Purden Road connector one step closer to reality DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter Monday, council was asked to throw their support behind an alternate route to Wells and Barkerville. Wells mayor Robin Sharpe and CRD Area C director John Massier presented the proposed road – the Purden Lake Connector. The Purden Connector Proposal highlights three key reasons for a new circle route. “Our biggest concern in Wells is emergency access to get people out if the highway is blocked,” Sharpe said. “If there’s a fire on the way there, there’s only one other route out and

this summer it was closed for five months. “I think we need a second emergency access route into Wells and Barkerville.” Another reason Wells and Barkerville representatives are lobbying for this new route is an increase in tourism. The pair explained the new circle route would open possibilities for driving tours as well as wilderness viewing tours. The new route would grant the area more recreational access as well as increased economic opportunities for First Nations. “This route will create big tourism opportunities,” Massier explained.

“People can come down from Prince George, out to Purden Lake, down to Bowron Lake, out to Purden Lake, down to Wells, out to Quesnel and do a circle tour instead of coming down and back out each time.” Sharpe and Massier pointed to a series of reviews and reports conducted, four since 2004. These reports brought forward issues such as environmental damage, community consultation and First Nations consultation. These preliminary reports showed the road upgrade would cause the least environmental damage and will require minimal cost and maintenance.

The preliminary First Nations consultation (conducted in 2010) drew interest from four bands, Lheidli T’enneh, Lhtako Dene, Nazko and Simpcw. The report shows the bands have expressed desire for “interest in wildlife and environmental protection, high road standards, high recognition in Barkerville and commercial opportunities.” A phase-in option (plan b) would see the existing road widened to eight meters, graveled and reshaped. This option would require an investment to the tune of approximately $1 million. The new route would use existing logging roads

to connect roads along the Bowron River. “The route in question that needs repair is about 15 kilometers starting near the end of the existing Bowron Lake Road and continuing downstream along the Bowron River where it intersects with an existing logging road,” Massier said. That logging road then continues 64 km to Hwy 16 just east of Purden Lake. Massier and Sharpe highlighted the fact that most infrastructure needed is already in place, mainly two bridges, one which requires minor redecking. During the meeting, Councillor Ed Coleman showed interest in re-

endorsing this project and Councillor Scott Elliott reiterated the need for a secondary route out of Wells. “It’s a no brainer as far as community safety is concerned,” Elliott said. “Something needs to be done.” Councillor Mike Cave took particular interest in the tourism opportunities. “These back roads are how we showcase how good British Columbia is,” he said. “It’s not by driving down the highway, you see it by driving down these back roads.” Council voted to bring this matter into a regular council meeting, check future issues of the Observer for updates.

The Quesnel Community Foundation continues to be a major supporter of the area’s non-profit sector. Last Saturday, $34,450 in grants was awarded to the following organizations: 1. $700 to Big Brothers Big Sisters for funding for a binding machine and laminator. This grant has been made possible through the generous support of the Warden Family Fund. 2. $2,000 to the Bouchie Lake Recreation Commission for signage for the Claymine Trails. This grant has been made possible through the generous support of the CRD Area B Fund.

3. $2,000 to Correlieu Secondary School to purchase a defibrilator. This grant has been made possible through the generous support of the Glenn and Loretta Barr Fund. 4. $3,100 to the Gold Pan Home Emergency Response Society to upgrade Lifeline units. This grant has been made possible through the generous support of the City of Quesnel Fund. 5. $5,000 to Island Mountain Arts for an ArtsWells Pre-Festival Musical Boot Camp. This grant has been made possible in part through the generous support of the CRD Area I Fund.

Island Mountain Arts also received $2,400 from the Island Mountain Arts Fund. 6. $2,500 to the Parkland Community Association for wheelchair accessible washrooms at Kosta’s Cove. This grant has been made possible in part through the generous support from the CRD Area A Fund. 7. $2,500 to the Quesnel and District Hospice Palliative Care Society for purchase of a Life Chair for the Hospice Unit at Dunrovin Park Lodge. This grant has been made possible in part through the generous support of the CRD Area C Fund.

