DEAR FRIENDS, 2015 was a year marked by milestones as we celebrated the 15th anniversary of Birthright Israel and the 500,000th participant’s arrival in Israel. As you continue to read this Annual Report you will hear more about these extraordinary moments, of which we are extremely proud. When I look back on 2015, I cannot help but be gratified and inspired by our accomplishments as an organization and the goals we have set for the coming year. First and foremost, I am grateful for the support and friendship of Laurie Blitzer, our Vice Chair. Her leadership and passion for Birthright Israel is immeasurable and she continues to be an incredible partner as we work towards this important mission. Birthright Israel Foundation’s Board of Directors is comprised of passionate thinkers, doers and leaders, a group that is deeply dedicated to providing the gift of Birthright Israel. As we step into the next 15 years, it is our responsibility to carry the torch that was lit by our co-founders, Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt, by making sure we build the next generation of leaders so this incredible gift can continue to change our collective Jewish future. This year, we have continued towards our goal of recruiting talented and dedicated individuals to join our board and welcomed eight new members, broadening our geographic representation and level of diversity and experience. Our leadership has proven their dedication to Birthright Israel Foundation beyond their financial support by lending their time to host events in their local communities and at their homes as well as host and travel with us to Israel on our Benefactors Mission this past January. Additionally, our Development Committee has dedicated their time and resources to open up their contact lists and phone lines to help secure and close gifts for our annual campaign proving there is no job too big or too small for them in support of Birthright Israel. As we close the year I am looking forward to all we will accomplish together in 2016 and am most excited about our first Board of Directors retreat in Israel in the summer. Together we will enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of Israel along with our colleagues at the Foundation and the young Jewish adults participating on Birthright Israel trips. There is no greater motivation to succeed than seeing this transformative experience in person and there is no greater gift we can give to our children. Thank you for your continued support. PRESIDENT DEAR FRIENDS, It is with great excitement I share with you our 2015 Annual Report, as it marks the end of a successful and historic year for our program.
BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL CELEBRATES 15 YEARS In 2015, we celebrated Birthright Israel’s 15th year, looking back in awe at the program’s simple beginnings and how what some once called Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt’s “crazy idea” has become the most crucial identity building program of our time. When we spoke with the original founders and donors for our fifth issue of Journeys Magazine, one sentiment reverberated across the board. No matter how these individuals became involved in Birthright Israel, they all believed that the biggest success of the last 15 years is that the program never stopped improving. Though its basic structure remains the same as it did in its infancy, Birthright Israel is constantly challenging itself to make participants’ journey even more impactful. This momentous year also brought the 500,000th global participant to Israel, which was celebrated this past summer in Tel Aviv. When Birthright Israel launched in the winter of 2000, no one could have anticipated that in 2015, more than half a million young Jewish adults from 66 countries around the world would call themselves Birthright Israel alumni. Today, these alumni have gone on to become leaders in our Jewish communities and supporters of Birthright Israel Foundation, giving the gift of a lifetime to the next generation of emerging Jewish adults. In fact, today over one-third of our colleagues at Birthright Israel Foundation have participated in a Birthright Israel trip and have come full circle to pay it forward.
THE BEST PLACE TO WORK As our colleagues in Israel strive to better the Birthright Israel program each day, the Foundation staff works towards another goal – being the best place to work, not only in the Jewish non-profit sector, but in the country. In April, The Non-Profit Times named Birthright Israel Foundation number 39 among the best non-profit organizations to work for. Though honored to be on this list, we continue to strive to improve the culture, professional development, and working environment we provide for our employees. One of the changes we made in 2015 was the creation of a Director of Talent Development position. This role is dedicated to finding innovative and engaging ways to elevate the quality of our professional lives.
In another effort to make Birthright Israel Foundation the best place to work, our team came together to articulate Core Values for our organization. After many discussions, we came to the consensus that our work is driven by passion, respect and pursuit of excellence. We are proud to have an ever-growing and dedicated team that is deeply committed to our mission.
NEW ENDEAVORS It has been a busy and exciting year for us as 2015 brought many important changes to our work on the digital front. The first change came as we focused our attention on investing in the professionalization of our technology by switching our entire donor and fundraising database over to Salesforce. As the number one Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform, Salesforce enables our team to easily monitor donor relationships and fundraising efforts in order to work towards our campaign goal in a more efficient manner. In July, we took on the important work of post-trip alumni engagement following the cessation of NEXT: A Division of Birthright Israel Foundation. In order to build on NEXT’s success in empowering Birthright Israel alumni to increase their involvement in Jewish life, Birthright Israel Foundation is in the process of creating a “digital bridge” to connect alumni to one another and to the many opportunities offered within the Jewish community. It is our goal to meet Birthright Israel alumni in a space they are comfortable in while informing them of meaningful opportunities to engage with the Jewish community after they return from their trips. Finally, this fall we launched Birthright Israel Foundation Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as a newly designed website. As we work on increasing our social media presence, our goal is to build strong awareness about Birthright Israel Foundation and continue to grow our donor base by reaching potential supporters in ways we previously have not. With a responsive design, our website now enables supporters to engage with our work in an interactive way and learn more about our fundraising efforts, giving opportunities, and donors as well as the Birthright Israel program. Birthright Israel began with a bold idea—offer a free, life-changing, 10-day trip to Israel for young Jewish adults between the ages of 18 and 26—and in doing so, transform the Jewish future. Founded in 1999 by a remarkable group of committed Jewish philanthropists led by Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt, Birthright Israel aims to strengthen Jewish identity, build a lasting bond with the land and people of Israel, and reinforce the solidarity of Jewish people worldwide.
OUR MISSION
Birthright Israel Foundation raises the necessary funds each year to support Birthright Israel. Through partnerships with the Government of Israel, the Jewish Federations of North America, the Jewish Agency for Israel and Keren Hayesod as well as the over 25,000 Birthright Israel Foundation donors each year, we work to ensure that Birthright Israel remains a gift to young Jewish adults for years to come.

