February is here, and with it comes a month centered around connection, community, and a little extra heart. In this issue of Blackhawk Living, we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day in our own way, by highlighting the people, places, and activities that bring us together and make Blackhawk such a special place to call home.
This month, we’re excited to feature a closer look at pickleball, one of the fastestgrowing sports in our community. Our pickleball article highlights the energy, camaraderie, and fun happening on the courts, from seasoned players to those picking up a paddle for the first time. It’s been wonderful to see neighbors of all ages coming together, staying active, and building friendships through the game. Whether you’re already playing or curious about joining in, this is a great snapshot of how pickleball has become a true social hub here in Blackhawk.
As always, we’re devoted to sharing stories, events, and news that reflect the heart of our neighborhood. If you have a story to tell, an event to share, or a neighbor you’d like to see featured, I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to reach out anytime at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.
From all of us at Blackhawk Living Magazine, wishing you a warm and happy Valentine’s Day. We hope this issue leaves you feeling inspired, connected, and proud to be part of this community.

The Pickleball Community of Blackhawk
By
When Blackhawk resident and pickleball group member Bob Fletcher first learned about the rapidly growing sport of pickleball, his interest was instantly piqued. “I’ve always enjoyed staying active and participating in a variety of sports,” Bob says. “I was intrigued, but I didn’t expect how quickly pickleball would become not only a favorite pastime, but a meaningful part of my life and our pickleball community.” Bob’s introduction to pickleball at Blackhawk Country Club came during a standard Monday “drop-in” session. Watching from the sidelines, he noticed something special right away. Courts were organized by skill level, with players rotating in and out, pairing up in both mixed and same-gender doubles. Some groups were clearly competitive, fast-paced, and energetic, while others were relaxed and social. “The competitive games especially caught my attention, I was hooked!”
Easy to Learn, Hard to Stop Playing
One of the biggest draws to pickleball, Bob explains, is how accessible it is. “The rules are simple, the equipment is affordable, and within minutes most people can rally back and forth. You don’t need years of training or a specific athletic background to get started. But at the same time, there’s a lot of depth to the game.”
Bob observed that the more experienced players mastered soft shots, placement, and game anticipation that keeps the sport engaging and mentally stimulating. “Another major appeal at Blackhawk is open play. Members can arrive on their own and rotate into games, making it easy to meet new people and build connections. You don’t need to come with a partner, You just show up, and suddenly you’re playing with people who feel like friends.”
A Sport for Every Body and Every Age
Bob went on to explain pickleball’s appeal. “One of the reasons the sport appeals to me and to such a wide range of players is that compared to tennis, pickleball is easier on the body. The smaller court, lighter ball, and limited running make it more jointfriendly, while still providing a solid workout. It’s rare to find a sport where teenagers, young adults, and seniors can all play together competitively and enjoy it. Pickleball makes that possible. The games are fast-paced and usually last 15 to 25 minutes, which means players spend more time moving and less time waiting”.
Over time, Bob built enough endurance to play for a couple of hours a day, several days a week. “The result for me has been improved fitness, better stamina, and a workout that never feels like a chore,” he shares.
Pickleball Has a Mental Aspect
Bob has found that, as with all sports, pickleball has a strong mental component. “Learning to let go of missed shots and mistakes is crucial. Early on, I often overanalyzed things and got frustrated when I couldn’t find consistency or a steady rhythm. Pickleball teaches resilience—you’re going to miss shots often, but you have to let it go and focus on the next point. That mindset has translated into greater confidence both on and off the court. The sense of improvement, competition, and achievement brings a boost in self-esteem and a genuine emotional high. For me, the mental and emotional benefits are just as meaningful as the physical ones”.
Friendship at the Heart of the Game
Bob pointed out that at Blackhawk Country Club, pickleball has become a true social hub. “With ten dedicated courts, the club can host large drop-in sessions, leagues play, clinics, and special events. Playing pickleball has enabled us to create whole

