Hang glider plunges to her death

Jessica Peters Black Press The pilot in a hang gliding incident that left one woman dead near Agassiz Saturday has been charged with obstructing justice. Fifty-year-old William Johnathan Orders of Burnaby was arrested after allegations he withheld potential key evidence which might determine whether he played a role in any wrong doing, RCMP said late Monday. Just before noon on Saturday, 27-year-old Lenami Dafne Godinez fell roughly 300 metres to her death during a tandem hang gliding flight near Mt. Woodside, just west of Agassiz. The Vancouver woman was attempting her first hang-gliding flight and was harnessed to an experienced pilot. Experts in hang gliding said Saturday that they cannot recall an incident like this ever happening in the sport’s 25-year history in Canada. Kent Harrison Search and Rescue and Chilliwack Search and Rescue were called in to help find the woman’s body, which was found just as rescuers were calling off the search for the night. They had been searching for about seven hours. It isn’t clear yet what went wrong during the ride, which is considered to be a very safe outing by those who hang glide and paraglide. “This is an absolutely tragic accident, there are really no other words to describe it,” said RCMP Corporal Tammy Hollingsworth. “What exactly happened as far as why she fell is still under investigation and we are hoping the investigation will answer that question as well as other questions we all may have.”

The final leg of the Garrison Crossing “Legacy Walk” was marked with a parade and colour party from Canadian Legion Branch 280 Sunday. The walk consists of several stone cairns that describe the life and history of the former Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack. The base was closed in 1995 and redeveloped by Canada Lands into a residential neighbourhood. Six new markers have been added, each intended to honour Chilliwack’s military heritage. Parents plead for info on murdered son Robert Freeman The Progress The murder of Karver Morford got wider media attention last week after RCMP investigators held a news conference in Surrey. RCMP Sgt. Jennifer Pound said investigators now have “a group of persons of interest” in the case, but more information is needed before charges can be laid. “We need specific evidence that would move us forward to making arrests and laying charges,” she said. “We believe Karver was targeted
(but) the reason he was targeted, we still need to find that out.” Unlike many murder victims, Morford, 35, had no links to drugs or criminal activity. He suffered from epilepsy and kept to himself living in a remote location in Ryder Lake. “Karver was truly an innocent victim,” Pound said, and what led up to his death in November, 2010 is a mystery. “What could have possibly prefaced this homicide?” she asked. “That’s why we need for people to come forward and shed some light on this.”
It’s also a mystery to Karver’s parents, Jim and Judy, who first told their story to The Progress in September last year. “Why someone chose him, at that time, in that place, is incomprehensible to us all,” Judy said in a statement to the media last week. “Our only hope is that there really is no perfect murder, and that this is not the one to break the mold,” she said. “We are sure that someone out there knows something about this heinous crime that took the life of our son, and that person needs to do the right thing and get the