SPCA seeking information The BC SPCA is seeking the public’s help in identifying the owner of two badly neglected dogs left tied to the gate of the Quesnel SPCA shelter between the hours of 8:30 p.m. March 19 and 6:30 a.m. March 20. Branch manager, Shawna Spencer said the two dogs, both female senior husky mixes, are approximately 12-years old. Now named Faith and Hope by SPCA staff, both dogs are suffering from malnutrition and dehydration, dental problems and arthritis. Hope is severely emaciated and had to be rushed to the

vet for immediate care. “The staff and I cannot understand why someone would abandon these two sweet girls in the freezing temperatures to fend for themselves,” Spencer said. “Judging by their condition they have been neglected or suffering from illness for quite some time.” Spencer says one dog was wearing a collar and attached to the gate, while the other had a leash wrapped around it neck in order to secure it. BC SPCA staff are hoping someone will recognize these dogs and come forward with any information they

may have on the owner(s). All information will be kept confidential. “Hope and Faith are now getting excellent care and we will continue to assure they receive all the medical attention they need,” Spencer added. The BC SPCA is also grateful for any donations that can be directed towards the care of Hope and Faith and others rescued by the SPCA. City raises daffodil ﬂag April 2 the city of Quesnel is joining the Canadian Cancer Society national daffodil campaign by raising the Canadian Cancer Society flag, proclaiming April as Daffodil Month and April 27 as Daffodil Day. “We’ve all been touched by cancer. In fact, two in five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and one in four will die,” Canadian Cancer Society spokesperson says Cathy Briggs, said. “That’s why we’re asking British Columbians to join the fight and wear the daffodil pin this April.” “The City of Quesnel is proud to proclaim April as Daffodil Month,” Mayor Mary Sjostrom said. “We encourage all citizens in the city to show their support for those affected by cancer and to remember those lost by

wearing a daffodil pin. What better way to declare our part in this fight than to wear it on our lapels.” This April, the Society is asking all Canadians to join the fight and wear the daffodil pin, a symbol of support for those affected by cancer and a remembrance of those lost to the disease. Daffodil Day, April 27, the Society is encouraging people to mark the day by doing something special for someone living with cancer or to contribute in some way to fight against the disease. Daffodil Day events will be happening throughout British Columbia. “We want people who have been affected by cancer to know they are not alone,” Board Chair of the Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon Division, Lorraine Grant said. “We want them to know

that they are supported and there are support services to help along the way.” Donations from every pin go toward support services including programs for individuals seeking cancer information, emotional support and camps for youth and families. The Society also provides transportation services and lodge accommodations along with limited, shortterm financial assistance for treatment-related transportation and accommodation. Volunteers and staff deliver cancer support programs, cancer prevention information, advocate for healthier communities and fundraise for cancer research. hances are, if you attended school in Quesnel sometime within the last 35+ years, you would have had the opportunity to participate in the school downhill skiing program. We think the school ski program offered at Troll Resort started before 1977 but none of us here remember exactly when it began. What we do know, is the school downhill ski program has been one of those positive school-community partnerships that has provided an introduction to a healthy, individual sport to literally thousands of Quesnel students. Watching beginning skiers progress through ski lessons and practice sessions is truly amazing. On day one, actually getting buckled into boots and securing those boots into ski bindings is a small victory. Maintaining balance long enough to slip-slide over to the ski-school gathering place is a big second step. By the end of lesson 1, many of the firsttime skiers who were nervous about making their way up the bunny hill via the tow rope are proudly displaying their new skills as they ski down that same hill.

WE LCOME! School Notes School District #28 After lesson 2, most students are able to enjoy the thrill of skiing down trails such as Snow White and Bambi. By the third or fourth day, beginner skiers have been transformed; students display confidence as they ski in complete control from the top of the hill. Troll ski hill is a very happy place for Quesnel students participating in the school ski program. You see lots of smiles and hear lots of laughter. You also notice the lodge is fairly empty of students throughout the day, because they are up on the slopes getting exercise and fresh air in the company of fellow skiers. By the end of Grade 7, many students who participated in the school program for several years have developed the skills they need to be confident, lifelong skiers. The sense of accomplishment and pride these students experience is a testimony to the importance of

programs like this. The staff at the Troll Resort ski school has gone above and beyond for Quesnel students over the years. Safety has always been a priority. Students are well-versed in mountain safety before buckling into a boot. Ski school staff members have come into schools and given lessons in safety and pre-skiing fitness. They have been responsive to students with physical challenges and have adapted equipment so that all students could participate. Equipment is always well-maintained and double and triplechecked before it is handed off to students. Students are not allowed to participate unless they have the appropriate safety gear (helmets for instance) which is always available on site. This school ski

