The Publisher The Fitness MODEL Issue In this third issue of BodyScape Magazine, I am so excited to showcase some of my favorite work, both new and archived. I’ve been told that my work over the years has transformed the way that fitness “models” were shot. I take an entire scene or idea and roll that concept in to a photo shoot. My prior experience in front of the camera back in the stone ages taught me a lot about how to pose, how to create a mood or a vibe, and how to execute that mood in to a photograph. Most of these people have stepped on the competition stage a time or two in their life, (that’s an understatement!) and there are also those people that are naturally gifted in the genetics department and very fit, but aren’t “models”. Then, there are people that model already that have an amazing physique. I’ve been extremely blessed in my 10 years of shooting professionally to have worked with ALL of the above. But not ALL are natural MODELS. To take someone with not-so-much experience in front of the camera, and turn their entire feeling about themselves around isn’t always easy. People have hang-ups about themselves. I get it! I’ve been where they are. Posing, the overall shoot environment, communication and support is what helps people get “there”. One of the purposes of this magazine is to showcase not only my work, but what my clients have worked so hard for. This is the issue that showcases these fit physiques and amazing people as MODELS. You’ll definitely recognize some of the more ICONIC figures in the fitness industry. With coaching, posing assistance, and in some cases, wardrobe styling, I have been able to create some masterpieces over the years, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to show them to you. *If you’d like to create some photographic masterpieces, and also have a shot at being published in BodyScape Magazine, send us an email to: info@BodyScapeMag.com

The Editor Allow me to introduce myself
Hi. My name is Mike Lyons and my claim to fame is that I’m Sarah’s Dad. She has me listed as editor in chief, although I wish she’d drop the “in chief” part. Too pretentious, If you ask me. Besides with the editor in chief part, that puts more pressure on me to be chief. Too much to live up to. Anyway, I was in the newspaper business for 35 years and taught journalism at East Tennessee State University. I managed to pick up a couple of national awards during that time. One was for feature writing and the other was for photography. It always helps if you are in the right place at the right time. The photo just takes care of itself. Just point and shoot and hope the tech in the photo lab can save it. I’m dating myself by placing what I’ve done in the dark ages before Digital Photography and Photoshop. Sarah does a great job with those, don’t you think? I spent most of my time on the News Desks at The San Francisco Examiner and The Seattle Times. I also was the managing editor of a daily paper in Tennessee. My main responsibility, though, was editing what we wanted to get in the paper. I’m pretty sensitive to reporters’ massive egos. I was one and felt like starting World War III with the editor if anything was changed. Heaven forbid if I changed one little, teeny comma. You’d think hell would freeze over and that by changing that comma, I’d completely butchered the story. My main role at BodyScape Magazine is to prepare stories that you submit to Sarah for publication. There’s nothing personal if I edit a story. I’m only trying to make the writer look good and more often than not save them the embarrassment of a major mistake. So, if you do pitch a story to Sarah, just know that it will be treated with the TLC it deserves. Send us an email to editor@bodyscapemag.com

Scott Keppel Scott’s Training Systems http://www.scottkeppel.com http://www.scottstrainingsystems.com
You’re looking to get into the world of fitness modeling or maybe you’ve been in the field for quite some time and you’re not sure what you should do to get in the best shape you possibly can. You may be asking yourself, which is best for me? Lifting? Cardio? Or is it both? These are questions that I am asked on a daily basis from fitness models, competitors and pageant contestants. If your goal is immediate weight loss, cardio is your best bet. You will burn more calories in a cardio session than you will during a resistance training workout. A 155 lb individual can burn over 1100 calories running in an hour while vigorous weight lifting for an hour will burn approximately 450 calories. Comparing the numbers, one can easily see that if you need to drop weight soon, cardio along with healthy eating is the way to go. Now if we are talking about a lifestyle change and what is best to keep weight off, the winner is weight lifting with aerobic activity incorporated throughout the workout. Cardio is great for the cardiovascular system and burning calories while doing the particular activity. However, this EPOC (Excess Post Oxygen Consumption) benefit where your body will still burn calories even though you’re done working can last up to 16 hours max. While impressive and beneficial, what about the rest of the hours in the day and the days you’re not working out? Lifting builds lean mass and the more lean muscle you have you the more calories you burn. 1 lb of fat burns approximately 8 calories a day. A lb of muscle burns 20-100 calories a day.