burden of knowledge and guilt off their chests and into the hands of the investigating team.” It was Karver’s father, Jim, who found his son’s body on Monday, Nov. 8 inside the rustic Ryder Lake house. Judy had seen Karver just two days earlier on Saturday, Nov. 6. Sometime in between, someone made their way up the kilometre-long driveway, which was not much more than a rutted and overgrown pathway, to the house where Karver’s blue and grey Ford 250 pickup was parked outside. Falls golf resort to be ‘resurrected,’ says Aquilini Robert Freeman The Progress The Aquilini Investment Group intends to continue residential development around The Falls golf resort and to “resurrect” the golf course it was built around. “Our vision is to create a small Master Planned Community that encompasses larger lots with less density at an affordable price,” Aquilini officials said in a brief statement. “We would also like to resurrect the golf course and create smaller pockets of retail.” Acting Chilliwack Mayor Chuck Stam said it’s “great news” that Aquilini has stepped into the resort’s troubled financial picture, but it’s too early to say whether the company’s vision fits into the City’s
plans for the Eastern Hillsides, which are still in draft form. One question is how to pay for servicing and infrastructure costs when the area hits the new 4,000 population “trigger” for “optimal” community-building. City planners said in the draft plan that to increase the area’s “build-out capacity” beyond 4,000 to 6,000 (close to 900 more dwellings) that “the off-site infrastructure and interconnecting road improvement costs ... will jump by $27 million.” Even if that cost is included in development cost charges (DCCs), the planners said, “the slow absorption rate” of the hillside housing market could extend the project beyond 30 years and ultimately hit taxpayers’ pocketbooks.
“The interest payment for 30-plus years is an unreasonable burden on the first generation of Eastern Hillsides residents, and a high investment risk — if the anticipated larger market (from 4,000 to 6,000) does not materialize,” the planners said. The estimated $27 million in additional costs is also a low-ball figure, and there are other onsite costs, including more intensive site engineering in the hillside area, that could eventually wind up on the City’s plate. “There is no mechanism to ensure that the City will not be paying the shortfall, or that the private sector has the ability to absorb the cost increase,” planners said. Stam said city staff are currently in “conversations” with Aquilini
officials, so he could not add further details at this time. “But it’s great news to have the calibre of development team that Aquilini has, for them to step in and take over the golf course and real estate interests,” he said. “We can’t let a crown jewel like The Falls fall into disrepair,” he said. Michael Thornton, Silver Falls Development Inc. president, told The Progress last week that as the largest single creditor in the bankruptcy process at The Falls, he had decided to foreclose and to join Aquilini in a “team effort” to save the resort. The health of the golf course, a par 71 championship course, is seen as key to surrounding property values of residents who
bought into the resort expecting it to continue as a premiere golf destination. The resort is located on about 233 acres, 162 acres for the golf course and 71 acres for residential and related development. Before bankruptcy proceedings started last year, the resort had residential space available for 3,000 units and about one million square feet for commercial and recreational development. The population of the eastern hillside area currently stands at about 900 people. Last October, the city chopped the area’s buildout potential by 60 per cent to 4,000 people in about 1,700 homes from the earlier target of 17,000 people in 5,200 homes. rfreeman@theprogress.com

veggies for their own families, and for the Salvation Army Food Bank. “At its peak on Saturday there were about 175 people at the event,” said Alanna Clempson, PARGAR coordinator of Food Matters Chilliwack. Everyone who registered was given seeds for a wide range of vegetables, greens and flowers, as well as early and mid season potatoes. There was also planting tips
and a FAQ sheet tucked in, as well as a copy of Farm Folk, City Folk, full of recipes and an edible flower chart. Gardening experts Jack Kouwenhoven and Brian Minter captivated participants during their sessions at the Sunshine Community Garden site. A total of seven drop-off events are planned for the summer for participants to bring the veggies they wish to donate to
the food bank. The first dropoff is July 14 at the community garden behind the Mathieson Centre. Once again the host chair is empty for the Chilliwack Christmas Parade. StarFM has told city officials that it won’t be organizing the downtown parade for 2012. The local radio station took on the hosting duties for the first time last year after a successful request for proposals (RFP) bid. Downtown Chilliwack BIA coordinated the popular Santa parade from 1999 to 2010, funded under the Community Development Initiatives program. Council will vote on whether to issue a new RFP on Tuesday, according to a staff report in the council agenda package. “Although StarFM hosted a very successful event in 2011, they informed the City in early 2012 that they would not be hosting the 2012 event citing that it is challenging to dedicate the financial and staff resources needed while still operating a business,” reads the staff report. “In addition to the City funding, StarFM invested approximately an additional $8,000 in cash and contra services and needed to mobilize most of their staff on event day.” Coun. Chuck Stam said the news is “confirmation” of what they had been told by BIA officials for years, that the parade coordination was a huge undertaking. The city councillor described the Christmas parade as a “heritage event” for Chilliwack. “It kicks off the Christmas season for the community, and gathers everyone together.” Stam is optimistic given the community service oriented nature of Chilliwack in general. “It’s a lot of work, but most events of that nature are,” he said. “It’s also an opportunity.” In past years, the city contributed about $7,000 annually in CDI funding to support the parade.