program is made available to our students through some pretty amazing community support. The cost of the school program at Troll Resort is very affordable; ski lessons, equipment rental and lift tickets are made available to students at greatly reduced costs. School Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) have been very supportive of the program and have fundraised so that all students could participate, regardless of circumstances. Students from Bouchie Lake School had their last ski day on March 15, marking the end of another successful ski season for 14 District schools. More work needed: Simpson Recent changes to the DriveABLE program are welcomed, but more work must be done to ensure testing is accessible to seniors in the Cariboo, says Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson. With these changes, seniors will no longer lose their driving privileges solely on the basis of an in-office computer assessment. â€œThese are constructive first steps in changing the program to address concerns raised by seniors,â€? Simpson said. â€œMy office has a number of cases involving seniors who are having challenges with the present computer test-

ing and these changes made by government will provide additional testing options for seniors not comfortable with computers.â€? Although there are more testing options, access to these tests is still a major challenge for Cariboo seniors. â€œWhile it is important that seniors are tested to ensure their safety and the safety of fellow drivers, testing must be done in a fair and accessible way,â€? Simpson said. â€œCurrently seniors in the Cariboo have to travel out of the region to be tested in either Prince George or Kamloops and this is unac-

ceptable.â€? Secrets T

his case still stinks. The words are those of Leonard Krog, the B.C. NDP’s attorney-general critic. The case to which he refers is the still-unresolved BC Rail scandal, in which former ministerial aides Dave Bassi and Bobby Virk pleaded guilty to charges of breach of trust. The charges were amended counts stemming from the investigation into the bribing of government officials by lobbyists who wanted access to secret documents relating to government’s sale of BC Rail. Despite their guilty pleas on the eve of the start of their trial, the B.C. Liberal government paid Bassi and Virk’s legal bill — but no B.C. Liberal has ever explained why. Why would taxpayers foot the bill for two men who admitted their roles in a bribery scandal? It doesn’t make sense, which is one of the reasons cited by Abbotsford-South MLA John van Dongen in his decision this week to quit the B.C. Liberals and join the B.C. Conservatives. Van Dongen has even gone so far as to hire North Vancouver lawyer Roger McConchie to look into the unanswered questions relating to this sordid tale. Yet, Premier Christy Clark —who was deputy premier at the time of the scandal in 2003 — rejected again this week calls for a public inquiry into the matter. Why? Shouldn’t the premier – who has professed innocence in the case and, indeed, who was long ago cleared of any wrongdoing employed by Basi and Virk – want to know why the B.C. Liberal government of the day agreed to pay the legal bills of two men who admitted guilt? The fact this government refuses to divulge such information to those who paid the tab is astonishing. A public inquiry would, at the least, enable the public to finally hear from those in government above Basi and Virk — including Clark and thenfinance minister Gary Collins (whose ministerial aide was Basi) — and, ultimately, lead to the unanswered question: Why did we pay the legal tabs of criminals? –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

And he’s absolutely right that we used to go to action movies way back when and now I never want to. unhealthy snacks, which leaves my husband trying to keep me awake so I don’t miss anything, or trying to keep me awake so I can regret the bad movie I selected. But, to me, a bad comedy is still better than a good action, just like a bad drama is still better than a good horror. Normal people with less discriminating tastes would disagree. “Why don’t you choose the movie one time and let him choose the next time?” our pal suggested one day. “Or… “ I said. “You two could see the boy movies together and I’ll do anything else.” But it’s rare for my husband to go to the movies with his guy friends, and if he does, they’ll always sit with an empty seat between them. ately I have been asking myself why am I writing this column. With the exception of the odd light hearted article, most of my articles have been about warning or exposing as much as I understand of what the dangers and wrongs in this society. The days I was capable being president of an environmental group have gone. At this point in my life, I don’t think I can handle the physical or mental stress that goes with this type of job. All that is left from that era are the articles written for this paper between 1984 and 1995. I am sorry to say if I would change names and dates, they would still be valid today. In other words, not very much if anything has changed. There is no secondary industry as was promised,

From Within the amount of people employed by the forest industry has dwindled drastically due to modernization, the export of raw logs has increased substantially and pesticides and herbicides are still used despite their known dangerous qualities. When I think of all the time and money I spent traveling from Bowron to the Ministry of Forest building in Quesnel and compare it to the way it is now, I can not pound my chest and say it has made a difference, nor can I say all the protest marches, statements in

my art and newspaper articles in Victoria and here have made a difference, at least as far as I know. It being cabin fever time when I thought about all this made me ask myself “why the hell am I doing this?” Deep down I must have known the answer and that is I cannot accept immorality and keep my mouth shut especially when it hurts people or animals. The root probably lies in my experience during and after WWII. Having lived through fear, hunger and seen the atrocities of war between my seventh and 13th year and having seen the cemeteries where thousands and thousands of Canadian soldiers are buried is one thing. To find out over time that big foreign corporations made millions during the war by trading via Sweden

