OCTOBER 2026 sharing news and joking around like we might not do otherwise. If I had my way, I think I would play Bingo with my family every week if I could. But we’re all pretty busy, so once a month is about the best we can do—except for my mom and me, who play together more often. Anyway, I’m just passing this along as an idea for other Bingo players who may want to try and turn their Bingo playing into a family affair. —RMC, Washington, via email
A Family Affair Dear Aunt Bingo, Sometimes I wonder why Bingo isn’t more of a family event for more people. My mom, my brothers and I go together all the time, and now two of my nieces have joined in. We use the time to catch up on personal stuff—and yes, we have been shushed more than once for being too chatty—and it has struck me that there is something about being out and about on neutral ground instead of at home that makes everybody feel they are on equal ground and relaxed about
Dear RMC, Wow, it’s wonderful to hear that you are part of three generations of one family that has found Bingo to be an activity you all enjoy sharing. I don’ know how you do it. I’ve tried fifty ways to get family to go with me to Bingo, but I rarely succeed. It may require that your family members already have a fondness for the game and just need someone like you to say, “OK, let’s make this happen!” Either way, let’s hope your letter pushes a few others to make Bingo time family time as well. And if anyone else out there plays bingo family style let us know! —Aunt Bingo Write to Aunt Bingo c/o the Bingo Bugle, P.O. Box 527, Vashon, WA 98070, or e-mail tara@bingobugle. com.
Veterans on the Road Again The government is calling on veterans to consider careers in commercial trucking with the creation of the Freedom Haulers initiative, a new effort to help veterans move into civilian driving jobs. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), with its military driver program, is making it easy for experienced veteran drivers to get a commercial driver’s license (CDL). In many cases you can get a waiver on both the skills and knowledge tests. A few facts: Every state is part of the veteran skills-test waiver program and all have specific requirements. Seven additional states just joined the Even Exchange program, which allows qualified veterans with certain military driving experience to waive the knowledge test. Eligibility: If you had a military driver’s license for at least two years, with no suspensions or
PICKS OF THE MONTH The Whisper Man (R) — Based on the novel by Alex North, this crime thriller film was produced by the Russo Brothers and stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, and Adam Scott. Although it’s deemed a crime thriller, it’s got the tone of a full-on horror flick, and with the dark subject matter at hand, it’s sure to keep the hairs on your arms standing. Scott portrays Tom, a widowed father to an 8-year-old son, who decides to move his family to a quiet town named Featherbank to start anew. Featherbank, however, used to be tormented by a serial killer named the Whisper Man, and somehow, the killer has escaped. Tom’s son is subsequently taken, leaving him with no choice but to reach out to his estranged father, a detective named Pete (De Niro), to help find the missing boy. (Netflix) The Last Sunrise (R) — Maia Reficco from the rebooted Pretty Little Liars series leads this steamy romantic drama. Based on the 2025 novel of the same name, The Last Sunrise follows Ry, a young American woman who accompanies her mother, Isolde (Eva Longoria), on a business trip to Majorca, Spain. With health issues weighing her down mentally, Ry isn’t expecting much out of this

disqualifications, you can qualify if you apply within two years of leaving that position. (It used to be 12 months, but with the Freedom Haulers initiative, that’s been extended.) What if you didn’t have a driving job during your active duty period and your MOS doesn’t cover you for an automatic CDL? trip ... until she meets a local boy named Julian (Fernando Lindez). A passionate affair between the two is inevitable, but their romance gets threatened when Isolde reveals to Ry that she needs to buy out Julian’s family’s docks to bring her business deal to fruition. (Amazon Prime Video) Girls Like Girls (R) — Actress and singer Hayley Kiyoko got her start in the 2011 film Lemonade Mouth, a Disney Channel original film. Since then, she’s had a steady career in music, film and TV. In 2015, she released the song “Girls Like Girls” with a music video that’s somewhat of a sneak peek of the new Girls Like Girls film, which just released on Peacock. This comingof-age drama film is directed by Kiyoko and stars Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy. Da Costa plays 17-year-old Coley, who begins a new chapter of her life in rural Oregon with her estranged father, Curtis (Zach Braff). Soon after she moves, Coley meets another girl named Sonya (Molloy), and they form a deep emotional connection that’s bound to leave one girl heartbroken. Bewitched Bingo I begin to get excited as soon as the giant spider climbs up and sits atop our local coffee shack. Our tiny town loves Halloween and we decorate at Christmas levels. The real estate office next to the coffee shack puts up a huge net for the spider, while down the street, the hardware store boasts a whole line of pumpkins from the little twoinch type all the way up to a big 30-incher.
