As I reach the end of my first term as Principal, I am filled with pride and appreciation for our remarkable school community. These past months have been a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we all work together. The new school year began welcoming lots of new families into our community. We were delighted to showcase new campus enhancements showing our commitment to investing and developing our facilities. Now in our 14th year, the BIS Hanoi International Festival, has become a firm feature in our school calendar is always a wonderful celebration where our whole school community comes together to celebrate all the things that unite us and our diversity which makes us such a vibrant and caring community. From parent stalls and activities to student performances and from student service projects to food and flavours from around the world - International Festival showcased the cultures, talents, and traditions that make our community so special. Moments like these like are truly heart-warming and show that BIS truly is a place to belong. From a successful IB inspection that affirmed the quality of our programmes, to exciting secondary trips, spirited House events, engaging Primary Parent Connect sessions, and the creativity and fun of Halloween celebrations, it has truly been a term full of energy and achievement.
What inspires us all at BIS Hanoi are our amazing students. In partnership with parents, we go above and beyond to ensure that our students thrive. We get to see the BIS difference and the value we add, not only in our IGCE and IB results, but through the way our students engage in serving others. Whether it is CAS parternships in the local community or Head Students striving to ensure all students at BIS feel connected, they embody our values of care, respect and integrity working to make our community and the world a better place. Our dedicated Friends of BIS have once again played a vital role in bringing families together. Their tireless work in organising events for parents and the wider community has helped us build connections and create a warm, welcoming school environment. Inside and outside the classroom, our students have experienced an inspiring range of learning opportunities. From a successful IB inspection that affirmed the quality of our programmes, to exciting secondary trips, spirited House events, engaging Primary Parent Connect sessions, and the creativity and fun of Halloween celebrations, it has truly been a term full of energy and achievement. The Moon Festival at BIS Hanoi was a joyful celebration of Vietnamese culture, filling the campus with colour, music and community spirit. On October 3rd, students and staff came together for a special assembly that brought this beloved tradition to life in a vibrant and meaningful way. The day began with a charming procession of our youngest learners from F1 to F3. Dressed in beautifully coloured áo dài, they proudly made their way into the auditorium, greeted by warm smiles and applause. Their entrance set the perfect tone for the celebrations ahead. The assembly then came alive with an exciting line-up of student performances spanning year groups. Audiences were treated to a rich mix of songs, dances and traditional pieces, including Lý Bắc Bộ by Years 4, 5 and 6; Lên thăm chú cuội by Years 4 and 5; Việt Nam trong tôi by Years 4 and 5; Xe đạp by Years 12 and 13; Tay Trái chỉ trăng by Year 10; Tứ phủ by Years 8 and 9; and Múa lụa by Years 8, 11, 12 and 13. The performances were met with enthusiastic applause, reflecting the pride and effort that students poured into each piece. Beyond the entertainment, the Moon Festival was a meaningful opportunity for students to honour their cultural heritage and share it with the school community. This annual celebration highlights BIS Hanoi’s commitment to embracing cultural traditions and creating shared experiences that unite students, staff and families.

THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2025 CELEBRATES THE VIBRANT SPIRIT OF THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY

The BIS Hanoi International Festival 2025 brought families, students and staff together to celebrate culture and community spirit. The event was filled with energy, connection and pride, reminding everyone why it’s one of the most anticipated moments of the year. As the school’s largest community celebration, the festival reflected our diverse and inclusive spirit. Families from around the world shared their traditions through cultural booths, live performances and food stalls. Visitors explored, tasted and experienced a
vibrant mix of cultures, all in one place. Cultural booths showcased the spirit of our community Parents played a leading role this year, transforming the campus into a lively culture showcase. Cultural booths representing Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brazil and Spain presented artefacts, traditional food, clothing and stories, offering families an authentic cultural experience. Community Street raised awareness and inspired actions This year’s community street welcomed a rising number of community partners who shared their initiatives and invited families to get involved. Organisations showcased projects, raised awareness and sold products to support important causes. Alongside them, CAS student groups presented their own projects with energy and passion. Their booths highlighted studentled efforts to create positive

change, adding a strong sense of purpose and community spirit to the festival. A new activity this year was the Stamp Rally. Students collected stamps by visiting parent cultural and CAS student booths, then spun the Fortune Wheel for fun prizes. It encouraged exploration, cultural connection and a sense of adventure, quickly becoming a festival favourite. Performances filled the stage with talent Across the day, students from across the school lit up the stage with a vibrant line-up of music and dance curated by the Performing Arts Team. Primary students opened the show with Fanga Alafia, a traditional West African song and dance that set the joyful tone. Year 4’s Flamenco Fireball brought passion and rhythm, followed by Year 5’s lively rendition of Volare! by the Gipsy Kings. The Primary K-pop CCA impressed with Rebel Heart, while the Year 10 Dance group brought Brazilian carnival energy with A Linha Curva. The Senior Choir closed with a powerful performance of Tarekita from India. Audiences also enjoyed a sneak peek of this year’s secondary production, West Side Story, with the cast performing ‘America’. Each