In 2006, researchers at McMaster University in Ontario tested subjects’ body image; how they felt about others checking them out, and how satisfied they were with their own appearance before and after 12 weeks of strength training. The women made significant improvements, and they were particularly influenced by the physical results of increasing the amount lifted. By placing greater stress on the body than it is accustomed to by adding resistance training, the body must adapt and build more lean muscle. So if you want the weight to come off and stay off and you can only lift or do cardio, I recommend you to lift weights and throughout the workout incorporate cardio as active recovery to help keep the heart rate elevated. This can be done by doing jumping jacks, jump rope, getting on a piece of cardio equipment, battling ropes, smash balls, etc... I am an advocate of weight training with cardio throughout the workout (the cardio keeps the heart rate elevated and weights build lean muscle that burn more calories). The ideal situation is to lift for 1⁄2 hour to 45 minutes and then do 1⁄2 hour to 45 minutes of cardio along with a sound nutrition plan. Even better would be to do cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach then lift later in the day. Doing the cardio on an empty stomach can help you burn fat more efficiently. Now I know, some of you may be worried about your weight. Keep in mind, muscle is more dense than fat. It does not weigh more. A pound is a pound. What this means, if you were to lose 5 lbs of fat and gain 5 lbs of muscle while keeping your weight the same you would notice that you’d be down 4-6 inches! When looking to model, the look is more important than the weight, so grab some weights and build some lean muscle! Just in case you need more evidence to why you want to make the time to lift weights and continue to do some cardio, here are some more fun facts:
115
* European Journal of Sports Science say to go at it 3 to 5 days a week and you can cut fatigue by nearly 50 percent. “Cardio elevates serotonin levels in the brain, a key neurotransmitter involved in improving symptoms of depression,” says Madhukar Trivedi, M.D., director of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Mood Disorders Research Program and Clinic. * Wayne Westcott, Ph.D., director of research at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, Massachusetts states that for every 3 lbs of muscle you have, you’ll burn 120 calories more a day, just hanging out. Ariana Miyoko Hernandez BodyScape Magazine Issue 3 Cover Model I first met “Ari” as her friends so fondly call her through her coach and great friend of mine, Tammy Streich, about five years ago. Ari is one of the most humble, grateful and kind women I have ever met. She is a motivator, an incredible “top five in the world” pro athlete, a genetic wonder, and a gentle soul that I am proud to also call a friend. Ari had no idea that she would be on the cover of this issue of BodyScape Magazine. I’m ecstatic to introduce Ari through my eyes and vision, and tell you a bit about her and what she has endured, and accomplished up until now. Meet Ariana Miyoko Hernandez

“I would rather experience the good and bad, overcome life’s many obstacles and learn from them, fail many times only to get up and try again, and to know that I have put my all into every area of my life only to become the best version of myself that I can be.”
Meditation…meditation is what has saved me from being too hard on myself and lost in my own mind.
This is my motto and the these affirmations are what I have lived by my majority of my life. See, the thing is that life does not come easy, and boy do I know a whole lot about that as I’m sure most do, but to get through the tough times without giving up on your hopes and dreams is the most rewarding feeling in defining who you are. I’d like to share with you how I have changed my mindset in the midst of all of life’s challenges, and have become more than the WBFF 2017 North American Fitness Champion.
I received my pro card in my first fitness competition with the World Beauty Fitness and Fashion federation, also known worldwide as “The WBFF”.
