“The war on drugs isn’t effective,” said Parksville mayor Chris Burger in light of Vancouver Island municipal politician’s support for decriminalizing marijuana. “We had quite a debate and a fair majority voted to decriminalize it,” he reported after the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) conference April 13 to 15 in Uclulet. The resolution, proposed by Metchosin, states that “whereas marijuana prohibition is a failed policy which has cost millions of dollars in police, court, jail and social costs,” and decriminalization would provide tax revenue, the AVICC will “lobby the appropriate government to decriminalize marijuana and research the regulation and taxation of marijuana.” Burger said it was the taxation issue that really caught the attention of cash strapped municipalities who would rather regulate and make money off it than spend money policing it. The resolution was supported by 75 per cent of the 240 municipal delegates in attendance from across the Island and Sunshine Coast. See DRUG WAR, page A7

The salmon that have been hand fed by dedicated volunteers over the last five weeks are about to be released from their net pens at the Deep Bay Marina.
Every two hours during the day a group of Nile Creek Enhancement Society (NCES) volunteers have been feeding salmon that were hatched at the Nile Creek hatchery in Bowser. On Wednesday the fish will be released and the pink salmon will return in the fall.

When Tom Plensky called Deep Bay Fire Chief George Lenz to the front of the room Thursday night, he had a lot to say, but his essential message was simple. “You are one of our heroes,” he said. The comment came as Plensky presented Lenz with the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal at the Deep Bay Improvement District annual general meeting at the Vancouver Island University Shellfish Research Station. The medal was presented on behalf of the
Governor General of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston and was first created in 1985 to honour fire service members who have given 20 years of service, at least 10 of which were in the performance of duties involving potential risk. Since coming on board with the fire department 20 years ago, Lenz has seen many volunteers come and go and it’s not surprising. Firefighting is a challenging job, both physically and mentally, with call-outs at all hours of the day or night. See DEEP BAY, page A4

When the Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department held a head shave to raise money for cancer research on Sunday, it was not only a community event, but also a family affair. That was certainly the case with deputy fire chief Dan Francoeur, who spent some quality time under the shears with his firefighter sons Kurtis and Darren. Some 34 heads were shaved raising over $4,100 as of Monday, with many hundred still expected to trickle in. People can still donate at the fire hall or the Canadian Cancer Society office in Qualicum Beach to the Dashwood account.

When the previous, much loved Fire Chief passed away unexpectedly in 2010, George stepped in and guided his team through the difficult mourning period. His personal commitment to his team and the department resulted in continuous exemplary fire and rescue service to the community. As he accepted the award Thursday night, Lenz also had a very simple message. “I don’t know which side these things are supposed to go, but I’m pinning it next to my heart,” he said.

Most volunteers last only four or five years, but Lenz stayed on and has held officer roles for over 10 years. He is still often the first person at the hall for a call-out. Even before he was made chief, Lenze was an advocate for the department and the community. He has been an active recruiter of new members, and even now, as chief, often calls on new residents to encourage involvement. The experience and continuity that Lenz brings to the department has proven invaluable. Not only does he know all the fire systems inside and out, he also knows the community and all the different or difficult access

Stepping in where police leave off Local Victim Services team makes sure people are not left alone to deal with their trauma

he tales of crime and punishment meted out by local newspapers and TV only tell part of the story. There is also another side — that of the victims, family and even witnesses — that often gets lost in the newsroom shuffle. That aspect isn’t lost on Lynda Ewert and her team though. The Oceanside RCMP Victim Services program manager is well aware that the case isn’t necessarily closed when the bad guy goes behind bars. There are other ramifications left behind among the victims and witnesses to crime that sometimes need to be addressed. Issues such as children traumatized by a frightening incident, or a senior whose caregiver has suddenly died, leaving them very much alone. “We are not counsellors, but rather immediate trauma support workers,” Ewert said. “We are trained to help people who need emotional support in the aftermath of a crime. We have all different types of crimes, accident and emergencies and we offer crisis intervention
24/7. We followup with long-term support — emotional, practical support, referring people to local resources and updating victims when they have a file with an investigator. We also do court support. You name it, we do it.” Oceanside RCMP Victim Services is supported by two professional coordinators and three trained volunteers who are dedicated to responding to needs of victims of crime. The significant contribution provided by Ewert and her team generally flies under the public radar, but the police know all about how valuable it is. “We simply could not properly serve the Oceanside community without these wonderful staff and volunteers,” said Oceanside RCMP Staff Sergeant Brian Hunter. “Supporting victims of crime and trauma is a difficult and sometimes thankless endeavour. I’m so proud of the team we have here.” The comments came as the Oceanside RCMP detachment marked the seventh annual National Victims of Crime Awareness Week, running from April 22 to 28. It’s not always a crime scene that leads to a call from Ewert. “We do a lot of sudden deaths in this area, because there are so many elderly people here,” she said. “It could be the partner of an elderly person or their caregiver who has passed away and we have to figure out how to take care of this person. A lot of people here come out from Alberta and don’t have someone locally available.” It is the members of the Victim Services program who stay behind after a police officer has made that fateful

