Studies show that STEM careers are growing faster than any other. Our goal is to prepare our students for these exciting and wellpaying choices. Due to a rising demand and

STEM jobs are set to increase 17 percent between now and 2024.

Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation providing opportunities to develop skills in problem-solving, research, and design — while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.

students enrolled in at least one PLTW course. Over 200 students enrolled in the fall of 2017.

Principles of Biomedical Science In the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.

Andrew began his career at National Grid in Syracuse as a Control & Integration Engineer, and also continued his education at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, earning a Master’s degree in Power Systems. Andrew is currently a Supervising Field Engineer at PSEG Long Island in the Overhead/Underground Lines Department. He has worked in the utility business for over five years in Substation Engineering and Meter Services Departments.

Medical Interventions (Fall 2018) Students investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease and through real-world cases, are exposed to a range of interventions related to human DNA, immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.

FUTURE COURSES Computer Science courses — Computer Science Essentials, Computer Science Principles, and Cybersecurity. Expanded Engineering course options — Aerospace Engineering, Digital Engineering, and Civil Engineering & Architecture.

Andrew Guild ‘06, a member of Bishop Loughlin’s PLTW Advisory Board, is one example of a graduate working in STEM. As a student here, he was Vice President of Lasallian Youth and a part of the school band.

Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis in the body. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal Maniken®; use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration; and take on the roles of biomedical professionals to solve real-world medical cases.

STEM EDUCATION WHAT IT IS...

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Course curriculums in STEM areas integrate real-life situations, solutions, and project-based learning. STEM is one of the fastest-growing areas of our economy and based on numerous studies, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are an important part of learning in an increasingly competitive and global marketplace.

WHAT IS PROJECT LEAD THE WAY? Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is the largest nationally recognized STEM education nonprofit organization. PLTW partners with K-12 schools and educators and “through an engaging, hands-on curriculum, encourages the development of problemsolving skills, critical thinking, creative and innovative reasoning, and a love of learning.” “The compelling, hands-on high school PLTW classroom experience changes the way students experience their education. Research demonstrates that PLTW students outperform their peers in school,

are better prepared for post-secondary studies, and are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers, and researchers compared to their non-PLTW peers. Students find PLTW programs relevant, inspiring, engaging, and foundational to their future success.”

PLTW GATEWAY PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PLTW Gateway for middle school students empowers students to lead their own discovery. The hands-on program boosts classroom engagement and excitement, drives collaboration, and inspires aha! moments and deep comprehension. And as students engage in PLTW’s activities in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, they see a range of paths and possibilities they can look forward to in high school and beyond. Source: PLTW Bishop Loughlin will offer the Gateway Program during the 2017-2018 academic year.

INTERESTED IN APPLYING? “Middle school is a time of exploration, a time when students are figuring out what they’re passionate about today and how that relates to who they’ll become tomorrow.”

Unlike most high school STEM programs, Bishop Loughlin encourages broad participation in our PLTW program available for grades 9 - 12. If you are applying to Bishop Loughlin, please ask for the PLTW Interest Form. You will be considered for the program upon acceptance to Loughlin. Preference will be given to incoming freshmen with good academic standing. Any grade 8 student who has achieved the Living Environmental Science Regents will also be given preference. For more information contact our Admissions Director Edwin Gonzalez at 718-857-2700, x2246 or x2248.

The goal of PLTW is to provide students with a “path to college and career success in STEMrelated fields.” Source: PLTW
