Dear friends, It is with great pride that I share with you our 2016 Annual Report, my last as the Chairman of Birthright Israel Foundation’s Board of Directors. As I look back on my three years as Chair, I am truly amazed by how far we have come as an organization. When the year began, our board, energized by the celebration of Birthright Israel’s 15th year and the arrival of the 500,000th participant, set out on a course to truly engage our members in all aspects of the Birthright Israel Foundation. Our goal was to make the board an integral part of raising the necessary funds to ensure the gift of Birthright Israel remains available for generations to come. With new committees formed, contact lists ready to share and event dates saved on our calendars, we were ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work. With this energy, many members of our board traveled for our first Board of Directors meeting in Israel. Over the course of three days, we bonded as a group and connected to the Birthright Israel program on a deeper level, reminding us why we are all committed to this transformative program. Though our time was short and action packed, there are moments that I know will stay with us forever. In addition to our board retreat, Israel served as the backdrop for the Foundation's first Campaign Ambassadors Mission this summer. Several lay leaders from across the country traveled together to get an up close and personal look at the Birthright Israel program, meet with groups, explore the Innovation Center in Tel Aviv, and meet with members of the IDF. Our campaign ambassadors walked away with a better understanding of how to communicate with current and prospective donors in their communities to encourage their support of Birthright Israel and the Jewish future. As the summer came to a close, details fell into place for the Birthright Israel Foundation 2016 Gala that I was lucky enough to be honored at with the inaugural Founders Award. The Founders Award was created to honor the legacy of program founders Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt, with the Birthright Israel leaders of today and tomorrow, a group I am so privileged to be a part of. More than 400 supporters joined together at Cipriani 25 in New York City for an inspiring evening that included meaningful alumni testimonials reminding us why we all care so deeply about Birthright Israel. I was truly humbled by the experience of being honored and am so appreciative of the tremendous job the Gala Chairs, Laurie Blitzer & Sam Levine, Ulrika & Joel Citron and Nancy & Morris Offit and our Vice and Honorary Chairs did to make the evening as successful as it was. The Gala served as our best event to date, raising $3.2 million dollars – a night none of us will forget. 2016 was also a year marked by change as we prepared to usher in new leadership at Birthright Israel Foundation. After four years, David Fisher stepped down as President to begin a new chapter in his career. We are so grateful to David for the dedication, leadership, friendship, and passion he gave to Birthright Israel and to the staff at the Foundation. Thank you, David. Please join me in welcoming Israel (“Izzy”) Tapoohi, who has taken over the helm as President & CEO of Birthright Israel Foundation. Izzy comes to us after five years as President & CEO at Israel Bonds. We know he will lead Birthright Israel Foundation strongly into the next chapter. As I end my term as Chair, I am thrilled to pass the torch to Thomas D. Stern. As a member of our board since 2014, Tom has also served as a member of Birthright Israel Foundation’s Executive Committee and Finance Committee, as well as on the Planning Committee of Birthright Israel, which provides strategic guidance on all elements of the Birthright Israel program. Joining Tom as Vice Chairs are Stephen M. Siderow and Philip Rosen. I join the entire board when I say I am confident in the tremendous job you will do and look forward to all that is ahead. I would not have been able to serve as Chair without the partnership and friendship of my Vice Chair, Laurie Blitzer. Thank you for all that you are and all that you do. Dear friends, It is with great excitement that I write to you for the first time, as the new President & CEO of Birthright Israel Foundation. After completing my term as President & CEO at Israel Bonds, there is no better place for me to be, working at an organization that is fueled by the same passion I have for the state of Israel and the future of the Jewish people. As you know, there is no greater investment in our Jewish future than Birthright Israel. This program is truly transforming an entire generation, with more than 500,000 young Jewish adults connected to the state of Israel and finding their own place, on their own terms, in the Jewish community. Participants come home from Israel with a new understanding of who they are, where they came from and where they now fit in. They infuse our communities, our synagogues and our causes with passion, dedication and a fresh perspective on what it means to be Jewish. In the coming months I look forward to traveling across the country to get to know you and celebrate our mutual love for Birthright Israel. If we work together, we can send even more young Jewish adults on Birthright Israel each and every year. It is my goal to raise even greater funds to make this experience a reality for every eligible millennial that raises their hand and says “I want to go on Birthright Israel.” I believe, with your help, this is possible. If you care about the Jewish people, if you care about Israel, than Birthright Israel is an investment you must make. Please join me and become a stakeholder in the Jewish future. OUR MISSION Birthright Israel Foundation raises funds in the United States to support Birthright Israel, a program which currently provides 45,000 young Jewish adults annually the gift of a 10-day trip to Israel. It is our goal to ensure the gift of Birthright Israel continues to strengthen Jewish continuity and provide even more young Jewish adults with a connection to Israel for years to come.