knock on the door to inform someone that their next of kin has been killed in a car crash. “The police tell the family their loved one has passed away, but we are the ones who stay there to support them so the police can go about and do their job,” she said. “We followup and give people information about what is going to happen now — what they have to do, such as contact the coroner or contact the funeral home.” Those are tough calls, she admits, but it’s the call that involves a young person that really puts her heart to the test. “We’ve had some baby deaths and anywhere there are children involved it’s very, very hard,” she said. “We have learned how to make sure we debrief with one another. It’s all about self-care. You can’t have a lot
of other stress in your life.” Despite that stress, Ewert said she loves being able to help people who really need it. “When we do callouts, people say, ‘we didn’t even know you guys existed, but we are so glad you are here,’” she said. “That’s the best part of the job, being able to support people when they are at their lowest.” Although the staff at Victim Services are the most visible of a fairly invisible support system for police, there are others as well, including civilian staff and volunteers For more information or to access victim support services, call 250-9542277 or contact VictimLINK, a provincial toll-free victim support line at 1-800563-0808.

If the French Creek Pollution Control Centre’s pump stations are ever forced to release untreated effluent into the Salish Sea, Regional District of Nanaimo engineers want to make sure people don’t get sick from eating contaminated shellfish. In a report to the RDN board’s committee of the whole meeting last week, wastewater program co-ordinator Ellen Hausman said the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program wants to implement a conditional management plan (CMP) for shellfish harvesting for beaches within 6.5 kilometres of the French Creek facility. The plans would allow the area to remain open for shellfish harvesting where intermittent or temporary sources of pollution can occur, as long as the pollution source is not present. The plan would identify what events would trigger a temporary closure of the area and would identify the roles of various agencies in such an event. In the Pacific region, there are currently four CMPs in place. Three of these cover harvest areas located near wastewater treatment facilities in Ladysmith, Chemainus and Crofton with the aim of managing
the potential risk of the release of wastewater materials from treatment facilities. The fourth CMP applies to shellfish harvesting in Baynes Sound, where water quality can be impacted by high rainfall. The Bay Avenue and Hall Road pump stations which feed into the French Creek facility are both located near the foreshore and were designed with a bypass to allow the discharge of untreated wastewater into the marine environment when the volume of wastewater exceeds their capacity. Although these bypasses have been in place since the 1970s, there have been no reported discharges from them. Currently, there is a shellfish harvesting ban within 300 metres of each bypass. The CMP would classify shellfish harvesting beyond this point to the 6.5 kilometre limit as conditionally approved. Speaking to the issue, RDN deputy chair Diane Brennan questioned the process for alerting shellfish harvesters in the event of a spill. Department of Fisheries and Oceans representative Alecia Gordon replied that the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) would be alerted, along with the DFO radio room. “There’s a big fan-out from there,” she said. “The DFO would

notify processors and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, who would notify First Nations and so on.” In the unlikely event of a sewage spill, she said, shellfish harvesting within the CMP would be prohibited for seven days. If it remained contaminated after that time, harvesting would be closed for an additional 21 days. The district directors voted unanimously to approve the measure.

