Dear Friends, It has been just one year since I was elected Chair of Birthright Israel Foundation and I must say that I am especially grateful to my predecessor, Dan Och, who worked so diligently to build the Foundation into the strong, focused and inspiring organization it is today. I am also grateful for the enormous contribution my Vice Chair, Laurie Blitzer, has made in this first year. She has been a true partner and has always been at the ready to take on any task, to help our staff deliver on every commitment, and most of all, to offer me her wise counsel. We have worked hard to build on our success by recruiting new members to our board â€” a goal we set early on. Already, six new talented and unique individuals have joined us, providing greater geographic representation across the US and a rich diversity of background and experience.

Our board is dedicated to assisting the Birthright Israel Foundation staff in reaching our campaign goals with both new and existing supporters. Our Development Committee is working hard to plan events, fundraise, speak to parents of alumni, and find meaningful ways to engage with each community. FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, We are pleased to share with you our 2014 Birthright Israel Foundation Annual Report. It has been both a rewarding and challenging year for us as you will learn as you read through these pages. NEW BEGINNINGS 2014 began with newly elected board Chair, Joshua Nash, taking the reins most ably from Dan Och, our longstanding and dedicated leader who stepped down at the close of 2013. In March, we celebrated Dan’s incredible leadership and commitment to our mission by honoring him at our Birthright Israel Foundation Gala, which you will read more about later. Since his appointment, Josh has immediately demonstrated his considerable leadership and insight. Together with Laurie Blitzer, our board Vice Chair, and a most-dedicated board, Josh has moved quickly to build on Dan’s enormous contributions and the solid foundation he put in place. Josh and Laurie’s first year in office attests to the truth of the old adage, “Two heads are better than one.” ENGAGING OUR SUPPORTERS In January, we launched our Benefactors Circle, an affinity group for donors who make a significant annual contribution to the Foundation, with a special mission to Israel. Thanks to Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson who generously provided use of their private plane, attendees had the opportunity to travel to Israel to interact with trip participants and witness the power of the Taglit-Birthright Israel experience for themselves. The group also met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Judy and Michael Steinhardt, and Lynn Schusterman, and celebrated Taglit-Birthright Israel at the Mega Event, an international celebration, in Jerusalem. To strengthen our relationship with Jewish institutions, a key strategy in the 2014 campagin, the Birthright Israel Foundation held a special gathering following the Jewish Funders Network’s annual conference in March. During our time in Miami, our focus was to engage supporters on topics central to the Taglit-Birthright Israel program, the Foundation’s relationship with supporters, and the importance of our shared Jewish future. We look forward to continuing our work with these and many other important partners in 2015. In addition to the Benefactors Circle previously mentioned, we launched a full program of Annual Giving Circles groups to recognize the generosity and commitment of supporters at every giving level. With special opportunities to engage with Birthright Israel leadership and participants through events and customized communication pieces, we brought our supporters closer to the Taglit-Birthright Israel experience, strengthening their connection to the program and building on their support of the Birthright Israel Foundation. Throughout the year we worked hard to expand our network of donors by providing informational and motivational programming aimed at inspiring support. Our friends and supporters came together at over 50 gatherings in communities across the country to learn more about the value of the Taglit-Birthright Israel experience and why supporting Birthright

