from the PRESIDENT This Dear Loyal Friends of Loughlin, This letter was written well before the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an important statement on the success of our mission. However, it reminds us that the world can be upended in short order. Even in the face of the challenges that lay before us, education will support the long term needs of a world that will be changed. Our contribution will not only be providing a learning environment for the acquisition of knowledge and skills. We will be forming young men and women with values rooted in our faith tradition to guide them in uncertain times. Not too long ago, I attended a conference of chief administrators from our Lasallian schools. In one workshop session, the presenter strongly suggested we focus on results to promote our schools. This publication is very much a report on results. You are receiving this because you have demonstrated an interest in philanthropy. Your commitment to giving back has generated some real results. Throughout the issue, you will see some of our students, former students, faculty, and others highlighted. The featured young women and men were able to benefit from a quality Catholic and Lasallian education because you cared enough to invest in their future. Your investment has paid dividends in the quality of their lives. They are building blocks to our collective future and I am proud of them.

Your annual fund support enables us to recruit, and in many instances, retain a talented and creative faculty. You have read about some of these faculty members throughout the year. Here we present you with a few more exceptional educators. They study, coach, and guide young people as they mature into responsible adults through study, questioning, and skill development. All of this good work happens in an atmosphere imbued with gospel values: love of God, neighbor (friend and foe), self. In this place, mercy trumps judgment and taking responsibility for one’s actions leads to growth. The hard work of Loughlin’s teaching staff and its positive impact is demonstrated by our graduating seniors. They are accepted into very fine colleges and universities. You are able to see a partial list of these schools in this report. In addition to a strong teaching staff, our students’ performance is encouraged by innovative academic programs. These programs support active learning and the development of critical thinking skills. Students explore new ideas, test hypotheses, and find solutions to real problems. If in the process of learning they encounter failure, it is understood that this failure is a step to further knowledge; which supports the development of a growth mindset. As you read this report, I hope you share a sense of satisfaction in the good you have accomplished in the lives of the young persons entrusted to our care. It is a sacred trust that we hold dear. As I begin to prepare for the next stage in my life, I feel more prepared than ever — thanks to Loughlin and all that this community has taught me. WE ARE LOUGHLIN MAKING AN IMPACT TALKING TO THE MAYOR’S OFFICE Bishop Loughlin Civic Spirit student delegates Kyra Marshall ‘21 (seated) and Hanny Echeverria ‘21 (standing) confidently presented their ideas for improving youth service engagement to Office of the Mayor’s NYC Service team. Their presentation was based on five weeks of in-person meetings, phone conversations, substantive research, brainstorming, team building, collaboration, and careful preparation.

PERFORMING AT THE UNITED NATIONS Ameer Brown ‘20, a Urban Word grand slam finalist, performed this Fall before a United Nations special committee on Sustainability, reading a poem related to the summit on sustainability and the future. Ameer says that the rhymes he composes (most often to music) are more than just words. “It is my hope to give a voice to those who are often not heard, the youth.” Majoring in music, Ameer will attend the NYU Tisch School of the Arts this Fall.

JOINING THE future engineer program This academic year, after receiving a grant from Amazon’s Future Engineer Program, Loughlin offered a new STEM course, Introduction to Computer Science. Thirty students were chosen to pilot the new course with Dean Luis Montes, designed by Amazon’s educational provider Edhesive. Teaching the foundations of computer science using the Python language, the course is designed for students who are brand new to computer programming. Edhesive states that “the goal of the course is to prepare students to take on AP Computer Science and AP Computer Science Principles in the future.”

FINALIST DOCTOR WORKS TO SAVE YOUTH FROM VIOLENCE BEFORE THEY REACH HIS ER Previously published on cnn.com by Kathleen Toner, CNN