A proposal to investigate the potential of geothermal energy being used to heat the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre and neighbouring Ravensong Aquatic Centre got the go ahead from the Regional District of Nanaimo board this week. The proposal, contained in a letter from Qualicum Beach planner Luke Sales, was dependent upon the Town of Qualicum Beach being successful in its application for a grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Green Municipal Fund. Sales noted both facilities are located close to a redundant water main along Jones Street that has been identified as a potential source of ground temperature water for heating using heat pump
technology. The water main could be used to circulate water from the nearby water distribution reservoir, through an isolating heat exchanger and back into the water distribution mains. The feasibility study has been estimated at $30,250. However, the FCM grant, if successful, would pay half of that cost, leaving the Town of Qualicum Beach and the Regional District of Nanaimo to pay a maximum of $6,025 each. “If implemented, the proposed Jones Street District Energy system could offer significant benefits for the Ravensong Aquatic Centre through greenhouse gas reduction and cost savings,” Sales said in his letter. At Tuesday night’s regular RDN meeting, chief administrative officer Carol Mason noted the district recently completed a major, $5 million renovation of the aquatic cen-
tre and there is no funding specifically earmarked for such a project. However, she suggested that if the board wanted to take part, that any contribution come from the sustainability reserve fund. “Getting a feasibility study completed would enable us to plan for the future, but we would not be able to do it without additional cost,” Mason said. In response, Parksville alternate director Chris Burger moved that the board get on board the project by releasing the funds required to get the study completed. This was seconded by Qualicum Beach director Dave Willie. “We want to ascertain what the payback will look like,” Willie said, noting some of the work done during the Ravensong renovation specifically allowed for a project such as this to be done in the future. The board approved the move.
Local ASAR team called in to assist Comox search Members of Arrowsmith Search and Rescue scrambled to help their colleagues in Comox search for a missing woman on Mount Washington last week. Local ASAR volunteer Joe Kinch led a team of two horse-searchers, a water rescue team and one ground searcher in a two-day effort to find
75-year-old Shirley Burstall. The Saanich resident was last seen at a Ladysmith gas station on April 5. Her vehicle was found Monday was found on a logging road at the base of the mountain, parking an intensive search. Kinch said conditions were difficult for the searchers, with rough
terrain and pouring rain. “We got soaked out there,” he said. “We covered just over 19 kilometres. The woman was found within a kilometre of the car, but we were on the other side of the highway.” The identity of the elderly woman’s body was later confirmed to be the subject of the search. - NH

Society members have been working hard to restore the pink salmon population in the area which was devastated by development during construction of the Inland Island Highway. NCES president Ken Kirkby said their efforts to restore the creek and the work at the hatchery has brought the pink salmon back in historic numbers. In order to guarantee successful returns Kirkby said they nurse about 300,000 fish in the net pens until they are big and strong enough to be released. He said the work is tedious but it results in a better survival rate for the fish. “The rate of return at Nile Creek has skyrocketed over the past five years by doing this,”
he said. NCES projects have grown from initially restoring the side channels in Nile Creek and Kirkby said their continuing rehabilitation efforts help to support local fishing opportunities. “The restoration is from the top of the mountain to the sea. We have taken on six more rivers and are doing work in the estuaries as well as the ocean,” he said. Kirkby is hoping his group can partner with other environmental groups on the Island including those who are restoring Chef and Cook creeks. “My hope is to bring together a loose knit group so we are all in contact and sharing the knowledge we have gained and be one large effective entity.”