Here’s just a bit about my background. I’m Arianna Miyoko Hernandez, but everyone calls me Ari or Aria for short. I grew up in El Paso, Texas, and yes, if you’ve noticed my middle and last name, I am indeed a mixture of Japanese, Mexican, and Puerto Rican. I’ve grown up with my best friend (my mom) and father who I lost to a heart attack on Easter Day at 11 years old. although that was a difficult time for me growing up, It was at that point that I knew I wanted to live a healthier lifestyle. Throughout high school, I played almost every sport one could play, and gave my all to become a 5’2 3/4” varsity athlete as a freshman and sophomore in basketball and track, which didn’t come easy as I was being pushed by coaches and bullied by other classmates. At 17 years old I decided to prep for my first fitness competition, where I placed third in the “open” category, and at that point, I truly fell in love with fitness. I was depressed in my late teens and early twenties, when I moved to Houston alone and knowing no one, for college. It was the deep rooted suppressed feelings that finally came to light and those feelings were affecting me daily.
At 22 I decided to step on the fitness stage again, as I felt that going back to what I loved doing and eating clean would initiate that positive mentality, which it did!
From 2013 up to today, I have competed in five pro shows, all of which I placed amongst the top 3 or top 5! Although I haven’t yet achieved that first place title that I’d always longed for, I never give up. Through all of the challenges in my way, failure was not an option. In December 2017, I competed to be the WBFF North American Champion and I made it! I won! It’s not the title given to me that made me feel accomplished, but knowing all that I have gone through in life to get to this point and conquering whatever I set my mind to is a real thing and sets one apart from the rest. Life is never always easy for anyone and it is too short to never take advantage of what you want. So go out and get it and I know that you will find yourself surprised with how far your mindset and ambition can take you on your journey!

How to take your look from day to GLAM! By Allison Pynn MAKEUP * HAIR STYLING * BODYPAINTING |
www.makeupaz.com
Sarah and I have a “Glam Language.” When we first started shooting together over 10 years ago, we developed our language and it went like this: “Should we start at a 5?” “Ok, now let’s do a 9.5.” I glam on a scale from 1-10 going from a natural look to mega-watt epic (smoky eyes, big hair, big lashes etc). Over the years, we’ve started cutting out the “natural looks” and now START at a 10 because we’re going for IMPACT! And if Picturegroove is known for anything, its creating images with some serious IMPACT! As fun as it is to rock some mega-watt glam, in the real world, you’re probably wearing more of a natural look during the day. I’d like to show you how to take your look from day to PICTUREGROOVE GLAM! Your daytime face — I’m assuming you’ve got the usual on: light foundation, maybe some blush, mascara, etc. From here, the easiest way to amp up your eyes is to use cream eyeshadows. It may sound messy, but trust me, its the easiest way to get the most impact because the colors are usually so pigmented and intense. I recommend cream shadows in stick form because they’re also the easiest to maneuver. For the easiest smoky eye look use just two colors of cream eyeshadow: a light shimmer tone and a tone 3 to 4 shades darker. Start with your lighter eyeshadow and apply it to your lid. Since you’re using a cream, you can use your finger and gently buff it around the lid. Next, place the darker shadow at the outer corner of your eye and swipe it along the crease of your eye. Now run this same color along the entire lower lash line. If you have a synthetic eyeshadow blending brush, use this to blend out the shadow in the crease. To make it easy, place the brush in the crease and make halfmoon shapes moving the brush back and forth until the shadow looks soft and blended.
Tip: If you don’t have a synthetic brush you can use your ring finger to gently soften the edges of the shadow and blend.
