There are tennis courts, a campsite, a shopping mall, a post office, an elementary school, a gas station, a non-denominational church, a large community hall and a regional airport. Horse sports The unique design of the 108 subdivision with its extensive use of greenbelt areas gives residents unrestricted access to both Sepa and 108 lakes, and acres of green space ensure privacy and recreation. There is a large public beach for swimming and the 108 Lake allows electric motors only. Sepa Lake has an upgraded low-mobility trail that is wheelchair accessible and is an easy and interesting walk, jog or ride. The unique combination of rolling grasslands, aspen copses, and forested tracts attracts artists, birdwatchers, photographers, nature 108 Golf Course lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts from around

A 65-kilometre drive southeast of 100 Mile House puts travellers at one of the provinceís most scenic rest stops that overlooks beautiful Lac des Roches, the most photographed lake in British Columbia. Located on the edge of the Interior Plateau, this is the only lake in the Cariboo that drains east to the North Thompson River. It is this waterway path that provided a natural trail for the aboriginal people, fur traders and pioneers to access the Cariboo from the east. Evidence of the original Hudson’s Bay Fur Brigade Trail can still be found along Highway 24 and the 15-km lakeshore. Lac des Roches is known for its mayfly hatch and it attracts fishers from all over North America in late spring. Lac des Roches

Forest Grove

Forest Grove is an historic community on Canim-Hendrix Lake Road, 21 kilometres from Highway 97. First settled around 1912, the village became the centre of business and social life for sawmill workers and their families. Although some structures, such as the bank are gone and the berm of the o n c e - t h r i v - You may see cows wandering ing racetrack freely in Forest Grove across from the store is barely discernible among the trees, the Forest Grove of today retains the flavour of the old village. Many older bungalows have been restored primarily by retired couples, with a sprinkling of young families adding new life to the Grove. Business in the Grove centres at the old Felker store, which has expanded to include a post office, a hardware store, a hair care salon and a pizza place. Next to the store is the Royal Canadian Legion where visitors are invited to enjoy the ambience and excellent meals. A general store/ gas bar is at the corner, and a laundromat and fire hall are close by. Straight through the intersection on Eagle Creek Road are the school and a community complex that includes a hall, library, curling rink and a baseball diamond. Across from the school, Shaw Drive leads uphill to a pioneer cemetery. Forest Grove has a variety of service clubs and social groups that welcome visitors. A walking club meets Mondays at the fire hall at 11 a.m. and a 50-Plus Group gathers at the Legion on Wednesdays. The Legion also offers cribbage, darts, pool, and a popular Saturday meat draw. The 94 Lions meet at the commu-
nity hall on second and fourth Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Hootenannies, an entertaining mix of music, spoken word and dance, are held at the community hall on a regular basis. Several circle tours branch out from Forest Grove. Canim-Hendrix Lake Road continues to the right and drops down to the hills and fields of the Canim Lake Reserve. South Canim Road on the right offers stunning lakeside scenes. Past South Canim Road, CanimHendrix rises to spectacular views of the lake, where tall forested mountains drop straight to the water and the magnificent Cariboo Mountains are a backdrop. Eagle Creek Road near the end of the pavement will bring you back to Forest Grove past beautiful Ruth Lake Park with its sandy beach and Hootenanny performer log picnic Oren Barter shelter. Another circle drive can be made from the Grove by proceeding through the intersection, on Eagle Creek Road. The road continues on to Ruth Lake Park. About a kilometre from the park, Bradley Creek Road (straight ahead) will take you along an old pioneer trail through peaceful, narrow valleys. The road ends at a T where a left turn onto Wilcox Road will bring you back to Forest Grove through quiet forests, past small lakes and an unusual view of Timothy Mountain. Situated between Clinton and 100 Mile House, 70 Mile House, born in the days of the Cariboo Gold Rush, is home to around 300 people. The area was once known for logging, but is now primarily a tourist area. Green Lake, 10 kilometres east of Highway 97, is a popular fishing spot in summer. Fun and frolic or peace and quiet By Gisele Poliseno Watch and Green lakes are a few kilometres east of 70 Mile House and are a haven for yearround recreation enthusiasts. Visitors and locals alike enjoy the clean, clear lakes surrounded by tall evergreens and fluttering aspen trees. One can enjoy water sports, fishing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and bird watching or just taking in the peace and quiet the area offers. There are endless winter activities, including ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing, and sleigh rides. Green Lake is 13 kilometres off Highway 97 from 70 Mile House. The lake is 14 km long and 120 feet deep. The gently sloping shoreline makes ideal for swimming. It is a popular family vacation lake, with four provincial parks where one can spend the day boating, picnicking, swimming and camping. The south shore offers spectacular sunsets, while the north shore beaches are less rocky. Watch Lake is 30 km from 70 Mile House via North Green Lake Road. The lake is five km
long and 35 feet deep and has numerous bays. It is a perfect lake for canoeing, and boasts eight-pound-plus rainbow trout. Powerboats are allowed on the lake, but there is an eightkm/h speed restriction. Visitors will also find many guest and working ranches, as well as resorts with accommodations, such as cabin rentals, camping, RV sites and a bed-and-breakfast. Special events • The annual fishing derby is held on the first full weekend in June on Watch and Green lakes. • Gymkhanas (games on horseback) are held on the second Saturday in July and August at the grounds just west of Little Horse Lodge - follow the signage. These games are based on riding skills, horsemanship and are a lot of fun for both competitors and the spectators. • The annual Cariboo Country Night is held on the second Saturday in September. Canim Lake famous for pristine water