One of the festival’s most anticipated traditions, the raffle event, returned with plenty of excitement. Families gathered to join the draw for a wide range of prizes. Food, shopping and activities brought people together Families enjoyed a culinary journey through nearly 20 food stalls offering flavours from
around the world. Shopping and activity booths added to the vibrant atmosphere with crafts, unique merchandise and hands-on experiences. The game zone, run by BIS Hanoi teachers, offered fun for all ages and brought plenty of laughter and friendly competition. Together, these spaces created a warm environment where families could explore, connect and share stories. BIS HANOI YOUNG LEADERS TAKE ACTION AT THE PRIMARY STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE IN HO CHI MINH CITY Year 6 student leaders from BIS Hanoi joined peers from Nord Anglia schools in Vietnam for the Primary Student Leadership Conference in Ho Chi Minh City, building leadership skills and creating action plans for a sustainable future. Two days of leadership, learning, and action In September, 11 of our Year 6 House Captains and Student Council members travelled to

Ho Chi Minh City for the Primary Student Leadership Conference. They joined 42 young leaders from Nord Anglia schools in Vietnam, including BVIS Hanoi, BVIS HCMC, and BIS HCMC. Over two days, our students built leadership skills that will serve them in school and beyond. They practised teamwork, collaboration, confident presenting, and decision-making, then applied these skills to create action
plans for reducing waste and lowering their schools’ carbon footprints. The conference programme was full of highlights. Students heard an inspiring keynote on sustainability from Ms Thu, Sustainability Manager at Tetra Pak, and reflected on the importance of Integrity and Compassion in leadership through a thought-provoking session led by Mr Simon Higham, Principal of BIS HCMC. They also took part in practical workshops that focused on inspiring others and making meaningful change happen.
The first day centred on teamwork and communication. After interactive workshops, students worked in their school groups to brainstorm creative ways to reduce their carbon footprints. On the second day, they built on these foundations with energising team-building games and small-group collaborations that pushed them to think critically and problem-solve together. The conference came to a close with final presentations, where every student team confidently shared their action plans with peers.
Our BIS Hanoi leaders returned with new friendships, fresh ideas, and the confidence to make a positive impact on their community. At BIS Hanoi, we believe leadership starts early. FROM MOUNTAINS TO COASTLINES: BIS HANOI STUDENTS EMBARK ON UNFORGETTABLE LEARNING JOURNEYS ACROSS VIETNAM This term, students from Years 7 to 13 at BIS Hanoi embarked on a series of enriching residential trips across Vietnam. Each journey was designed to foster personal growth, cultural understanding, and a spirit of adventure. From the peaceful valleys of Mai Châu to the dramatic limestone cliffs of Cát Bà Island, the misty peaks of Sa Pa, and the highland forests of Đà Lạt, students embraced a wide range of experiences that challenged them physically, intellectually, and socially. These trips supported our curriculum goals while offering unforgettable opportunities to connect with nature and local communities.

Year 7 – Mai Chau Cultural Discovery Year 7 students explored the beautiful Ban Lac village, engaging in hikes, weaving workshops, bamboo rice cooking, and scavenger hunts. The Bamboo Challenge showcased their creativity and teamwork, while evening activities like traditional dance and a talent show added fun and connection. A tree-planting service project on the final day allowed students to reflect on their impact. They returned with new friendships and a deeper appreciation for Vietnamese culture. Year 8 – Cat Ba Island Adventure Year 8 enjoyed an action-packed trip to Cát Bà Island, taking part in raft building, orienteering, jungle cave hikes, kayaking, and rock climbing. Students showed impressive teamwork and resilience, especially during the raft challenge and kayaking games. Evening highlights included visits to the night market, traditional dance, and a lively talent show. They returned with lasting memories and a great sense of accomplishment.

Year 9 – Sa Pa Cultural & Outdoor Experience In Sa Pa, Year 9 students hiked to Fansipan Peak, explored the Buffalo Trail, and took part in survival workshops and the Bamboo Irrigation Challenge. Cultural activities included Hmong cooking, knot tying, and souvenir shopping. A treeplanting project allowed students to give back to the community. Their enthusiasm and teamwork were evident throughout, and they returned proud and inspired.

Year 10 - Da Lat Highland Outdoor Adventure Year 10 students ventured to Bidoup Nui Ba National Park in Đà Lạt, where they tackled high ropes, ziplining, canyoning, and a STEM-based raft-building challenge. They also contributed to the One Billion Trees Initiative, reforesting areas around the park. The Alpine Coaster and SUP challenge added extra thrills. Students demonstrated leadership and resilience throughout this rewarding adventure.

Year 11 - Thác Bà Lake Cultural Experience At Thác Bà Lake, Year 11 students stayed in a local homestay and took part in raft building, navigation hikes, and campfire craft sessions. They engaged with the community through village walks, traditional medicine workshops, and shrimp trap weaving. Cooking with homestay staff brought everyone together. The trip encouraged independence and cultural awareness, leaving students with lasting memories.

Year 12 - Mai Châu Service & Cultural Immersion Year 12 dedicated their trip to a community service project, constructing a concrete road on the outskirts of a village in Mai Chau. From shovelling and mixing cement to planting trees and building bamboo rafts, the students displayed unwavering determination and team spirit. They pushed through the physical challenges with a sense of pride and purpose, always looking out for one another. Their hard work and commitment to service truly embodied the spirit of BIS. The Year 12 students returned with a strong sense of accomplishment and a deeper understanding of the impact they can have on communities.