Exclamations of oohs and ahhs filled Sardis secondary’s greenhouse with all the wide-eyed wonderment and excitement you’d expect from a group of eight-year-olds in the face of tiny mites, wasps, and beetles. With magnifying glasses in hand, the young students peered into the petrie dishes as they listened to their older counterparts explain the importance of such bugs. “They’re beneficials,” said Grade 12 student Megan Voth. “They’re the good bugs we need to keep the bad bugs away.” A chorus of “whoas,” and “that’s so cool,” gave Voth the encouragement she needed to continue the lesson. Sardis secondary’s agriculture program recently invited about 300 Grade 3 students from elementary schools across the district to come to the high school over a two-day span and learn about growing plants, greenhouses, pond habitats, pest man-

agement, and raising chickens – all things included in Sardis’ agriculture curriculum. It was the first time the class has offered such a tour. Teacher Tania Toth said it was a no-brainer to organize the event. For one thing, her students are able to show off their knowledge, and further instill it in their brains. But also, the younger Grade 3 students have been learning about the plant system all year as
part of the Grade 3 curriculum. “This allows our students to teach the things their learning in agriculture, and to encourage other kids to learn about it too,” said Toth. On the tour, there were four stations set up: the greenhouse, the chicken barn, the planting station and integrated pest management. Students learned how to plant marigolds and pansies; they learned about the ben-

efits of certain insects; about why greenhouses aren’t actually green; and about silky chickens. They even got to see a real, dead, blackskinned silky chicken. And while agriculture can be filled with tongue-twisting, mind-boggling scientific terms that would fly over most adults’ heads, let alone an eight-year-old’s, the agriculture students had that covered. “We use a lot of easy words and props to explain things,” said Grade 11 student Ty Kirk. For example, in the greenhouse students were shown a diseased plant, which led into a lesson on how good bugs like ladybugs fight off bad bugs like aphids that can kill plants. The older students also knew that enthusiasm and excitement can go along way with education. Practically bouncing on the spot at the plant station, with a huge smile on her face, Grade 12 student Kali Clayton fired off question after question to the younger students before her. This day was meant for Clayton. “Ohmygod, I love it,” she said. “I love teaching kids anything.” And what elementary kid doesn’t want to learn from the cool high school students?

Last week’s Alberta election results can be interpreted in numerous ways, but a few overarching messages sent by voters in our neighbouring province are pretty obvious. One is that the election results are determined by voters, not pollsters and media pundits. Most pundits and pollsters were predicting a Wild Rose Party win. Instead, the ruling Progressive Conservatives won a comfortable majority of seats. It is obvious that most voters were not stampeded by the polls, and in fact most polls had suggested that there were a large number of undecided voters, even in the last week of the campaign. Many of them clearly chose to go with the party they were familiar with, as opposed to a new and untried approach to governing. Another message is that Albertans are a mixed group of people, and are not quite the one-size-fits-all rednecks that they are often portrayed as. This also highlights the fact that Albertans have some of the same concerns that their B.C. neighbours do. Yes, the oil industry is the dominant factor in Alberta’s economy and political life, but many Albertans have serious concerns about some aspects of the oil and gas industry. A third message is that candidates who make off-the-wall comments can do a lot of damage to a party brand. Two Wild Rose candidates made comments that at the very least angered a large number of people, and those comments were pondered by many potential voters. In the end, they cost the party votes. The BC Liberals may be hoping that B.C. voters will offer them the vindication the PCs in Alberta received. While that is not impossible, the Liberals here have a much steeper hill to climb. They are much further behind in the polls than the Alberta PCs were, and they are facing two opposition parties with significant voter support. In addition, they have lots of baggage, which many voters have grievances with. B.C. politics is also much more of a hardball match than in Alberta. After all, the prairie province has only changed governing parties three times in 107 years. ~ Black Press

