grandson Jason (Priscilla); sister Polly Day; brothers Paul Harasymchuk (Barb) & Joe Harasymchuk (June); sister-inlaws Marge Harasymchuk and Irene Evans together with numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was born in Grindrod, B.C. She spent most of her life in Prince George and Vancouver working in the food service industry before retiring to Abbotsford in 1973. Mary took great pride in her home and was often seen outside tending to her beautiful flower garden with her beloved dog Mitzi. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be greatly missed by all. The family takes time to thank the staff of Abbotsford Regional Hospital for their dedication to her care and comfort. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Born November 15, 1925 (Toronto, ON) Bill Brown of Sooke, BC (previously of Vancouver and Richmond, BC) lived to age 86. Beloved Husband to the late Margaret Rose Brown (nee Ellis), Loving Father to his children Wm. Peter, Rosalind Ann, and Cynthia Margaret (John), Cherished grandfather to grandson Jeremy and to granddaughter Amber (Cole), Adoring Great Grand-father to Olivia Kelly Ann. Son of John James Brown and Betsey Anderson Brown of the county York, Toronto, Ontario. Bill was predeceased by his brothers Johnny, Al, and George, and by his sister Betty, as well as by his brother-in-law Frank, his brothers-in-law Chuck and Bill. Most recently by his son-in-law Al, by his sister-in-law Peggy, his brother-in-law David (Julie), and sisterin-law Helen Jan. Bill is survived by his sister-in-law Dodie, sister-in-law Joyce (Ray), and by his sister-in-law Jess. As well as by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews. A memorial service celebrating Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, May 5th, 2012, at 1 pm, at St. John the Baptist Heritage Church, on Glencairn Lane in Colwood, BC. Rev. Jim Lauder officiating. She leaves wonderful memories for her husband Wilhelm (Wim), sons Fred (Elske), Chris (Lori), Nito, Konrad (Barb), Klaus (Betty), (Dawnya), Ricki (John), Chris (Monica), Jan (Stephanie), all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Hans von Hardenberg (1995) and son Ben von Hardenberg (2003). Mechthild loved her family and especially family gatherings. We will miss her at every family celebration. It was a testament to her support of others that family and friends came to visit, call or write regularly. The special memories held by her sons are a measure of the enduring love and support Mechthild gave to them. Thank you to the many long time friends and neighbours who came or called regularly with gestures of kindness, encouragement and humour. She appreciated your friendship so much.