Museum forced to sell off artifacts Train station storage now to be used for train business again The Qualicum Beach Museum’s loss looks likely to become smart shoppers’ gain when organizers hold their annual garage sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 12. Museum manager Netanja Waddell said this year’s event will feature more than the usual assortment of household items donated by the membership. “This year is going to be unique because we are adding some of our artifacts to the sale,” she said. “It won’t be items of great, great value, but for instance we have had five sewing machines donated so we are selling a few of those.” The move comes as the museum scrambles to find a home for a number of items that had been stored at the nearby Qualicum Beach train station building, which they had to vacate in preparation for the resumption of passenger rail service on the line. “We have an extreme lack of space,” Waddell said. “We were recently thrown a curve ball because we had some things in the train station and we had to empty it.” Although the museum is currently raising funds for an addition to the current Beach Ave. facility, any storage opportunities it might offer will come far in the future. Beside the sewing machines, she said the museum hopes to sell off an old wooden ironing board, a headboard, antique mirror and some vintage tools. Vicious circle
T
here are likely few people who would argue with the need to take care of the public purse and to ensure that waste and duplication are eliminated as much as possible when a government is making spending decisions. It’s just prudent and makes a lot of sense. However, as we watch the latest round of job cuts in the federal government — a whopping 3,872 of them this time around — we have to wonder if perhaps the budgetary knife is perhaps slicing just a little too close to the bone. As governments are quickly discovering in European countries right now, austerity is a poor choice for revitalizing a sputtering economy, as the people who were employed in relatively wellpaying jobs find themselves no longer able to purchase the goods and services that are needed to keep the economy ticking along. As those workers hit the streets in search of another position, you can bet they won’t be buying any luxury goods and will likely cut back on any other discretionary spending. Cuts of this nature — if they are deep enough — have the potential to start a vicious circle of less spending in the local economy leading to fewer jobs in the local economy and at least the perception of the need for more cuts. That circle, if it gets bad enough, can turn into a whirlpool that sucks everybody down with it. Of course, these people didn’t sit twiddling their fingers until closing time either. They provided services to the public that will be missed at best and at worst will seriously jeopardize the government’s ability to carry out its day-to-day business. Don’t kid yourself. We all use government services, even if we may not be aware of it at the time. Those services could be severely curtailed, despite reassuring words about efficiencies and the elimination of duplication. Has the federal government crossed the line between fat and bone in its cuts? That remains to be seen, but the indications at this point are troubling. — editorial by Neil Horner

Letters DECLINING SUPPORT Many voters are undoubtedly angry with the BC Liberals, and numerous disgusted former supporters of the BC Liberals avoided the polls but, contrary to what Scott Fraser would have readers believe, overall election figures do not support his claim of increased confidence in the NDP. In Port Moody-Coquitlam the NDP votes were down 1,544, Chilliwack-Hope increased by only 134, over the 2009 election: a net loss of 1,410 votes of confidence! In fact the by-election results show that the BC Conservative Party, led by John Cummins for a scant 11 months, is already on the move with over 4,000 voters, in Port MoodyCoquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope, placing their confidence in the BC Conservative Party. ELECT VIHA BOARD On the same day the news reported the premier’s announcment about new hospitals at Courtenay and Campbell River, they also carried a much more substantial update story on the missing hospital for Oceanside. The difference between the two stories is that our sister communities didn’t accept the original anti-community decision by VIHA to build a bigger regional hospital to serve both communities, proposing to locate it way out in the bush, remote from either community.

