Truth
by David Clifton
Pontius Pilate famously asked Jesus, ‘What is truth?’ [Jn 18: 38] At first sight this seems a simple enough question to answer. Facts are facts are they not? But how do we sort out fact from fiction? How do we know that we are not mistaken? How do we know that our understanding of a situation is the complete picture? One can tell the truth without telling the full story, and this can be more misleading than an outright lie. That is why witnesses, testifying before a court of law, promise not only to tell the truth, but to tell the ‘whole truth’. If justice is to be done then all the facts of the case must be disclosed.
