The high school rugby and track and ďŹ eld seasons are quickly becoming casualties of the labour dispute between public school teachers and the provincial government. Abbotsford-Mission district track meets have been cancelled until further notice, as work-to-rule job action by teachers has resulted in a shortage of volunteers available to run them. A handful of rugby programs are still soldiering on, but their futures hinge on a

Aggravated assault charges Man, 30, recovering after being beaten by girls Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Three teenage girls have been arrested and are facing charges in connection with the brutal beating of a 30-year-old man last Wednesday at Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford. The two 15-year-olds and one 16-year-old, who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Justice Act, face charges of aggravated assault and will appear in court this week, said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. He said the girls were among a group of about six people – also including a man in his 20s – who met up in Mill Lake Park. Some, or all of them, were drinking, and a dispute ensued. MacDonald said the subject of the argument is in question, as “varying accounts” have been provided by people at the scene. The three girls then allegedly turned on the victim, violently beating him. The group fled the scene, and the victim was discovered by a passerby on the northeast side of Mill Lake near some benches. MacDonald said the victim was in serious condition when

He said the case is unusual both in its level of violence and in the age and gender of the assailants, but is not unique in another aspect. “Regrettably, teenagers out in the middle of the night and consuming alcohol or drugs in the company of older people is not as unusual as we’d like.” Within hours of the assault, postings on Facebook were identifying the alleged suspects and speculating about the motivation for the attack. MacDonald said the suspects had already been identified by witnesses, but social media played a role in solidifying the case and adding to the evidence gathered by investigators. He said it was surprising that apparent friends of the accused would be so blatant in posting their names online. “It’s called the world-wide web for a reason.” MacDonald said social media can be a useful tool for investigators, helping to confirm the circumstances surrounding a crime or pinpointing the witnesses or suspects involved. “Some people are not aware that some of the comments they make (online) are ostensibly to the world ... or they don’t care.”

I’m hoping for a miracle, I suppose, that this whole labour business can get resolved so that we can have a track season. But I’m not holding my breath.” For some elite athletes, scholarships are on the line. Chantel Desch, a Grade 12 student at Yale who runs the 200 metres and 400 metres, said she can deal with the AbbyMission meets being scrapped. But she’s concerned the B.C. high school championships might be cancelled as well, and she was hoping a strong performance on the provincial stage would solidify an athletic scholarship to Simon Fraser University. “I’m not really affected as much by the Abby-Mission meets, but more by the
higher level meets,” she noted. “The most important meet is the B.C.’s.” “We’re all just going to have to make a few separate arrangements and make more effort personally to finding other ways to compete,” said Francesca Jackman, a track athlete at W.J. Mouat Secondary who also trains with the Royals.

Chris Farley “I hope that a lot of people would look at signing up for club meets.” On the rugby scene, Yale, Robert Bateman and Abby Collegiate’s senior boys teams are still running, but Hansen and Mouat have pulled the plug. “It was obviously the toughest decision we’ve had to make as teachers,” Mouat coach Chris Farley said. “I think we flipflopped several times before we came to a decision (not to coach). No one wins in it.
We just felt it needed to be done.” Bateman and Abby Collegiate are the only local senior girls rugby programs still operational, and that’s only because their primary coaches are from the community rather than faculty. With so many teams shutting down, it’s hard to schedule games. Bateman coach Jen Ross said that out of seven teams in the AA Fraser Valley league, only three remain. “It is difficult,” Ross said. “We don’t want to not support the teachers, but at the same time, the kids are the ones that are losing out.” Peter Cannon, coach of the Abby Collegiate senior girls, noted that his Grade 12-laden team was expected to be a top contender for the provincial title. But it’s up in the air whether the B.C. high school championships will happen this year. “We’re hopeful that the leagues and the provincial tournaments will be allowed to proceed,” he said. “All I know at this point is, the co-ordinator for the B.C. high school AA league has told us to get as many games in as possible before April 17, when the vote takes place with the BCTF.”