OCTOBER 2026 Witches were very popular this year, and several varieties were on display. The giant outdoor giraffe advertising a boutique called, you guessed it Giraffe, was even sporting a witch hat, while the big pig across the street was jaunty in his clown attire. Our favorite Bingo hall sponsored a Halloween special two days before the big event that was loads of fun. Several games were made up especially for the holiday, the first being a witch’s hat which consisted of: the third B; the second I; the top N; the second G; then a line across the middle, fun but didn’t take long for someone to win. The next special game was a broomstick, which was the N row, the bottom B then next to bottom I, the next to bottom G and the bottom O. That proved a little harder, but Kate won it and was proud to proclaim her Bingo. The Jack O Lantern was a blackout, minus two, which also went pretty fast and all too soon the evening was nearly over. We had one more big surprise in the shape of a giant male witch— wait, are they called warlocks?
He circulated the room, handing out fun-size candy bars to the participants. I am particularly fond of Snickers, although candy I do not need. I ate and enjoyed it anyway. The next day was Trick or Treat Night when all the little kids dress up and collect candy from the merchants. The streets are blocked off so the little ones stay safe and can have a grand time running through town. Superman and Spiderman were very popular, and I kept running into varieties of their costumes. I volunteered to help keep the Social Center open for potty breaks and give out candy. I love seeing all the little kids dressed up. This year we also sold baked potatoes as a fundraiser and they were sure good, what with all the toppings available—and certainly better fuel for the body than straight candy. One little boy came dressed as pile of leaves, and to this day I don’t think I’ll ever see such a cute costume. Toward the end of the evening, there was a disturbance outside our door that concerned me somewhat. When I went to see
WISCONSIN EDITION what it was, I discovered the warlock from the bingo hall scaring a group of youngsters outside our door. He was snarling and growling and making a horrible racket. Kids screamed. I finally got close enough to mutter, “What on earth are you doing?” “I’m just having a bit of Halloween fun,” he growled back. “Stand back. I’m about to do my big number.” He suddenly leapt into the air, making a weird twist then fell to the ground and started kicking his feet in the air and howling like a banshee. Kids fled to their parents, except for one little boy who stood crying. Just then I was struck with inspiration. IMay raced3rd into the center, collected a handful of candy bars then ran out and dropped them in the crying boy’s bucket. “Happy Halloween!” I said happily. “And don’t fret another second about that silly warlock, he was just having a candy tantrum!” and the boy flashed me a huge smile. I think next Halloween we should stick with witches and turn all the warlocks into clowns.