Men’s Doubles Team
new circles of friends, with connections that go beyond the courts to fun social events and shared experiences”.
That sense of camaraderie was especially evident during one of Bob’s most memorable pickleball experiences. This past year, he served as captain of the Blackhawk Country Club Men’s Doubles League. Along with co-captain Dennis Scullion, and with substantial input from the players, Bob helped guide the team of 17 players as they faced six other country club teams. “It was an incredibly rewarding experience,” Bob says. “But what really stood out for me was the team spirit. Our players demonstrated incredible sportsmanship, offered constant encouragement, showed selflessness, and consistently maintained a fantastic attitude.”
Leadership and a Growing Community
Bob contributes another important element to the vibrant culture of pickleball at Blackhawk: leadership. “I’ve seen first-hand that pickleball’s success at Blackhawk comes down to great leadership. With Bryn Powell, Director of Racquet Sports, and pickleball pro Evan Praznik leading the way, the racquet sports department has grown into a lively, multi-generational gathering place. From clinics and league tournaments to holiday round robins and monthly birthday parties, there’s always something exciting happening both on and off the courts.”
More Than a Game
Bob believes pickleball’s greatest strength is its power to bring people together. “Its inclusive nature breaks down barriers and opens doors for mentorship, friendship, and support across cultures and generations, Pickleball isn’t just a sport—it’s a community. For me, and for many that participate and enjoy pickleball at Blackhawk Country Club, it has become a cornerstone of daily life, offering a fun physical activity, new friendships, and camaraderie that bridges generations and cultures.”

Why Swim Team Becomes a Whole-Family Experience
By Sean Quackenbush
What an incredible 2025 we just finished off, with our newly formed Fall USA Swim Team BLHK, our swimmers Olivia Lucia, William McConnell, and Katelyn Yoo qualifying and attending the prestigious Winter Age Championships competing against year round swim teams, and closing out our fall and winter swim programs with record number of swimmers attending.
The best summer routines are the ones that don’t feel like routines at all. They start with a practice session at the pool and end hours later, after conversations on the deck, lunch with friends, and one more “just five more minutes” in the water.
That’s what swim team is all about — and why it quickly becomes something families build their summers around.
Swimming is one of the most effective sports for kids because it develops the whole body while being easy on growing joints. Pediatricians and organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics often recommend swimming for exactly that reason. It builds strength, endurance, coordination, and lung capacity in a way that supports overall athletic development and complements other sports.
Those physical benefits come with important mental ones, too. Research shared by institutions like the Cleveland Clinic shows that regular physical activity helps kids manage stress, improve mood, and sharpen focus. Swimming adds a calming rhythm that many kids respond to immediately. Parents often notice that swimmers leave practice more relaxed, confident, and ready to take on the rest of the day.
As kids settle into that rhythm, something else happens alongside the pool.
Swim team creates a rare balance between individual growth and teamwork. Kids race in their own lanes, work toward personal goals, and learn how to measure progress against themselves. At the same time, they become part of a team that celebrates every swimmer. Relays bring that balance to life — four swimmers, each
with a role, working together while the entire pool deck cheers. For families at Blackhawk Country Club, programs like HOX Swim Team extend that experience beyond the water. HOX Time naturally turns into social time. Parents connect on deck, share shade tents at meets, help keep an eye on younger siblings, and cheer just as loudly as the kids. Over time, familiar faces turn into friendships, and those friendships turn into a genuine support network.
HOX Swim Team also creates space for families to slow down and spend time together. Kids stay to play after practice, families eat lunch together, and afternoons unfold at the pool instead of rushing off to the next commitment. Many parents say swim team becomes the anchor of their summer — a place where schedules simplify and community takes over.
Organizations like the YMCA often point to swim teams as environments where kids develop discipline, resilience, and teamwork. Swimming is also a lifelong and essential safety skill, with public health organizations like the CDC emphasizing the value of strong swimming ability for children.
For residents considering a Blackhawk Country Club membership, HOX Swim Team offers something bigger than youth athletics. They offer a shared family experience — one where kids grow stronger and more confident, and parents find connection, friendships, and a true sense of belonging. It’s not just something families sign up for. It’s something they become part of.
Want to find your tribe with HOX?
For membership information and HOX registration instructions, please contact Lee Mitchell at 925.736.6500x504 or lmitchell@ blackhawkcc.org
If you are new to the HOX swim team, DO NOT continue with registration (including Mini HOX the prior year). Instead, please contact Coach Sean at seanq@blackhawkcc.org for a mandatory evaluation. No registrations will be approved until they have been cleared to swim by Coach Sean.