and Switzerland who were not invaded by Germany made my blood boil with disgust. The mistrust for big corporations and governments that support these corporations goes a long way back and has grown over time. Having family and friends with children and knowing what I have seen makes it immoral for me to not try to change things. When we just look at what happened in Canada over the last 50 years, it is scary. Corporate executives who earned 20 times more than the average Canadian now make 220 times more by doing the same amount of work with the same responsibilities. Taxes in the 1960’s were almost equally shared between corporations and the general population, now we pay 80 per cent and the corporate tax is 20 per cent and that is

not counting subsidies. The free trade agreement has cost the average Canadians dearly in jobs because all too many manufacturing plants went to third world countries with minimum wages and often inhumane working conditions. It is disgusting that they charge the same prices as when they were produced here. Mulroney came close to being charged with treason while Chretien sold us out by making water a commodity instead of a human right. Harper says it is OK to sell asbestos to third world countries where people work in that stuff with bare feet, no masks and no gloves. Harper also pulled us out of the Kyoto accord, is in China to generate more business, the country he, until very recently insisted should

improve its human rights. The tar sands is another immoral and black mark against Canada and despite his promise of jobs, the real profits and jobs go to the US and China where the sludge is refined, I could go on and on, but I think this is enough to get the picture. I don’t want my children to grow up or live in a polluted, impoverished corporate–run Canada. I think we are on the way to that and I feel inside me that I have to try to make even a little difference to prevent that. The seniors in this town have woken up and are starting to make changes. It is my hope the rest of Quesnel will follow. Change is necessary – why not start in Quesnel? P.S: It would be nice to see a response. Bert deVink is a long-time Observer contributor.

lison Schofield is excited to be celebrating her first anniversary smokefree. As a 30-year smoker, Schofield said she first took up the habit because, back then, it was a smoking culture. “We were cowboys, it was still cool to smoke back then, all our parents smoked and the image of the Marlboro man was big,” she said. “At the rodeo, there would be guys sitting along the fence, smoking.” As time went on, Schofield knew smoking wasn’t good for her, but it wasn’t until she had children of her own that the full realization of her bad habit hit home. “When my child nicknamed me Smoky Smokerson and told me I smelled, that was the worst,” Schofield said. She said she could put up with the peer pressure to quit and even when her dad struggled and struggled and finally quit, it didn’t phase her. “He had triple bypass surgery and also has COPD, but still I didn’t quit,” she said. QuitNow nicotine intervention counsellor Susan MacNeill had visited

Schofield’s workplace, McDonalds where she is the restaurant manager. The program offered assistance to any employee looking to kick the habit. It was almost a year later that the 42-year-old had her moment. “I was driving with my family and told my husband to pull over,” she said. “I decided then and there I was quiting and made the decision to do it with Champix.” Prescription therapies don’t contain nicotine, but work on the brain to manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings and reduce the urge to smoke. “My mind was in a good place, I felt empowered with not smoking,” she said. “When I decided to quit, that was it – even when I thought I wanted a cigarette, it wasn’t worth what I was gaining by not smoking. “Quitting smoking was so empowering, I was determined to succeed.”

Schofield admitted she had attempted to quit several times before but in reality was stealing a smoke every chance she could. “I really only quit once, this time,” she said. And the benefits are enormous she added. “I’m so much calmer, I can reason with people. I’m a much more positive person, I sleep better, am far more social – I don’t have to run outside for a cigarette, there’s no compulsion to smoke.” One benefit she never even considered was time management. “Every time I would go outside to smoke it would be about 20 minutes and even if I only smoked five cigarettes a day, that’s an hour wasted that I had to make up. I don’t have to work late any more.” Schofield admitted she had a pack-aday habit and said she would be saving

a lot of money but she chose to buy herself a brand new vehicle. “If I can offer advice to smokers, it’s to not beat themselves up over smoking, when you’re ready, you’ll quit,” she said. “Be happy about every cigarette you choose not to have, celebrate those unsmoked cigarettes.” Scholfield said she quit for herself, not anyone else. However, her family is very happy she kicked the habit. “My husband hugs me a lot and is very proud of me but I think it’s because I don’t stink anymore,” she said with a laugh. “I’ve put on a little weight but my kids said they’d rather have me fat and alive than smelly and dead.” Schofield swears she’s not one of those reformed smokers who can’t tolerate other smokers but does admit she can’t handle the smell. “I just remove myself, I don’t preach,” she said. “My sniffer is on overtime and my taste buds are coming back.” Anyone looking to quit can access free cessation aids through the QuitNow program, visit quitnow.ca to find out more.