OCTOBER 2026
N ews from the R eal W orld & C yberspace Autumn Bingo Challenge The West Virginia Department of Tourism recently unveiled its official 2026 fall foliage projection map, introducing weekly updates throughout the season to provide travelers with accurate leaf-peeping information. They also announced their Almost Heaven Swing BINGO Challenge for the autumn season. Inspired by the state’s swing photo locations, the “SWINGO” challenge invites travelers to visit nearly 60 swing spots across West Virginia and check in on mobile devices to earn seasonal prizes. To participate, visit wvtourism. com/swings to register for a digital bingo card delivered directly to your smartphone. Autumn colors were projected to spread throughout the region until early November. Bill of Rights Bingo The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) brought back its popular exhibits and activities to the Minnesota State Fair this year, offering fairgoers a chance to connect with nature through hands-on experiences. DNR staff gave daily talks about the three dozen species of native
fish featured in their outdoor pond. People also learned about wildfire prevention at the Wildlife Prevention Building, and a 65-foot Fire Tower. Interactive exhibits featured information about native bird species in Minnesota and their songs. Photo ops included giant butterfly wings, a hiking boot, nature backdrops and Smokey Bear. New this year, families joined Woodsy Owl for Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights Bingo. The Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights is an initiative of Gov. Tim Walz and the Governor’s Children’s Cabinet to connect all Minnesota kids to the outdoors. Florida Gaming Raid Sixty illegal slot machines were seized from Uptown Bingo in Cape Coral following a raid by the Florida Gaming Control Commission and the Cape Coral Police Department in late July. Florida law prohibits instant bingo on electronic devices that display games of chance, including slot machines. FGCC said the raid serves as a reminder that not all bingo is legal. “Bingo is fun, and the FGCC supports lawful play,” said FGCC Commissioner
Peter Cuderman. “Unfortunately, some criminals prey on Floridians by using a bingo theme on slot machines and falsely claim these games are legal.” Trio Saves a Bingo Player When Bruce Bredbenner woke up from the cardiac arrest that nearly killed him, his doctors told him that he owed his life to a decision to play bingo. Instead of eating dinner at home, Bredbenner, 74, and his wife, Bev, 72, stopped in to play bingo at the Good Will Hose Company in Cressona, PA in August. During the second game, Bredbenner’s heart stopped. A nurse, a veteran firefighter, and an 18-year-old high school senior with fresh EMT training stepped in within 30 seconds to perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) until Schuylkill EMS arrived. Bredbenner, a resident of Hamburg who has congestive heart failure, was expected to return home with no cognitive issues. “If we would have gone home that night instead of to bingo, he’d be dead now,” Bev said. “That’s for sure.” From his hospital bed, Bredbenner thanked those who helped him. And Bev also shared how grateful the family is, including the couple’s three daughters and four grandchildren.

DESTINY Life is pre-destined even before a man is born, to live in paradise as it was fortold. Obedience is a must that man learn to walk without fear, but man misunderstood, so free will was given him. The future stands behind, following man’s trail, until he reaches the crossroad where he alone must choose his destination.

the caller won’t. This I absolutely do not understand. Players must think that the caller just sits there and calls out numbers. But there is much more to it. And folks seem to have no problem blaming the caller for their bad luck and shouting insults at him or her. But rarely does a caller get a thank you or an expression of appreciation for doing a good job or get compensated when a player has good luck and wins big. —Hard Worker in Nevada, via email
The Tipping Point Hi Guy, I am a Bingo hall staffer at a busy Indian casino. I enjoy working at Bingo and also enjoy playing during my free time. When I win I always include tipping the caller and the floor worker(s) because I know from experience how hard they work to make an outing at Bingo pleasant. And I have to say that I am surprised by how many players do not tip. Yes, I understand that many people consider tipping optional and may or may not do it, depending on their mood, jackpot amount or whatever. But the fact is, hard work for low wages deserves a tip in appreciation for service. At some of the places I attend, the floor workers will be tipped but
Dear Hard Worker, I agree with you that players should be more thoughtful of callers and not blame them for bad luck. It has to be awkward to be sitting in full view at the front of gaming room and be verbally slapped with complaints and grumpy insults for things that are simply not under a caller’s control. The topic of tipping at Bingo is a tricky one. People who currently, or at some time in their lives, worked at a job that relied on tips, understand how important tipping is and make sure to tip appropriately. Those who have not been at the receiving end of a job that includes tips may sometimes perceive it as an option they choose not to exercise. This becomes particularly true in a Bingo hall. For one thing, lots of people spend the majority of their gaming time in not-forprofit, charitable Bingo halls where tipping is not allowed. When they switch to a for-profit Bingo, they may simply not be aware that