NewsBytes ATV CRASH RESCUE A 17-year-old Abbotsford boy was rescued by emergency crews from an off-road area after crashing on his all-terrain vehicle Saturday night and suffering possible spinal injuries. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) responded to the accident at about 7:15 p.m. They used their recently purchased 4x4 vehicle to get to the scene of the ATV crash on the Abbotsford/Chilliwack border in the Majuba Hill area of Vedder Mountain. AFRS and paramedics worked together to treat the teen and transport him back to the staging area on Old Yale Road. He was then transported to hospital by ambulance.
BARNS SAVED An alert farmer saved several barns from going up in flames on Sunday afternoon. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service received a call from a farm in the 500 block of Whatcom Road that smoke was coming from the hog fuel VIDLEIONE pile and the side of ON ws.com a barn. When crews abbyne arrived, they emptied the barn of the hog fuel (wood chips used for bedding) and sprayed it down. Deputy Fire Chief Ron Hull said the organic waste was stored in a bunker silo, and spontaneous combustion can be a problem.
SCHOOL FOCUS GROUPS The Abbotsford school district is holding two focus groups this week for the community to discuss language options in local schools. The sessions take place on Wednesday, April 4 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Centre of Resources for Education facility, 33299 Robertson Ave. The ministry of education requires that all students take a second- language class, and eight options are available in B.C., including French. The district wants to know which options the community would prefer be offered in Abbotsford. The Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair, held at UFV on March 28-30, featured an impressive array of projects by students in Grades 7-12. UFV has hosted the fair for the past three years, and each year it gets approximately 175 submissions from students in the region, from Langley to Boston Bar. Some were impressive feats of intellect, like Grade 11 St. John Brebeuf student Eric LeGresley’s Computational Methods for the Design and Screening of Novel Neuraminidase Inhibitors, which might someday be used to help create new viral inhibitor drugs. Organizer Dr. Ron Wilen, of UFV’s faculty of biology, said it is graduate level research being done by a Grade 11 student, and in the many years that he has been involved in science fairs, he has seen only one other at such a high level. It won both of the major awards at the regional

This year there was a rich vein of environmental conscience that ran through the projects, and Wilen estimated that about 30 per cent of the projects were on this topic. In addition to the
trips to Charlottetown, PEI the fair gives away some $42,000 in prizes and scholarships. These include a one-year scholarship to UFV valued at approximately $4,000, a pair of $2,000 scholarships from the B.C. Innovation Council and B.C. Hydro, and $1,000 from Genome B.C. The awards ceremony was held Friday night. Nine local students will be moving on to the Canada-Wide Science Fair, which this year will be held in Charlottetown on May 12-19. Five-year-old reunited with lost doll

It was supposed to be a normal visit to grandma’s. But when five-year-old Quesnel Thiessen accompanied her mom Sonia and her two siblings – 10-yearold sister McKenna and four-year-old brother Levi – to Abbotsford, a 10-day emotional ride was about to begin. As always, Quesnel brought her doll, named Leonie, with her in a stroller. The doll, with long blond hair and bright red boots, was a Christmas gift and never left the young girl’s side. But when the family stopped at the MCC Abbotsford East Thrift Store on South Fraser Way, the excitement of seeing all the toys distracted Quesnel. When the family left with grandma to go for dinner, the doll and the stroller were left behind. Marg Nickel, Quesnel’s grandma, said when the family realized what had happened, they rushed back to the store. Unfortunately, a customer had found the doll in the buggy and assuming it was for sale, took it to the register and bought it, leaving the empty stroller behind. Quesnel was devastated. “She cried all the way home and her older sister was crying too,” said Sonia. She said the hardest part