When I first set foot in Israel, I knew it was going to be a life-changing trip. I was trying to find clues of who I was, trying to find answers to the many questions I had about my culture and myself. All those answers came, while my fellow travelers and I climbed mountains that seemed insurmountable, walked deserts and explored ancient and spiritual cities. I realized as time passed that our Birthright Israel trip was a metaphor of what we have had to endure since we became a people. The big difference is that this journey was meant to bring us closer together, closer to our religion and to show us that we do have a land we can stand on. Israel is a utopia that many generations of our Jewish ancestors never thought could become true. While I was there, I was aware of that, with my eyes, my heart and my mind.
My most cherished moment was at Independence Hall in Tel Aviv. A picture provoked it. In it you can see a group of Jewish men and women standing in a desert, surrounded by dunes. That was the first picture of Tel Aviv, nothing more than sand. Why this picture? It demonstrates the courage and the strength that our people have. We have endured more challenges than most groups in the world, and we are still alive and prosperous. We believe in the ability to make change happen, in places where it seems unimaginable. We transformed that arid land into a flourishing city. The United States is the third country I’ve lived in. It is the one of the few in the world where being Jewish is widely accepted. Knowing the privilege that we Jewish Americans have, I made it my task to try to help my companions understand the importance of having a Jewish state. We all came from different walks of life. Some had never left their small towns; others had traveled the world and lived in metropolises. This trip gave us food for our minds, a safety network, acceptance and knowledge. It also allowed us to create life-lasting bonds with our Israeli counterparts. I will forever be thankful for that. Birthright Israel is essential for future generations. It shows us young people that there is a place to go. It gave me a new sense of hope, knowing that I could make it my life goal to help people achieve peace and acceptance. When I first set foot in Israel I was a young man expecting an exciting and life-changing trip. When I left I felt like an adult who finally had a home.

A YEAR IN REVIEW As we ring in the new year of 2017 and enjoy the presence of thousands of our Birthright Israel participants in Israel this winter, we take a moment to reflect on 2016 – a year of innovation, advancement, challenges and achievements. 2016 followed a year of celebrations, where we had marked our 15th anniversary and the great milestone of reaching 500,000 participants. During the year, 44,862 young Jewish adults enjoyed their life changing trip (1,000 more than the total participants in 2015), and with their arrival, Birthright Israel took our first step towards the next half a million participants. With these milestones, we are continuously reminded of our overall mission, purpose and goals – delivering a unique and meaningful experience to each and every one of our participants, while ensuring their safety and security. This vision will continue to guide us and we will do our best to maintain Birthright Israel’s position as the largest, most successful educational organization in the Jewish world today.
To date, the Center has hosted over 20,000 Birthright Israel participants and dozens of delegations from Israel and around the globe. The Center encompasses an exhibit hall showcasing Israel’s cutting edge, innovative achievements and high-tech capabilities – an important part of modern Israel’s society, economy and culture – and a lecture hall, where entrepreneurs share their personal and professional stories. Additionally, this past summer we implemented the geopolitical module. Our cadre of speakers met with groups across the country to discuss domestic, regional and international affairs, all related to the Middle East and Israel in an unbiased, non-partisan manner. The aim is to present a more nuanced view of the relationship between different sectors within Israeli society including positive examples, which are rarely presented in foreign media.