tipping is appropriate, what to tip, when to tip or whom to tip, so they just ignore the tradition and do not tip at all. Others resist tipping because Bingo is gaming, where players rack up lots of losses between wins. Some feel that most of a jackpot is just recouping past losses, and “giving away” any portion of it in the form of a tip to a Bingo worker is basically just giving more money back to the casino or hall. Finally, the question of whom to tip is a very slippery slope. You clearly are a caller and would like to get a tip. So would the runner who brought the player his or her winnings, the front-desk worker who sold the winning paper, the vendor who sold them that lucky pink dauber, and the staffer at the front door who gave the player a fist bump and said, “Tonight’s your night!” Maybe pooling tips and spreading them evenly to the staff would be easier for players and workers alike? I’m afraid that I do not see an early end to the ongoing controversy over tipping at Bingo. But I hope your letter will at least encourage more players to keep tipping in mind during their next trip to a forprofit gaming establishment. — Guy Hey guys! (And gals!) VP Strategy Cards When I walk through the aisles of a casino, I’m amazed to find so few players using a strategy card when they play video poker. Why anyone would choose not to have the answers right in front of them when they’re risking their hard-earned money is beyond me. I teach video poker, yet you will never see me playing without a strategy card, just in case a hand shows up that I am not 100% sure about how to play correctly. By double-checking my strategy card, I always make the correct decision. So please don’t be embarrassed using a strategy card—all smart video poker players use them! There are several good strategy cards for video poker that are marketed by various companies. The ones I particularly like are the strategy cards developed by Bob Dancer and Liam Daily (available at bobdancer.com). There are many different kinds of video poker machines on a casino floor. They include the classic jacks-or-better, bonus poker games, deuces wild, joker wild and many more. Most video poker machines now have a menu of different games that you can choose to play. The issue is that the payback for winning hands for a specific game is not always the same from one machine to another in the same casino and also from one casino to another. Smart video poker players know the location of video poker machines that offer what is known as “full pay” games or those games that have the highest overall return in a casino and play them over lower paying games. Video poker strategy cards can help you locate these full pay machines. Here’s how. Let’s suppose you want to play jacks-or-better video poker. On the Dancer/Daily Jacks-or-Better
OCTOBER 2026 strategy card you will find four different common pay tables and the corresponding return percentage. The best or “full pay” pay table returns 99.54% while the least desirable pay table returns only 97.3%. Armed with your strategy card you can walk into any casino and scout around checking the pay tables you see on the video poker machine to the pay tables on the strategy card. This will help you locate the highest paying jacks-orbetter machine in the casino. It’s easy when you have your strategy card with you. Once you are ready to play, you need to know how to play your hands. That’s where the strategy card comes in real handy. The Dancer cards have four levels of strategy imprinted on them, from beginner to recreational, to basic to advanced. As the strategy level increases the complexity of the playing strategy also increases. I would strongly encourage a beginner to begin with the Level 1 Beginner strategy and once you master and feel comfortable using that strategy proceed to the next level. For most casual players, playing at Level 2 or 3 is quite sufficient. Let’s give an example of how the strategy card can help you make the right playing decision. Suppose you were dealt the following hand: Q (c), Q (d), 9 (d), 5 (d), 2 (d) Look closely at the hand. You are dealt a pair of queens, but you also have four cards to a flush (diamonds). The question is which is the better play—hold the pair of queens and draw three new cards or hold the four diamonds, and draw one card hoping to get a paying five card flush? The strategy card gives you the answer in a second. The card lists the hands with the greatest to lowest expected value (or profitability). You simply find the pair of queens (listed as a HIGH PAIR) and the 4-card flush on the strategy card and the hand highest up in the table of hand rankings is the preferred play. In this example it’s more profitable to hold the high pair over the 4-card flush. Within seconds you will be making the right play with the strategy card at your fingertips. Video poker offers average players an opportunity to play a casino game where it’s possible to get very high returns (close to, and sometimes slightly over, 100%). But you have to be able to choose your machine wisely and play accurately. By having a handy pocket strategy card with you at all times when you play it will help you easily achieve both objectives.

