SETTING THE BASE TO FURTHER SCALE UP 2023 - 2026
EDITION SEPTEMBER 2023
The world climate crisis is on a scale that it requires very large and ambitious nature restoration & biodiversity projects such as the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor of the Black Jaguar Foundation. To ultimately restore 1 million hectares, plant 1,7 billion native trees and employ over 20.000 field-workers, the project of the BJF sets an example of many dying and drying rivers in the world and sets a strong positive example to the world that ‘food production & nature’ can go hand-in-hand.
BJF has built in the past 4 years a healthy base in terms of organisation, restoration capacity, landraising and governance. Now it can handle funding support up to Euro 60M to complete both the first 2M barrier and its next goal of 10M trees.
In the past years, BJF built its reputation as one of the leading restoration organisations in Brazil, as per local and federal ministries and global media such as Reuters.
‘’Doing what we promise’’ in spite of harsh local conditions and lack of infrastructure in the field. Our value nr. 1 starts to pay off. We successfully built trust and longterm partnerships with all our stakeholders and in particular with our farmer-partners, employees and funders.
BJF’s focus and investment in Quality Restoration with our 17-Step Restoration model, starts to pay off among all stakeholders in the field: Local communities - Farmers & landowners - Local governments.
Positive community engagement is one of our 4 key pillars. BJF has created positive involvement and ‘hope and income’ to local communities in now 7 municipalities. It involves the empowerment and employment of a field-team of 120 workers and over 65 seed-collectors in 2022.
In addition positive relations and trust has been established with local municipalities, by proving fire-brigade training and fire-fighting equipment and native trees to local community parks.
BJF has built so far and from scratch and without seed-funding, an inspiring community of 110+ companies, 5 non-profits, 2 family offices and thousands of individual donors. The last 3 corporate partnerships signed, are all 4-year or longer commitments with each yearly Euro 500K to Euro 1M to the BJF, towards our goal to reach financial stability.
We learned that a combination of ESG fulfilment, Marketing & Storytelling and C02 Communication rights are so far main drivers of BJF corporate partners. Still BJF needs to expand the many avenues worldwide available, to reach more and higher value funding contributions and donations.
We have learned through hard earned lessons in the field, with all the different elements of weather, lack of infrastructure and changing demands from crop and cow farmers, to determine a real good estimation of the total real cost per tree/ hectre when implementing all the 17-Steps of restoration.
Farmer and landowners engagement is one of our 4 key pillars. In the past 2 years, BJF has successfully been able to partner and gain the trust with 18 farmer-companies in the Corridor to restore their lands. This trust was built by “doing what we promise” whatever the complexity and sets the base to further expand partnerships with farmers in the mid and longterm future.
BJF has completed in 2022 the construction of its own and one of the largest nurseries for native trees in the North of Brazil. 48 985023888
It is ready to further scale up its nursery capacity, to meet the future demands of ‘planting seedlings’ as one of its 5 restoration techniques.
During the past 3 planting-seasons, BJF has now mastered all 5 restorationtechniques in the Corridor zone within the Amazon and Cerrado biome.
The accounts and processes of both entities BJF Netherlands and BJF Brazil have been successfully audited in 2021 and 2022 by global accounting firm BakerTilly.
And BakerTilly will continue to audit our processes and accounts in the years to come. In 2021 and 2022, the percentage of costs to “overhead & fundraising” has not exceeded 8%.
BJF in Brazil has established an ‘Advisory Board’ with highly prominent leaders from the agro, environment and finance sector.
In addition BJF in Brazil has established a ‘Technical Restoration Committee’ with experts from leading institutes in Brazil in all aspects of forest-restoration.
Since mid 2022, BJF Brazil employs all our field-team and field-workers under the comprehensive CLT labour legislation (Consolidação das Leis do Trabalho).
Under CLT contract, employees are very well protected by law from its employer and receive benefits such as unemployment-insurance, paternity leave, paid annual vacation and health-insurance to name a few. In spite of the extra costs, we are proud to employ our staff under CLT conditions and in addition we provide comprehensive safety training
The hard work in the field is being done by our fieldworkers and we will continue our efforts and investment to become an excellent reference of employer in the region.
BJF has completed an extensive ‘Green Capital Study’ or ‘Cost-Benefit Study’ of the entire project. This scientific study was carried by 11 renowned scientists from the University of São Paulo and University of Illinois, during 14 months in 2018 and 2019. It developed a road-map for long term execution of the project by BJF and partners.
Global media has already committed to write and broadcast updates, articles and tv recordings about our mission. Articles appeared so far in National Geographic, Reuters, Estadão, World Economic Forum, El País, Forbes and others.