Israel Foundation is the best investment one can make in our Jewish future. Following the success of our January mission, we brought a second group of supporters to Israel in June. In an effort to give our supporters a firsthand look at the magic of a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip, the “My Birthright Israel” mission toured the country in a fashion that mimicked the TaglitBirthright Israel experience while giving mission participants time with Taglit-Birthright Israel groups. This October brought close to 100 dedicated supporters together in Las Vegas for the 3rd Annual Birthright Israel Weekend chaired by Andrea and Mike Leven and Kim and Marc Schwartz. From the moment our supporters arrived, they were greeted with the sights, sounds and flavors of Israel. Weekend highlights included a private reception at the Sands Aviation Hanger, interactive sessions featuring Gidi Grinstein, President and Founder of the Reut Institute; Adam Braun, Taglit-Birthright Israel alumnus,noted author and founder of Pencils of Promise, and Leonard Saxe, Ph.D., and a spectacular night of entertainment at the home of Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson featuring comedian Elon Gold and performer Kristen Hertzenberg. The excitement and commitment to Birthright Israel was contagious and inspiring. A UNIQUE SUMMER As we reflect on the year passed, this summer stands out as one of the most crucial times in our Foundation’s history. During the difficult summer in Israel, as bombs were being fired and tunnels dug into Israel, our leadership and our professional partners at Taglit-Birthright Israel moved swiftly to meet the challenges in front of them. In July, Laurie Blitzer and I took an impromptu trip to Israel to witness for ourselves how expertly the Taglit-Birthright Israel team, led by International CEO, Gidi Mark, were handling the situation, to thank them for their heroic efforts, and to meet with trip participants to hear firsthand what they were experiencing. We returned home prouder than ever knowing that our work is not only enriching young Jewish adult lives but building a new generation of educated, ardent supporters of Israel and its people. Upon our return from Israel we quickly put in place a series of email updates and teleconference calls featuring some of Israel’s diplomatic and geopolitical leaders as well as our own Taglit-Birthright Israel leaders in order to update our supporters on the situation in Israel. These updates informed our donors and leaders about the unfolding crisis and helped us understand what Taglit-Birthright Israel was doing to assure the safety and security of the thousands of trip participants who were in the country during these difficult days. These insider communications were greatly appreciated by our supporters and all who were concerned about the situation. LOOKING BACK AND AHEAD It has been a busy, monumental and gratifying year. As you read through the following pages, we hope you will be inspired by the photos and stories our trip participants and supporters have shared with us and will gain an even greater understanding of why we consider Taglit-Birthright Israel the most significant investment one can make towards a stronger Jewish future. Looking ahead to 2015, we know we will continue on our trajectory of growth and constant improvement. 10 DAYS. 40 NEW FRIENDS. A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. With my suitcase and ticket in hand, I’m on my way to the airport. Nervous. Excited. It’s hard to believe I’m about to travel half way around the world with 40 strangers. For 10 days, we will be roommates and bus mates. In 10 days, we will become friends as we explore a land rich with history, culture and tradition. I’ve heard countless times that this trip is life-changing and I’m ready to find out what that means for myself.

Going to Israel had always been a dream of mine and last winter, I was fortunate enough to participate in a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip. After 10 days traveling across Israel, I realized that Taglit-Birthright Israel truly is an irreplaceable gift. Like many of my fellow participants, I went on Taglit-Birthright Israel looking forward to the experience, the lifelong friendships, and the incredible memories, but little did I know the trip would be beyond what I signed up for. Although my trip ended in January of 2014, my journey did not stop there. Six months later, I returned to Israel to study abroad at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The puzzle came together on my second to last day on Taglit-Birthright Israel when we climbed Masada. It may sound corny, but that was when I realized that I had to return to Israel to finish what I started. I may not know exactly what that is right now, but I am going to figure it out. My semester abroad in Israel is not where my journey is going to end. With each day I spend in Israel, the chance of me staying grows higher and higher. I know I would not be here today without the unforgettable experience of Taglit-Birthright Israel.

AS I LOOK BACK ON THIS PAST YEAR, TWO OVERARCHING THOUGHTS COME TO MIND.