After Quesnel’s doll was left in the MCC Abbotsford East Thrift Store and mistakenly sold, manager Karen Heisler (right) and her assistant found another ‘Leonie.’ was bringing the empty stroller back with them to Coquitlam. Sonia had to sleep with Quesnel that night, to keep her settled. The next day they sent a photo of the doll to the MCC, which put up posters offering a reward for its return.
There were no responses. For most stores, the story would end there, but manager Karen Heisler said she couldn’t let the little girl down She and her assistant Geoff Kullman noticed there was a website address at the bottom of the doll photo. A quick search located an
exact replica. Because it was a “collectible” doll, the price was more than $120. It didn’t matter. Heisler and Kullman decided to purchase it. They agreed, along with Quesnel’s mom, that it was best not to tell the child it was a replacement. On Friday, as a surprise, the Thiessen family returned to the MCC, where Heisler presented the doll to Quesnel. ‘She’s come back,” said the little girl, who hugged the doll and refused to let go. Both mom and Heisler wiped away tears as the always quiet Quesnel just stood there and held on to Leonie. Sonia said the whole incident was a bonding experience. “She (Quesnel) used to walk away from me a lot when we’re in the store. So we said to her, ‘You know how we feel right now and how our hearts are broken. Imagine how Mom would feel if you walked away and I couldn’t find you, if someone took you,’” said Sonia. She thanked the staff for caring so much. Heisler said it was worth it just to see Quesnel’s face, and it just felt right to do. “Most people think that MCC just does things across the water overseas and things, and yet, we do so much locally,” she said.

A criminal harassment charge and two counts of breaching his conditions have been stayed against David Hull, the former executive director of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce. The charges were stayed last week in Abbotsford provincial court. They bring to an end court proceedings that included a trial last fall resulting in Hull’s acquittal on an assault charge. “I am glad this chapter in my life is behind me,” Hull said. “The acquittal on the assault charges upheld my innocence and, while that was personally gratifying, the entire incident has damaged my reputation and has made my personal and professional life very difficult.” A peace bond has been issued against Hull, prohibiting him from having any contact with his former girlfriend, or

Hull was suspended from his position with the chamber last June, after he was charged with assault in relation to an incident that occurred with his former live-in girlfriend, Alison Longshore. He resigned from the business organization three weeks later. At his one-day trial in December, Longshore and Hull each testified about a dispute that occurred early that morning at their residence on May 28, 2011. The judge acquitted Hull, saying there was not enough evidence to convict him of intentionally using force. The criminal harassment charge was laid in August 2011, after a man connected to Longshore alleged that Hull had sent a threatening text or email to him. The breach charges were laid in September because Hull allegedly contacted Longshore online, breaking one of the conditions of his release.

The United Way honoured several donors at its annual Spirit Awards celebration on Thursday in Abbotsford. The event at Garden Park Tower recognized the efforts of businesses and individuals in supporting the work of the United Way in the Fraser Valley. The organization, which was previously short of its $825,000 fundraising goal for its 2011 campaign, ended up pulling in just over $827,000. Kids are losing out Teachers throughout B.C. will be voting on April 17 and 18 as to what further action might be taken in their union’s dispute with the provincial government. However, students throughout the region, including Abbotsford, are already paying the price for the B.C. Teachers’ Federation’s power struggle. Teachers in some districts have already decided to withdraw their participation in extracurricular activities. In Abbotsford, some school sports teams have already dissolved. And for teams that are still running, there is a ripple effect, as they are finding it difficult to schedule games and competition meets with other schools. Abbotsford-Mission district track meets have been cancelled until further notice, and rugby season is in jeopardy as well. Should the BCTF convince a major-
ity of the province’s teachers to pull out of all extracurricular activities, the impact will be major. It will mean the end to all high school sports, drama clubs, many field trips, and possibly even graduation events. For some elite athletes, scholarships could be lost. It’s not the government that’s being punished by this. It’s the kids. And to call it unfair would be a major understatement. Some teachers agree, continuing with their volunteer services. Kudos and thanks to them. Hopefully, there will be many more later this month simply not willing to see their young charges pay the penalty in a union versus government brawl. The BCTF should be taking its battle with Victoria to the courts, leaving students with a full school experience. Kids becoming pawns in a labour dispute is just not right.