Now using your finger, gently run it along your lower lashline to smudge out the shadow. Next, take a deep black eyeliner and line the upper and lower inner rim of your eyes. This will give you a SERIOUS pop to your eye color. Take that same liner and run it along your upper lashline, starting at the outer corner all the way to your inner corner. Don’t worry if it’s not a perfectly straight line, you can use your finger to smudge and soften the line (gives you more of a smoky effect). Next, curl your lashes and apply two thick coats of mascara. If you’re a lash master and can apply falsies this is the time to go for it! Tip: If you already have mascara on from the day, be very gentle when curling your lashes. Just give them a light squeeze. Now time to give your skin a glow! Use any liquid or power highlighter and run it along your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose and pop a bit on the center of your chin too. Tip: a highlighter will give your skin a luminous glow in person and will photograph beautifully. Touch up your cheeks with a pop of a pinky or peachy toned blush. Apply a bit of bronzer along your hairline and under your highlighter as well. This will give your face more dimension. Last, swipe on a nude gloss or lipstick (either with pink or peach undertones (try to coordinate this with your blush color). If you have pink blush, choose a pinky toned lip color). Voila! You just nailed the EASIEST way to get that megawatt PICTUREGROOVE GLAM! Let me know how you did! Did you nail it or still need help? I’d love to give you more tips or answer any of your questions. Message me on Instagram and be sure to include a picture of your Picturegroove Glam for a chance to be featured on mine and Bodyscape Magazine’s Instagram! Can’t wait to see your pics! @AllisonPynn

Three steps to weight loss that do not involve diet or exercise! Holly Barker
www.hollsbarksfitness.com I believe the journey to living your healthiest lifestyle and weight loss starts with three key factors: Hydration Sleep Stress Management Taking control of these factors will have you in the mood to conquer any goal with ample energy, a positive attitude and superhuman ambition. The weight loss you experience as a result is a bonus! Hydration: How does hydration help with weight loss? Increasing your hydration has so many benefits, its hard to think why anyone would forego the ability to drink water at every turn. I want to share a true story. This story is very bizarre to me as I’ve always chosen water over anything, being called the water girl by my mom growing up and staying true to my routines through today. I am grateful for this ingrained habit I have to drink clear, fresh, wonderful water first before anything. I digress; recently filling my fuel tank at a gas station along one of my adventures, I went into the convenience store to buy water! As I was in line next to pay, the lady in front of me was purchasing her 1-liter pop beverage and a 1-liter bottle of water. When the tally was given, her reaction to the expense was disturbed. I’m not sure if she was short of funds or if the amount just took her by surprise and put her in an off-put state of mind. She asked why the amount was so much and the clerk told her the price of both, the pop and the water, the water being more than twice as much as the pop. She decided to forego the water and proceed with the pop. The fact that she was given a choice between pop and water, she chose pop because it was less expensive. But it does not have the same effect as water. In fact, it does the EXACT opposite by contributing to dehydration, bloat and sugar overload.
This situation is more common than I would like to think. Starting our day with a glass of OJ, moving on to coffee, drinking a pop
beverage throughout the day and ending the day with a glass of wine are all very very, very detrimental to achieving general health and productivity, let alone wreaking havoc on your waistline and giving weight loss no chance at all. The symptoms of dehydration are: Fatigue, lack of energy, disturbing sleep patterns, food cravings, depressed mood, inability to manage stress, loss of memory, weakened immune system. Hydration has been proven to result in the following benefits: Clear skin Bright eyes (the whites actually are white!) Healthy hair Strong nails Better breath Better mood Better sleep Lower stress Craving control Increased energy Productivity When we are hydrated, we heal more quickly, we think better, and we metabolize more efficiently. I really cannot think of what proper hydration can’t do or help with living optimally? But, when bad habits supersede the good and the good habits seem so hard to create, we tend to forget implementation and unconsciously fall back into the way of life we are used to, which may be living a dehydrated lifestyle. Don’t fret! Here are a few easy tips on how you can win the day with hydration and increase your water intake: Keep a liter of water with you. Keep it close and use it often. Track your water intake. When we do not track how much we are drinking, its easy to fall short on how much we should be. By the time we remember we are thirsty, we are usually dehydrated.