They pushed back and forced VIHA to reverse its decision and replace the old hospitals in each of their communities instead. What they understood is that bigger and more sophisticated hospitals don’t give local people access to urgent health care in a timely way. Oceanside is the only community of its size on Vancouver Island that doesn’t have that kind of access. The vast majority of people coming to ERs are people who need medical attention for non-life threatening problems. We shouldn’t have to travel miles along a highway and join the end of a six-hour lineup to have a broken leg fixed, treat a sick child or senior, or get a diagnosis that can be taken care of by old-fashioned common-sense medical treatment. Now that VIHA has locked us into paying for a glorified doctor’s office that will be of use to few of us, the next step is for us to fix VIHA. To do that, we need to make sure the directors of VIHA are accountable to their communities, not to their own CEO and the minister of education. If each regional district on the Island were to elect or appoint directors for a fixed term, that would result in a perfectly manageable board of 10 people, each subject to re-election/appointment every three years. GREEN SPACE NEEDED Having been out of town for several days, I returned to Qualicum to be pleasantly surprised by the changes on the former school bus site. Gone are the walls of cedars blocking the view of Mount Arrowsmith and the school playing fields. Now we have welcome southern orientation, expansive views, and openness. We have a great sense of public space at one of the the most important intersections in the town. As an architect and planner, I see great potential for development — but not the kind of development that some of us have perhaps been considering. Hopefully we can resist the temptation to develop this property for commercial or even cultural facilities. The real value of this site is that, in obtaining it, we now have a central, multipurpose town square with adjacent green fields and a splendid prospect. The buildings facing this space, and The Old School House, have a new outlook and a new sense of place. We can landscape the site, introducing paving and other urban features that integrate pedestrian and traffic movement, parking, outdoor seating and intermittent street activities like markets, street fairs and dances. This would involve effective, imaginative urban design, not costly facilities development. Every successful town has a meaningful, multipurpose public open space at its center. I see that Bill C-38, short name “Jobs, Growth and Long-term Prosperity Act,” was officially introduced by the Tories and read in parliament for the first time on Thursday, April 26. Fish habitat is indeed being struck from the bill: “...141. The definition “fish habitat” in subsection 34(1) of the Act is repealed...” ...and no, there is no new definition proposed... They’re even changing the heading of section 34 (definitions) from fish habitat protection and pollution prevention to fisheries prevention and pollution prevention. The current Act’s wording: “35. (1) No person shall carry on any work or undertaking that results in the harmful alteration, disruption or destruction of fish habitat.” When the story broke in March, Otto Langer’s leaked document indicated the proposed change: “No person shall carry on any work, undertaking or activity other than fishing, that results in an adverse effect on a fish of economic, cultural or ecological value.” If that wasn’t bad enough, the wording I’ve found in Thursday’s introduced Act is “35. (1) No person shall carry on any work, undertaking or activity that results in serious harm to fish that are part of a commercial, recreational or Aboriginal fishery, or to fish that sup-
port such a fishery.” In the Langer version, “habitat” was eliminated but there might have been some hope for all fish, given the “ecological value” wording. No more. Now with the “fishery” or “supporting-afishery” only slant, if you’re a fish that’s not fished and you aren’t contributing to a fishery, good luck. Just on the freshwater side, this could include numerous headwater, above-barrier species and stocks (cutthroat, char, sculpins, etc.) on Vancouver Island. If, as one of these fish, you are somehow lucky enough to be classified as part of, or supporting, a fishery, you might be protected, but your habitat can now be “seriously harmed” without consequence. I hope I’ve misread the federal website, or I’ve got it wrong. If I’ve read it right and this is what the government intends to do, please write Harper and your MP and urge them to re-consider. There’s some good news on Shelly Creek, says Faye Smith, with an impressive number of coho salmon returning to spawn. The news came after volunteers with the Mid Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society (MVIHES) conducted a smolt counting exercise on the local creek, which is a small tributary that enters the Englishman River just upstream of the orange bridge in Parksville. The numbers they came up with, she said, were impressive. “Last year, by May 31, everyone involved in the smolt counting was thrilled to see that they had recorded nearly 3,000 fish in the six weeks of monitoring,” she said. “This year, in less than two weeks, they have recorded 3,119 fish.” These fish face a struggle — the water quality is poor, the coho habitat is very limited and the invasive American bullfrog is taking its toll
on them. When they reach the estuary where they expect to fatten up and get used to the salt water, the Canada goose has destroyed almost all of the estuary grasses that provide feeding channels, cover and shade. Despite the challenges, Smith said she’s very much encouraged. “Is this a miracle or not, that so many juvenile coho, as well as Rainbow and Cutthroat trout and other species, fight the odds in these small urban streams and live out their life cycle?” she said. “So let’s put an end to the idea that ditches are not important enough to protect as fish habitat. Shelly Creek has been ditched, culverted and pretty much twisted like a pretzel from its headwaters in Errington to its confluence with the Englishman and look how it is producing. ave Davies can often be found painting sea shells in a little studio at The Old School House (TOSH) Art Centre in Qualicum Beach. The talented artist is an active member of the Arrowsmith Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Decosmos Fine Artist’s Group and the Oceanside Community Arts Council and while his painted canvases adorn the gallery walls, his uniquely painted sea shells are also on display waiting to be purchased for a good cause. Davies has been turning the shells into little pieces of artwork and selling them to help land mine victims in Cambodia. Although Cambodia is no longer being terrorized by the Khmer Rouge’s deadly guerilla warfare tactics, Cambodians are still being maimed and killed by the thousands of active explosive-laden mines still littered in the ground. Davies who lives with his wife Ann in Columbia Beach collects oyster and clam shells from the beaches around his home and paints pebbles and images of boats on them. After developing a successful technique of painting on the shells he started to sell them with all proceeds going towards assisting Cambodians who want to make a better life in the war ravaged country. The shells are bleached to create a white canvas and the giant clam shells are what Davies uses to paint his detailed fishing boats. Oyster shells have an adductor muscle inside that is used to hold the oyster shut. It is slightly raised and grooved with dark