Flexibility opens door to year-round schooling Last week Education Minister George Abbott introduced Bill 36, the School Amendment Act 2012, to give students increased choices in educational programs. The Bill proposes to extend the ability for students to take a mix of online and traditional school courses from kindergarten to Grade 9 (Grades 10-12 already have this option). The Bill also proposes to eliminate the standard school calendar to allow more creative scheduling. It’s about time. “Enabling greater flexibility and choice is a key component of BC’s Education Plan, and these amendments to the School Act will provide school districts with additional tools to support personalized learning,” said Abbott. Unshackling the traditional school calendar opens up opportunities to consider all the advantages of year-round schooling, a system that has been in place for

decades in many other regions across North America. Year-round schooling is nothing new. Children of relatives of ours in California were enjoying year round schooling in the 1980s and loving it. Just ten years ago, there were over 2.3 million U.S. grade school students attending year-round schools in the 2002-2003 year. ventional school year but they are scheduled more evenly so that the momentum of learning is ongoing with just enough time out to get refreshed. The roots for the current, somewhat antiquated, school year go back to our agricultural heritage when children were needed in the fields during the summer to help with harvest and farm chores. Today, agricultural needs shouldn’t be the driver of a child’s educational needs. Contemporary reality dictates change. “These changes provide greater autonomy, flexibility and recognize school boards as partners in education,” said Laurae McNally, chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “Every school district has unique needs and challenges, and these amendments mean we’ll be able to provide greater flexibility and choice – and that means more options for students.” The flexibility factor will allow
all students with their unique ways of learning coupled with their strengths and weaknesses to function more successfully in a more fluid time schedule that allows for both classical instruction as well as online learning. Of course, the shift to an alternate system won’t be fast. It’s scheduled for the 2013-2014 school year. And there’ll be some pushback. Those supporting it will see the value of school facilities being used year-round, students being engaged in learning in a more balanced year, and more students being accommodated in one school through multi-tracking if school hours are extended. While giving up that two-month summer break might be a hard sell, the long summer holiday often results in students forgetting information and need time for revision in the new semester. Shortening the summer break will eliminate a lot

muddy, polluted water into a clean fish bearing stream, will make that stream muddy and polluted. It’s that simple. Much has been made of the impacts of species at risk protection on local farms. This is a red herring (a species that seems to be exceptionally common locally). Salish sucker and Oregon spotted frog habitats support salmon and trout as well. The habitats in question are as much a part of our food security as a corn crop. Ask any First Nation or commercial/ recreational fisher. Finally, I notice that there was no support voiced for the protesting farmers by their producers associations or the BC Agricultural Council. Dairy and other supply managed agricultural sectors are nervously eyeing the demise of the Canadian Wheat Board. They understand that the best defence of their marketing systems is a supportive public, and that an informed public is not going to support the status quo on many farms. Prom night unaffected by job action at CSS I just saw the article in the Progress about the prom and graduation ceremonies. I can only speak for CSS grads but I will tell you this has been discussed at PAC meetings. Commencement ceremonies will go ahead
using administration and parent volunteers. As far as the prom goes, again only speaking for CSS, other than one teacher to oversee things the prom is a gift from the parents and has nothing to do with the school. All com-
mittees are made up of parents and all planning, decorating and fund raising etc. is done by the parents. The same goes for dry grad. Parents from all three senior high schools get together and with volunteer help from