First, throughout our 14 years of operation, we have remained focused on our purpose, which is delivering a unique and meaningful 10-day educational trip to every participant, even in times of great challenges. The second is that we have continuously challenged ourselves to improve our efforts and seek innovative ways to keep our young participants engaged. 2014 was an incredible year. We end it filled with great pride knowing that we have delivered our promise to thousands of young Jewish adults who, thanks to the support of the Birthright Israel Foundation and friends like you, went on our journey and discovered for themselves what being Jewish means and how being in Israel adds to that experience. Here are just a few of our highlights from the past year. A SUMMER OF LEARNING We passed a significant milestone early in the summer as we welcomed our 400,000th participant and 70,000th Israeli participant. That joyous moment was quickly overshadowed by the challenges of assuring the safety and well-being of some 8,400 Taglit-Birthright Israel participants who were in the country during the violent unfolding of this summer’s conflict. Yet, even those difficult days offered our visitors something special that, while not planned for or invited, was still incredibly meaningful. It is often said that out of adversity comes strength and learning. Even as the sirens sounded, our trip participants knew they were being well cared for and expressed a deepened connection to Israel and its people and a richer understanding of what it is like to live here. NEW UNDERTAKINGS During 2014, we expanded trip eligibility to young Jewish adults who had traveled to Israel on peer trips when they were younger. We did so after much examination, coming to understand that visiting Israel during one’s early teenage years is probably too early in one’s development to assure a young person is ready to fully understand and attach to Israel in the ways the Taglit-Birthright Israel program offers. We also launched Taglit Fellows this past summer, a unique training program for an elite cadre of American trip leaders through the iCenter. The new program aims to provide up to 200 intensively trained trip leaders a year, providing trip participants from North America with a cadre of highly educated, purposeful and motivated bus leaders. Our first trained leaders will be onboard buses this winter. EXPANDING THE POWER OF LEARNING AND GROWING Last summer we held our fourth annual Excel Fellows leadership program, which brought a cohort of 40 talented business and technology students to Israel where they spent 10 weeks interning with prominent multinational companies in a wide range of industries including finance, venture capital, consulting, hi-tech, bio-tech and social media. The program now has 260 alumni, 130 in North America and 130 Israelis—all interacting and maintaining their ties to each other and helping to create a strong, connected future for us all. LOOKING TOWARD 2015 As we approach the end of 2014, our team is busy planning and preparing for 2015, our 15th year of operation. This winter, we plan to bring more than 14,000 participants to Israel from our growing list of countries around the globe. We continue to focus on our goal—to offer each young Jewish adult the opportunity to explore Israel for 10 incredible days with their own eyes, minds and hearts. We will be sure to listen carefully to their reactions and cater their experiences to their needs. An important goal remains at the core of our work: to open our participants’ minds, to deepen their understanding of what it means to be Jewish, and to foster a lifelong connection to our homeland and the Jewish people. MIFGASH

Mifgash, or “encounter” in Hebrew, is used to describe one of the most meaningful aspects of the Taglit-Birthright Israel trip. During the Mifgash, Taglit-Birthright Israel participants from around the world are introduced to their Israeli peers, most of whom are Israel Defense Force soldiers, to create bonds of understanding and lifelong friendship. On a typical Taglit-Birthright Israel trip, six to eight young Israelis join the group for half of the 10-day trip. They are full participants and become an integral part of the trip experience. The Mifgash gives participants an intimate look into the lives of Israelis, allowing them to see similarities beyond the surface of differences in their lives. Through mornings spent on the bus, afternoons visiting historical sites, and nights filled with group and one-on-one discussions, participants walk away from this impactful experience with a heightened understanding of Israeli military service, society, politics, culture, and family life from the perspective of their Israeli peers. “Establishing relationships with our Israeli participants made the experience that much more personal and powerful, and allowed me to feel attached to Israel in a way that I believe I would have never discovered otherwise,” summer 2014 participant, Olivia Wittels, noted while reflecting on her Taglit-Birthright Israel trip.

The power of this encounter can be life-changing for participants – and the impact on young Israelis is equally profound. A recent survey of former Mifgash participants solidified the importance of this program for Israeli youth as over 75 percent of respondents felt ‘very strongly’ that Taglit-Birthright Israel strengthened the importance of their army service. While many Israelis initially join the program thinking they will help participants better understand Israel and the IDF, they walk away having discovered their own identities and a newfound pride in their IDF service, their country, and their Jewish heritage. To date, over 70,000 young Israelis have participated in the Mifgash program. Their experience has not only had a transformative effect on next-generation Israel, but Jewish communities and the larger Jewish world alike. 15

TOUR EDUCATOR As Shai Goren prepares to lead his 15th TaglitBirthright Israel tour, he’s quick to point out that he is a “tour educator,” and not simply a “tour guide.”