markings on it and Davies blends those natural marks into the artistic images he paints on the shells. His labour of love has resulted in transforming people’s lives in Cambodia because all the proceeds raised from the sale of his shells go towards sponsoring a student’s education in Phnom Penh as well as The Green Gecko Project which helps keep children off the street. To date, Davies has raised almost $5000 for the cause. Davies and his wife have a daughter who lives in Cambodia and the artist said he and his wife travel to the area every year and it makes them appreciate what we take for granted here in Oceanside. “We try to take in a neighboring country when we travel to Cambodia and you see that people don’t have much there… they live in shacks. You don’t grumble as much because you realize how lucky we are,” he admitted. Davies is sponsoring a student named Da who lost a limb in a land mine. With Davies financial support, Da has finished high school and is now studying agriculture at university. “The money goes towards a room so he doesn’t have to study in a room with 10 other people. He wants to teach agriculture which is very important over there.” The Green Gecko Project which Davies also contributes financially to supports children who previously lived and begged on the streets of Cambodia. Green Gecko provides education and opportunities to the children through their formative years and into their adult lives, empowering them to achieve their full potential.

The Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce Visitor Centre has a couple of fancy new signs thanks to the provincial Jobs, Tourism and Innovation fund. “The province sent us a note that we were getting a cheque for $7,500 to use for pretty much anything,” said chamber executive director Kim Burden. They looked at what would best help draw people into the chamber office and visitor’s centre, located at 1275 East Island Highway and decided their 16-year-old sign could use some help. They managed to get Scott Signs to build them a whole new one that he was able to tie in with the theme and look of last year’s big Welcome sign on the highway and other city signs around town. MLA Ron Cantelon, acting mayor Sue Powell and the the chamber board were on hand Friday for the unveiling. “As I can tell you from my days in real estate, the sign is everything,” Cantelon said.

Open house to highlight life at the animal shelter What really goes on at the Parksville SPCA office? That’s a question manager Nadine Durante wants to answer for as many people as possible when the local shelter holds a special open house event on Saturday,
May 5. The focus of this year’s event, Durante said, is volunteerism and she and the SPCA staff are eager to outline what volunteering opportunitiers are available at the shelter. Karen Moe Photography will also
be at the open house. Moe specializes in animal portraits and she can help anyone’s dog, cat, goldfish or hamster look their best. The open house runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the shelter on the Alberni Highway.