PLANNING, STRATEGIZING AND IMPLEMENTING NEW PROGRAMS
The module aims to present 21st century Israel alongside the important messages and educational values of Israel’s and the Jewish people’s history and heritage. Within this module we placed three components in the spot light – Tel Aviv as a vibrant modern city, Israel’s hi-tech industry and geopolitics.
As an organization catering to the generation of the millennials, Birthright Israel must keep itself innovative, current and flexible, to bring tens of thousands of eligible young Jewish adults to Israel annually. Better yet, we must adjust our product – the life-changing trip to Israel – to the needs of today’s potential participants. We’ve done intensive R&D work and created special programs – each targeting a different audience. Highlights include:
Tel Aviv Week, a festival, which celebrates the modern city of Tel Aviv, is gradually becoming a summer season tradition. This past May over 5,000 North American participants took part in this second annual event and toured the city while experiencing its sites, nightlife, culture, cuisine, and more. Not even two weeks later, we held the grand opening of the first ever Birthright Israel Innovation Center in partnership with the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.
Birthright Israel Academic – This past summer we ran two 13-day trips that featured academic programming. For each trip, we partnered with an Israeli university. With the IDC, we ran a counterterrorism course, and with Ben Gurion University, an ecology and environment program. The participants had the opportunity, upon completion of relevant course work, to earn 3 academic credits. Our new project manager is currently outlining the summer 2017 Academic trips.
THE CONTEMPORARY ISRAEL MODULE
7-Day Trips – This winter we continue to test 7-day trips, which cater to those who have fewer days off from work or study to travel. The content of the program is carefully planned and more focused. IDF Officers’ Program – Following a request from the IDF, we will hold special trips for 120 IDF officers, who will be screened and chosen carefully. The officers will join older groups from the U.S. and undergo special programming about Israel-Diaspora relations, innovation, IDF values and more. The post-trip programming depends on the success of the program and future funding. Extensions – The program, funded by Maimonides Foundation, will offer short- term, in-depth experiences for participants wishing to extend their trip in Israel. We will provide them with a selection of options that will deepen their connection to Israel, Israelis and the Jewish people. The program will be piloted during summer 2017.
BUILDING LEADERS OF TOMORROWBIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL EXCEL The Birthright Israel Excel program builds, encourages and supports a strong community of Jewish, international business leaders in North America and Israel. This leadership program is funded by the Steinhardt, Schusterman and Singer Foundations. But, starting this comming summer, I am proud to share that the government of Israel has partnered with Birthright Israel on this program. In addition to the ongoing program, the Excel Ventures Program was launched this past summer. The program provided 20 outstanding Jewish Americans and Israelis with demonstrated entrepreneurial potential and leadership skills with an intensive summer experience in Tel Aviv, designed to empower the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs.
STAFF TRAINING - BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL FELLOWS Birthright Israel has been focusing its efforts on creating a joint language for its educational staff, thus creating clear articulate messages. This year, the Birthright Israel Fellows’ network grew larger, and following the 2016 winter and summer training seminars, is now comprised of over 500 fellows. The next training seminar will take place in March of 2017. LOOKING TOWARDS 2017 AND BEYOND The upcoming year of Birthright Israel will be one focused on growth and development. The focus is tailoring the Birthright Israel product to the needs and wants of the millennials to ensure relevancy and the participation of the tens of thousands who have yet to enjoy their gift of a trip to Israel. This will involve all aspects of the trip, with which the applicants and participants come in contact: our marketing, recruitment and the trips themselves will include modifications to reach out to as many participants possible. Our overarching goal for the year to come is to set the stage for future participant growth ensuring our leading role in building a more involved generation of young Jews by increasing our relevance and accessibility to the largest number of potential participants.

