Literacy Scrabble scramble on Saturday The Campbell River Literacy Association is hosting a fundraising Scrabble Tournament Saturday. The Campbell River Literacy Association has hosted two previous tournaments but they want this one to be the biggest of all. “Everyone loves to play scrabble and beat their friends, now they will have the chance to raise money for a good cause,” says Julina Spetch, CR Literacy Association ESL Coordinator. Both advanced and recreational players will enjoy three rounds of Scrabble. Players will be matched up with others of similar ability as much as possible. Beverages and snacks are provided for Scrabble players. Local businesses are generously supporting the event with the donation of prizes and food. Prizes will be awarded for areas such as top scores, lowest score, player bringing
in the highest total in donations, early bird prize and more. The Campbell River Literacy Association is fundraising in support of their literacy programs in Campbell River. For over 12 years the Campbell River Literacy Association has been working hard to provide free programming such as Adult Literacy tutoring, Youth and Adult English as a Second Language tutoring, Computer literacy programming and a English Conversational class. They train volunteer tutors, who work oneon-one or in small groups. If you know

Down to business The BC Salmon Farmers Association is stripping it down – their wardrobe that is – for their second annual Heart and Stroke Foundation fundraiser. Five Easy Pieces is the name of the challenge: with the five staff at the BCSFA taking on wearing just five pieces of clothing to work for the month of April, with the goal of raising $5,000. Last year, in the first year of this fun event, they had agreed to six pieces – but decided to up the ante for this year’s event. “It’ll be a challenge for sure – but we know the funds raised will help those with bigger challenges,” said Mary Ellen Walling, Executive Director of BCSFA. “Our team is excited about supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation for another year.” At the same time that the challenge is getting smaller in terms of number of clothing items, it’s getting bigger in terms of participants. Prior to the long weekend, fishing the local lakes was described as slow by many anglers. The public boat launches in Campbell River did become quite active as the weather turned for the better and anglers were getting out. Shelter Point is an area that the boats were fishing. Winter Springs are being caught in small numbers in the area and Bates Beach has been good for salmon further south. Many of the boats heading out this time of year are also prawning and some good catches have been reported. I met up with Krista Pearce at Browns Bay Marinaa and another busy fishing season is anticipated again this year. Some nice trout have been caught at Robertss Lake while Krista Pearce holding a big fish (pillo w fish that is). trolling along the east side of the lake, but the wind can blow you off the lake at any given moment. Flyfishing is best early evening on the north and south end of the lake. On a recent road trip, I made my way to Stella Lake for the first time. The lake is located on the Elk Bay Main Ma logging road, approximately 20 km’s km away. The road is rough most of the t time although it is well used t summer. Signs are posted to in the lea lead the way and Stella Lake will be a ggood destination to try fishing in Stella Lake weeks to come. I first learned to tie fishing flies in Kamloops in the mid 70s and I still tie the trout and salmon patterns that can be used in the Campbell River area. After leaving their base in Moose Jaw and following their practice session in the Valley, the team travels across North America performing at
approximately 70 air shows at 50 different locations. The original 431 Squadron formed Nov. 11, 1942 at Burn, England and were moved to RCAF station Dartmouth, N.S. The were disbanded Oct. 1, 1954, and re-activated April 1, 1978. On Oct. 15, 1999, the squadron was presented their Squadron Colours for 25 years of service.

The city is forecasting a $3.6 million budget shortfall for 2012, according to preliminary fig-
ures. That’s up substantially from the last estimated budget deficit of $550,000 back in December. The picture looks bleaker now because of a change in the prop-
erty assessment value of the defunct Catalyst mill site. The BC Assessment Authority announced early last month that Catalyst no longer meets the requirements of a major industrial property, and
has been reclassified as business/ other, which means a significant reduction in Catalyst’s property taxes. That decision results in a loss of $1.8 million in tax revenue for

Included in the deficit is a $1.1 million tax shortfall carried over from 2011, plus a $1.3 million increase in costs related to contract commitments and inflationary increases, said Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services. If the city were to maintain the current level of services it provides to citizens, the tax rate would have to increase by 24 per cent in order to make up the $3.6 million. The loss of $1.8 million from Catalyst alone, equates to a 12 per cent residential tax increase. To put that into perspective, Ciarniello said a one per cent residential tax increase would bring in $150,000 in revenue for the city. Lunn’s inspiration was the neighbourhood feral cats From Page 10 “We are inspired by nature and our surroundings and natural objects,” says Lunn. Lunn will go through Nygaard’s sketchbook and use his work to complement her own. “There’s no ego with the two of us, we treat the work as
ongoing until it’s done, “ she said. “We don’t separate our living from our work.” Lunn works in a series when she gets inspired and this winter her inspiration was the feral cats in her immediate neighbourhood. Lunn has sculpted cats into much of her recent work — a Buddha with
a cat entwining itself at his knees, a rotund cat with a mischievous grin and many other “cats” are coming out of the studio. “I see the playful side of cats, they are unique creatures. I don’t usually do comical things,” Lunn said. The feral cats, or Darrel’s Ferals, are

Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society’s Walk for Wildlife It isn’t a Teddy Bear’s Picnic in the woods, so you probably won’t see a bear, but Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society thinks you are sure to see some chattering songbirds or a great blue heron on the hunt as you stroll the banks of the Courtenay River Estuary on their first Charity Walk for Wildlife April 22. Walk event organizer Lynda Hodgkinson says, “Charity walks are uniting communities
and are an opportunity for family and friends to take a few minutes for themselves and to acknowledge the importance of our connection with wildlife.” A fundraising registration fee of $10 will be waived if participants obtain sponsors and a prize will be awarded for the most pledges. Registration starts at noon at the parking area, south end of the Airpark’s runway just past the Whistle Stop
Pub and continues in a clockwise direction. Bring your pledge sheets and donation money. MARS couldn’t have picked a more unique location for their Walk for Wildlife as the paved walkway will accommodate strollers and wheelchairs yet still bring you tantalizingly close to the waterfowl, eagles, herons and seals that make the Estuary their home. The Estuary is the stage for a variety of wildlife
actors in their natural habitat and reflects MARS’ mission to conserve and protect it through rehabilitation and education. This is a great opportunity to meet ambassador birds who will appreciate your donations. Remember to bring your water container and fill up at the water station generously provided by Water Pure & Simple. Pledge sheets are available at local businesses including