Year 13 - Cat Ba Island Final Year Adventure Year 13 students celebrated their final school year with a trip to Cát Bà Island. They cycled through Viet Hai village, kayaked in Lan Ha Bay, and tackled rock climbing challenges. Beach games and environmental efforts added to the experience. A bamboo weaving workshop and lively karaoke evenings created lasting memories. The trip was a fitting conclusion to their BIS journey. Across all year groups, students demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm, adaptability, and kindness. Whether building rafts, planting trees, navigating forest trails, or engaging in cultural exchanges, they consistently embodied the BIS values of respect, integrity, and care. These trips not only strengthened friendships and developed leadership skills, but also deepened students’ appreciation for Vietnam’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the way they embraced every challenge with positivity and curiosity. As they return to the classroom, they bring with them lasting memories, valuable lessons, and a renewed sense of confidence and connection.

CELEBRATING TEAMWORK, SPIRIT AND BELONGING: THE IMPORTANCE OF SPORTS DAY AT BIS HANOI This year is the first year we have introduced Sports Day for the whole of the Secondary School and what an incredible start it was! It wasn’t just about winning the game or scoring the most points, it was a celebration of teamwork, resilience, and that unstoppable house spirit that makes our community special. More than just a day of competition, it’s an opportunity for students to demonstrate commitment, cooperation, and pride in belonging to something bigger than themselves. Sports Day encourages every

student to take part, whether they are seasoned athletes or simply eager to contribute to their house’s success. We believe that sport has a unique ability to unite people. On this day, the whole school comes together, representing their houses with enthusiasm, determination, and support for one another. The friendly rivalry helps foster a sense of belonging, reminding us that teamwork and encouragement are as important as winning. Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of activities

designed to cater for all interests and abilities. From high-energy team sports such as football and 3x3 basketball to more inclusive activities like new age Kurling, aquatics and Just Dance. There was something for everyone to enjoy. For those who thrive on individual challenge, activities such as CrossFit offered an opportunity to push personal limits and demonstrate resilience. Every activity contributed to the overall house score, giving each student a role to play in the race for the new, very shiny, house trophy. Beyond the sporting achievements, Sports Day teaches valuable life lessons. Students learn to persevere when things get tough, to celebrate others’ success, and to show respect in both victory and defeat. These experiences strengthen character and build confidence qualities that extend well beyond the sports field.
Our year thirteen House Captains have also added to their repertoire, taking on the new event with gusto and pride, supporting the PE team from the start. They played an important role in the event, leading the assembly to boost sign-ups and house spirit and encouraging students to show their team spirit by joining the tug-of-war teams and cheering their houses on throughout the day’s activities. They continued to show their enthusiasm until to the very end, proudly stepping up to hear their’ team’s overall points and then the winning captain collecting the trophy on behalf of their house. A big shout-out to Tri Anh, Siwhan, Byeongyun, Minchan, Xuan Minh, Donggyu, Jiho and Andrew.
Sports Day reinforces our sense of community. Staff and students alike cheer each other on, creating an atmosphere of positivity and unity. The laughter, encouragement, and shared sense of purpose remind us all why teamwork and school spirit matter. By the end of the day, regardless of which house takes home the trophy, every student can feel proud of their effort, their resilience, and their contribution to something greater than themselves. Looking back, I see how much this year as a Head Student has stretched me. I’ve learned to embody the high expectations that BIS stands for, moving through school life with intention and care while inspiring others to do the same. I’m proud of the spirit of belonging we’ve created together: from our persistent efforts to encourage English usage across the school to the Cultural Awareness Assembly, where we worked through early doubts to craft a moment of genuine connection through dance. More than anything, I’m grateful for how BIS constantly challenges me to grow and lead with purpose.
One of my proudest moments as Head Student was leading our International Assembly this year, where we celebrated the diversity embedded in our school community. We began by sharing student-written scripts that highlighted the cultures and global contributions of all countries represented at our school. Wanting to create something more engaging, we brought together students and staff to choreograph a dance inspired by traditional movements from around the world. Teaching this dance to the entire secondary school was both meaningful and memorable. It taught me how collaboration and cultural awareness can strengthen our sense of belonging.

Serving as Head Student at BIS Hanoi has been an incredible privilege. Throughout this journey, we have worked to build a culture of kindness, courage, and genuine belonging. Together with my team, I have helped lead and support events such as assemblies, student-led initiatives, and community projects that foster a spirit of connection, companionship, and independence. In doing so, I have not only watched our school community grow in confidence and pride, but have also grown myself — learning to lead with empathy, to listen more deeply, and to trust that even small actions can create meaningful, lasting change.
Being a Head Student is more than being confident on stage. For me, it is a privilege because it means my voice is heard and can be used to support others. What I enjoy most is contributing to my community through small, everyday actions. Even if the impact is small, I value helping younger students by sharing my real experiences, not just the “perfect” parts. It is about always being responsible and being a role model both on stage and off, where we spend most of our time. This role has taught me that leadership is about listening, being honest, and creating a supportive environment where everyone can grow together.

