Students hatching up a scheme

Elliott school in Sointula on Malcolm Island are once again hatching salmon eggs for the DFO Salmon Enhancement Program. The students who take care of the fish – Dexter Lash-Burrows, Micheal Tynjala, Molly Lash-Burrows, and Malcolm Blid – are called the Salmon Dream Team. Their job is to clean the tank, feed the fish and do the ATU (accumulated thermal units). The students don’t measure the salmon’s age in units of time, but measure its age in units of temperature. Every day a member of the Salmon Dream Team looks at the temperature and adds it to the previous day’s

The hospital’s team had the highest percentage of donors per death rate for all hospitals in B.C. in 2011, carrying on its rank as number one from 2010. The eye donation team received 31 eye donations which gave sight back to 55 people in total in 2011. Brian Ducedre, hospital chaplain, said the ability to give sight through these donations is what drives the team. “Our inoculation team here at St. Joe’s is very passionate about eye donation because we know that up to six people can benefit from one donation,” said Ducedre. “So six people could receive vision from one donation.” Eye donation recipients do not require the entire eye; rather, grafts are taken of parts of the eye. The

years. According to her, the team has 16 hours to get a donation to the Eye Bank in Vancouver from the time of death. The team must

be ready to go at all hours of the day and night in order to finish everything in time for that deadline — and while they’re sometimes already on shift when they get the

call, sometimes they’re at home sleeping, too. However, Chrest said it’s all worth it, and noted that Comox Valley families are very open to making the Cont. on Page 10

I have spent my first full winter living and fishing in Campbell River, in general winter fishing can be slow however, a lot of activity happens on our local streams and lakes. We have seen the wind, rain and snow but hopefully the weather patterns will change for the better. Discovery Pier Kris Salter took a fishing road trip to Little Lost lake and Blue Grouse. The ice is off and fishing from shore was slow. Some fish were surfacing at Helldiver, this could be a very good spot to catch fish when the weather warms. Upper elevation lakes will be hard to get to because of snow in the area. The Halibut season opened March 1st and locals have been Ma heading to the Hump. Bates Beach he has been good for winter springs caught on silver spoons, needlefish ca hoochies and Tomic Plugs. Salmon hoo caught in the area have been in the cau 12 to 16 pound range. George Bates This time of year, garage sales are held every weekend in Campbell River and Courtenay, one simply has to look for fishing gear that is not being used and is offered up to the public. Other sources for gear are second hand stores and pawnshops. Sometimes the story is better than the product, if your lucky a treasure can be found. I recently found a box of fishing flies that was 55lb Tyee Mount - Not for Sale purchased through an estate sale. Coming up in the month of May are a number of fishing related events in Campbell River that will be of interest to fishermen and non fishermen. Ducks Unlimited will be holding their 26th annual Banquet and Auction, May 12th at The Maritime Heritage Centre. Tickets will be available at Tyee Tic Marine and River Sportsman in Ma Campbell River. Ca Campbell River Eagles youth football has secured two players foo from the B.C. Lions football team to fro attend camp and help out May 5th att and 6th. The player’s names will be an John Robert (Jack) Smith Archive Picture announced and they will be treated to a fishing trip in Campbell River.