The sparkling waters of Canim Lake lie between rugged hills at the edge of the Fraser Plateau. From the early 1900s, resorts on the lake welcomed the rich and famous from Hollywood. More recently, it is young families and adventurous couples who come to swim, boat and picnic. The fishing and the clean water remain as they were in the early days.
Rainbow trout are caught casting from the shore in the evenings, and heavy lake trout are regularly wrestled into the boat from the deeper water. For day-trippers, the day-use Canim Beach Provincial Park on the north side of the lake has a childfriendly sheltered beach, a number of picnic tables and a wheelchair-accessible outhouse. CANIM… from page 12 The six-hectare park offers views across the lake to the Quesnel Highlands sloping upwards to the massive Cariboo Mountains. Canim Lake is one of the larger lakes in the Cariboo. The area features include Canim Falls at the east end of the lake in Wells Gray Provincial Park, and picturesque views of the surrounding mountains. For longer stays, there are excellent lakeside resorts and bed-and-breakfasts providing accommodation from recreational vehicle sites to well-furnished housekeeping cabins. Many have boat-launching facilities. Public boat launches are on the north side at Hinterland Road for skiffs, and on the south side for larger craft about four kilometres past the well-stocked Canim Lake General Store. Canim Lake is also a ìjumping-offî spot for the real backcountry, where many small, stocked lakes offer great rainbow fishing for the canoeist and light-boat user. On Highway 24, also known as the Fishing Highway, Interlakes is a vast area stretching from west of Lone Butte to Lac des Roches. It includes well-known lakes, such as Fawn, Sheridan and Bridge, and a myriad of smaller ones. The area is sparsely populated, with hundreds of trails for walking, horseback riding, hiking, birding, wildlife viewing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Lone Butte
Plenty of history at Lone Butte

Lone Butte, which is situated on Highway 24 about nine kilometres east from Highway 97, was once a town larger than 100 Mile House. Lone Butte was known as the railroad centre for the area, and hosts one of the few remaining water towers left in British Columbia, which was used during the steam-engine days. Water Tower Park is in “downtown” Lone Butte where visitors can enjoy a picnic. There is also a restored speeder shed, a children’s play area and public washrooms. Lone Butte is also home to a Cold Warera bomb shelter built in the late 1950s. It’s in the yard of Alice Singleton H e r i t a g e House (future museum) just a couple of blocks west of the water tower park. The town was named for the butte — a low, steep-sided volcanic plug — that overlooks the area. The Alice Singleton Heritage House will one day be a museum. The road up to the butte is the first left past the Horse Lake Connector. You will drive by the Lone Butte Cemetery, where many of the area’s pioneers were buried. Irish Lake sits just below the butte and has a small recreational site. There are regular craft fairs held at the community hall during the spring and summer. The Fourth Annual Lone Butte Rocks Day is on June 23, and will have local arts and crafts, garage sales, bake sales, barbecues, and entertainment throughout the town, from the community hall to the fire hall. With restaurants, a pub, a gas station, postoffice and retail outlets, Lone Butte has a lot to offer tourists as a stopping off place during their travels. Staying active is easy By Arlene Jongbloets The South Cariboo can pride itself in being a four-season playground for people of all ages. When it comes to fishing derbies, they are almost as abundant as the lakes. Horses are a trademark of the South Cariboo, and when spring and summer roll around, the 100 Mile Outriders Club is very active hosting horse shows, gymkhanas and various riding clinics. A couple of downhome gymkhanas are held on the second Saturdays in July and August at North Green Lake. Rodeos are a big draw and each new season kicks off with the Little Britches Rodeo and South Cariboo Rodeo Association BCRA Rodeo on the May long weekend.
Book time for the Bridge Lake Rodeo, on the July 1 long weekend, and the Interlakes BCRA Rodeo on the August long weekend. The annual South Cariboo Square Dance Jamboree is a highlight in mid-June. The Bighorn Bow Hunters Archery Club hosts weekly gettogethers and several 3D shoots. Rod and gun clubs are also active in Lone Butte and Forest Grove. Model airplane aficionados have the 100 Mile Model Flyers club and clubhouse at 99 Mile. Our large crystal clear lakes are perfect for tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding or swimming. Fishing is a yearround activity, with easy access to an abundance of stocked lakes. Try Mt. Timothy, a family hill just east of Lac la Hache with dry snow and groomed runs suitable for all abilities. Just south of 100 Mile House at 99 Mile, the Nordics cross-country ski club manages a huge network of groomed, rolling ski trails. The Cariboo Gold Rush Marathon in February is among the premier winter events in the South Cariboo. 108 Historic Site is the home of the Cariboo Challenge Jack Gawthorn Memorial Sled Dog Race, where four-, six- and 10-dog teams from all over North
America come to race. The South Cariboo Rec. Centre (SCRC) hosts several hockey tournaments each season, featuring everything from Initiation to high-performance divisions. For those who just want to get a little exercise, the SCRC offers public skating and drop-in hockey sessions on its long list of programs. Curling is Canada’s sport and the 100 Mile Curling Club is very active with nightly league play for all ages and the hosting of several bonspiels each year. The South Cariboo also has a network of endless trails, making snowmobiling an easy-access sport. There are several clubs in the area that host weekend rides through some of the most beautiful country around.