FRIENDS OF BIS: TERM 1 RECAP - CELEBRATING COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION Term 1 has been a wonderful start to the school year for the Friends of BIS, our dedicated parent group that helps keep the BIS Hanoi community connected, supported, and thriving. Through their energy and commitment, parents had countless opportunities to meet one another, learn more about Hanoi, and celebrate the spirit of our school. 26 | BIS Hanoi
We began the term with the FOBIS Hanoi City Tour, a highlight especially for families new to Vietnam. Parents spent the morning exploring historic streets, learning fun facts about the city, and discovering hidden local gems. More importantly, it gave everyone the chance to form new friendships and settle into the school year feeling welcomed.
October brought one of the most anticipated events of the year, Halloween Trick or Treat. The campus came alive with creative costumes, spooky decorations, and plenty of laughter. Parents, staff, and students joined together for an afternoon of light-hearted fun that truly showcased the warmth and playfulness of our community.
A few weeks later, families came together again for Staff Appreciation Day, a heartfelt moment to thank the teachers and support staff who go above and beyond for our students. From thoughtful notes to delicious treats, the event was a touching reminder of how strong the partnership is between BIS Hanoi families and staff. Throughout the term, Friends of BIS continued hosting their regular Coffee & Chat sessions. These simple, friendly mornings allowed parents to relax, share experiences, and build a sense of belonging. The gatherings have become an anchor for many families, especially those settling into life in Hanoi.
We ended the term on a festive note with the Christmas Social, a cheerful and cosy celebration filled with conversation, holiday treats, and warm connections. An article that leaps off the page are our graduating class of 2025’s IBDP results, which were not only the best in Hanoi (and have been consistently for the last 5 years), but opened the doors to prestigious universities around the world. We are very BISProud of our long-standing tradition of students accessing their university course of first choice, whether that be a QS Top 200 university (which was the case for 60% of our 2025 graduating class) or a lesser known, smaller university, which offers a unique course, opportunity or location to students. Our teachers too have continued to learn, grow and challenge themselves professionally, with Ms Goodwin attending MIT in Massachusetts for a unique STEAM collaboration and the Performing Arts Team continuing to benefit from inspirational support and
learning from Juilliard. These collaborations are unique to Nord Anglia schools and ensure that our teachers continue to learn and grow professionally and, in turn, offer the best possible learning experience to our students. YEAR 10 IGCSE PROJECT: A CELEBRATION OF CURIOSITY, CREATIVITY AND STUDENT VOICE
In Terms 2 and 3 last academic year, our current Year 10 students took on an exciting challenge designed to spark curiosity and stretch their thinking before beginning their IGCSE journey. After a few introductory sessions to explore their interests and understand the aims of the project, students were given full freedom to choose their topic and decide how to present their learning. In June, they proudly showcased their work through a series of student-led workshops, and the range of ideas was incredible. From nostalgia and basketball to urban graffiti, ballet and hydroponics, students showed passion, independence and a genuine curiosity about the world. THANH LUONG (10S) & DANG MINH (10B) "Our project started with two tired kids at the end of the year who shared a love for urban street culture. DM didn't know where to start and TL wanted to do everything. Urban Culture became our middle ground. Every piece of graffiti felt like a story, every skateboard held a memory and every song felt like an anthem. Our planning was simple but it helped us explore the subjects we love and discover our passions. We learned how to analyse ideas more deeply and approach big topics with curiosity. Our biggest lesson was that valuable skills are not always taught in classrooms. They grow from passion."
FABRICIO (10H) "Presenting my hydroponics project to the class was a fun and memorable experience. After weeks of preparation, I was excited but nervous to share my work. As I explained how hydroponics works, I could see my classmates were interested. My slides helped show the process and how to build a system. Answering questions was the biggest challenge, some were difficult, but I did my best. Overall, I enjoyed presenting something I’m passionate about. It helped me realise how important hydroponics could be for future sustainable agriculture, and I’m eager to keep learning and sharing more."

It was a fun experience that motivated me to learn about Trump in detail. I chose to learn about Trump as he is making radical changes in the world and a major player in the economy. The teachers helped a lot by having frequent check ins and making sure that we were on track. I enjoyed presenting my project and it helped my confidence. Overall I’m very happy that I got a chance to take part in this project as it expanded my knowledge, helped with my time organisation and presenting skills.
For my KS3 project, I designed a small website explaining the basic steps behind solving homicide cases. I was inspired by true crime documentaries and books I was reading at the time. As a child, I loved mystery stories and that played a big part in choosing my topic. This project taught me how to reference my research properly and evaluate sources, which are skills I will use a lot in my GCSEs. I really enjoyed making my website and I know it will help me with future research-based assignments.

"For my project, I created and led a beginner ballet workshop for my classmates. Ballet is very different from other dance styles because it is more disciplined and structured. Since I already do ballet outside of school, I was able to teach basic techniques like pliés and tendus. I loved planning the lesson and creating a short routine. Teaching my classmates was rewarding and made me excited about becoming a teacher in the future. I also learned how challenging it is to keep a class focused, and it gave me a new appreciation for my teachers."
"We investigated how food tests identify nutrients such as starch, glucose, protein and fat. We used iodine, Benedict’s solution, Biuret reagent and ethanol to carry out each test. This helped us understand how scientists detect nutrients and how this links to a balanced diet. We also researched diabetes and learned about managing sugar intake and blood glucose levels. The project strengthened our practical skills and helped us connect biology to real life, which will be extremely useful for IGCSE."
"Over the summer between Year 9 and 10, Mr Wright gave us a research project with no specific requirements just choose any topic. I decided to spend four hours writing a 1,500-word essay on LeBron James. Surprisingly, it really helped me prepare for the start of iGCSE by giving me practice generating ideas and expanding my vocabulary. It also boosted my confidence, knowing I could write a full essay on a topic I chose myself, and I’m sure this will support my writing in future iGCSE projects."

