The B.C. Liberal government’s Budget 2012 reveals the deficit forecast for 2011/12 improved by $594 million over projections and now stands at $2.5 billion. The province forecasts a deficit of $968 million for the 2012/13 fiscal year starting April 1, and then surpluses of $154 million in 2013/14 and $250 million in 2014/15. Over the next three years, it will cap annual spending to

Lac des Roches hosts American divers

On Feb. 1, Bridge Lake Elementary School students enjoyed a special field trip to Lac des Roches to watch United States’ divers training for under-ice diving. Apparently, last year in the Arctic, two people died because of a failed diving procedure, which had evidenced lack of coordination. Hence, the U.S.

Coast Guard, the U.S. Military Sea-Divers, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy all sent their best representatives to “bring the procedure to perfection.” About 20 divers came from all over the U.S. They chose Lac des Roches for several reasons, not least of which is the gourmet food at Lac des Roches Resort. They had also received recommendations from other

According to resort owner Luca Lanzoni, “They were lucky; they did get some -20 C time.” The visiting school children, who spent the whole morning with the team, learned a great deal about diving. In one particular exercise, the team explained what they did if they

got lost. The divers are supposed to stay within a specified range of “home,” but they each carry a “kind of corkscrew.” Then, if they do get lost, especially in the dark, they screw it into the underside of the ice and just hang there. The rescuers swim around in a circle with a rope until they snag the screw and bring the diver to safety. Said parent chaperone Andrea Veitch: “I couldn’t believe it. At the end, for fun, they cut a large hole in the ice with a chainsaw then stripped down to

The fun factor was high and so was attendance at the Third Annual Winter Carnival hosted by 100 Mile House Child Care Resource and Referral (CCRR), Feb. 18. Key co-ordinator Erica Henderson estimates 700 people came through the doors of 100 Mile House Junior Secondary to enjoy free activities, entertainment, food and prizes. “It exceeded our expectations,” she says, adding Uncle Chris the Clown, with his magic shows and balloon animals was the hands-down favourite among carnival guests, and a couple of bouncy cas-

tles were also a great hit. The event was designed to provide free family fun for people in the community and it also included a puppet show, music, games, crafts, dance performances and treats, such as hotdogs,

popcorn and hot chocolate, for everyone. The carnival was made possible through the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre, with support from Success By 6, Make Children First, CCRR and businesses in the community.

Hockey players meet in KIJHL By Bill Forman

On Feb 4, the Chase Heat travelled to Princeton to play the Princeton Posse in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action. The Posse scored with one minute and 20 seconds left in the game to go ahead 4-3 and victory. It was a fast, hardchecking affair with a lot of end to end action. Posse forward, and former 100 Mile House Midget Rep, Kevin Raimundo notched a goal and an assist and was named third star in the game. Princeton is headed to the playoffs,

while the Chase Heat, with former 100 Mile Midget reps Reece Forman and Mark Boyce, will wrap up its expansion season on Feb. 19.

Regular season statistics • Kevin Raimundo - Princeton Posse rookie forward tallied 18 points on eight goals and 10 assists in 32 games. • Reece Forman Chase Heat rookie defenceman finished with 14 points on five goals and nine assists in 50 games. • Mark Boyce Chase Heat rookie forward notched eight points on three goals and five assists in 28 games.

By Karen Schuurman The Cariboo Regional District held an open house at Lone Butte Community Hall on Feb. 11, where residents were invited to learn more about emergency planning. Area residents were encouraged to get involved by contributing their knowledge of backwoods trails and roadways that might be used in an emergency, as well as register their names on a notification and volunteer list. People who have equipment, such as earth-moving machinery, or livestock trailers, were also encouraged to register so they might be used if the need arises. It was a very educational event. Fires happen, as we have all witnessed in recent years. Planning ahead of time is always best and the more information the organizing team has, the better off we all will be. Folks can still find out about this important community project by going to www.cariboord.bc.ca.