The business and personal connections formed throughout the summers and during the year in the Excel network are irreplaceable. Today we have over 500 members in this community and we expect over 100 to join in summer 2017. 16
The Mifgash FACTOR Mifgash, or “encounter” in Hebrew, is used to describe one of the most meaningful aspects of the Birthright Israel trip, the time when young Israelis, many of whom are active IDF soldiers, join Birthright Israel groups for a portion of the 10-day experience. The Mifgash gives participants an intimate look into the lives of Israelis, opening their eyes to a heightened understanding of Israeli military service, society, politics, culture, and family life from the perspective of their Israeli peers.

Though the focus of Birthright Israel is often on the Diaspora participants, the impact on young Israelis is equally profound. While many Israelis initially join the program thinking they will help participants better understand Israel and the IDF, they walk away having discovered their own identities and a newfound pride in their IDF service, their country, and their Jewish heritage. Before I went on Birthright Israel, my friends told me that it was going to be one of the most influential experiences. They said I was going to make friends for life, learn about other cultures and my Jewish identity, and have an amazing time. But all I could think was – how am I going to do all of that in 10 days? I thought I knew Israel, I knew that I’m Jewish, and I have my Jewish identity. I really thought Birthright Israel was for Americans. I never thought that it would affect me so deeply.
But Birthright Israel has affected my Jewish identity, and how I see myself as an Israeli. For me, I saw Israel in a different light and I can honestly say that Birthright Israel made my Jewish identity stronger. The thing that surprised me most on Birthright Israel was that it was the first time I understood a lot of Jews in America don’t experience Israel like I do – their view of Israel is what they see on the news. The majority of my friends on the trip shared with me that they didn’t understand a lot of things about Israel before the trip and I think this is the purpose of Birthright Israel for young Jewish adults to see Israel through their own eyes. Birthright Israel allows them to experience the country, travel, laugh, cry, and mostly, love Israel.
And for Israelis, Birthright Israel truly gives us an opportunity to see how much we do for our country. It is the best present for a young soldier, to really understand how we are defending our country.

Funding Opportunities: Gift It Your Way Birthright Israel Foundation provides the following designated funding opportunities for donors to connect with our work on a more personal level. Supporters are invited to designate gifts to the annual campaign in increments of $60,000 or consider a Planned Gift through Foundation Futures for these projects.
Accessibility/Special Needs Trips It is our belief that all eligible young adults should be able to visit Israel to experience their birthright and we are pleased to offer approximately ten Accessibility/Special Needs trips annually for participants with a variety of developmental and physical disabilities.
Birthright Israel Academic Birthright Israel Academic is a new 13-day trip model, leveraging the impact of a traditional Birthright Israel trip with three academic credits from an Israeli university.
BICEP Focused on enriching trip preparation, enhancing the participant experience in Israel, and facilitating post-trip engagement, the Birthright Israel Collaborative Enhancement Project (BICEP), offers its college-based participants deep and lasting connections with Israel.
Birthright Israel Fellows Birthright Israel Fellows is an intensive educational training program for select cohorts of North American Madrichim (trip leaders).
Birthright Israel Institute for Tour Educators The Institute for Tour Educators is the intensive professional development platform for Birthright Israel tour educators (guides).
Geopolitics Module Birthright Israel has created an enriched module that aims to standardize and contextualize our educational approach to Geopolitics, including a two-hour presentation by an expert offering context and content, complemented by a two-hour experiential engagement session.
GLobal participants Birthright Israel is committed to providing the gift to young Jews from around the world, such as from Brazil, France, and the Ukraine, to empower these young adults to forge personal relationships with Israel, the Jewish people, and their own Jewish identity.
Mifgash (Encounter) The Mifgash is a unique element of the Birthright Israel experience in which Diaspora and Israeli participants spend quality time together as peers.
Max Steinberg (z�l) Memorial Fund We seek to raise funds to honor and celebrate the legacy of Max Steinberg (z�l) Birthright Israel alumnus, IDF soldier, and Mifgash participant who died during Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014.

Events and Celebrations Birthright Israel Foundation supporters came together in their communities around the country this year for more than 35 events that raised over $8 million towards our annual campaign. Here is an inside look into some of our 2016 events!