Many schools talk about helping students develop a “love for learning.” But what does this really mean? Is it about enjoying a favourite subject, or feeling motivated to study harder for exams? At the British International School (BIS) Hanoi, it goes much deeper. A love for learning means nurturing curiosity, encouraging independence, and showing students that knowledge connects far beyond the boundaries of a textbook. For Gia Khanh, a Year 13 student and Head Student at BIS Hanoi, this has been her experience. Inspired by her teachers and supported by her community, she has come to see learning as something meaningful, purposeful, and lifelong. Embracing challenge and independence in the IBDP Gia Khanh is the epitome of what it means to be a BIS
Hanoi student: compassionate, confident, articulate, a leader, intellectually curious, and deeply thoughtful. In our conversation with her, she spoke movingly about her teachers and the BIS Hanoi staff—how they have shaped her journey, created safe spaces for her to be herself, encouraged her to take on challenges, and supported her every step of the way. As a Year 13 student studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), Khanh has learned to embrace both challenge and independence. “I really like to explore the topics beyond the textbook, so that’s what the IA (Internal Assessment) and EEs (Extended Essay) are for. It forces us to be independent, and I think that prepares us a lot for university because we will have to do a lot of research.” For Gia Khanh, research is not
just an academic requirement; it is a chance to explore topics that genuinely spark her curiosity. One moment in Vietnamese class with her teacher, the Head of Vietnamese, Ms Hai, proved transformative. “Ms Hai inspired us to go beyond the curriculum. We learned about The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh. I went into a discussion with her after class, and she encouraged me to research more. I got my first research paper, a literary paper on The Sorrow of War, published.” Becoming a published scholar Gia Khanh’s paper, Conceptual Metaphor and Eco-Temporality in Bao Ninh’s The Sorrow of War, was published in The Schola, a global journal that showcases the best scholarly work by high school students around the world. Out of thousands of submissions, only nine students were selected, making Khanh the youngest author featured. Reflecting on the experience, Gia Khanh said, “Mrs Hai’s guidance was invaluable in shaping my research paper.”

He’s very open to students, he always welcomes us and always checks in with us, whether our wellbeing is ok. BEST EAL PROGRAMME IN HANOI? HOW BIS HANOI STUDENTS GO FROM BEGINNER TO IB-READY Learning English in an international school setting Many parents assume their child needs strong English skills to access an international education. As a result, they often turn to English centres, hoping that one day their child will be ready to enrol. While this may be true for some schools, others, like BIS Hanoi, take a different approach. At BIS Hanoi, English as an Additional Language (EAL) is not a separate track, but a wholeschool commitment. Specialist EAL educators work closely with classroom teachers who are trained to support multilingual learners. This integrated model helps students progress from limited English proficiency to confident, independent learners capable of achieving outstanding academic outcomes. The 46 | BIS Hanoi
immersive environment ensures incredible progression. Mr. Quoc Minh, a BIS Hanoi parent, explained: “We have many English teaching schools in Hanoi, but BIS is the only British school. And from my personal point of view, once you study English, you need to send them to the British school.” His daughter joined BIS Hanoi after attending a local public school with limited English exposure. Today, she’s thriving. “The final result doesn’t lie, right? She got offers from three medical universities in Europe.” At the British International School Hanoi, students enter with varying levels of English ability and with the right support, they adapt quickly and grow with confidence.

That helps them build confidence,” explained Ms Laurence Cabanne, newly appointed Head of Primary. “A child who joined two years ago with absolutely no English has now graduated from the EAL programme. He’s made leaps and bounds of progress, and in a very short time frame.” Ms Sumin Min, a parent of two children at BIS Hanoi, shared how her son progressed after joining in Early Years. “He didn’t speak any English at all. He couldn’t understand what they said. He just came to school and listened. The class teacher supported him to speak, to play with his friends. After two years, he was totally different. We could really see the results, and that’s exciting.”

BIS HANOI STUDENT AMBASSADOR ATTENDS THE 2025 NORD ANGLIA STUDENT SUMMIT IN HOUSTON (US) At the end of last academic year, Tiago (Year 12, now Year 13) proudly represented BIS Hanoi at the 2025 Nord Anglia Education Student Summit (NAE Summit) in Houston, Texas. The summit, hosted by The Village School, welcomed over 160 students from 54 Nord Anglia schools worldwide. Thanks to Nord Anglia’s collaboration with UNICEF, this annual event gives students the opportunity to explore real-world issues connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while developing their 52 | BIS Hanoi
leadership and advocacy skills. For Tiago, it was a trip filled with new learning and powerful moments. Throughout the week, he joined expert-led workshops, collaborated on projects with international peers, and explored themes such as sustainability, global citizenship, leadership, and children’s rights. Reflecting on his experience, he described how one particular discussion left a lasting impression. A teacher originally from Kenya, now working in China, shared details of a social programme he had developed in his school.
The story, which highlighted the tangible impact of education on communities, deeply moved Tiago and reinforced his own commitment to making a difference. Living in the same dormitory as students from so many different countries was another highlight. Tiago loved meeting people from cultures he might never have encountered otherwise, and he described the experience of exchanging ideas and perspectives as “incredible.” Leadership was the main theme
of the summit. Through a variety of group activities, Tiago and his peers were encouraged to step forward, take responsibility, and guide their teams. These experiences helped Tiago understand leadership in a new way: not only about leading, but also about working together towards a shared purpose and helping others succeed. As part of a team of seven students from across Vietnam, Tiago worked on the SDG of reducing inequalities, with a focus on healthcare access. The group explored the reality that many
people in rural Vietnam do not have access to quality prosthetics and often rely on homemade alternatives. Their proposal was a school-led programme to help distribute small numbers of affordable, higher-quality prosthetics tailored to local needs. Looking back, Tiago feels the summit gave him more than just knowledge. It strengthened his ability to collaborate in groups, create solutions together, and share ideas with conf idence. These skills, he believes, will be
valuable for his future studies and beyond. When asked what advice he would give to future participants, Tiago didn’t hesitate: “Don’t be afraid to speak with people. That’s one of the best parts of the summit, meeting others, sharing experiences, and learning new things.” We’re incredibly proud of Tiago for representing BIS Hanoi at such an inspiring global event and for bringing back insights that will inspire our whole community.