Other Hand In the centre of the table sat an elegant candle, illuminating a rather delicious-looking dinner. My first reaction to the darkness upon emerging from the basement was “romantic evening?” After being questioned whether or not all the lights downstairs had been turned off, I was informed that we were participating in the recognition of Earth Hour – Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30. As long as the television broadcasting the hockey game remained on, turning out the lights was okay by me. Saving the Earth, one miniscule step at a time, can’t be all that bad. In fact, according to BC Hydro, in just that one hour we saved 121 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.67 percent, the equivalent of turning off about nine million 12.5-watt LED
light bulbs. Just in case you are feeling smug about your contribution, the community with the highest reduction in consumption – 12.1 per cent – was Revelstoke. Pemberton had the second highest decrease. It just goes to show that, with a little effort, we can make a difference in energy conservation. Which makes me wonder what effect it would have if we cut back on consumption of other “consumables,” even for an hour. Just think of the hit to fuel companies, and to government tax revenues, if for one hour a week we all turned off our vehicle engines. A couple of million cars and trucks stopped on the side of the road for 60 minutes, and some 20 million or so litres of fuel, unless you’re driving a Chevy Volt, wouldn’t be burned and on which taxes wouldn’t be collected. Or not smoking for an hour, or denying yourself a glass or two of wine in the evening. Healthy, yes, but if that sort of consumer revolt took hold, it might send a message to the fuel companies and others who set exorbitant prices, and to governments (hello TransLink) that
we’re tired of paying ever-increasing taxes. Gasoline, for example, west of the Abbotsford boundary, carries a tax burden of 50 cents a litre. I remember when gas was 35 cents a gallon, tax included!
Otherwise, we will soon reach the tipping point on the load we are expected to financially bear... Back then we could put a buck in the tank and drive old beaters around the farm field all day. Last week, wincing with sticker shock at the price per litre, I thought it wise to put only $50 worth of fuel in the tank in hopes of the price dropping later. The next day it did, but while in the gas station, another guy came in and, with a truck as large or larger than mine, told the attendant he only wanted
$5 worth. That was 3.5 litres! I can understand economizing, but when it costs about $12 to mow my lawn, how far can you drive a truck on 3.5 litres? Perhaps we should adopt other forms of Earth Hour, and make an effort to cut back on products we use, if for no other reason than to send a message that cost increases, especially in ‘hidden’ taxes, have to be curtailed. Otherwise, we will soon reach the tipping point on the load we are expected to financially bear, and then the utopian lifestyle we lead in this supposed land of milk and honey will crash. It happened in the U.S, and is certainly happening in Europe. So I’ve decided that, while I won’t turn off almost every light like we did Saturday night, I’m going to cut way back on electricity use. And economize on my driving habits. Not sure about cutting back on cigarettes and wine, though! If everyone joined me, we might send a message. If nothing else, we’ll save a few bucks, and that can’t hurt! markrushton@abbynews.com

MLA’s move showed courage Kenny Rogers sang a ballad back in the ’80s that became number one on the music charts. The song was about a man who was wrongfully perceived as a coward in his community and as a result of consistent bullying and con-
trary to his fathers advice, he finally took single-handed action. None of his adversaries were left standing after the ensuing brawl. I think John van Dongen has been sustaining similar treatment from certain political thugs
in our community and his patience and tolerance has finally run out. Joining the Conservatives was a brilliant and refreshing strategy because Van Dongen is now a member of a party so new that it is without corruption, and best
of all, his bullies are now at his mercy. By not resigning van Dongen has more than a year left to continue serving the good people in Abbotsford South with the same quality service that he provided during his 17 years in public