A Standout Dining Experience at Khaki Indian Food
By Megan Scott
From the moment we stepped into Khaki Indian Food at City Center Bishop Ranch, it was clear this would be a dining experience to remember. The service alone sets Khaki apart. Attentive without being intrusive, warm without being overbearing, the staff anticipates your needs with ease and makes you feel genuinely welcome from start to finish.
The atmosphere strikes a beautiful balance. Elegant and elevated, yet relaxed and comfortable, Khaki feels right at home whether you’re celebrating a milestone, planning a romantic date night, or gathering with friends for an evening that feels a little extra special. The bar deserves its own applause. Each cocktail is thoughtfully crafted with balanced flavors, beautiful presentation, and a clear sense of creativity and care behind every pour.
The food more than lives up to the setting. Khaki’s vegetarian offerings are exceptional, with appetizers and main dishes that showcase layered flavors and thoughtful preparation. Every bite feels intentional and deeply satisfying. And then there is the naan. Warm, soft, perfectly cooked, and truly unforgettable. It is, without question, the best naan we’ve ever had.
For those in or around San Ramon searching for an elevated dining experience that delivers on both hospitality and flavor, Khaki Indian Food is a must visit. This is the kind of restaurant you leave already
It’s Not Real—But It Certainly Looks Real!
By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
Using spackle as a medium, I transformed a simple heart-shaped wooden box into what looks like a fully frosted cake. Amazon offers preassembled kits of colored spackle marketed as whipped cream clay. I chose a kit by Bofun, which included piping tips and individual piping bags filled with different colors.
This whipped cream clay can be used to decorate a variety of items, such as mirrors, picture frames, and cell phone cases. For this project, I used it to embellish a heart-shaped box for Valentine’s Day. Working with the clay felt remarkably similar to decorating a real cake with frosting. The piping bags were easy to handle, and the overall design of the Bofun kit was thoughtful and user-friendly. One important tip: allow each layer to dry before adding the next. The clay doesn’t set immediately—much like real frosting—which actually adds to the realism.
The finished box looked so convincing that my husband mistook it for an actual cake. Its appearance is delightfully deceptive, so I wouldn’t recommend leaving it within reach of young children who might be tempted to take a bite.
Take a look at the photos and see for yourself!
Happy crafting!