Director Roman Polanski returns with Carnage, a caustic and witty new film which is an adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s 2009 Tonywinning play God of Carnage and features Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz. Carnage is a captivating and explosively comic study in the tension between civilized surface and savage instinct. Set in contemporary Brooklyn, Carnage centres on two couples who meet to discuss a playground fight between two of their children. Harried corporate lawyer Alan and his putupon wife Nancy, a successful broker, visit the apartment of Michael, an amiable wholesaler and Penelope, a self-consciously liberal writer, to discuss, logically and amiably, how to deal with the boys. However, as the evening wears on, the parents become increasingly childish and combative, words become weapons, prejudices rise to the surface and the meeting soon collapses into a storm of anger, recriminations, drunkenness and violence. Unfolding in real time, Polanski nimbly keeps the action flowing with an active camera that avoids the feeling of a play captured on film. Instead, its single-set confinement (the story essentially takes place over 80 minutes, in one location) recalls Polanski’s similarly claustrophobic studies of urban alienation and psychic disintegration in Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby and The Tenant. It is also a master class in acting and it’s pure pleasure to watch the thespians one-upmanship as each character strives to dominate a deteriorating scenario. Carnage is ultimately a dark comedy about losing one’s manners. Alternately uproarious and devastating, it convincingly lays bare the darker tendencies of human nature. BOUCHIE LAKE DINNER The annual Bouchie Lake dinner was held March 19 at the Bouchie Lake Hall, attended by 175 people with 25 helpers. Those who attended give a big collective THANK YOU to all who had a hand in making this popular dinner possible. Colourful table cloths and flowers provided a spring-like ambiance as people joined friends for an enjoyable roast beef dinner cooked and served by volunteers. the first dinner and the event has steadily increased, with 250 being the highest number of seniors. They began in 1982 to honour pioneers of Bouchie Lake for contributions toward their community. It began as a Christmas turkey dinner and after three years the luncheon was moved to March and is now enjoyed by upwards of 250 people. It has always been entirely hosted by volunteers. It’s founding organizers were Pat Klassen, Tony Klassen (deceased), Elnora Joaquin (deceased), and Geraldine Johnson. Gloria Kolenchuk joined the committee in 1986, Dagmar and Dan Giesbrecht and Bill and Marita Solowoniuk joined in the fun shortly after. Some of the people are still involved and over the years many more have contributed. There has never been a fee to attend the luncheon but about 10 years ago the organization decided that if people wanted to donate non-perishable items for the Food Bank they could. Jennifer Johnson and Angela Mezzatesta did the fundraising. It has become an event which seniors from all over Quesnel now enjoy. Entertainment was provided by harpists

Vivian Russell, Mary Ann Sturdy, Heather Olson and Linda Davies of the Northern Lights Harps, music by Cary Lamarche and son Denver and the Seniors Campfire Singers. Gloria Kolenchuk presented 30 carnations to winners of door prizes. Phil and Rosa Gamache were recognized as the couple attending who had been married the longest – 68 years. A total of 15 boxes of non-perishable food was collected for the Food Bank. Left over food from the kitchen went to Amata Transition House.

While the Bouchie Lake Recreation Commission sponsored the hall, all other expenses were covered by businesses and fundraising.

The Power of Independence The last day before the Legislature broke for spring break a cabinet minister was forced to resign his seat due to misconduct. The ﬁrst day back after the break a former cabinet minister resigned from the Liberal caucus, claiming the Liberal Party has lost its integrity. It’s not a fun time for the Liberal brand in BC. John van Dongen’s departure from the Liberal Party and caucus has once again proﬁled the unhealthy nature of party discipline and the demands placed on party MLAs to put the interests of their political brand over those of their constituents or the province as a whole. In this case, MLA van Dongen’s departure from the Liberal caucus has allowed him to raise publicly the questions he was raising privately (for some time) within his caucus: questions about the Premier’s involvement in the sale of BC Rail and why the Liberal Party had taxpayers foot the bill for Basi and Virk’s defense during the BC Rail trial.

As MLA van Dongen will soon ﬁnd out, being an Independent will give him many more opportunities to speak in the Legislature than he experienced as a government member. He will also have the opportunity to speak more freely and frequently about issues that matter to his constituents and on public policy issues that matter to him and British Columbians. Rather than simply lobbing partisan bombs, Independent MLAs can use each piece of legislation and budget debate as an opportunity to speak to the real issues that matter to British Columbians. We can also offer detailed and constructive suggestions to government publicly (and privately) in a way that opposition MLAs are precluded from doing because their primary job is to bring the government down in the next election. There is power in being an Independent MLA -- power that comes from being unfettered from the partisanship and power politics that permeates the party system. It takes a lot more work to maximize the power this freedom brings, but I’ve found my work as an Independent MLA inﬁnitely more rewarding than when I was working for a political brand.