Van Dongen owes apology I voted for John van Dongen and supported him in the last four elections. It was a shock and very disappointing to learn that he had crossed the floor last Monday and decided to join a fringe party for whom I never voted. I made it plain to Mr. van Dongen, months ago, that if he ran as a BC Conservative, I would not vote for him. That still stands.
A vote for the BC Conservative party is like a vote for the NDP. John van Dongen pretty well had a guaranteed seat in the legislature as a B.C. Liberal. He will have to fight for it now. I think he owes an apology to his many faithful constituents for his action. Jack Robertson

I have lived in Abbotsford for 10 years now and during that last five of it the trees have systematically disappeared acre by acre. Gone is the bird and wildlife habitat. Gone is the sound barrier from the now visible freeway. Gone are mature trees. Allow me to give you some facts. “A single mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 48 lbs/year and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support two human beings. “One acre of trees annually consumes the amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to that produced by driving an average car for 26,000 miles. News wins five editorial awards The Abbotsford News has been honoured with five industry awards in the 2011 editorial competition held by the Local Media Association (formerly the Suburban Newspapers of America). Reporter Vikki Hopes won first place for Best Investigative Reporting, for her story on the “Single Parent Food Bank” an unauthorized charity collecting money in the Fraser Valley area. Hopes also received a second place honour in the category Best Breaking News Story, for her coverage of the death of Jonathan Bacon, a high-profile Abbotsford gangster who was gunned down in Kelowna. News editor Andrew Holota earned a second place award in the category of Best Column Writing, for his humorous series on couples’ rela-
tionships and what makes good men and women. The News also received a secondplace finish for Best Front Page, which was a selection of three separate pages. Adrian McNair, who writes for the Abbotsford News and the Mission City Record, won a third-place finish in the category of Best In-Depth Reporting for his features on the future of the HST. The LMA is a nonprofit, professional trade association of community and suburban newspapers and is comprised of more than 2,000 newspapers across the U.S. and Canada.

There’s an argument to be made that the Abbotsford Heat’s 4-3 overtime victory over the Chicago Wolves on Friday evening was the most important regularseason win in franchise history. The timing of it, in every respect, was sublime. The Heat desperately needed the two points – locked, as they are, in a dogfight for a playoff berth. Beyond that, they turned in an exceedingly entertaining performance in front of a sellout crowd – the fourth in franchise history, as 7,044 paying customers made the trek to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. The triumph, moreover, reversed a pattern that has seen the Heat struggle mightily at home against the Vancouver Canucks’ farm teams (the Manitoba Moose in 2009-10 and 2010-11, and the Wolves this season). Coming into Friday’s game, the Baby Canucks were 9-1-0-1 in Abbotsford. Add it all up, and there were a lot of smiles on the faces of Heat players, coaches and staff in the aftermath. “The atmosphere in here with the full barn, it would be great if we could do that every night,” Heat forward Jon Rheault marveled.
“Probably the majority of them were Canucks fans, and it’s a little different. But energy is energy, and when this place is full, it’s a lot of fun. “I thought we responded well to that – we stuck to the game plan, and it feels good to have success against that team.” Brian Connelly played the hero for the Heat, scoring the game-winner with 11.9 seconds left in OT. The speedy defenceman jumped into the rush, took a lovely cross-ice pass from Ben Walter, and buried a top-corner wrist shot over the glove of Wolves goalie Matt Climie. The goal represented a bit of redemption for the offensive-minded blueliner – he struggled with defensive-zone turnovers in the early going, and Heat head coach Troy Ward benched him for a big chunk of the first period. It was also Connelly’s first goal in 23 games with the Heat. “I’ve just been trying to create shots and opportunities, and they haven’t gone in,” said Connelly, who was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks organization in a trade for Brendan Morrison in late January. “It’s good to kind of get that off my back, and hopefully it springboards me for the rest of the season.” The Heat weathered a rare power-play outburst from the Wolves Continued on A18