RLewis Cellars: Celebrating 30 Years of Winemaking Excellence
By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since1990, Photo by MJ McColgan
ecently, we had the pleasure of visiting the spectacular new Lewis Cellars estate and tasting room, beautifully positioned along the iconic Silverado Trail in the heart of Napa Valley.
Lewis Cellars was acquired in 2021 by The Wonderful Company— owned by Stewart and Lynda Resnick, who also steward the acclaimed JUSTIN and Landmark Vineyards. Under their ownership, the property has been elevated with stunning design and an enhanced hospitality experience, while preserving the legacy of its founders.
Our visit began in their elegant, light-filled tasting room, where floor-to-ceiling views spill out over the Napa Valley. Thomas, our professional and exceptionally knowledgeable host, guided us through a thoughtfully curated wine and food pairing experience.
We opened with the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc, a bright, refreshing wine that immediately soothed the senses—and impressed us enough to take a bottle home.
Next came the 2023 Napa Valley Chardonnay, beautifully paired with a gougère topped with Egg Tsar Nicoulai Caviar. This was followed by the 2023 Russian River Chardonnay, served with a California salmon rillettes on toasted brioche with citrus and cilantro bud. While both Chardonnays were excellent, the Napa
Valley Chardonnay especially captured our attention.
The red wines showcased the power and finesse for which Lewis Cellars is known.
The 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon—a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5.7% Cabernet Franc, 3.8% Merlot, and 2.5% Petite Syrah—was served alongside an arancini with foraged mushroom, soubise, and onion blossom.
The 2022 Big Blend, composed of 48% Syrah, 21% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petite Syrah, was paired with a rich Schmitz Ranch beef roll with oxtail and Cabernet jus.
We especially loved the 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet and brought two bottles back to Danville to share with friends.
In conclusion, Lewis Cellars is unquestionably a “must-do” for your Napa Valley bucket list—an elevated experience that showcases the artistry, history, and hospitality of a truly exceptional winery.

English Garden Simplicity and Color
By Aly Baker, Blackhawk Bloomers
English Gardens have long been popular for their lack of formal structure, cascading colors and plants. The Gardens are often described as organized chaos where plants spill over pathways and climb walls freely. The lack of strict rules makes the English Countryside garden beginner-friendly and adaptable to any space, from large backyards to smaller city spaces.
English Gardens often focus on fragrance (think roses, lavender) and vibrant, “jumbled” color. In 2026 this approach remains highly popular because the dense and diverse plantings naturally support bees, butterflies and birds which are both great for the garden and the environment.
Typically, this style is a layered mix of perennials, annuals, and shrubs:
• Tall Spires: Foxgloves, Delphiniums, Hollyhocks, and Lupines provide height and vertical drama at the back of borders.
• Romantic Blooms: Roses (especially climbing and shrub varieties) are essential, along with Peonies, Hydrangeas, and Lavender.
• Fillers & Groundcover: Hardy Geraniums, (Nepeta), and Sweet Peas fill gaps with texture and scent.
• Edibles: Traditionally, these gardens intermingled beauty with utility, featuring herbs like Rosemary and Thyme alongside fruit trees and vegetables.
In March the Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club will host speaker, Gillian Gray, a native Brit who will share her experiences in both creating and touring the Country Gardens of Great Britain
If you would like to learn more about this event, or become a member of the Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club, please contact Kathy Harkins kdharkins@att.net
A Legendary Collaboration –The King & Bear
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
When one thinks of the greatest rivalries in sporting history, the names Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus inevitably sit at the top of the list. For decades, “The King” and “The Golden Bear” battled for supremacy on the world’s most prestigious leaderboards. However, in a rare moment of architectural synergy, these two icons set aside their competitive fire to co-design a singular masterpiece: the King & Bear at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida.
As the only course in the world born from the combined pens of Palmer and Nicklaus, the King & Bear offers a golfing experience that is as historically significant as it is physically demanding.
The Heart of the Village
The course is a centerpiece of World Golf Village, a sprawling residential and resort destination that has long served as a North Florida landmark. While the village was famously the home of the World Golf Hall of Fame for twenty-five years, the museum recently relocated its physical artifacts to Pinehurst, North Carolina. Nevertheless, the spirit of the game remains deeply embedded in the soil here. The village continues to be a premier golf hub, anchored by its two championship sister courses: the King & Bear and the Slammer & Squire.
While both courses celebrate the legends of the game, they offer distinct personalities. The Slammer & Squire (named for Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen) is known for its classic, wooded aesthetic, while the King & Bear provides a more expansive, “power-game” layout that reflects the styles of its namesake creators.
A Study in Contrast and Collaboration
The King & Bear is a fascinating hybrid of design philosophies. Rather than splitting the layout—where one might design the front nine and the other the back—the duo collaborated on every single hole.
You can sense Palmer’s penchant for “go-for-broke” heroics and generous fairways seamlessly blended with Nicklaus’s signature
requirement for power and strategic approach shots. Stretching to a formidable 7,279 yards from the back tees, the course demands a certain level of length. However, from the middle tees at 6,506 yards, it becomes a manageable yet honest test of skill.
The Winter Aesthetic and Layout
During the winter months, the course takes on a distinct visual character. While the Bermuda rough enters its dormant, tawny phase, the fairways and greens are meticulously over-seeded with Rye, creating lush green corridors through the landscape.
The strategy here is straightforward—there are no “trick holes” or deceptive optics. Instead, the challenge lies in the margins:
• Water Hazards: Water is visible on seventeen holes and directly in play on eight. Most notably, two massive Par 5s wrap entirely around water hazards, demanding nerves of steel from tee to green.
• The Shaved Edge: The first cut of rough is often shaved tight, sloping directly toward fairway bunkers or water. This architectural choice effectively narrows the landing zones, rewarding the accurate driver while penalizing the slight miss.
• Waste Bunkers: Strategically placed coquina waste areas often serve as a “saving grace,” catching errant shots before they find a watery grave.
Beyond the Scorecard
The experience is defined by a sense of sophisticated hospitality. Between the towering loblolly pines and majestic oaks, the course offers small, thoughtful luxuries—such as the fresh apples chilled on ice at the first and tenth tees—that elevate the round.
After finishing the 18th, the stylish stone-faced clubhouse provides a refined sanctuary. The King & Bear remains a grand, sweeping tribute
Natures Varied Texture and Colors
to two men who defined the modern game. It is a walk-through history, played on a canvas of green and gold.