Coach: Carmen has been strong all season, and went into the competition quite confident, said Nadin Her ‘3 competition points’ were going to be hard for many to catch up to. She sealed the deal with a great skate & her personal best score. Huang was happy with her performance during the competition.

Coach: Vanessa decided to join the Super Series ‘race’ in late December, Nadin said. The three competitions she was able to earn points at showed her getting stronger and higher points each competition.

Carmen: My goals for my points was thirty, and I got 31 so I was really happy. I was also happy that I had a four point lead over the person in second.

Coach: Selena had 2 very strong skates during the season which had her ranked in 2nd going into the competition. She did not have a personal best skate, but again, her points were strong enough throughout the season to hold a spot at the top.

Coach: Cassie had a strong season also in which her points were getting higher and higher each competition. She too was going into the Super Series final with some very competitive points. Though she didn’t attain a personal best score at the competition, it was not her lowest score either and within the Super Series race, her 3 best competition points were high enough to rank her 3rd in BC.

Selena: My jumps weren’t really there, they weren’t very good, but the rest of my solo was good. I was really happy about that. My interpretive, I’ve skated it better before, but I’m still happy with that too.

Cassandra: My interpretive was good, I got second. The solo wasn’t as good as it was earlier, so I got ninth.”

From tentative team to tournament contenders JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Quesnel midget Thunder came just short of medalling in the provincials last weekend. "It was a very good outcome for the year," Peter Andrews, team coach said. The Thunder started the

season only tentatively a team, with only ten skaters and a goalie that had only played for one year. "When I started the year, we didn't even know if we had a team," Andrews said. Despite a tenuous beginning the team grew and improved to challenge provincial level competi-

tion. The team was able to handle all but the South Okanagan team in the round robin, taking their other four games with at least a three goal lead, including their last round-robin game against Kerry Park, to whom they would lose third place to in the finals.

When they hit Kelowna in the semi-finals, who would go on to win the tournament, the tired Thunder stumbled. "It was the second game that day and the guys just got tired," Andrews said. Quesnel had just finished beating Kerry Park in the morning and only made it through two

periods before hitting a wall. Going into the final period Quesnel was only down by one. Then hit a wall of exhaustion in the third and allowed Kelowna four unanswered goals. Their final game against Kerry Park for third was close right up until the end, with the Thunder

down 2-1 until the end when they pulled their goalie to try to tie it up but Kerry Park managed a shot on the empty net, which nailed the game shut at 3-1. Despite the hard loss Andrew was proud of his team. "They played their best."

Local girls win provincials via PG JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Short of a team of their own, a couple of local girls went up to Prince George to play hockey and ended up going all the way to the top. The Prince George Female Bantam Cougars won their provincials. Being that there’s no women’s hockey program here, Ava Keis and Sydney Jordan traveled to Prince George to play hockey once they hit bantam. Though the girls have a good time playing for the Cougars, not playing for the hometown team does have its drawbacks. “It’s a little weird,” Keis said. “The guys (the bantam Thunder) won their provincials and everyone knew they had won but no one knew that Syd and I had won.” Despite the strange disconnect, the two girls have settled in well

to the Prince George team and the long drives. “I kinda got used to the drives,” Keis said. “And I’ve become really good friends with (the team).” Keis has been on the team for three years, while Jordan was new to the team but it was the first provincial win for both girls. “It was a really good experience,” Jordan said. The Cougars dominated the provincials, managing to win every game of the tournament. Keis was a key part of the team, managing to score in three of five games in the tournament. Jordan is looking forward to a couple more years representing Quesnel with the bantam Cougars, while Keis has finished off her bantam days with a bang and is now hoping to make the midget Cougars next year.

Snowshoes Like a lynx, I pad along Atop the deep'ning snow; A swish, swish the only song, While I step, heel and toe. With a rhythm, now, I pace; In the sun, thru the shade. Of the spruce and of the lace, My pair were nimbly made. Cur'ous lines are left behind, A printing there upon; Marking clear, for all to find, Just where that I have gone.

That is strong, light and free; Of long lasting harmony, Of perfect unity. For a moment, I can see A glimpse into the past. From the strong but limber tree, They made a thing to last. From a hide of caribou, They cut the leather thong; Waiting out the snow that blew, So fiercely, all night long.

Long distances I cover, Far in among the pine. Over the ground I hover, Above the log and vine.