March We kicked off our 2016 event season in Palm Beach, Florida. Hosted by Sydell Miller, Palm Beach County supporters joined with Canadian snowbirds at La Reverie for an evening to support Birthright Israel Foundation and Birthright Israel Foundation of Canada. Guests had the pleasure of hearing from Birthright Israel co-founder, Charles Bronfman; Birthright Israel tour educator, Rachel Smith-Savaya; and Birthright Israel Accessibility/Special Needs trip alumnus, Josh Tober.
april We hosted our second Birthright Israel Forum immediately following the JFN International Conference in La Jolla, California. The forum was open to foundation professionals from our current institutional donors and other professionals who were interested in learning more about the Birthright Israel program from a more intimate perspective. We were excited to have Birthright Israel leadership including International CEO, Gidi Mark; International VP of Education, Dr. Zohar Raviv; and Executive Director, Liz Sokolsky join us.

We came together in Austin at the home of Valerie and Jeffrey Newberg. The evening opened with a dedication for Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, as host, Valerie, shared her personal story and lit a memorial candle. Adam Stewart, Director of Education and Strategy at The iCenter, shared his insights on Birthright Israel’s educational platform and approach, how to engage young adults on the trip, and the success of Birthright Israel.
june We kicked off the summer in New York City as Shari and Ofer Yardeni hosted The Evolution of Birthright Israel at The Ritz Plaza. The program included remarks by Shimon Shkury, a history of Birthright Israel by Jeff Solomon and a firsthand look into the Birthright Israel experience from tour educator, Rachel Smith-Savaya and Mifgash alumna, Tom Shaked. Guests gathered at beautiful Bedford home of hosts, Jackie and Barry Gosin, as Mifgash alumna, Tom Shaked, and two Birthright Israel alumni shared their stories. We were also lucky to hear from Foundation board member Stephen M. Siderow about why supporting Birthright Israel Foundation is important to him and his family. Over 100 young leaders and Birthright Israel alumni came together at the home of hosts, Lauren and Ari Ackerman, for The Magic of Birthright Israel, our annual Young Leadership event. Guests enjoyed a gorgeous view of New York City, as well as a performance from a beatboxer and Birthright Israel alumni speakers. We were honored to have board member Stephen M. Siderow in attendance who was so inspired by our young leadership that he generously matched gifts made that evening. Members our board, joined by family members and leadership from Birthright Israel Foundation, came together in Israel for our inaugural Board of Directors retreat. Highlights included a tour of the Innovation Center in Tel Aviv, dinner with Birthright Israel leadership, and a meeting with Director-General, Eli Groner; Foreign Media Advisor and Spokesman, David Keyes; and Senior Advisor, Dr. Jonathan Schachter. Our time in Israel was an incredible way to see the impact of Birthright Israel firsthand and reinforce our board’s commitment to our mission. 22

Local supporters gathered for an intimate dinner at the Standard Club in Chicago. The evening was co-hosted by Birthright Israel co-founder, Charles Bronfman, and Lester and Renèe Crown. Guests heard firsthand from Charles Bronfman about the history of Birthright Israel as well as the personal experience of Mifgash alumna, Tom Shaked. Nancy and Mitch Steir hosted our annual Hamptons event at their home in Watermill, New York. About 100 guests gathered for a wonderful evening in support of Birthright Israel Foundation, including members of our New York City Leadership Council and board members Susie Gelman, Wendy Shenfeld, Doug Ross, Atlanta Leadership Council Chair, and Josh Nash, Board Chair.
september Birthright Israel Foundation headed to the West Coast as Arline and Buddy Pepp hosted the annual Los Angeles event at the Petersen Automotive Museum. In partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, the evening honored one of the original Birthright Israel funders, Gary Winnick. We were lucky to be joined by board member Shawn Evenhaim. A select group of guests were invited on a private tour of the museum’s vault. Our Boston community came together in September for a dinner at Belmont Country Club. The evening focused around the theme Birthright Israel Changed My Life. Supporters in attendance heard from Barry Shrage, President of CJP, as well as two local Birthright Israel alumni, one of whom is a former IDF paratrooper.