BRINGING MIT’S MOTTO ‘MIND AND HAND’ TO BIS HANOI
In June, I was privileged to join over 50 educators from around the world for the MIT STEAM Teacher Professional Development Week in Boston, MA. The experience was an intense immersion into MIT’s famous philosophy of Mens et Manus - “Mind and Hand.” Over five days, we engaged in more than 20 workshops, lectures, and hands-on projects, connecting directly with MIT experts at the forefront of research.

In ‘Building a Structure in Space,’ teams will design a structure that can transform based on its environment, much like a space habitat. 3. The ‘Building Community’ challenge will require
collaboration to create a meaningful solution using unconventional materials. This hands-on day will develop critical skills in teamwork, innovation, and rapid prototyping. To ensure every student benefits from this world-class approach, I will be running a dedicated Teacher Professional Development Pathway. This program is designed to empower
our teachers to collaboratively design and implement an interdisciplinary STEAM curriculum that links multiple subject areas, inspired by the MIT Collaboration framework. The ultimate goal is to break down traditional subject barriers and equip our staff with the pedagogical skills to guide openended, project-based learning. As a key activity, teachers will work in interdisciplinary teams to co-design STEAM lessons that fuse their respective subjects. STEAM AT BIS HANOI: FROM FORCES TO MARS AND BEYOND!
Term 1 at the BIS Hanoi has been a wonderful celebration of STEAM, where science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics come together to inspire creativity and innovation. Our STEAM team has reached for the stars this year, collaborating to design and build Mars colony space stations for the SpaceX mission to Mars. This ambitious project is part of the annual MIT Challenge, set by world-leading professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Skylar Tibbits and his MIT team, who are pioneering advanced building materials for life on Mars, challenged BIS students to create stations that ensure survival in the harsh Martian environment. Working in teams, our students combined coding, 56 | BIS Hanoi
robotics, structural engineering, and design thinking to produce imaginative prototypes that could one day support human life on the Red Planet. Back on Earth, Year 3 explored forces through their IPC unit Feel the Force. Teams worked collaboratively to design and build marble runs using tools such as staple guns and glue guns. Their prototypes had to harness the power of gravity to pull marbles down the runs while using friction to slow and control movement, an exciting hands-on way to understand physics in action. Year 4 brought science to life with their IPC unit Materials & the Water Cycle. Students worked in teams to create 3D models that
clearly explained evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, using a variety of materials to make learning interactive and fun. Meanwhile, Year 5 celebrated Earth’s geography through the IPC unit Earth as an Island. Teams researched natural wonders and built stunning 3D Modroc models, creating wire frames for structure, layering Modroc, and painting detailed prototypes that showcased both artistic skill and engineering precision. JUILLIARD COLLABORATION INSPIRES CREATIVITY ACROSS PERFORMING ARTS Our ongoing collaboration with The Juilliard School continued to inspire and elevate our creative work across the Performing Arts. We were delighted to welcome Erin Wight, our Juilliard music specialist, to BIS Hanoi for her annual in-person visit. Over two busy days, Erin led a range of activities, including staff professional development, student workshops, demonstration lessons, and coaching sessions. Students in Years 7 and 10 particularly benefited from her lessons, gaining fresh perspectives on music-making through the eyes of a creative professional. Experiences like these reminded us how valuable it is to learn from others and 58 | BIS Hanoi
appreciate diverse approaches to music and performance. Our Senior Choir also enjoyed working with Erin as they prepared for the Remembrance Day Service. Her insights helped them navigate the harmonic challenges and expressive phrasing of their repertoire. Students in Years 7 and 10 particularly benefited from her lessons, gaining fresh perspectives on music-making through the eyes of a creative professional.
This year’s Secondary Production was West Side Story, and rehearsals were already in full swing during her visit. At the Open Rehearsal, staff and students had the chance to see the creative process in action as the cast prepared for opening night. Erin’s visit was perfectly timed; she joined our orchestra, sharing her expertise as a viola player to enhance the
ensemble’s sound and coach our string players in techniques that brought greater musicality and depth to their performance. The production orchestra, led by our music teacher Ms. Lemay, included both students and staff. It was a true celebration of our school community’s lifelong love of music. Directed by Ms. Warner (Drama/Dance teacher) and choreographed by Ms. Russell (Dance teacher), this year’s production became a wonderful showcase of creativity and talent at BIS Hanoi. On 26 and 27 November, the Secondary Performing Arts team proudly presented West Side Story, delivering two unforgettable evenings of music, dance, and powerful storytelling. The production brought together secondary students, teachers, and staff in a vibrant celebration of creativity and collaboration. Among the talented cast was Harry (Year 9), who took on the role of Bernardo, leader of the Sharks. Reflecting on the

experience, he shared how the production helped him grow personally: “It's helped me to build my confidence when I do public speak and to help me to speak with lots of people.” Taking centre stage as Maria was NK (Year 12), who described the complexity of portraying such an iconic character: “The challenging part is to balance that sweetness in Maria's character with the sassiness… and incorporate that in all her