Then, at last, they looked with pride Upon the thing they made. And when it had set and dried, They were no more afraid.

I like to share, while silent, The thoughts of long ago; When the Ancient People went, As I do on the snow.

For, they were free to explore. No more would they be bound. They could venture out the door To see what would be found.

Then, the People made the frame And laced it all up tight. The method is still the same That puts our feet to flight.

When I strap my babiche on, I walk the Trail of Time. When the leather web I don, I enter the sublime.

To School by Streetcar I rode on the streetcar to school every day, One couldn’t walk as it was a long way. I started grade one, at five years of age. To ride on the streetcar was really the rage. Lots of school kids ride, it’s like riding a bus, It goes right to the school without any fuss. It cost only a penny for a one way trip, Even in those days, it did a fair clip. It rambled and rumbled along on the rails, It’s better than walking when everything fails, You arrive at the school and you’re even on time, You could ride for a week on only a dime. It was always noisy, you had to

talk loud, Because it was early, school kids were the crowd. You just rolled along at the same old pace, Arriving at school, the big learning place. While returning home from school one day, It appeared dad’s car on the tracks did lay. The streetcar hit it with one big crash, Making our old car just a pile of trash! I could see dad’s heart had really sunk, To see his car just a heap of junk. Getting around now became a chore, As our car was wrecked and there was no more. Elaine Couldwell

Barkerville Barkerville is old and quaint, Some buildings look like they need paint. That olden look is what you see, And that’s the way it’s supposed to be. The streets once busy are now laid back, Jobs and people are what they lack. This place was booming while mining gold, A beautiful city so I’ve been told. In winter time it’s much at rest, While summer time it’s at its best. They have visitors, near and far, Mining for gold on the river bar. People come for their sour dough bread, It’s so tasty with a little spread. The Theatre Royal has a show each day, This show is really worth the stay. The paper boy is out on the street,

Selling this paper is a daily treat. You can buy a paper or shop in a store, It’s so much fun you’ll be back for more. It’s hard to believe it was a very large city, Now it’s a ghost town, and that’s a pity. When the gold was gone, this place closed down, Making it nothing but an old ghost town. Come to Barkerville, have a look around, See for yourself if there’s gold to be found. There’s things to see and things to do, But you won’t be rich when the day is through. Elaine Couldwell

nother week and another Legion Lines to update you on all the happenings in and around your beloved Legion. If you were around last week you would have seen that the place was hopping with the LA serving meals in the Hall to some very hungry Pee Wee Hockey Tournament players and families. The LA wanted me to be sure and make a note of how pleasantly surprised they all were at how well mannered and behaved these players were. They said it was a pleasure to serve them and would not hesitate to help out the next time they hold a tournament. What a fine representation of our youth. While we are talking about the LA – I think it is about time we let everyone know who exactly are your executive on this wellrespected organization. President this year is Rose Bergesen; 1st Vice President is Elaine Berry; 2nd Vice President is Jean Kodiak; Treasurer – Una Tracy and Secretary is Lil Anderson. These wonderful ladies and all

LEGION LINES the members of the LA do an incredible job for the Legion. Without their continued dedication, devotion and generosity, our Legion would not be the place it is today. This Friday the Legion is hosting it’s wonderful Prime Rib Buffet from noon until 5 pm. The cost is only $12.95 and last time this was sold out – so don’t delay – come in and enjoy this delicious buffet. And while you are chowing down on that great meal you may want to get in on the generous offerings at the Meat Draw. There will be three turkeys given away on Friday and four turkeys on Saturday. There are extra bonus draws and get this, at no extra cost. The LA have been helping out with the meat draw and their help is very much appreciated. Easter Saturday there

will be double draws so this means seven draws with a bonus. These are extremely popular and if the laughter is any indication, they are also a lot of fun to be a part of. Come on down and enjoy the fun. On April 14 there will be a dinner and dance in the lounge. Cost for this event is only $15. Tickets will be available from the lounge shortly so hurrying in as seating is limited. April 29 which is a Sunday – there will be a fundraiser for Arlene Loxterkamp – this will be held from 2 – 7 pm – all bands and musicians are welcome. All admissions collected will go towards helping Arlene, who is one of this year’s Hall of Fame inductee. Arlene, unfortunately is experiencing some serious health issues. We hope this helps is some small way to ease her mind at this stressful time. Watch for updates on the local media, as well as posters. The next General Meeting is on Tuesday – April 3 at 7 p.m. in the Hall. Please plan on attending as there are several very important matters to be dealt with. If there is not a quorum these matters, which as I mentioned are very important, will have to wait for another month – not a good idea. Believe me you will want to be in attendance to hear all the news and to give your opinions. It matters, plan on being there – you have a voice – be heard. April 4 is veteran’s luncheon – if you would like to attend but need assistance call