“I can never go back to just ‘guiding’ a tour the way I was, just talking from the front of a bus,” said the 28-year old Goren, who lives in northern Israel. “It needs to be about my audience - engaging those in my group, involving them, and making Israel and Judaism relevant to them in a very real way.”

“Being a tour guide may be sufficient, but it’s not enough,” said Scott Copeland, Director of the Institute. “We want to bring young people to Israel not as mere tourists, but as members of a greater Jewish world. Our participants therefore deserve tour educators facilitating exploration of a Jewish identity and leading a Jewish journey.”

It’s an enhancement that is not merely descriptive, but substantive, and part of Taglit-Birthright Israel’s overall educational philosophy, which – according to Dr. Zohar Raviv, the program’s International VP of Education – “aims to transform the guide into a group leader conversant with the unique challenges and needs of contemporary Jewry, and the skills to address them effectively within the Israel trip itself.” To that end, in 2012 Taglit-Birthright Israel launched its Institute for Tour Educators, in cooperation with the Maimonides Fund and Keren Karev. The institute

Nearly 300 participants have graduated from the Institute since its inception, and the number is growing as nearly 70 percent of tour leaders have gone through the program. The Institute covers all elements of the Ministry of Tourism’s training program, and adds topics related to Jewish life and identity, informal and experiential education, vision and goals of Taglit-Birthright Israel, teaching methods, pedagogy and facilitation skills.

“At the end of the process, they emerge as educators, and not merely as service providers,” Copeland said. “That is a key distinction.” A recent study by the Jerusalem-based Henrietta Szold Institute commissioned by Taglit-Birthright Israel found that this type of professional development is fundamentally changing the approach and perspective of those who lead the trips. According to Dr. Raviv, “The study identified a new sense of mission among those who graduated from the Institute, and a measurable connection to Taglit-Birthright Israel’s educational objectives.”

“This Institute is a solid example of what an organic, learning organization can do to be more effective,” Copeland said, “and we owe it to our founders, donors and participants to make that happen.” For his part, Goren said he is unmistakably better and more effective in his role as tour educator for having graduated from the Institute. “It has prepared me for a more immersive experience from my end and for participants, the effects of the trip are more long-lasting as a result.”

BENEFACTORS MISSION Birthright Israel Foundation’s Benefactors Circle launched with a special mission to Israel in January of 2014. Felicia and Sander Levy chaired the mission which brought twelve of the Foundation’s most dedicated supporters to Israel to experience the power of Taglit-Birthright Israel firsthand. A special thank you to Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson who generously provided use of their personal plane for mission participants’ travel.

MY BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL MISSION This summer, twenty eight Birthright Israel Foundation supporters embarked on the "My Birthright Israel" mission where they experienced Israel through the eyes of Taglit-Birthright Israel participants. The mission was Co-Chaired by Ali & Zach Shuman, Wendy & Steven Shenfeld, and Keri & Stuart Zaro.

3rd ANNUAL BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL WEEKEND Honorary chairs, Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson, were joined by Birthright Israel leadership, staff and our generous supporters and local Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni in Las Vegas for our 3rd Annual Birthright Israel Weekend. The weekend, chaired by Andrea & Mike Leven and Kim & Marc Schwartz, brought close to 100 guests together for a weekend filled with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Israel.

ANNUAL GIVING CIRCLES EVENT In December, Annual Giving Circles supporters gathered at Sony Wonder Lab in New York City for a night of celebration. This exclusive event featured Bret Stephens, Deputy Editorial Page Editor for The Wall Street Journal, as the keynote speaker. Board members Laurie Blitzer and Phil Rosen, who offered closing remarks, were in attendance.

EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS GETTING SOCIAL WITH RANDI ZUCKERBERG Randi Zuckerberg, Taglit-Birthright Israel alumna, Founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media and author of Dot Complicated, was center stage on the West Coast at two important events this past February. On February 19th, the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles hosted a special Lion of Judah luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel with Randi as the keynote speaker. On February 20th, Randi was also the featured speaker at a packed cocktail reception in San Francisco. Over 100 guests, many of them Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni, were in attendance.

A SPECIAL EVENING WITH CHARLES AND RITA BRONFMAN On March 12, Rita and Charles Bronfman, Taglit-Birthright Israel Co-Founder, hosted a special Birthright Israel Foundation gathering for over 130 guests. The event, held at the Bronfman’s home in Palm Beach, also included 9 Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni. Florida Leadership Council Chair and Birthright Israel Foundation Board of Directors member, Judith Levy, worked closely with Charles in shaping the evening which included a presentation by Ari Shavit, author of My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel. BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL FOUNDATION GALA: HONORING DAN OCH On March 31, we filled the Cipriani 42nd Street event space in New York City with more than 500 of our friends and supporters to celebrate Dan Och and his tremendous leadership of Birthright Israel Foundation as board chair from 2008-2013. TASTE OF ISRAEL Members of the Westchester, New York Jewish community gathered at the Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale on September 16th to celebrate the community support of Birthright Israel Foundation. The 75 guests in attendance experienced the tastes, sights, and smells of a traditional Israeli “shuk,” or marketplace. Additionally, donors heard three personal stories from a series of monologues performed by Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni. 21

ANNUAL DETROIT PROGRAM Michele and Mitchell Bleznak hosted 80 guests at their home in Detroit on May 13th. Attendees had the opportunity to have their gifts tripled thanks to both the 2014 Adelson Challenge and Detroit-area Gilbert Challenge. The event also featured a private look at photographs from Through the Lens, Birthright Israel Foundation’s first formal photo exhibit.

GATHERING THE COMMUNITY Brooke and Steven Schonfeld graciously opened their Long Island home on September 4th to over 100 guests for a community event in support of the Birthright Israel Foundation. Guests enjoyed the fine late-summer weather while listening to speakers Lee Brodsky, a local Taglit-Birthright Israel alumnus, and Patricia Loeb who participated in Birthright Israel Foundation’s summer 2014 mission and recently joined the Foundation’s Leadership Council. AN AFTERNOON WITH BANK LEUMI USA On September 10th, Birthright Israel Foundation partnered with Bank Leumi USA for an intimate lunch and panel discussion at the Bank Leumi USA office. With 50 guests in attendance, the panel, moderated by Foundation Board of Directors Vice Chair, Laurie Blitzer, included Board Chair, Josh Nash; Board members, Stephen Siderow and Sander Levy; and Bank Leumi USA President and CEO, Avner Mendelson. Additionally, Birthright Israel Co-Founder, Charles Bronfman, was in attendance as well as former Chairman of the Board of Birthright Israel Foundation, Dan Och, who offered opening remarks. 22

ATLANTA CELEBRATES BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL FOUNDATION The Atlanta Jewish community came together several times throughout the year in celebration of Birthright Israel Foundation. On July 24th, supporters heard from guest speaker Jay Kaiman, Executive Director of The Marcus Foundation, at the home of Aviva and Eyal Postelnik. 80 guests enjoyed a moderated discussion led by CNN Editorial Producer, Nadia Bilchik, featuring Leonard Saxe, Ph.D., Director of the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University. This event held on August 8th and hosted by Suzanne and Joel Eisenberg and Nancy Galanti was unique as the majority of the guests in attendance were parents of potential Taglit-Birthright Israel participants. The Atlanta community ended 2014 with a special day of events on November 18th comprised of a private lunch at the home of Joyce and Henry Schwob; an afternoon meetingwith the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and Taglit-Birthright Israel Co-Founder, Charles Bronfman; and an evening program featuring a performance by three world renowned musicians from The Schwob School of Music. Notable guests also included author, Ari Shavit, and Birthright Israel Foundation board member, Michael Leven. 23

AN EVENING WITH THE ADELSONS

165 members from the Greater Boston Community gathered at the home of Valerie and Mark Friedman on October 2nd for a special evening with Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson. Guests heard from the Adelsons, as well as Barry Shrage, President of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston.

LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER Over 100 members from the Los Angeles Persian Jewish community came together on October 22nd for an exclusive reception to benefit Birthright Israel Foundation at the home of hosts Sabrina and Kamran Younesi. Hosted by Catherine and John Farahi, Farah and Steve Gozini, Dorice and Jacob Melamed, Elanor and Javid Moreh, Shiva and Jahanshah Moreh, this event featured two distinguished guest speakers, Zohar Raviv, International Vice President of Education for Taglit-Birthright Israel, and Yaki Lopez, Consul for Political Affairs for the Israeli Consulate of Los Angeles.

BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL FOUNDATION TAKES ON THE MIDWEST Birthright Israel Foundation held an exclusive event in Chicago on November 3rd which included a luncheon hosted by Lee Miller and Chicago Leadership Council and Board of Directors member, Joseph Gutman, and an evening program hosted by Morrie Silverman and Board of Directors member, Lori Komisar. Foundation Futures, Birthright Israel Foundation’s planned giving program, is committed to establishing the long-term financial sustainability of the Taglit-Birthright Israel trip in order to ensure that this gift will continue to inspire future generations. Foundation Futures works with donors to identify planned giving vehicles that maximize their financial and philanthropic goals while also supporting the continuity of Taglit-Birthright Israel. Through planned gifts such as bequests, retirement account distributions, charitable lead and remainder trusts, insurance policies, specialized endowment funds, and the Birthright Israel Charitable Gift Annuity, donors have the chance to leave a meaningful and lasting impact on the Jewish future.

Foundation I have been a supporter of Taglit-Birthright Israel since the programâ€™s inception.

How and why did you first become connected to Taglit-Birthright Israel? What inspired you about the program?

have done an incredible job with it. But now itâ€™s up to others to carry the program forward. It is imperative for us to ensure that this trip continues to send young Jewish adults to Israel and to educate them about both modern day Israel and our rich Jewish heritage. I want to make sure Taglit-Birthright Israel is a part of the Jewish future and that my grandchildren and greatgrandchildren will be able to have this incredible experience.

FUTURES I read a letter that a participant wrote to Birthright Israel Co-Founder, Michael Steinhardt, and right away I saw what an incredible impact this trip could have and how it could be the answer to the major questions facing world Jewry. I ended up taking the first two missions of Jewish leaders to Israel to see the trip in action; everyone was wowed.

NEXT: CREATING NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALUMNI TO EXPERIENCE JEWISH LIFE A 10-day Taglit-Birthright Israel trip has the potential to spark lifelong Jewish journeys. NEXT: A Division of Birthright Israel Foundation leverages this opportunity by building partnerships with organizations across the country to create a more dynamic Jewish landscape for the Taglit-Birthright Israel generation. We train hundreds of engagement professionalsâ€”people in local communities who work to connect Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni and young adults to Jewish life. We also work with communities to ignite new engagement strategies, and give Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni a platform to share their ideas for opportunities they'd like to co-create with their communities. TRAINING PROFESSIONALS AND VOLUNTEERS In 2014, NEXT trained 161 professionals and volunteers tasked with engaging young Jewish adults from 119 different organizations at 5 conveners throughout the country. Additionally, NEXT trained 39 professionals throughout 2014 through 3 multi-session cohort experiences based in the Ohio Valley, San Francisco, and New York City. In 2014, we also helped Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni create their own, authentic Jewish experiences for their friends through the NEXT Shabbat and holiday programs by offering them educational resources and microgrants.

In 2012 the Foundation received a $20 million advance payment from a donor for 2013. This resulted in revenue being understated by $20 million in 2013. 1