David Colin Umpleby April 30th 1938 – April 22nd 2012 After a lengthy illness, David passed away peacefully, his loving family by his side. He is survived by his wife Ann and daughters Cheryl and Helen (Ian). David led a full life as a teacher, geologist, avid gardener and reader. He will be sadly missed by family in Britain as well. Doris Margaret Hughes passed away at Stanford Place in Parksville, BC on April 26, 2012. Doris passed peacefully after a long and hard battle with Parkinson’s. She was born in Vancouver, BC on January 26, 1924, age 88 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Walter after a wonderful marriage of 63 years. Doris will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Doris was well known for her beautiful smile. Doris worked for the Burnaby School District as a teacher and later a principal for many years. A Memorial Service will be held at Yates Funeral Home, 1000 Allsbrook Rd Parksville, BC on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 2:00PM. A reception for family and friends will follow. James (Jim) Fulton died peacefully at home on Tuesday April 24, 2012 with his wife Shirley by his side. Jim was born in Ontario in 1930. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley, his son Bill, his daughter Julie, brother Robert, sister Lorraine and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim started his education at the Royal Military College in Kingston, ON followed by his involvement in the Korean War. Once discharged, he obtained his Masters and Doctorate in Civil Engineering. He worked as a Civil Engineer in various locations in Ontario. His last position was with the Federal Government in Ottawa. Jim and Shirley moved to Vancouver Island in 1987 and enjoyed boating. Retirement also saw them travelling far and wide. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Craig Bay Clubhouse, 1300 Gabriola Dr Parksville, BC on Saturday May 12, 2012 at 2:00PM. Mission Hill to play the Acoustic Cafe
Some multi talented Vancouver Island musicians perform this week at the Qualicum Acoustic Café. Mission Hill is a four-person family band that plays a range of music from Bluegrass, Folk, and Celtic, to old-time and western swing. You can catch their performance which will include a selection of bluegrass, western swing and old time tunes and songs this Friday, May 4 and it will be the last Acoustic Cafe until October. The core of the band is the Romanow/Knudson Family. Ali is on fiddle, banjo and vocals, Wendy plays upright bass and sings and Bob is on mandolin. With Chris Herbst joining on guitar and vocals, the band pulls together tight harmonies and solid instrumentals. Ali’s original songs and tunes are reminiscent of the 20’s swing
era, with a hint of Bob Wills, a lovely waltz out of the old time tradition, to a folk song written about a trip on the E&N railway recently recorded by Valdy. Mission Hill is booked into the recording studio in mid May and is looking forward to performing at the Lighthouse Bluegrass Festival at the end of June. Prior to the Mission Hill performance on the Rotary House stage in Qualicum Beach there will be the open stage. Anyone who would like a ten minute slot on the open stage can email the hosts at: jbeaton@shaw.ca. The Acoustic Cafe happens on the first Friday of the month. The Chantrelles will perform blues, soul covers of 60’s hits and some originals at an all ages dance at the Errington Hall on Friday, May 4. Hailing from Victoria, The Chantrelles are an eight-piece R&B group that follows the road less taken. The band members, many of them students in the music program at the University of Victoria, include percussionist Adam Martin. The drummer who plays with a few bands in Victoria is originally from these parts. He graduated from Ballenas Secondary School in 2003 but back then he played the saxophone in school. Martin said he is more of a rhythm person so he put down his horn and is now into drumming. He said there is a horn sec-
tion in the band as well as a dedicated tambourine player. Rather than simply coasting by on the Motown and Stax Records hits which the group has been playing for over a year, the Chantrelles set out to write their own tunes, taking elements from all their favourite eras of soul music and melting them down into super-tight dance jams. Martin said they currently have about five original songs they are pretty tight on and including their covers they have a long fun set for dancing. Spending an evening with The Chantrelles, you’ll hear early 70’s funk bumping up against old-school twist tunes, with an early R&B style ballad here and there. Tickets are $15 advance or $20 at the door and can be purchased at the Cranky Dog Music in Parksville and the Errington Store.

Springwood Park was bursting at the seams with young baseball players on Saturday, as Oceanside Minor Baseball held its annual opening day ceremony and marked the official start of its season with a full slate of games. “We were real pleased with how it went — the rain held off
and we got all the games in,” OMB president Mike Parlow said after, adding “we had a good turnout, almost the whole league was out... it was really good to have all the coaches and players out on the field.” By all accounts Oceanside Minor Baseball was established in 1984, which means the asso-

Six local runners were rewarded for their hard work and exceptional seasons recently at a special camp in Nanaimo headed up by a legend in the sport. Earning an invite to the Gary Reed, Future Stars of Canada Middle Distance Camp, held in Nanaimo April 20-22, were OTFC’s Miryam Bassett, Noah Elliott, Peter Oxland, Thomas Oxland, Taylor Chestnut and Rebecca Bassett, along with OTFC coaches Kim and Randy Longmuir. “It was,” said Kim, “an outstanding experience.” According to Kim “only 30
accomplished competitive middle distance runners from around the province had the opportunity to be a part of the camp,” and the fact that six of them were from Oceanside certainly says a lot about the local club. Those invited to the camp put in 7.5 hours on the track, two hours in the gym and 2.5 hours in lectures. They also had the opportunity to watch some of Reed’s most memorable races on the screen. Reed was Canada’s top 800m runner for many years, and still holds the Canadian record at 1:43.68. Many will remember Reed
for his heartbreaking fourth in Beijing and second at the World Championships in Osaka in 2007. He is a six-time Canadian 800m champion, and ran in two Olympic Games and five World Championships. He retired in December 2010 and upon his retirement started the Reed Athletics Fund, a non-profit organization for Canadian track and field athletes. “Gary is an exceptional person on so many levels, not just his gift as an athlete, but in his genuine support and encouragement of up and coming Canadian athletes. One really nice man,” said Kim.

