One-stop fire-training centre Comox Fire Training Centre is used by firefighters from all over Vancouver Island. Last Wednesday evening a group
of firefighters from Campbell River were there to enhance their skills and take advantage of the wonderful fire training
centre. Comox Chief Gord Schreiner says: “We are very pleased to not only offer our firefighters great
training opportunities but also other firefighters from other departments. Our training centre has almost everything a firefighter needs to keep his skills sharp. We believe we have one of the best training centres in the province. “Our centre is well used but we still have a lot of additional untapped capacity. We
are seeing more and more departments use this training centre on a regular basis. “The Campbell River fire department uses our site a few times each year. This type of training is very necessary to ensure our firefighters can keep themselves safe while provide good service to our citizens.” The Comox Fire Training Centre has
a formal “service provider” agreement with the Justice Institute of BC. This partnership allows firefighters on Vancouver Island to received accredited training without having to travel to the mainland saving both time and money. Since it formally started in 2002, Comox Fire Training Centre has seen over

The brain can sense even without functioning senses Q. What’s the flip side of the brain mutating pain by distracting a patient from nerve damage or other problems? For example, in a 2010 Super Bowl playoff game, Vikings quarterback Brett Favre seriously injured his ankle and hamstring. He was taken out of the game briefly but came back and played through the pain, which reclaimed his attention after the game’s end. A. The brain can also create pain, as it does in people’s experience of “phantom limb sensations,” when it misinterprets the spontaneous central nervous system activity occurring in the absence of normal sensory input, explains David G. Myers in “Psychology: Tenth Edition.” Just as the dreamer may “see” with eyes closed, so some 7 in 10 amputees may feel pain or movement in nonexistent limbs. An amputee may even try to step off a bed onto a phantom limb or lift a cup with a phantom hand. Sometimes those born without a limb perceive sensations from the missing arm
or leg. As psychologist R. Melzack surmises, the brain comes prepared to anticipate “that it will be getting information from a body that has limbs,” and acts accordingly. People with hearing loss may experience the sound of silence: phantom sounds -- a ringing in the ears known as “tinnitus.” Those who lose vision due to glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes may experience phantom sights -- nonthreatening hallucinations. Some with nerve damage have had taste phantoms, such as ice water seeming sickeningly sweet, while others have had phantom smells, as of nonexistent rotten food. As Myers emphasizes, “We feel, see, hear, taste and smell with our brain, which can sense even without functioning senses.” ●●●● Q. They were followed by millions of people from just about everywhere. Today, it is possible to find plenty of information about
the people of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Some national and regional sources will help, but it pays to know the differences among the four provinces. The first thing to do is to sort out the geography, because two of the provinces are barely a century old. Seminar Details: The Campbell River Genealogy Seminar will be held at the Maritime Heritage building on Saturday, April 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m in the Thulin Room on the second level. If lures and flies are not working, try fishing from shore using a worm. I stopped into Tyee Marine and the staff was very helpful with updating me with the latest fishing conditions on the lakes and Upper Campbell Lake saltwater. The bigger lakes like the Campbell and Comox, fish very well trolling Wiggle Wood lures. If you y are new to the area and want a free pub publication, the Vancouver Island Trout Fis Fishing Guide is available at the local tackle sho in Campbell River and Courtenay. shops While I was browsing Tyee Marine in Cam Campbell River, I noticed a fly selection cal called the Fly Mutipack, ranging in price fro from $2.98 to $4.98. This fly selection wou would be a good start for fishing the lakes and rivers in the area. Trout are being Larry Stefanyk VI Fishing Guide Publisher caught on the north end of Wolf lake trolling a wedding band. Quinsam Lake is fishing well for small size trout and a few big ones have been hooked by Campbell River angler Kris Salter. Halibut opened March 1 and it has been reported that fishing is slow at the moment. A few fish have been caught in the 30 to 50 pounds range. The Hump has been a destination point in Campbell River. Prawning by Twin Islands and Francisco Point has been good using a mixture of pellets and Carlyle cat food. Prawning at Nootka Sound is improving at Friendly Cove. The folks at Moutcha Bay Resort have been fishing for springs in 67 to 77 feet of water where the bait Prawns fish are showing up. Hoochies blue, blackk and pink were used. Moutcha Bay Resort opens for the season May 18. My first visit to this area was in 2006 and a lot of changes have been made at this facility. Local fishing guide Harry MacDonald was fishing in Gold River and walked through 16 inches of snow to gget to his favorite fishing pool. His sh partner was John Drewett from fishing Lon England. London Imp Impressions Custom Framing in Cam Campbell River is displaying replica cre creations of fish and sea life done by Qua artist William Van Orden. His Quadra wor is very realistic and I plan to visit work his studio this summer to view his Brooke Honey with replica Coho creations.

In its bowels is enough crude oil to fill more than 30 Olympic swimming pools, loading it down so that it sits 13 metres deep in the water, close to the carefully prescribed maximum safe draft for the narrow, shallow channel. The ship is one of 32 tankers that last year loaded crude from Burnaby’s Westridge terminal, the end of an 1,100-kilometre pipeline that runs from northern Alberta southwest across B.C. to the Pacific. But Kinder Morgan, which owns the Trans Mountain pipeline, has big plans to turn the current trickle of oil through Vancouver’s harbour into a gusher. It is expected to formally begin the process this spring to twin the pipeline and increase its current

There, tankers are unaccompanied southeast through the Strait of Georgia to Saturna Island, where they’re met again by Vancouver Island-based tugs that accompany them through Boundary Pass and Haro Strait until they pass Race Rocks and reach the wider waters of Juan de Fuca Strait between Victoria and Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Agencies on both sides of the border watch for any deviation from the defined shipping lane, which largely follows the international boundary. And a U.S. rescue tug based out of Neah Bay can scramble if any ship loses power and drifts towards rocks or shoreline.

The tankers must sail with two pilots – highly trained experts on local waters – in addition to the ship’s captain and navigation officer. The pilots command the vessel and don’t depend on the ship’s instruments – bringing their own laptops for GPS navigation and charting. Tankers only move in daylight with a minimum of one mile visibility, at a maximum of six knots, and only pass through the Second Narrows at slack tide. And loaded tankers have the channel to themselves – all other ships must wait – all
but eliminating the risk of collision. “The tankers are probably the most protected species out there,” Obermeyer said. Some of the rules stem from an incident in 1978 when the freighter Japan Erica hit the Second Narrows railway bridge in heavy fog. Pilots train for disaster using simulators, but the pilotage authority PERSONAL SERVICES
has also staged live harbour tests to verify that tugs can indeed control an errant tanker with an engine or rudder failure. Unlike the singlehulled Exxon Valdez, which spilled more than 230,000 barrels off Alaska in 1989, all tankers loading are required to be doublehulled.