the office for help. This is a wonderful luncheon provided by the LA that not only offers a meal, but comradeship, laughter, door prizes and just a great way to spend a Wednesday lunch hour. Well, it looks like I have come to the end of my column for this week. This is my last Legion Lines on behalf of Branch 94. The Legion will be looking for a volunteer to take over writing Legion Lines. B.C. NEWS Mediator named in teacher dispute TOM FLETCHER Black Press Former University of Northern B.C. president Charles Jago has been appointed to mediate the dispute between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the bargaining agent for the province’s 60 school districts. Education Minister George Abbott announced Jago’s appointment Wednesday. Abbott said his staff inquired about two senior judges suggested by the BCTF as possible mediators for the long-running dispute, but both are still serving and are not available. Abbott said Jago is bound to seek a settlement within the terms of the government’s “net zero” wage mandate, which has been the basis for 130 settlements with public sector unions. But other than that, Jago has a “quite unrestricted mandate” to find common ground in other issues. Jago’s mandate is defined by the legislation passed to end the BCTF strike and work-torule action and impose a sixmonth cooling-off period.

It includes class size and composition, the division of issues between local and provincial bargaining, teacher performance evaluation, “alignment of professional development with teaching needs” and “scheduling and selection of teachers suited to student needs.” Jago has until the end of June to work with the union and the employers’ association, and then he is to make recommendations for a settlement whether there is agreement or not. The legislation requires that a two-year contract be put in place from the expiry of the earlier contract last spring to June, 2013. In a conference call from Prince George, Jago said he is hopeful he can make progress if both sides are willing to work on solutions. Even a two-year freeze on total compensation leaves room to find money for wage increases, he said. Jago said he was involved with faculty negotiations at UNBC and a previous univer-

sity post in Ontario, but he has no previous experience as a mediator. He is being paid $2,000 a day, which Abbott said is a standard rate for mediators in large labour disputes. BCTF president Susan Lambert told reporters the union will participate in the mediation, but she is concerned about Jago’s lack of labour relations experience, and also two donations of $500 each Jago made to the B.C. Liberal Party. Jago said the payments were on behalf of a golf foursome that took part in two party fundraising tournaments, for which he was reimbursed by other players. His policy as a university president was not to donate to any political party, he said. Lambert also questioned a report on education Jago wrote for the government-appointed B.C. Progress Board in 2006. That report recommended closer interaction between secondary schools and post-secondary institutions, with “priority attention” to promoting trades training.

Try these beef and almond stuffed zucchini boats Makes: 4 servings Active time: 45 minutes Total time: 1 hour 15 minutes Ingredients: 1/4 cup (50 mL) bulgur wheat (uncooked) 4 medium zucchini (about 227 g each) 1/3 cup (75 mL) slivered almonds 1 tablespoon (15 mL) olive oil 1 small onion, diced (about 1 cup, 250 mL) 2 large cloves garlic, minced 1/2 pound (227 g) lean ground beef 1 1/2 teaspoons (7 mL) ground cumin 1 teaspoon (5 mL) ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon (1 mL) red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon (1 mL) salt 3 tablespoons (45 mL) golden raisins 1 14.5 oz. can (411 g) no-salt-added diced tomatoes, strained, juice reserved 1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped fresh parsley, plus 1 tablespoon (15 mL) for garnish 1/2 cup (125 mL) no-salt added tomato sauce Directions: Preheat the oven to 375F (190C). Cook the bulgur according to the directions on the package. Cut the zucchini in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds with a spoon. Toast the almonds in a dry skillet over a medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they are fragrant and golden brown, about 3 minutes. Allow them to cool then chop them coarsely.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring, until they are soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon into small pieces, until it is nearly all browned, about 3 minutes. Stir in the cumin, coriander, cinnamon, red pepper flakes, and 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) of the salt and cook for 1 minute more. Add the cooked bulgur, raisins and strained diced tomatoes and cook another 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the almonds and 1/4 cup (50 mL) of the parsley. Combine the reserved tomato juice, tomato sauce and remaining 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) of salt in a 9x13 baking dish. Place the zucchini boats into the dish, cut side up, on top of the sauce and fill each zucchini boat generously with the beef mixture. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for 10 minutes more, until the zucchini is cooked through but still slightly firm. To serve, place 2 zucchini halves on a plate and drizzle with tomato sauce and garnish with parsley.