As an emergency physician at Kings County Hospital Center, Dr. Rob Gore has faced many traumatic situations that he’d rather forget. But some moments stick with him. “Probably the worst thing that I’ve ever had to do is tell a 15-yearold’s mother that her son was killed,” Gore said. “If I can’t keep somebody alive, I’ve failed.” Gore, a Brooklyn native, finds violent injuries particularly hard to stomach — a feeling compounded by the fact that many of the victims he treats are young men of color. “When I became an ER doc, my patients looked just like me,” he said. “A lot of this stuff really hits home.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, homicide is the No. 1 cause of death for black men ages 15 to 34. “Conflict’s not avoidable. But violent conflict is,” Gore said. “Seeing a lot of the traumas that take place at work, or in the neighborhood, you realize, ‘I don’t want this to happen anymore. What do we do about it?’” For Gore, one answer is the Kings Against Violence Initiative — known as KAVI (kavibrooklyn.org) — which he started in 2009. Today, the nonprofit has anti-violence programs in the hospital, schools and broader community, serving more than 250 young people. Victims of violence are more likely to be reinjured, so the first place Gore wanted to work was in the hospital, with an intervention program in which “hospital responders” assist 6

victims of violence and their family — a model pioneered at other hospitals. The idea is that reaching out right after someone has been injured reduces the likelihood of violent retaliation and provides a chance for the victim to address some of the circumstances that may AND TODAY.... have led to their injury. Yet Gore wanted to prevent people from being violently injured in the first place. So, in 2011, he and his group began working with a handful of at-risk students at a nearby high school. By the end of the year, more than 50 students were involved. Today, KAVI holds weekly workshops for male and female students in three schools, teaching mediation and conflict resolution. The group also provides free mental health counseling for students who need one-on-one support. “Violence is everywhere they turn — home, school, neighborhood, police,” Gore said. “You want to make sure they can learn how to process, deal with it, and overcome it.”

Shania Felix ’13, a graduate of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, will join the Bronx District Attorney’s Office this Fall, where she plans to become a career prosecutor — and some day a judge! During a visit with Loughlin students who have expressed an interest in a law career, Shania told the students “Bishop Loughlin began preparing me for my career from day one. I was introduced to the speech and debate team, became a house representative (student government) for four years, and was introduced to the Scales of Justice Academy — which changed my life.”

In just our fourth year with Project Lead The Way (PLTW), 35 remarkable seniors earned their ‘White Coats’ recognizing three years in the program this year. At the second annual White Coat Ceremony Department Chair and PLTW program leader, Orlando Santiago stated, “I am proud the students with us today were willing to step up and take challenging biomedical science STEM coursework. They took a chance to become a part of something new and exciting and they have been rewarded with a great experience.”

Our guest speaker, Dr. Jeanette Toney ’05 — who practices medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee, spoke to the students about her time playing volleyball for Providence College while maintaining her grades as a Biology major and about the discipline required to navigate medical school. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is the largest nationally recognized STEM education nonprofit organization. PLTW partners with K-12 schools and educators and “through an engaging, handson curriculum, encourages the development of problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creative and innovative reasoning, and a love of learning.”

“The compelling, hands-on high school PLTW classroom experience changes the way students experience their education. Research demonstrates that PLTW students outperform their peers in school, are better prepared for post-secondary studies, and are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers, and researchers compared to their non-PLTW peers. The goal of PLTW is to provide students with a “path to college and career success in STEM related fields.” from PLTW

On a college tour, a Pre-Med student told me that prior to college, they had no real experience with medical equipment. This made me especially appreciate Loughlin and the Project Lead the Way Program — it has prepared me, and given me a head start. Chloe Inniss ‘20 plans to attend Long Island University Fall 2020.

ED BOWES ‘60 HONORED AT 47th ANNUAL MANHATTAN COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

Forty-six years after founding the Manhattan College Cross Country Invitational, the meet’s final stretch will be now be called ‘Ed Bowes Way’. A replica plaque of the new finish line was presented to Ed Bowes ‘60 — a 1964 Manhattan College alum — at the 47th annual meet in October 2019. The annual invitational, founded in 1973 by Bowes and held in Van Cortlandt Park, is the country’s largest one-day meet with 40 races and runners from across the country. 10

EDUCATORS ATTEND CIVIC SPIRIT INSTITUTE Bishop Loughlin educators Petrus Fortune (pictured above) and Bill Mason joined Jewish and Catholic school educators from New York, New Jersey, and California this year when they attended the Civic Spirit Summer Institute — an intensive civic education training conference. Bishop Loughlin is a vital member of the pioneering first cohort of faith-based schools revitalizing civic education across the country. At the Institute, teachers and administrators engage in conversation on teaching the principles of American democracy, civil discourse, and responsibilities of citizenship in the context of a religious community with varying political and philosophical views — ­ reinvigorating civics education for modern demands. “Civic Spirit Institute is an intensive, week-long civic education training program for faculty from faith-based schools to learn together. The Institute provides the opportunity to delve into America’s founding documents and discuss pedagogical tools for using primary sources, philosophical texts, and literature as a way of invoking civic connection and democratic fluency in the classroom.” (civicspirit.org)