Tycrop to hold community meeting in Rosedale There has been a lot of speculation about the future expansion of Tycrop in the Rosedale area. We have been a part of this community as a respected employer for over 34 years and are looking forward to working with our neighbours for many more years to come. We are currently exploring options on how to expand our business but, as yet, have not committed to any action. Because we have been neigh-
bours for 34 years, we want to have an open discussion about our plans. We want to ensure the community has access to up-to-date accurate information so we are creating an on-line community forum, www. rosedalecommunity.ca, where residents can access our plans, ask questions and provide feedback. We hope to have that site up and running the first week in May. We will also be hosting a neighbourhood meeting near the end
of May so we can share and discuss any new information about our plans. We will be inviting our neighbours to the meeting as soon as we have set a date and location. is invasive grasses overgrowing ditches and streams and impeding flow. Why is the grass overgrowing the ditch? Could it have anything to do with lack of shade from vegetation, or over-fertilization, or soil eroding into watercourses? Of course it does. The first step farmers need to take to improve their drainage is to get the negligent operators among them to clean up their act. Establishing buffer strips of native vegetation along all watercourses, as recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture, would go a long way to mitigating impacts. Much has been made of the fact that fish inhabit dug ditches and the claim that these areas should not be considered fish habitat. But if you dig a ditch and salmon move into it - it is salmon habitat, by definition. Just as when you plant a maple tree in your backyard and a robin builds a nest in it - it is robin habitat. Streams and ditches are inseparably connected by the water that flows through them. Ditches must be treated and protected as habitat, because a ditch – even one without fish – that spews

The handful of local farmers that protested Fisheries regulations in Vancouver last week need a reality check. Most farmers are good stewards of the land, or have recognized the impacts their operations are having and are working hard to reduce them. A distressing number, however, seem to feel entitled to degrade public water and fisheries resources for their own gain. People whose work takes them to many farms across the Valley (as mine does) will tell you that they see serious environmental problems on a daily basis: manure and milk-house waste running into waterways, livestock trampling spawning beds, clearing of the last remaining trees and shrubs along watercourses for an extra row of corn, manure spreading in winter or over top of waterways, herbicide use in the water. The list goes on. It is true that much of the land around Agassiz is difficult to drain. It is also true that it would be a lot easier to drain it if farm practices were improved. The central issue

School district tightens agenda policy Katie Bartel The Progress Regular attendees of Chilliwack school district’s public board meetings got a surprise last Tuesday morning when they still hadn’t seen the meeting’s agenda posted on the district’s website. “I waited for it,” said CTA president Katharin Midzain. In her five years of attending the meetings, Midzain said this is the first time she hasn’t seen the agenda posted the Friday prior to the meeting. She thought it was due to the busy nature of district officials. But that was not the case. With no advance notice or reasoning, the school district’s senior executive team decided to change its practice in how agendas would be distributed prior to public meetings.
Instead of posting them online the Friday before the meeting, which has been common practice for several years, the agendas will now be posted the day of the meetings. District superintendent Michael Audet told The Progress that the information in agenda packages should go to trustees first before the public starts talking about the information inside them. Typically trustees receive the package on the Friday before a meeting. “Trustees have made it very clear to us that they would like as much information prior to the meeting as possible to give them time to read through the information and think about the information provided before the board meeting,” said Audet. Audet said the decision was made after an article was published
Schools adopt social media policy Social media guidelines have been added to Chilliwack school district’s code of conduct and student behaviour policies. Because technology has become prevalent in the Chilliwack school community with learning and online networking amongst students, teachers, and other school staff, it was determined a social media addition to the policies was required. The new policy now states that the use of social media for information sharing, discussion, and other such communication is an extension of the classroom. All students, staff, parents and anyone else involved in the school community are expected to show the same respect online that is expected of them on school property. Violation of these principles will warrant intervention and/or disciplinary action. The Progress If you’ve ever shopped at a farmers’ market, you might have already tried some produce grown by organic farmers at the Yarrow Ecovillage Community Farm. Now the farmers need to build a barn this summer to store their tractor, pack organic greens, and hold barn dances. It’s their next big project and they’re reaching out to Chilliwack and beyond for a little assistance. “We need your help to launch our next big project — a barn raising!� said farm manager Tamara Bonnemaison. She and husband Joel Skrepnek own Osprey Organic Farm. They have been farming organically for five years, and moved to the ecovillage last year. In the old days a community would often come together for a frantic weekend to build a barn. Now it’s being attempted with a warm invitation to the larger community to get involved in the project in a novel way, before the construction even starts. The community farm has been transformed into a local hub of sustainable food, attracting people who want to celebrate and learn more about how it’s done. “The whole idea of the community farm is bringing people together.� So they launched a crowd funding campaign this month with Peerbackers.com to build their barn. With the element of community-building so crucial