The pair

BIS HANOI SHARES INSIGHTS AT THE INAUGURAL VIETNAM EDUCATION FORUM 2025 The British International School Hanoi, alongside the other Nord Anglia schools in Vietnam, was invited to contribute insights at the inaugural Vietnam Education Forum 2025, hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam on November 11 in Hanoi. Following the official visit of General Secretary To Lam to the UK from October 28 to 30, at the invitation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Vietnam and the UK agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), as stated in a joint declaration released on October 29. 62 | BIS Hanoi
As the two countries strengthen their bilateral ties, education has continued to become a crucial area of cooperation. The Vietnam Education Forum aimed to explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation in education between the two countries. The event welcomed representatives from Vietnam’s Ministry of Education & Training, the UK Government, the British Council, major universities, and international schools to explore new opportunities for collaboration between Vietnam and the United Kingdom. The UK Ambassador to Vietnam, H.E. Iain Frew, opened the
forum by highlighting how AI and digital transformation are reshaping the global education landscape. He also emphasised that the upgraded UK–Vietnam relationship provides a strong framework for deeper cooperation in higher education, vocational training, and the development of futureready human resources. Dr Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Education and Training, echoed this message, reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to international engagement to elevate the nation’s education sector.
A highlight of the day was the presentation by our Head of Primary, Ms Laurence Cabanne, as one of the forum’s guest speakers. In her workshop, “Unlocking Global Competence – Rethinking Teacher Training to Prepare Students for a Global Future,” she spoke about how developing our teachers is key to helping students succeed in an increasingly connected world. Using examples from BIS Hanoi, she shared practical ideas on building global citizenship, strengthening cross-cultural understanding, and supporting teachers as technology continues to evolve. Ms Laurence explained that great teaching starts with truly understanding students and the context they come from. When teachers adapt their approach to fit their students’ experiences, learning becomes more
meaningful and easier to relate to. She highlighted that context shouldn’t be seen as a limitation, but as an opportunity to make learning more engaging and relevant. She also reminded the audience that strong relationships lie at the heart of good education— Maslow before Bloom—and that helping students develop global skills begins with knowing who they are and what they need. Her session offered a clear and inspiring look at how schools can better support teachers so that every child can thrive. As one of the four Nord Anglia Education schools in Vietnam, our school joined colleagues from across the country in hosting a booth at the event. The booth introduced attendees to our international programmes, innovative learning approaches, and the global opportunities that students experience within our
educational community. Event guests, including educators, partners and leaders, visited the booth to learn more about how Nord Anglia schools support personalised, future-focused learning for students in Vietnam. On September 13 and 14, the Chalk Road project brought learning and inspiration to Trường Phổ thông Dân tộc Nội trú THCS Yên Sơn in Tuyên Quang. This marked the eighth trip for the project since its establishment in July 2023 by our students Gia Khanh, Thai Anh, and Khanh Linh. The project successfully secured the Nord Anglia Education Social Impact Grant of $9,000 later that year, which allowed them to
expand their initiatives. The team consists of student volunteers not only from BIS Hanoi but also from various high schools across the city. Chalk Road was founded with the meaningful purpose of sharing knowledge and promoting sustainable, holistic education for students in under-resourced schools. Two years later, it has evolved into a student-led
initiative that is making a lasting impact on children in Vietnam’s mountainous regions. Workshops that build confidence and skills During the visit, students at Yên Sơn participated in interactive workshops aimed at helping them think about their futures. Sessions focused on goal setting, soft skills, and creative expression. The team also organised sports and art activities that promoted teamwork, resilience, and a joy for learning. These workshops provided local students with the opportunity to acquire new skills and envision new possibilities. “I was especially relieved and content to see the students engage and participate with utmost enthusiasm in every activity, which reassured me that the trip was indeed impactful. I believe taking part in art, sports, cybersecurity and drama workshops helped nurture the children's creativity, teamwork and critical thinking skills in ways
they might not be used in their daily school lives”, shared Srinjoy, a Year 11 member of the Chalk Road team. Resources that support learning and wellbeing In addition to the workshops, Chalk Road volunteers delivered essential resources to enhance life at the school. The team donated 310 new mattresses for the dormitory, hundreds of books in both Vietnamese and English, as well as footballs, volleyballs, badminton sets, and art supplies. The total value of these resources exceeded 110 million VND. These contributions provide practical support and create opportunities for students to enjoy learning beyond the classroom. The visit to Tuyên Quang marks another significant step in the Chalk Road journey. Since 2023, the project team has travelled to Phú Thọ and Thanh Hóa, where students have led activities and shared resources with schools in under-resourced communities.
Each trip has strengthened the team’s commitment to holistic education and student wellbeing, while inspiring more young people to believe in their potential. “Reminiscing about this year’s Chalk Road trip, I can confidently say that it was a very fulfilling and memorable experience. This term, our Year 6 students at the British International School (BIS) Hanoi successfully translated their lessons into real-world impact, completing an inspiring, persuasive writing project to launch a school-wide fundraiser for Animals Asia, an organisation dedicated to ending bear bile farming and protecting animal welfare across Asia.