We came together at the home of hosts, Tara and Morgan Rutman, for a Birthright Israel Foundation gathering in the Chappaqua community. Donors and prospects listened to remarks from Rabbi Isabel de Konick on the impact the trip has on millennials. Our guests also heard from a local alumnus, Mifgash alumna, Tom Shaked, and board member, Stephen M. Siderow, who grew up in the community. Tristate area supporters gathered at Centerview Partners in New York City for a breakfast hosted by Alan Hartman. The breakfast included a briefing with Neil Lazarus, acclaimed speaker and Middle East expert who speaks to many Birthright Israel groups. Mr. Lazarus provided an update and dynamic conversation on how Birthright Israel presents the nuance and complexities facing modern Israel.
november This year, Roselyne Swig and her grandson, Adam, hosted our annual San Francisco event, Inspired Jewish Journeys, in the penthouse of the Fairmont Hotel. The evening focused on the importance of Birthright Israel including alumni stories and a toast from our partners at the Jewish Federation of the East Bay. Atlanta area donors came together this year at the home of Aviva and Eyal Postelnik for an evening to benefit Birthright Israel Foundation. The program included a welcome from Doug Ross, Atlanta Leadership Council Chair and board member, a video greeting from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and a keynote address by Ambassador Dennis Ross. We were honored to have Ambassador Judith Varnai Shorer, Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern United States, in attendance. 24
december We hosted in partnership with Seed the Dream Foundation our second BICEP Convening. Representatives from over 30 universities and organizations came together in Orlando, Florida for two days to exchange ideas, thoughts and review concepts for the future of BICEP. Seed the Dream Founders Marcy Gringlas and Joel Greenberg joined us at the convening and shared their passion for BICEP and the Jewish future. We came together for our Annual Giving Circles Event in Philadelphia at the beautiful home of hosts, Kristin and Michael Karp. Supporters heard from a local Birthright Israel alumna and a Mifgash alumnus as well as Dr. John Ruskay, Commissioner, United States Commission on International Religious Freedom and Executive Vice President Emeritus, UJA Federation of New York.
Members of the Boca Raton community gathered for a beautiful evening in support Birthright Israel Foundation at the home of hosts, Andrea and Mike Leven, board member. Program highlights included an overview of Birthright Israel by Mike Leven as well as three Birthright Israel alumni stories, and a few words from Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County President and CEO, Matt Levin. On Wednesday, November 16th, over 400 people gathered at Cipriani 25 in New York City for our 2016 Gala. The evening celebrated the work of Birthright Israel Foundation and honored Board of Directors outgoing Chair, Joshua Nash, with the inaugural Founders Award. Our 2016 Gala was a night to remember, raising over $3.2 million – a huge tribute to Josh’s leadership over the past three years. Guests in attendance heard remarks from former Foundation board chair, Daniel S. Och, and program co-founders, Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt, as well as four inspiring Birthright Israel alumni stories about the impact the program has had on the individuals, their families and the larger Jewish community. The evening was chaired by Laurie Blitzer & Sam Levine, Ulrika & Joel Citron, and Nancy & Morris W. Offit.
The founders of Birthright Israel exemplify dedication to strengthening Jewish identity, building lasting bonds with the land and people of Israel, and reinforcing the solidarity of the Jewish people worldwide. We are confident that recipients of this award will carry the torch that all of our founders lit, initially inspired by Charles R. Bronfman and Michael H. Steinhardt.

Our founders created Birthright Israel in 1999 with the goal of sending every young Jewish person on a life-changing journey that would strengthen their bond with Israel and the Jewish community. While we have achieved great success to date, there is much work to be done to reach this monumental goal and ensure Birthright Israel is available for generations to come. Birthright Israel currently sends 45,000+ participants to Israel each year, but that is just a tiny fraction of the estimated 1.6 million Jewish children under the age of 18 who will soon age into the Birthright Israel cohort.