THE EXPECTATION 10 DAYS. 40 NEW FRIENDS. A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. With my suitcase and ticket in hand, I am on my way to the airport. It is hard to believe I am about to travel half way around the world with 40 strangers. For 10 days, we will be roommates and bus mates. In 10 days, we will become friends as we explore a land rich with history, culture and tradition. I have heard countless times that this trip is life-changing and I am ready to find out what that means for myself. Today, I am going to Israel. Today, I am claiming my birthright.

When I got to the airport bright and early on that July 5th morning I recall feeling like I was a freshman in college again, meeting a whole new group of people who were just as willing as I was to make new friends. We huddled together in a circle on the airport floor exchanging names, ages, hometowns, and where we went to school. It was almost immediate, and slightly strange, that I began to feel a very strong bond with this group of people that I had just met.
We had all grown up in very different places, and had various life experiences, but one thing united us all and that was our tie to Judaism. While some of us were more religious, or observant, or spiritual than others, we all had a connection to the Jewish faith in one way or another, and it was a connection that was strong enough to bring us all to this spot on the airport floor, at that moment, together. I will always cherish my first few days in Israel. They were filled with the budding of long lasting friendships, hikes to the top of beautiful waterfalls, and incredible scenic beauty. We swam in the Dead Sea covered in exfoliating mud, stood at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, toured the Holocaust Museum, and hiked to the top of Masada. At Mount Herzl, we listened to stories of those who fought in past wars and felt inspired by this beautiful country that, to us, seemed untouchable. I will never forget rafting down the Jordan River, the entirety of Bus 754, in 6 different rafts, held together solely by our hands. We were like one long snake of rafts drifting down the river. It was clear at that moment that this group would remain in each other’s lives well after the trip was complete. Our adventures in Israel will be remembered by the countless photos that decorate my NYC apartment, the Hebrew nameplate necklaces we all wear around our necks, and the memories of the unbreakable friendship that we all continue to share.