A Timeless Yes: Choosing an Engagement Ring with The Bay Area’s Experts
By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry San Francisco | Napa | Walnut Creek, Family owned and
In the Bay Area, meaningful decisions are made with intention. This is a community that values legacy, discernment, and celebrating life’s milestones with quiet confidence.
Choosing an engagement ring is one of those moments—a decision rooted in love, intention, and a future worth celebrating. At Padis, engagement rings are our specialty and at the heart of what we do, and we believe the experience should feel just as special as the ring itself.
With thoughtful guidance and a relaxed, personal approach, selecting the perfect engagement ring can be something you truly enjoy. Here are a few expert tips to help you choose a ring they’ll treasure for a lifetime.
Begin With Intention
Much like a well-designed home or a carefully curated lifestyle, the best engagement rings reflect personal style and story. Take note of what your partner gravitates toward—timeless elegance or modern sophistication, subtle refinement or a statement piece with presence.
When you meet with one of our non-commissioned advisors, these details help us guide you toward a ring that feels authentic and unmistakably theirs.
A few ways to gather inspiration:
• Ask trusted friends or family for thoughtful insight
• Notice if they admire a particular ring or jewelry style
• Pay attention to hints—intentional or otherwise
• Observe whether they wear yellow gold, white gold, or platinum
• Look for saved Pinterest, Instagram, or TikTok inspiration
• Learn the basics of diamond quality, settings, and the Four Cs

Experience Matters—See the Difference In Person
While online research is a helpful starting point, nothing replaces seeing a diamond in person. Light performance, sparkle, and subtle nuances can only truly be appreciated when viewed side by side.

Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds
A question we often hear in our store is whether to choose a natural or lab-grown diamond. Both are beautiful, and the right choice comes down to what matters most to you.
Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years and are valued for their rarity, history, and enduring tradition. Labgrown diamonds are created using advanced technology and are visually and chemically nearly identical, often allowing for greater size or quality within a certain budget.
At Padis Jewelry, we offer both and believe in educating—not influencing—our clients. We’ll walk you through the differences side by side and help you choose the diamond that best reflects your values and your love story.