CHAIR I am writing this letter in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic which has affected each of us in the very way we live our daily lives. My heart goes out to all in our Loughlin family and the greater community who have been affected by this virus and I pray for them. I pray also for our doctors, nurses, health care workers, first responders, grocery store clerks, and ALL essential workers who have kept our world going in the midst of this horrible virus. It has been a privilege and my joy to serve as Chair of the Board of Governors for the past few years. My term will end in June, 2020. I thank Bro. Dennis and my fellow Governors for entrusting me with this great responsibility. It has been a dynamic period of time in the history of our great Catholic school. I am proud to have led the board, in particular, through a transformational period as we have completed a series of capital projects between 2016 - 2020; including the creation of new labs (biomedical science and engineering), an art studio, our Campus Ministry office, the

new George Cappiello track, a repainted school yard, and installation of new floors (the gymnasium and auditorium stage). My predecessor, James Reynolds ‘63, was pivotal to this significant progress. The largest scale renovation in school history was completed early in 2019. In partnership with the Loughlin Foundation, we made vital repairs on all sides of our very large building. If you have not returned in recent months, you will be impressed, and think we look as good as new! As you will read in this report, we are not yet finished. Our Pave The Way Campaign will hopefully allow us to make important repairs and improvements in the space between the great Loughlin track and the building itself.

W

hen Kathie, my wife of 52 years, and I came back to Loughlin several years ago, we found the student body looked a little different than when I attended — there were girls! But we also found that the students had the same thirst for knowledge and the faculty, under Bro. Dennis’ leadership, was as dedicated to helping the students achieve their dreams. The diversity of the student body meant that many families likely faced similar financial challenges as my own family. When the Three Schools Campaign was launched in 2015, we realized that we might be able to ease some of those financial challenges by establishing an endowed scholarship fund to help ensure that a Loughlin education can be affordable to students of modest means. More recently, Bro. Dennis outlined the need to address some of the infrastructure issues with the Pave the Way Campaign.

Loughlin gave me the confidence to accept new challenges, the discipline to work hard at mastering new skills, and the moral foundation to try to do the right thing when faced with a difficult decision. Michael J. Castellano ‘63 Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School

Normally, we are more focused on grants that directly assist students, such as our endowed scholarship fund, rather than on capital campaigns. However, we share Bro. Dennis’ vision that the renovations of the courtyard will significantly add to the objective of creating an enhanced learning environment that is safe, welcoming, and appealing — to both current and prospective students. We also appreciate that an attractive campus reinforces that our students are part of something special. Accordingly, we are pleased to provide financial support to achieve this objective. It is out hope that this campaign meets goal, and that the Loughlin community will soon have a renovated courtyard. I was fortunate to have had a successful career in finance — and I have been blessed to have a supportive partner in life who reminds me how we have been helped throughout our lives — and to return that gift when we can.

PAVE THE WAY Leave a permanent legacy and support Loughlin at the same time. We invite you to PAVE THE WAY for Loughlin students. Engrave a brick in the Principal’s Courtyard! Honor or memorialize your parents, grandparents, a Christian Brother, lay teacher, coach or someone else important in your life. PAVE THE WAY is our campaign to restore, repair, and improve the courtyard area between the track and school building. Our stairs are in immediate need of repair, we are overdue in building a handicap accessible ramp, and we will create a welcoming courtyard with an attractive brick pathway. SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS We are grateful to the many alumni and friends who have established scholarship funds at Loughlin. The ability to offer scholarship aid is vital in our ability to fulfill our institutional mission. At Loughlin, we offer both ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS and ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS. Endowed Scholarship Funds must meet a minimum threshold before annual distribution to students whereas our Annual Scholarship Funds are annual gifts that support one or more students for the current academic year. The LOUGHLIN FOUNDATION holds a number of funds and distributes annual grants at their discretion. We encourage you to consider starting your own named fund. Named Annual Scholarship Funds start at $2,500 and Endowed Scholarship Funds start at $50,000.
