ARTS AND RECREATION CENTRE The Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre is located at 500 North Star Road. From swimming and weight training to painting and pottery to special event hosting, the Arts and Recreation Centre does it all. The new, improved weight room and the whirlpool, saunas (one for adults and one for families) and the steam room offer options for visitors. A destination for art in Quesnel, the arts centre has monthly art shows, the gallery gift shop, a permanent art collection, art workshops and on-going arts programming. The aquatic facility includes a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool with 1-metre diving board, slide and Tarzan rope swing, hot tub, free form leisure pool, adult and family saunas, family change rooms, on deck party area, viewing area and Shiraoi Gardens/patio area accessible off pool deck. The weight room includes four treadmills, two recumbent stationary bikes, one upright stationary bike, two rowing machines, three cross trainers, two stairmasters, satellite TV, punching bags, universal weight training equipment and selectorized machines as well as free weights. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. – 10 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Sunday, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., statutory holidays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. The Quesnel Art Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. For recreation information call 250-992-8200; for gallery information call, 250-991-4014.

FARMERS’ MARKET The Quesnel Old Time Farmers’ Market has a slogan, “Come for the freshness, stay for the fun.” Now in its 24th year, the Farmers’ Market, located on the Helen Dixon lawn in downtown Quesnel, offers locals and visitors a wide selection of fresh seasonal produce, delectable baking, original arts and crafts and live entertainment on the dedicated stage. Ready-to-eat foods allow market visitors to sit down, take in the market atmosphere and satisfy the appetite. Markets are every Saturday from the second weekend in May to mid-October, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Special events at the Farmers’ Market include Art in the Market where local artists are invited to set up portable studios under large Market tents and Customer Appreciation Day where Market vendors host a thank you luncheon for all to enjoy. LeBOURDAIS PARK LeBourdais Park, located in North Quesnel, is home to a variety of local events. From the annual Billy Barker’s Days bash to smaller musical events, the stage is a fabulous place to check out local talent. Take a sit on the rolling, grassy hill, park your lawn chair or simply plant yourself on the ground and take in some amazing entertainment. LeBourdais Park is also home to a fabulous set of swings, jungle gym, and spray park. Cool off under one of the many fire hydrants, buckets and watershooting rocks. Little ones can sit in one of the shallow pools of water, while big kids can take in the huge water guns. Cooling off was never easier.

LIBRARY The Cariboo Regional District Library is home to a total of 12,000 square feet, where more than 55,000 items promise adventure, entertainment, education and an escape from “the real world.” Do it yourself guides, gardening tips, self help books and exercise manuals are nestled in tall, natural wood shelves. Word lovers can curl up in one of the many high backed, plush chairs, wincing as King takes them on a suspenseful journey filled with murderous clowns beckoning from storm drains. Fingers fly over keyboards, searching the net for recipes, news articles, celebrity gossip or an anticipated e-mail. Laptop lovers gravitate towards the far wall, where two honey coloured antique desks await their Mac Books. Wireless Internet is now offered and provides the opportunity to settle in, choose a site and search the world wide web. ABORIGINAL WALKING TOUR Stroll the Carrier people’s heritage trails. The Aboriginal Walking Tour has five designated areas each complemented by a sign highlighting Carrier’s people’s journey to the Gold Pan City, the history of fishing in the area, the 1864 hanging of five Chilcotin chiefs and the land they love. Pick up your Aboriginal Walking Tour guide at the Visitor Information Centre.
Quesnel’s Riverfront Trail is five kilometres long and takes about one hour to complete at a leisurely pace. Ceal Tingley Park, located at the confluence of the Quesnel and Fraser Rivers is “Kilometer 0” of the system and has many attractions within its borders.
MOVIE THEATRE The Carib Theatre, located at 367 Reid Street in downtown Quesnel, offers first run films and return favourites for any movie lover. The city’s only movie theatre is open seven days a week with shows at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday. THRILLS AND SPILLS OF RODEO Alex Fraser Park comes alive the third weekend in July, as the sights, sounds and smells of the Quesnel Rodeo awaken the senses. The event is part of the festivities of Billy Barker Days, celebrating the history of the Cariboo. Cowboys compete for pride, glory and cash prizes during the three-day, amateur event, which draws competitors from across the province. Bull-riding, steer-wrestling and wild horse competitions thrill audiences as the difficulty of these events is often painfully obvious on the faces of competitors. Weekly events, sponsored by the local Gymkhana clubs, take place at both Alex Fraser Park and Bouchie Lake Community grounds. These amateur events serve as a precursor to the B.C. Rodeo events held during Billy Barker Days, as young competitors tors view their participation as a step towards ards future fame. Spectators are welcome, but must always be mindful oof the animals’ safety, the riders’ safety and the public’s ssafety. Whether it is a gymkana event with budding young rodeo W sstars, a pony club activity where young riders are learning ddressage, the various team roping or team penning activitties or the multi-faceted Fall Fair or 4-H weekends, Alex Fraser Park is a very active part of Quesnel. FISHING Avid fishermen find the Cariboo an ideal spot to indulge their sport. Species which can be caught at different locations and in different seasons include trout and char. Also found here but strictly controlled by catch and release regulations are all steelhead, kokanee salmon, whitefish, burbot and sturgeon. Fishermen are required to report all tagged fish they catch and are asked to release them back into the water. Before dipping the line in the water, all anglers must possess the proper permits and licenses.