The bad news, from the Abbotsford Pilots' perspective, is that they fell short in their quest for the Pacific International Junior Hockey League title. The Delta Ice Hawks saw to that, edging the Pilots 4-3 on Friday to complete a 4-2 victory in the junior B league's championship series. The good news, though, is that the Pilots are still in the running for a provincial title, by virtue of the fact they host the Cyclone Taylor C u p tourn a ment at MSA Arena next week, April 12-15. That they'll get another crack at their rivals from Delta doesn't hurt, either. "We pushed them quite far," Pilots head coach Jim Cowden said, alluding to the fact that his team's losses in Game 5 and 6 were both by one goal. "I felt that if it wasn't for a couple breaks, we would have won the series. All it was, was a couple breaks." On Friday in Abbotsford, the Ice Hawks built a 3-1 lead midway through the second period on goals by Kody Botterill, Alex Martin and Aaron Merrick, with Brett Kolins replying for the Pilots. "We just didn't get the breaks," reiterated Cowden, whose team outshot Delta 40-32. "Even at the end, I don't know how the puck stayed out. We were all over them.” The four-team Cyclone Taylor Cup event will also feature the Victoria Cougars and the Beaver Valley Nitehawks. The Cougars won the Vancouver Island league title, while the Nitehawks are the Kootenay league champs.

BUKER Kathleen Norine (1916-2012) Peacefully at age 96, Kathleen (Kay) Norine passed away at Pleasantview Care Home, Mission. Born in Hillsdown Alberta, Kay has lived in the Mission area for over 80 years. Mom’s large family were her pride and joy. Predeceased by husband Clarke (1994), son Phillip (1987) and daughter Judy (2004). Lovingly remembered by daughters Barbara Titford, Betty (Bryan) Johnstone, Lynn (Bob) Scarrow, Hazel [Ted] Horn, son in law Dennis Skipper, daughter in law Sandy Buker, 16 grand children, 32 great grand children, 5 great great grand children, and sisters Elsie Zieffle and Ina Frasch. Our dearly beloved mother passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer. She rejoins her husband of 53 years Frank Kuva taken in 2001 from cancer. Also pre-deceased by her 3 brothers Thomas, Charles and Robert, Loretta is survived by her brother William and 2 sisters Anne and Irene. Loretta was born in La Fleche, SK on October 28, 1927 and moved with her family to Abbotsford in September 1933 to their 10 acre farm at 790 McKenzie Road which remained in the family until 2004. Loretta was a pioneer of Abbotsford. She attended school at Huntingdon, Upper Sumas and P.S.H.S. After graduating from the Provincial Mental (Essendale) Hospital nursing program, she married Frank Kuva and they moved to Newton to raise their three children Kenneth (Marilyn), Gerald (Leslie) and Patricia. After twenty years they moved back to Abbotsford to their hobby farm on Mt. Lehman Road and then in retirement to their home in Abbotsford where she enjoyed gardening, walking, music and houseplants. She is sadly missed by her 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services were held at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Abbotsford. Robert (Robin) Albert Wright August 27, 1951 - March 23, 2012
Robert (Robin) Wright of Abbotsford passed away peacefully after a brief illness at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Vernon. Robin grew up in Abbotsford, BC. He attended Elementary and Secondary school on a modi¿ed program. At the age of 23 he moved to the Vernon area and was a resident of Cedar house for many years. He will be sadly missed by his sisters Diane Allen, Denise Wright (Rennie Sirianni), Darcie Wright (Jim Leppard), brother Craig (Janice) Wright, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Sandra, father Robert and mother Charlotte. Many thanks to staff members from Twin Cedars and Cedar House for their care and support of our dear brother. The family would also like to thank Dr. S. Friesen and Dr.B.Poulin and the nursing staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital for Robin’s care during his illness.
