NEEDLES AND EXTRAS
1 pair each 4mm and 3.25mm Knitting Needles, or sizes that give correct tension. A yarn needle; 1 stitch holder; 2 buttons.
TENSION
21 sis and 44 rows to 10 cm over fishermans rib, using 4mm needles.
JUMPER BACK
Using 4mm needles, cast on 55 (57-59-63-67-73) sis. Beg rib-1st row (RS)-K2, * P1, K1, rep from* to last st, K1. 2nd row -K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end. Rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 3 (3-4-4-4-4) cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row. Beg fishermans rib - 1st row (RS) -K1, * K1B, P1, rep from * to last 2 sis, K1B, K1.
2nd row - Knit.
Last 2 rows form fishermans rib.
Cont in fishermans rib until work measures 17 (18-20-21-26-29) cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row.
Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark beg of armholes as there is no armhole shaping.
Cont in fishermans rib until work measures 12 (13-13-14-14-15) cm from coloured threads ‘ working last row on WS.
Shape Shoulders -Cast off 6 (6-6-7-7-8) sts at beg of next 4 rows, then 5 (5-6-6-8-8) sis at beg of foll 2 rows. Leave rem 21 (23-23-23-23-25) sis on a stitch holder.
FRONT
Work as for Back to** .
Work 6 (10-10-12-12-14) rows fishermans rib.
Divide For Front Opening - Next row (RS)-Rib 25 (26-27-29-3134), cast off next 5 sis, nb to end.
Cont on these 25 (26-27-29-31-34) sis until work measures 8 (8.5-8.5-9-9-9.5) cm from coloured threads, working last row on WS.
Shape Neck - Next row (RS) -Cast off 4 sis, rib to end = 21 (22-2325-27-30) sis.
Work 1 row.
Dec one st at neck edge in every row until 17 (17-18-20-22-24) sis rem.
Cont without shaping until work measures same as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, working last row on WS. Work 1 row.
Shape Shoulder - Cast off 6 (6-6-7-7-8) sis at beg of next row and foll alt row. Work 1 row. Cast off rem 5 (5-6-6-8-8) sts.
With WS facing, join yam to rem 25 (26-27-29-31-34) sis and cont until work measures 8 (8.5-8.5-9-9-9.5) cm from coloured threads, working last row on WS. Work 1 row.
Shape Neck - Next row (WS)-Cast off 4 sis, rib to end= 21 (22-2325-27-30) sis.
Dec one st at neck edge in every row until 17 (17-18-20-22-24) sis rem. Cont without shaping until work measures same as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, working last row on WS.
Shape Shoulder -Complete as for other shoulder. centre of sleeve to shoulder seams. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on button to centre of neckband as pictured. Fasten throught eyelet hole of edging.
SLEEVES
Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 31 (33-33-35-35-35) sis.
Beg rib -Work in rib as for lower band of Back until work measures 3 (3-4-4-4-4) cm ‘ from beg, ending with a 2nd row.
Change to 4mm needles.
Beg fishermans rib -Work 2 rows fishermans rib as for Back. Keeping fishermans rib correct, inc one st at each end of next row, then in every foll 6th row until there are 47 (51-51-57-57-61) sis.
Cont without shaping until work measures 16 (18-19-21-23-28) cm from beg, working last row on WS.
Shape Top -Cast off 5 sis at beg of next 6 rows. Cast off rem sts loosely.
NECKBAND
Using mattress st, join shoulder seams. With RS facing and using 3.25mm needles, knit up 12 (14-14-16-16-18) sis evenly along right side of neck, knit across sis from back stitch holder, then knit up 12 (14-14-16-16-18) sis evenly along left side of neck= 45 (51-51-55- 55-61) sis.
1st row (WS)-K1, * P1, K1, rep from* to end.
2nd row -K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows until neckband measures 2.5 cm, ending with a 2nd row.
Cast off loosely in rib.
RIGHT FRONT BAND
With RS facing and using 3.25mm needles, knit up 21 sis evenly along right front opening and side edge of neckband.
For Girl - Work 3 rows rib as for Neckband.
4th row - Rib 7, yfwd to make a stitch, rib 2tog, rib 6, yfwd to make a stitch, rib 2tog, rib 4 = 2 buttonholes.
Work 3 rows rib. Cast off loosely in rib.
For Boy - Work 7 rows rib as for Neckband. Cast off loosely in rib.
LEFT FRONT BAND
With RS facing and using 3.25mm needles, knit up 21 sis evenly along side edge of neckband and left front opening.
For Boy - Work 3 rows rib as for Neckband.
4th row - Rib 4, yfwd to make a stitch, rib 2tog, rib 6, yfwd to make a stitch, rib 2tog, nb 7 = 2 buttonholes.
Work 3 rows rib. Cast off loosely in rib.
For Girl -Work 7 rows rib as for Neckband. Cast off loosely in rib.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Sew in sleeves evenly between coloured threads, placing centre of sleeve to shoulder seams. Join side and sleeve seams. Place Right Front Band over Left Front Band for Girl or Left Front Band over Right Front Band for Boy and sew side edge of bands to cast off sis at centre front, sewing through both thicknesses. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
BEANIE
Using 4mm needles, cast on 79 (89-99) sis.
Beg rib - 1st row (RS) -K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1. 2nd row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 5 cm from beg, ending with a 1st row (RS of brim will be facing when turned back).
Beg fishermans rib - 1st row (RS)-K1, * K1 B, P1, rep from * to last 2 sis, K1 B, K1.
2nd row -Knit.
Last 2 rows form fishermans rib.
Cont in fishermans rib until work measures 14 (16-18) cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row.
Shape Crown - 1st row (RS)-Rib 9, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, rib 7, rep from* to end= 65 (73-81) sis.
Work 7 rows rib.
9th row - Rib 9, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, rib 5, rep from* to end= 51 (57-63) sis.
Work 5 rows rib.
15th row - Rib 9, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, rib 3, rep* to end= 37 (41-45) sis.
Work 5 rows rib.
21st row -Rib 1, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, rib 1, rep from * to end = 19 (21-23) sis.
Work 1 row rib.
Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sis, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Using mattress st seam, join side edges together to form centre back seam, reversing seam for brim. Turn back brim. Make a pom pom and attach to top of beanie as pictured.