100 Mile House The South Cariboo provides its residents some very high-calibre entertainment. Every April, the 100 Mile Performing Arts Society presents a magnificent annual musical production. One of the top-rated entertainment events of the year is the Bankers’ Variety Show, which happens in late March or early April. Cariboo Idols, a contest, which attracts the top vocal talent each year, starts its new cycle in May. The 100 Mile Festival of the Arts takes place for two weeks in mid-April. It provides music and speech arts students an opportunity to perform on the stage at Martin Exeter Hall. Lac la Hache By Monika Paterson The quiet community of Lac la Hache is famous for being the longest town in the Cariboo, and now it’s also the home of the largest axe in British Columbia signifying Lac la Hache, The Lake of the Axe. The huge wooden axe is located in the centre of town next to the community hall. Spectacular Lac la Hache is one of the prettiest lakes in the Cariboo, and with the Fraser Plateau as a backdrop, folks can enjoy its view while driving Highway 97 along the 19 kilometres of shoreline. Located 25 km north of 100 Mile House, this friendly community offers a small convenience store and gas bar, post office, community hall and thrift store, as well as a number restaurants, motels and resorts. The annual and well-attended Garlic Festival takes place just a few km north of the town at the Felker Homestead Site. There is always lots of entertainment, food, and fun activities for everyone. There are several fishing lodges, guest ranches and resorts around the lake and
nearby surrounding areas, which offer a great stopping place to enjoy the many recreational opportunities available in the area. Just 13 km north of the town site is the Lac la Hache Provincial Park, which has 83 campsites for trailers or tents nestled in open Douglas-fir and aspen woodlands. skiing, water skiing, parasailing and especially famous for its kokanee and trophy-sized lake trout fishing, with ice-fishing equally as attractive in the winter months. Timothy Lake, which is situated just east of Lac la Hache, provides great fly-fishing even during the warmest of summer months. There are also a number of other smaller fishing holes in the area. In winter, skiers, boarders and downhill enthusiasts make their way to the Mt. Timothy Ski Area, which is situated just 24 km east of Lac la Hache. Depending on snow conditions, it’s open from late November to mid-March or early April. This family ski hill boasts a scenic chairlift ride up the 1635-metre long hill. With 35 runs, there is something for every age and ability, and it also has recreational vehicle campsites available. Lac la Hache is also a popular Nordic ski destination, sporting a 200-km cross-country ski

The South Cariboo Garlic Festival takes place Aug. 25-26 trail system, one of the longest in Canada. With the wide open rangeland spotted with many small frozen lakes, winter is also enjoyed by snowmobilers who can tour the large network of marked trails that stretch from 70 Mile House to Spout Lake (trail passes are required for the groomed trails). Folks can also experience the thrill of sled dog rides through the Cariboo countryside where the large amounts of white powder make for good conditions to try this sport out with reliable local sled dog companies. They will take you out to experience the thrill of mushing a team of energetic huskies.
