Dean’s Introduction

Father Stephen As I write this introduction to the Proclaimer, it’s nice to know that the Cathedral is once again, if not quite warm (it is never really warm in winter), at least not freezing! A few weeks ago I got up to the sound of the carbon monoxide alarm going off in the basement which contains the Cathedral boiler. Of course, that meant the boiler had to be switched off immediately and the engineers called. When the engineer came, shone his torch on the inside of the boiler, and asked me if I could see light outside—and I could—it was clear that at the age of well over 40 years, the boiler had reached the end of its long life. Fortunately, as we were expecting this might happen sooner or later, we had already got plans for what to do in such an eventuality. Indeed, we were intending to replace it anyway in a couple of years. An emergency system has now been installed, and the engineers can begin the major process