to them, the crowd funding model was seen as a good match for the ecovillage farmers. “We have only 45 days to raise $30,000 from many small donations,� Bonnemaison says.
So far they have raised more than $2,600. The funds will pay for a post-and-beam barn kit, which comes with pre-cut lumber and pre-drilled holes for screws. The campaign runs

Scottish hospitality harnessed to help community services Chilliwack Community Services’ gala ‘Salute to Spring’ this Saturday Chilliwack Community Services is inviting people to welcome spring in Scottish style this Saturday – and help local children and their families at the same time. The agency, which has helped make Chilliwack be a more caring place since 1928, is hosting its 20th annual Gala Fundraising Dinner at the Coast Hotel on May 5. Proceeds from this “Scottish Salute to Spring” will go towards CCS’s early years programs. It’s a black tie affair, but kilts are more than welcome. The evening will feature a special meal prepared by the Coast’s award-winning chef Tony Heesterman. Local business featured at Eco Fashion Week An inside look into former journalist turned jewelry importer Ashley Wray’s experience with her first fashion runway. Ashley Wray Special to The Progress Vancouver Eco Fashion Week was a rush – a fashionable rush. For three days my fiancé and I attended educational seminars providing simple tips on sustainable living, and watched international and local designers showcase their collections on the catwalk. But the biggest rush was taking part in our first runway show – being backstage, dressing our models, and then walking out onto the runway to a standing-room only audience, all cheering with applause. Eco Fashion Week, which was held over two days last month at the University of British Columbia’s Robson Square, promotes innovative ways to lead a sustainable lifestyle, starting with environmentally friendly fashion. My fiancé – and business partner – Matt Bateman and I were proud to be a part of the show with our business Mala Imports, featuring jewelry that is handmade in Bali, Indonesia by Aum Rudraksha Designs. Our necklaces and bracelets, which are made from a combination of rudraksha beads and gemstones, fit Eco Fashion Week’s mandate perfectly. The rudraksha beads, which are a symbol of compassion for humanity, grow inside of what look like blueberries, and are sustainably harvested on trees in South East Asia. The gemstones are associated with different healing qualities, from turquoise, which is believed to increase love and destroy hatred, to jasper, which provides balance and harmony. As well, Aum Rudraksha Designs is fairly traded and ethically produced. For the runway show, we paired our jewelry with swimwear from La Isla, a California-based line that designs bathing suits made from Italian and Spanish fabrics and features exquisite handembroidered details. Keep in mind, the fashion show was located in a partially covered outdoor runway in early April when the temperatures were still rather chilly – can you imagine the state of our models? Not only were they freezing, but their breath could be seen as they strutted down the catwalk. Needless to say, backstage was hectic. Models were everywhere, hair and makeup teams were constantly rushing out from behind curtains, music was blaring, and our runway coach was trying to keep the models warm with energetic dance moves, and hot thoughts, like sitting on a beach