127
Drink it first thing in the morning. Before reaching for any other beverage, drink a glass at minimum of water. This encourages a healthy bowel, metabolism and sets you up to drink more water throughout the day vs. starting your day with dehydration. Double up when drinking water robbers – coffee, tea, alcohol, pop, concentrated juice. Match a glass of anything non-hydrational with a glass of water. I’m not saying we cannot drink anything else, just be conscious of water robbers and know that its smart to make up for the effect they have on our hydration. Supplement suggestion: Pedialyte. This amplifies hydration to the max. Add amino acids to your water. A good amino acid complex helps increase oxygen, nutrients and blood flow to your muscle, resulting in increased exercise capacity, increased recovery, increase lean muscle generation. This all results in fat loss optimization. Sleep How does sleep help with weight loss? Throughout our day we spend every minute using up mental bandwidth, tearing muscle fibers, eating, drinking, talk, walking. We are in the hours of action when our eyes are open. We all wish upon the stars for more hours in the day, but in all realness, our goal should be to make the most of the hours we have. To make the most of our actionable hours, we must optimize the hours we rest. When we are at complete rest, we are able to repair our body and our mind. It is in the hours that we are at complete rest (REM and deep-sleep cycles) that we can optimize our lifestyle of action fully.
Aim for 8 hours of sleep per night. If you have a set time you must wake up each day, set yourself up to be asleep 8-9 hours before that set time. Wind down and get in the mood. Encourage relaxation 1-2 hours before sleep: take a bath, read fiction, watch a rerun, drink a warm glass of lemon/ginger water, turn off your electronics — anything that relaxes and does not stimulate your mind. Avoid coffee and alcohol before bed. Create a sleep-welcoming environment. Keep your room cool and free from any disturbing lights. Keep your sleep time and rise time the same as best you can throughout the week, not just on weekdays or working days. Staying up and out on the weekends will have a negative effect on your productivity throughout the entire week. Supplement suggestion: Chamomile tea or anything lavender, hot lemon with a tablespoon of coconut oil or mct oil. These all aid in signaling your mind and body to slow down. Slowing your digestive system. Calming your thoughts. And getting you prepared for dreamland. Stress Management:
All of us simply sleep; however, not all of us completely rest. When we enter the stage 3 and 4 deep-sleep cycle and REM sleep cycle, we are able to repair our muscle tissue, encourage new cell growth, increase lean mass, lower brain activity, reduce stress, release growth hormone allowing us to wake up feeling refreshed and energized instead of groggy, tired and overwhelmed before the day even starts. Increasing your energy, muscle repair and ability to take on the day optimistically ultimately encourages weight loss!!
How does managing your stress help with weight loss? Stress can manifest in so many ways for many different people. It can work silently, it can slowly build, it can affect and consume your entire life. Stress can lead to illness, inflammation in the body, disease and can be a major contributor to your inability to succeed in life. I cannot STRESS it enough that you must be in touch with you and the things that are in your control to be better. When you work towards betterment and pay attention to balance in your life, you will then have the ability to succeed in whatever goal you set or challenge you accept. There are many contributors to stress. The ability to recognize and manage these stresses is your key to success.
How to maximize sleep quality? Here are a few tips to encourage a rest-filled night of sleep.

Ekaterina Meishvili By Sarah Lyons BodyScape Magazine Publisher Back in 2015, I had the pleasure of shooting “Ekat” at Fitness Universe in Miami. Meeting Ekat was the highlight of my trip. I’d never worked with a real, bonafide trained gymnast before. Ekat’s moves blew me away when she was in front of my camera; it was like she was dancing in her posing, and I just followed. We met up again recently in Newport Beach at the official launch party for BodyScape Magazine. It had only been three years since we’d seen each other, but she is the kind of lady that when you reconnect with her, you feel like no time has passed at all, and you just pick up where you left off. She is one of the most graceful people I’ve ever worked with, and she has also proven to be one of the strongest people I have ever met before in my life mentally. She has moved through some real obstacles in her, and won’t let anything stand in her way, and for that reason, I chose her to be in our “Model Spotlight” feature for this issue of BodyScape Magazine.

Ekaterina Meishvili Where are you currently residing? Aliso Viejo, California What do you do for work? I help people to achieve their fitness goals and designing individual programs for each client How did it all start, and how did you get here? I always loved fitness, I was a rhythmic gymnast back home (Country of Georgia), I traveled a very long way to get where I am today, not the easy road, but discipline, dedication and hard work always pays off!