A YEAR AS WE WELCOME OUR WINTER 2016 PARTICIPANTS, WE REFLECT ON 2015’S OPERATIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS.
2015 was a year of well-deserved celebrations, especially as it followed a very challenging summer season in 2014. This past year marked Birthright Israel’s 15th anniversary and our record-breaking achievement of reaching 500,000 participants from 66 countries. As we conclude the year’s operations, we are proud to say that we have remained focused on our purpose, delivering a unique and meaningful experience to each one of our half a million participants. Birthright Israel is arguably the largest, most successful educational organization today. We know, however, that we cannot take time and rest on our laurels. During this past year we continuously challenged ourselves to improve and solidify existing and new innovative means, methods and ideas for achieving our mission and reaching our vision. This process included training the second and third cohorts of Birthright Israel Fellows; enhancing our marketing and recruiting capabilities across North America; dramatically increasing the Birthright Israel gift in France, where in these dire times our solidarity is needed in particular, as well as enhancing our efforts in
designated markets such as the FSU and Latin America. We worked hard to strengthen our participants’ exposure to contemporary Israel by developing new educational modules for geopolitics and innovation. Lastly, we are re-evaluating our lodging facilities and of course, constantly updating our security and safety regulations. Here are just a few highlights from the past year: SUMMER 2015 – ACHIEVEMENTS AND CELEBRATIONS What better way to celebrate reaching a half a million Birthright Israel participants this past summer than with operating our largest season ever. We added to this past summer several key events and projects to share with as many participants as possible our sense of accomplishment with reaching this monumental step in Birthright Israel’s journey. We held 10 Birthright Israel Villages in which nearly 5,000 young participants from various countries experienced the desert through unique workshops and personal interactions. This activity allowed our participants to intimately understand the importance of the desert in our history. We developed Tel Aviv Day to host thousands of our participants from the United States in the first Hebrew city, Tel Aviv, celebrating this vibrant, modern city, and highlighting Israel’s accomplishments in technology, fine art, dance and theater. Finally, we celebrated the long-lasting alliance
IN REVIEW between Birthright Israel and the IDF at our International Mega Event in Caesarea with participants and donors from twelve countries. Each of these unique celebrations afforded our participants the opportunity to see themselves as part of the dynamic landscape of Israel and Jewish people. TRAINING AND NETWORKS The Birthright Israel Fellows network grew this year by nearly 200%, and to date, there are nearly 300 trained Birthright Israel Fellows. The Fellows are a select group of Birthright Israel staff members from across the United States who receive special training and actively lead Birthright Israel groups in partnership with the Israeli Tour Educators in order to ensure a highly professional and well-aligned leadership team for each group while in Israel. The Birthright Excel network has grown as well, and to date we have 350 young members from the United States, Canada and Israel, alongside dozens of mentors in Israel and North America. Our goal is for the Excel community to lead an international network of Jewish professionals who will keep Israel within the scope of their careers and long-term investments and joint ventures in the future. Young professionals from around the U.S. are welcome to join many business initiatives created by the Excel members.
Finally, we have gathered a group of highly-motivated, Israeli Mifgash alumni in order to establish a platform of engagement with the thousands of Israeli Birthright Israel past participants. We are creating a local network to help promote Birthright Israel within Israel and around the world. LOOKING TOWARD 2O16... The upcoming year for Birthright Israel will be one focused on growth and development – our goals include growing the overall number of participants, with a special focus on increasing the number participants from U.S. college campuses and from France. Furthermore, we aim to continue the development of our educational modules – including both hi-tech & innovation and geopolitics. Our overarching goal is to bring 45,500 participants from around the world to Israel to experience the adventure of Birthright Israel together with 9,000 Israeli Mifgash participants. With these 2016 participants, we will begin our countdown towards the next half a million Birthright Israel participants.