The whirlwind didn’t end there – we were immediately ushered to a media lounge to pose with our models and give TV interviews. Abbott said the standard school calendar is a relic of an agrarian society where children did farm work in summer. A two-month summer break can result in setbacks for student learning, especially those who are struggling to keep up, he
said. Abbott cited Kanaka Creek elementar y school in Maple Ridge, which uses a modified calendar with shorter breaks through the year instead of the standard September-to-June model. That has been popular with students, parents and teachers, and academic results have been encouraging, Abbott said. “What we now have is a pretty strong case
that children learn better when they don’t have a long summer break, that a shorter period when they’re away from school is better,” Abbott said. Online courses are currently only allowed for grades nine and up. The amendments allow the option for any course in elementary or middle school. Abbott said that change is not designed to encourage home
schooling, but rather to offer options to students that aren’t available in smaller schools. Online learning has taken off in B.C., from 5,000 students using it five years ago to about 30,000 today, he said. School districts will have to hold consultations with the public and staff before changing the school calendar, and the ministry has to approve changes before they can take effect.

Six-week health challenge launches in Chilliwack The 1st Annual Get Fit Chilliwack Challenge will launch on May 22 at 6:30 pm at the University of Fraser Valley Human Performance Centre. This six-week challenge, put on by Ascend Fitness Coaching, will raise funds for the Chilliwack Hospital and Health Care Foundation (CHHCF). The CHHCF is a new charitable foundation based in Chilliwack with the goal to improve the health of resident in the region. In support of the goals of the
CHHCF, the Get Fit Chilliwack Challenge aims to inspire and motivate Chilliwack residents to embrace the fitness lifestyle, and a simple and fun way. Local fitness coach and owner of Ascend Fitness coaching Tanja Shaw says that a little friendly competition, and the support of a group, is a great way to get motivated to improve your health. “The Get Fit Chilliwack Challenge is the perfect opportunity for people to really focus on their health. Participants
will spend the six weeks following a workout program, building healthy habits, learning about health and fitness, and achieving goals with the support of a group and experienced fitness coaches.” The Get Fit Chilliwack Challenge is for all fitness levels. Beginner programs will cater to anyone who has not exercised regularly in the past few months. Intermediate and advanced programs will challenge participants to improve their current fitness level.

