The Saanich Peninsula
The Saanich Peninsula extends north from the Greater Victoria suburb of Saanich, up 32 kilometres from Victoria to the Swartz Bay ferry terminal. The region, though small by geographical standards, is rich and diverse in land use — from small villages and farmland in Central Saanich and North Saanich to the busy town of Sidney, with its 11,000 inhabitants. The region is the historical homeland of the Coast Salish people and there are four Saanich First Nations on the Saanich Peninsula – Tsartlip, Tsawout, Pauquachin and Tseycum. Cont. on pg. 7

These islands bask in a warm Mediterranean climate, and their quiet bays, rocky headlands and lush greenery are a draw for boaters, kayakers and hikers alike. During the summer season, a constant parade of sailboats, yachts and powerboats can be seen from the Sidney waterfront, cruising out from the Saanich Peninsula’s many marinas and charter companies to enjoy an island adventure. Easily seen from Sidney,
the northern end of Sidney Island — known locally as Sidney Spit — is part of Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. The park is spread like a patchwork quilt of more than 15 islands and 50 smaller islands and reefs in the southern Strait of Georgia. The park protects a portion of one of Canada’s most endangered natural regions, an area where many plant and animal species found nowhere else in Canada are at the northernmost limits of their ranges.

A seasonal foot passenger ferry departs from the dock at the foot of Beacon Avenue, shuttling visitors out for a day trip or to enjoy an overnight camping trip. Visitors should register at a designated campsite before the last ferry leaves for the day. This part of the national park reserve provides wonderful opportunities for nature lovers to extend their stay in the Sidney area. Long walks along the sandy spit, picnicking and bird watching are favourite activities there. Mooring buoys and dock space are available for those who visit the island by boat. Situated on the Pacific Flyway, Sidney Spit’s inner lagoon provides migratory birds a stopover for their spring and fall migrations;
in all, at least 150 species of resident and migratory birds can be seen here – including bald eagles, blue herons, multiple species of grebe, cormorants and purple martins to name a few – an ideal destination for bird lovers. Just outside the Town of Sidney is McDonald campground, one of the national park reserve’s two drive-in campgrounds. Located just a few minutes from the Swartz Bay and Anacortes ferry terminals, this campground is a convenient escape for getting close to nature while still enjoying all of the amenities of nearby Town of Sidney. It’s also a great home base for exploring the Gulf Islands. Park lands on Mayne, North and South

Boating is a terrific way to explore the Gulf Island National Park Reserve (see page 16 for more details) and Sidney Spit, an island park featuring sandy beaches, walking trails and camping that’s also accessible by a seasonal passenger ferry. Centennial Park is a busy green space, home not only to walking trails and natural areas but also sports fields and ball diamonds, a children’s playground, skate park, three picnic shelters, lawn bowling green, tennis courts and more. Island View Beach Regional Park features easy walking trails ideal for spotting the many birds that make their home here, while the long, sandy beaches are popular for winter walks and summer swims. The Lochside Trail extends along the Peninsula, and is well-used as both a commuter trail and a multi-use leisure trail. Travelling along a former a railway bed, the trail stretches from Swartz Bay to Saanich, where it connects with the Galloping Goose Trail into downtown Victoria or west to Sooke, past beaches, farmland and wetlands, down country lanes and along suburban backyards.