Year 6 students drafted formal letters to Ms Cabanne, Head of Primary, proposing a NonUniform Day to generate funds for Animals Asia. In their compelling proposals, students clearly articulated the event's purpose, detailed the logistical plan, and passionately explained why the cause was personally meaningful. They suggested that Year 5 and 6 students wear animal-themed clothing in exchange for a 50,000 VND donation. To maximise community impact, they also proposed creating a donation box in the school reception area for wider contributions from families and staff. Students take the lead organising the fundraiser

To connect the campaign directly to their learning, excerpts from their original persuasive letters were displayed alongside the box to inspire contributions from the school community. BIS HANOI LIONHEARTS BRING THE ENERGY AT U15 FOBISIA SPORTS TOURNAMENT 2025 68 | BIS Hanoi
Our Lionhearts returned from the U15 FOBISIA Sports Games after four action-packed days that highlighted their resilience, teamwork, and talent across athletics, swimming, football and basketball. Here is a look back at their memorable journey. Day 1: Strong starts in athletics and swimming The competition opened with an inspiring morning on the athletics track. In the track events, the Girls’ 4x100m Relay Team with Leeel and Haeun earned a brilliant Bronze medal. In the 800m, Haesol won Silver and Qian collected Bronze, while Gia Huy
showed excellent stamina to take Silver in the 1500m. The field events brought even more success. Bao Nam claimed Gold in Triple Jump and Xuan Phuc secured Gold in Shot Put. Gia Huy added a Silver in Javelin, while Jinwoo earned a Bronze in Long Jump and Kaeden contributed a Bronze in Discus. The momentum continued in the pool during the afternoon session. The Boys’ Medley Relay team of Caleb, Ruda, Kaeden and Bao Nam stormed to Gold. Two more Medley and Freestyle relay teams featuring swimmers such as Xuan Phuc, Haesol, Duc Anh and Kaeden added Bronze medals.
Individually, swimmers shone across all strokes. Xuan Phuc took Gold in the 25m Breaststroke. Leeel earned three Bronzes, while Haesol won two Silvers. Nam Khanh collected a Silver and a Bronze. More medals came from Seongwoo with a Silver and from Bao Nam, Jinwoo and Caleb, who all earned Bronze finishes. It was an outstanding start for the whole team. Day 2: A thrilling day of football The girls played with courage and determination throughout a very competitive group stage. Their 3-2 win over ISB, with goals from Haeun and Leeel, secured a place in the Bronze Medal Match. They finished 4th after
a close 1–0 loss and should be proud of their performances. The boys showed great spirit across a demanding series of matches. Their 3-0 win against KTJ featured two goals from Haesol and one from Xuan Phuc. In the Bronze Medal Match, the team pushed hard with goals from Haesol and David. Both David and Dingseok came close to equalising before the final whistle, and the boys finished 4th after a thrilling game. Day 3: Basketball and final wrap-up The girls played confidently throughout the day and demonstrated how much they
had grown as a team. They finished in a very respectable 5th place. The boys fought through a tough schedule and produced a powerful 21-7 win that carried them into the Bronze Medal Match. They battled hard until the last moments before finishing 4th in a close and exciting contest. Throughout all three days, our students showed teamwork, determination and true Lionheart spirit. We are incredibly proud of every athlete and the way they represented BIS Hanoi at this year’s FOBISIA Games.

LIONHEARTS SPIRIT ON DISPLAY: A STANDOUT TERM FOR BIS HANOI SPORT What an incredible Term 1 it has been for sport at BIS Hanoi! Our Lionhearts have thrown themselves into training, fixtures, and festivals with energy, pride, and real determination. From packed HAC schedules to international competitions, this term has showcased the very best of our sporting community. This term has delivered some brilliant moments across the board. In the Hanoi Activities Conference (HAC), our Junior Varsity and Varsity volleyball squads set the tone with fast70 | BIS Hanoi
paced rallies, sharp teamwork, and plenty of standout performances. A special shoutout to our Junior Varsity Girls, who battled their way to a fantastic runners-up finish, a huge achievement and thoroughly deserved. Middle School athletes have been equally impressive. Our boys and girls basketball teams brought energy and excitement to both competitive and festival events, showing great improvement, team chemistry, and sportsmanship every step of the way.
Meanwhile, our Primary students stole the show with two action-packed football festivals. The goals were flowing, the smiles were huge, and the teamwork was outstanding. Their focus now shifts to Fireball Volleyball a crowd-pleasing favourite and we cannot wait to see how they rise to the challenge. As always, HAC continues to offer competitions for everyone. With Season 2 underway, our Junior Varsity and Varsity squads are now deep in basketball mode, while our Middle School athletes sharpen their skills
on the football pitch. The buzz around campus is electric. And last but certainly not least-a huge round of applause for our incredible Swim Team, who made a splash at the UNIS International Swim Meet. Against 22 top international schools, BIS Hanoi powered their way to an impressive 10thplace finish. Their hard work in the pool is paying off, and we’re excited to see them continue making waves-literally! Here’s to a fantastic Term 1, and an even bigger and better Season 2.

Term 1 has been an exceptional start to our Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) programme, with record participation and a growing sense of creativity, confidence and community across the school. This year, more students than ever before engaged in CCAs, demonstrating curiosity, commitment and a willingness to try something new. From sport and the arts to digital design, languages, clubs and academic enrichment, our programme continues to strengthen in both quality and breadth.

It has also been wonderful to see leadership and student voice flourish. Many CCAs, including Robotics, Baseball, Reading Mentoring and Debate, have been supported or fully led by our older students, modelling initiative and responsibility while creating supportive spaces for younger learners.