Chilliwack’s midget AAA baseball Cougars hit the road last weekend for their annual Interior double-double trip. Chilliwack played the Kamloops River Dogs Saturday, splitting a pair of games. The Cougars coughed up six first inning runs in the morning match. A late rally made the final score more respectable at 7-4. Shor tstop Mike Rogers punched out three hits, including a double and a triple. Cody Hartle drove in a pair of runs. Cohen Bogart added a double and Derek Reidiger and Blake Peeling added singles. Chilliwack exacted revenge in the rematch, riding the bats to a 13-8 win. The Cougars scored six in the third inning and had 18 hits overall. Outfielder Ryan Petkau went three for five. Cam Longfellow legged out a triple and
Payton Nerbas clubbed a double. Reidiger started on the mound, allowing four hits and two runs over three and two-third innings, while striking out two. Chilliwack’s second double header had them in Penticton Sunday, facing the South Okanagan Tigers. Mike Rogers threw a complete game two hitter in the opener as the Cougars took a 5-1 final. Rogers chipped in offensively as well, going two for three at the plate. Reidiger, Keegan Mclean and Evan Kellington all had doubles. Chilliwack finished the weekend with an 11-3 win. Star ter Peeling allowed three runs in five innings before handing the ball to Matt Lamb, who was spotless in relief. Mclean had the big hit with a two run homerun.
Trip of a lifetime for Chilliwack soccer stars
“All I can hear is the roar of the crowd. Was this a dream?”
That’s what went through Davis Hanson’s head as he sat in the stands at Elland Road Stadium. Within minutes, Leeds United would take on Derby in a Champions League soccer match. But before the teams had even taken the field, 24,000 fans were on their feet, chanting and singing their hearts out. “It was a dream come true for any football
(soccer) loving boy,” Hanson said. That was his third day in England. Hanson and a group of Chilliwack FC U-13 metro boys travelled across the pond for a week of training with the Leeds United Association Football Club. Before the big game, Hanson and his crew toured the stadium. They also toured Thorp
Arch, the training and academy home of Leeds United. Located in the village of Thorp Arch near the town of Wetherby, the 12.1 hectare sight contained the most beautiful soccer pitch Hanson had ever seen. “One of their retired players, Steve Holmes, led the tour,” he recalled. “And our team even got to train on their astro turf pitch, a huge hon-
our for any soccer fan.” The Chilliwack players stayed at the Malsis Private School, located a short drive from Skipton and just south of Yorkshire Dales. Hanson painted an idyllic picture of a castlelike building sitting amidst 40 acres of lush countryside. “Every few days we’d have an excursion,” he said. “We explored the streets of ancient vil-
lages, and went sightseeing out on the countryside. We went to the British train museum and afterword visited the Minister, a huge castle complete with statues, dungeons and a treasure room.” But the main purpose of the trip was training and living the life of a professional soccer player. In that regard, the Chilliwack visitors were treated just as
any other Leeds United player would be. They worked hard. “A typical day of training consisted of three hour-and-a-half training sessions, with 20 minute intervals,” Hanson said. “After these outdoor sessions we went inside and did a classroom session, to recap all we had learned and how it applied in professional games. I loved every minute of it.”
The Junior Cascades will be holding an elementary basketball camp for boys in Grades 5-7 over two days at Sardis secondary school. Day one is May 4, running from 6 to 8 p.m. and day two is May 5, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost of the camp will be $40. The Chilliwack National BMX race returns to Heritage Park May 11-13, with Canada’s top amateur competitors tearing up the track. Riders as young as three years old and as old as 63 will be participating. The annual event is free for spectators, with action starting at 6:30 p.m. on day one, 11:30 a.m. on day two and 9 a.m. on day three.
Strong start The Fraser Valley Dragonboat Club’s Crusaders competed in their first 2012 regatta in Deep Cove last weekend, scoring silver in the mixed B division. The Crusaders posted a best time of 52 seconds. They clocked 54, 54 and 56 seconds in three other races to announce their return to the competitive divisions. June 23, 1930 - April 25, 2012 Bob died peacefully in his home in Mission. He was surrounded by family. Bob served in CAMPSALL the Canadian Armed Forces for over 20 years. He then worked for Sunnyhill Children’s Hospital and Parkholm Lodge before retiring to the world of golf. Bob was devoted to his family and friends. He loved working around the home and beachcombing in Hawaii. He mentored many people in AA. He was a man of great integrity and courage, with a great sense of humour and he will be terribly missed. He is survived by his parents, Doug and Muriel Delong; three brothers, Gordon and wife Dorothy; Brian and wife, Janice; and Howard and his wife Mary. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. You left this world too early in life and will be missed greatly by all who knew you. Celebration of life was held on Saturday, April 28, 2012. I would like to thank everyone for all the love and support throughout this difficult time.

Louise Ness born on May 12, 1923 in Russia passed away on April 26, 2012 in Vernon, B.C. at 88 NESS years of age. Louise was the last remaining child of twelve born to Peter and Susan Neuman. Louise is survived by her four children: Larry of Agassiz, Brian of Vernon, Judy (Dudley) Agassiz of Salmon Arm and Tim of Waskatenau, AB. Louise’s eight grandchildren are Louis and Kevin Agassiz, Julie Ness, Lynette and Kevin Berry, Anna Ness, Emily and Alissa Ness, and one greatgrandchild Braeden Brown. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Marion Newman of Chilliwack. She was predeceased by her loving husband Herbert Ness in 1999 and by her beloved daughter-in-law Karen Ness in 2011. It was Louise’s wish to return to Chilliwack where she spent many happy years with family and friends. She will rest in peace with her husband. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday May 2nd, 2012 at 10:30 am from the Chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home at 45901 Victoria Ave., Chilliwack, B.C.