District 69 is being invaded, but the biggest danger is increased warmth. Through May around 40 antique quilts will be on display at the Craig Heritage Park and Museum in Parksville, Quilt Walk will display 67 quilts in local businesses and there will be over 300 quilts at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre on the May long weekend. The Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild organizes the events every three years to celebrate the amazing collections of the local quilters and their ongoing work in the community. There are around 290 guild members who work together and donate over 100 locally made comfort quilts a year to hospitals, hospice, care homes and others. It has been 30 years that the 893 Beaufort Squadron air cadets have been wandering in the wilderness, but now they are finally about to move into a home of their own. That’s cause for celebration, says Leslie Frechette, and she’s hoping Oceanside residents will help the cadets do just that at a special murder mystery benefit dinner and auction on May 12.
The event, entitled, A Dream Takes Flight, is being held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre to mark the move from a series of school gymnasiums to a state of the art hangar at the Qualicum Beach municipal airport. Frechette, who sits on the sponsoring committee for the cadets, said attendees will get a major bang for their entertainment dollar. “There’s a murder mystery called The Scent(s) of Doom, presented by Victoriamurdermysteries.com,” she
said. “It’s a four-part skit where they circulate amongst the crowd, who has to guess who did it. There’s a buffet dinner, a cash bar, balloonpopping prizes, a 50/50 draw, a silent auction and a live auction with celebrity auctioneers.” Those auctions should be a highlight, she said, noting there are currently over $7,000 worth of items. A panel of judges will decide on the best amateur and best professional team. Chefs from Chateau Victoria and The Union Club will be tasting and judging samples, with the winners receiving awards donated by Island Exposures Gallery. Professional chefs and ice sculptors will be judging the chili and carvings, and local businesses will decorate their windows for the event. The Kid Zone will be a flurry of activity with face paints, story time, games, and activities and a petting zoo. New this year is the 70th Birthday celebration for the Town of Qualicum Beach. A big birthday cake will be served up in front of the Town Hall at 12:30. Walter Hoogland, Chairman of Fire and Ice says “The mayor and council will be there, singing happy birthday and they are bringing Oceanside Concert Band”. He added “Everyone should bring their appetites, because the day starts at the legion with pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m.” Quality Foods, who are also celebrating an anniversary (their 30th) will sponsor an ice carving demonstration in front of store beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Vancouver Island’s most famous chili cook-off, but there is a lot more than just steaming cups of chili at annual Fire and Ice Street Festival in Qualicum Beach this weekend. The main streets of the village will be closed to traffic so the thousands who flock to the Town can watch professional ice carvers create magnificent sculptures and enjoy first rate entertainment including dancing in the street and a zone just for kids. There are plenty of activities to enjoy at the 20th annual event and because Qualicum Beach is celebrating it’s 70th birthday this year there are some extra events in the days lineup. Chair of the Fire and Ice Committee Walter Hoogland said this year there has been fantastic support from businesses in the community and the volunteers have been enthusiastic. I am pleased with whole event. We have volunteers who come back every year. It shows the history and commitment to this community event, He added there has been no shortage of support with a variety of businesses from Parksville to Qualicum Beach stepping up to support the event. We are doing well with volunteers and even better with service groups and businesses.” Kiwanis, both Rotary Clubs, the Nadan Squadron and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue are among some of the community groups lending a hand. Camelot Homes is providing carpenters to put up pallets.

The Island Exposures Art Gallery is hosting an opening reception May 3. The gallery has relocated from the south end of Parksville to one of the retail shops at the Beach Club Plaza. Owner and artist Craig Carmichael is looking forward to featuring the diverse work of local artists in the relaxed and friendly space and several of them will be on hand at the event, presenting a wide range of techniques. The gallery’s opening reception features two photogra-
phy-based artists Lynn Page and Randy Hall, along with six painters presenting work in mediums such as encaustics, oils, acrylic, mixed media and watercolour.