LOCAL CATCH Close to Quesnel, Bouchie Lake offers rainbow trout and has a boat launch. Fishpot Lake, 125 km from Quesnel, has rainbow trout and a small recreation site and full-facility resort. Milburn Lake, 16 km west of Quesnel has rainbow and brook trout. There are no facilities or services and no boat launch. Dragon Lake, just 3 km south of Quesnel offers rainbow trout. The lake has a boat launch and resort with full facilities. Hush Lake, 24 km north of Quesnel has brook trout. This lake is a government rest stop but no boat launch. Ten Mile Lake, 11 km north of Quesnel, has stocked rainbrow trout and stocked kokanee. There’s a boat launch and provincial camp ground. Bowron Lake Chain offers 120-km waterway with several interlocking lakes with excellent fishing for rainbow, kokanee, lake trout and bull trout. The lake is restricted to non-motorized boats. WELLS • BARKERVILLE • BOWRON One of Canada’s largest and most comprehensive historic towns, Barkerville provides visitors with a time warp experience as they step into the life and times of the cafes, stores, professionals and services which followed the miners providing for their basic needs. The era has been recreated, as well as a wealth of mining antiques and displays. The park is open for visitors from early May until well into September. Exhibits and displays, impersonators of famous people, the infamous court of the “Hanging Judgeâ€?, Matthew Begbie and Theatre Royal, the only continuous theatre production in the Quesnel region, are also available to the public. For more information regarding Barkerville call 1-250-994-3302. Along Highway 26, visitors can stop at Cottonwood House, 40 km from Quesnel, on their way to Barkerville which is about an hour and half from Quesnel. Cottonwood House is one of the many stopping houses which provided provisions and lodgings to pioneers on the Cariboo Waggon Road. With a gift store, country kitchen, candy store and cabins available for rental, Cottonwood House still offers a respite for travellers.
Wells: more than
The site is operated by the Quesnel School District. Just minutes before arriving in Barkerville, Wells is a modern community founded in the 1930s to serve the needs of one mining company. Today, many of the original buildings of Wells still stand – many of them brightly painted – and its cultural vitality remains. There are a number of art galleries, the Island Mountain Arts Summer School of the Arts, the Sunset Theatre and the annual ArtsWells festival of all things art. Also very close to Barkerville is the world famous Bowron Lakes where outdoors enthusiasts from around the world come to paddle the chain of interconnected lakes and enjoy some of the best natural beauty in B.C.

WEST FRASER TIMBER PARK West Fraser Timber Park, off Johnston Avenue across the metal bridge, is home to a vast array of swings, slides, jungle gyms and more. One portion is designed with toddlers in mind, the other side incorporates more advanced equipment. Check out the climbing wall, the monkey bars, the suspension bridge and more.
NATURE EDUCATION CENTRE The Nature Education and Resource Centre’s goal is to foster awareness, stewardship and restoration of local environments and is operated by Baker Creek Enhancement Society. Check out their permanent education displays including a large saltwater tank and a large freshwater tank. The knowledgeable staff are available to show you around as well as book education programs on various topics. TENNIS West Fraser Timber Park is home to four beautiful tennis courts. The courts are open to the public seven days a week during daylight hours. There is no charge, just bring your racket, your mean backhand and enjoy!

Lawn bowling facilities are located in Quesnel’s West Fraser Timber Park and the public is invited to play a game or two. Set on five acres in the park, the lawn bowling facilities, with a club house, are administered by the Quesnel and District Lawn Bowling Club with many volunteers helping out.
Baseball diamonds in West Fraser Timber Park allow the public to take in a local game, or when not in use, are available for a game or just the chance to throw the ball around.
THE POND West Fraser Timber Park’s pond is an excellent spot to do a little pond-dipping to see, up close, some of the fascinating creatures that live in the pond. Waterfowl and other birds along with many species of wildlife visit the pond regularly.

PROSPECTORS SHOW AND SHINE The Prospectors Car Club was started in Quesnel in 1997 to promote interest in classic and modified cars, trucks and motorcycles. From a charter membership of six, the club has grown to about 70 members today. Vehicle ownership is not a prerequisite for membership; you only need a love for cars to be welcome. The annual Prospectors Car Club Show and Shine is slated for Aug. 24 – 26.