THE MIFGASH FACTOR Mifgash, or “encounter” in Hebrew, is used to describe one of the most meaningful aspects of the Birthright Israel trip, the time when young Israelis, many of whom are active IDF soldiers, join Birthright Israel groups for a portion of the 10-day experience. The Mifgash gives participants an intimate look into the lives of Israelis, opening their eyes to a heightened understanding of Israeli military service, society, politics, culture, and family life from the perspective of their Israeli peers. Though the focus of Birthright Israel is often on the Diaspora participants, the impact on young Israelis is equally profound. While many Israelis initially join the program thinking they will help participants better understand Israel and the IDF, they walk away having discovered their own identities and a newfound pride in their IDF service, their country, and their Jewish heritage. Their experience has not only had a transformative effect on nextgeneration Israel, but Jewish communities and the larger Jewish world alike.

In 2004, while serving as a Submarine Officer in the IDF Navy, my captain offered me what he referred to as a ‘one week vacation from the Navy.’ I, of course, immediately accepted, without knowing that this ‘vacation’ would end up being a life-changing experience that continues to impact me today. This ‘vacation’ was Birthright Israel.
Over the course of a week, I traveled with a few of my fellow soldiers and a group of 40 young American Jews all over Israel. We walked the streets of the Old City of Jerusalem, explored the Negev, and experienced Tel Aviv. We shared childhood stories, ideas, and hopes. But more then everything, we connected. In Hebrew, Mifgash means encounter, and this truly was an eye-opening and meaningful encounter as we experienced Israel together, they for the first time, and us, for the first time through their eyes. That week had a tremendous impact on me. It made me feel a new type of pride in serving as an officer in the IDF. A pride that continued to motivate me as I became a Submarine Deputy Commander, leading a team of my own and carrying out missions that held the highest significance for the Jewish people and the state of Israel. It also gave me the opportunity to take a step back and focus on the journey we all take as Jewish people, realizing the importance of the connection between Jews in Israel and the Diaspora, and just how much we need each other. Birthright Israel was the trigger that started it all: hundreds of joint-ventures, thousands of new relationships, and an endless number of people who were positively affected by this journey.

MIFGASH (ENCOUNTER)
Israeli participants join their Diaspora peers for a portion of the 10-day journey. The Mifgash creates a unique, tangible bond between young Israelis and Jews from abroad and strengthens both their bond to Israel and the Jewish people.
BICEP The Birthright Israel Collaborative Enhancement Project is a comprehensive approach to Birthright Israel, designed to provide additional Israel education and engagement resources to its campus partners before, during, and after the 10-day experience.
MAX STEINBERG ( Z”I ) MEMORIAL FUND
This year, Birthright Israel Foundation established the Max Steinberg Memorial Fund to honor and celebrate the legacy of Max Steinberg z”l, a Birthright Israel alumnus, IDF soldier, and Mifgash participant who died during Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014.

A tlanta,Georgia Birthright Israel hit the road this year to celebrate the program’s 15th year in Atlanta, Georgia. Our 4th Annual National Gathering, chaired by Robyn & Doug Ross, Kim & Marc Schwartz and Wendy & Steve Shenfeld, gave donors the unique opportunity to convene, engage, and learn from fellow supporters and Birthright Israel and Foundation leadership. The weekend focused on bringing Birthright Israel to life in the eyes of our donors to ensure their commitment to the next generation of young Jewish adults. The event kicked off on Saturday evening, November 14th, with a private performance from Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and social activist, Michael Bolton, at the home of Aviva & Eyal Postelnik, Atlanta Leadership Council members.
Highlights from the conference included a keynote address and private meet and greet from Ambassador Ron Dermer, an inside look into Birthright Israel’s new strategy for posttrip engagement and marketing, and a private reception at the Georgia Aquarium. Our 4th Annual National Gathering concluded on Monday, November 16th, as over 400 Birthright Israel Foundation supporters came together at The St. Regis Atlanta. The evening included remarks from Mike Leven, Birthright Israel Foundation Board Member and CEO of Georgia Aquarium; Bernie Marcus, Co-Founder of Home Depot and Chairman of The Marcus Foundation; and Charles Bronfman, Co-Founder of Birthright Israel.

EVENTS + CELEBRATIONS BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL FOUNDATION IN FLORIDA On March 19, Birthright Israel Foundation supporters enjoyed a special reception in Boca Raton at the home of Andrea & Mike Leven, member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. CALIFORNIA HERE WE COME Over 100 members of the Palm Springs community came together on March 31 at the home of hosts Sandy & Bob Borns for an evening co-hosted by Foundation Board of Directors member, Jane Sherman, and her husband, Larry. Guests had the privilege of hearing from Rachel Cohen Gerrol who participated in Birthright Israel during the program’s flagship season and joined Birthright Israel Foundation’s Board of Directors this year. Over 200 guests from the Los Angeles community joined Birthright Israel Foundation at the home of hosts Gila & Adam Milstein in May for a special evening of support and celebration. In May, Birthright Israel Foundation held its Annual Giving Circles Event at the Museum of Tolerance in New York City. The evening featured a panel focused on the collaboration between Hillel and Birthright Israel moderated by Foundation President, David Fisher, with Birthright Israel International VP of Education, Dr. Zohar Raviv, and President and CEO of Hillel, Eric Fingerhut.

TASTE OF ISRAEL Birthright Israel Foundation kicked off the summer with a ‘Taste of Israel’ for young leadership at Sony Wonder Lab. 100 young leaders came together to hear Remy Roizen Weinstein and Rachel Cohen Gerrol, both Birthright Israel alumni and current Birthright Israel Foundation Board of Directors members, share their stories.

NEW YORK CELEBRATES BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL On September 9, Birthright Israel Foundation supporters gathered at the home of Marci & Jeremy Cohen in Scarsdale to celebrate Birthright Israel’s 15th year with program Co-Founder, Charles Bronfman. An intimate group of guests, many of whom are parents of Birthright Israel alumni, gathered at the Westchester home of Beth & Alan Waldenberg in September. COCKTAILS WITH FRANK LUNTZ On November 4, Birthright Israel Foundation gathered in Los Angeles for cocktails at the historic home of Frank Luntz, a renowned political advisor, pollster and strategist for Fortune 100 CEOs. Luntz’s home has been nicknamed “the Smithsonian West” by Los Angeles magazine, featuring rare historic documents and memorabilia, including letters from Oliver Cromwell, Napoleon Bonaparte, Albert Einstein (on the founding of Israel) and Abraham Lincoln.

A CELEBRATION IN MIAMI In November, over 70 Birthright Israel Foundation supporters joined us in Miami at the home of hosts Sharon & Howard Socol. Guests listened to passionate speakers Dr. Zohar Raviv, Birthright Israel International VP of Education and Holly & Chad Sokoloff, who met on Birthright Israel during the program’s first year in operation. This was the first event in Miami in over three years and focused on spearheading strong financial support for Birthright Israel Foundation in the area. WHY WE GIVE Bay Area supporters came together on November 19 at the San Francisco Fairmont Penthouse overlooking the city lights to hear moving toasts from six Birthright Israel alumni, as well as Consul General of Israel, Andy David. This event, hosted by Nancy & Stephen Grand and Ben Abram, was the first of its kind for Birthright Israel Foundation in the Bay Area and exceeded expectations in increasing our presence in the Bay Area community. We heard from Dr. Mitchell G. Bard, Executive Director of the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise (AICE), who is a foreign policy analyst and leading authority on the US and Middle East policy. We were also honored to hear from an outstanding local alumna who traveled this summer on an accessibility/special needs trip.

GIVING TUESDAY This year, Birthright Israel Foundation participated in Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to giving, for the second time. Created by the 92nd Street Y, Giving Tuesday connects diverse individuals and organizations around the world behind a common purpose: to celebrate the spirit of generosity and encourage giving. Now in its fourth year, Giving Tuesday has over 30,000 partners in 68 countries. This year, we focused a large part of our Giving Tuesday efforts on social media and engaging Birthright Israel alumni to pay it forward.