What's News in Nevada . . . Nightclub to Reopen for F1 Race The Wynn’s nightclub, XS, shuttered since earlier this year for a $10 million total remake, will reopen on Nov. 5, a couple of weeks prior to the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The grand-opening celebration will last for four nights and feature Calvin Harris, the Chainsmokers, RÜFÜS DU SOL, and Diplo b2b Hugel. Details about the renovation have been closely guarded, but we do know from the press release that the new and improved XS will showcase “refreshed interiors and new technology.” It’s the club’s first major redesign since it opened in 2008, then quickly turned into one of the highest-grossing nightclubs in the country. XS is the fourth club to undergo a complete reimagining in the last year or so, following Marquee at the Cosmopolitan, Drai’s After Hours at the newly renamed Vanderpump, and most recently the Vinyl Room, which replaced the Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay. New(ish) State Park in Las Vegas Ice Age Fossils State Park opened several years ago in North Las Vegas, but it seems to have escaped the notice of many, including us! The 315-acre park, is located at 8660 North Decatur Blvd. in North Las Vegas, right next to the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, at the northern edge of the metro area. A visitor center features indoor fossil exhibits, interactive displays, and a short introductory film; nearly four miles of trails wind through the park. It preserves an area rich in Ice Age fossils, such as Columbian mammoths, dire wolves and giant ground sloths. Open Wed-Sun, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., cost: $3 per person. Resorts World Jackpot A lucky slot player from Texas hit a $1.9 million jackpot in the highlimit room at Resorts World this past August on a Dragon Link
machine. It was reported that the winner had just started playing the machine around 11:30 p.m. for $25 a spin, when on a whim he cranked it up to $250 and hit the Grand Progressive. New Food Options A food court called Quick Bites has opened at Suncoast, featuring Steak ‘n Shake, Huey Magoo’s Chicken Tenders, and a Starbucks. And a food hall called Stix Asia has been announced for the UnCommons mixed-use development across the street from Durango Casino. Originally from Honolulu’s Waikiki Shopping Plaza, it will feature Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and Portuguese fare and is expected to open this fall. El Cortez’s New Steakhouse El Cortez’s new New York-style steakhouse will be called Alex Prime and at press time was said to be opening in “early fall.” It’s named after EC owner Kenny Epstein’s daughter, who died in February at the age of 41, and will occupy the space vacated by Siegel’s 1941 when it closed in April. The EC’s “singular goal is to set a new benchmark for luxury dining in downtown Las Vegas.” Leading the Alex team is David Robins, a well-known name in these parts; he helped open five Wolfgang Puck restaurants in the city over the past 30 years. The menu will feature USDA Prime steaks, slow-roasted prime rib, fresh seafood and shellfish, pasta, and “showstopping” desserts. Open daily at 5 p.m. Major Smoke-Free Room Opens The Palms is introducing a 7,300-square-foot non-smoking gaming area that’s completely enclosed. Located near the sports book, it features 200 new slots and its own bar, but no table games.

Luck or Hexes? It’s Autumn and the local robins are staggering around my lawn like they just closed down a fun club at 4:00am. – Ms. Know It All Love it, hate it? I love autumn with the smell of burning leaves, warm days, chilly nights, and hot chocolate with Baileys. At the same time, I hate trick or treating, Halloween pranks, and pumpkin spice in everything in the whole freaking world. You can tell, I’m not a pumpkin spice fan so call me an October curmudgeon and I won’t be offended. However, there are some interesting Autumn events that are worth sharing. Every year at this time, a drunken bird epidemic occurs. The autumn frosts cause leftover berries and fruit to ferment, turning them into pure alcohol. Flocks of birds, like robins, gorge on this tasty food which then turns them into flying drunks. This leads to inebriated birds flying erratically, walking in circles, and losing their fear of humans. Some even need to be placed in cardboard box drunk tanks by wildfire rescuers until they sober up. I’ve never witnessed this spectacle but must admit it’s probably hilarious to watch as long as the birds aren’t harmed. Warning to my human readers, do not try this cheap method of imbibing as we are not birds. Second, along those lines, autumn rainfall triggers massive blooms of wild fungi including the bright red Amanita Muscaria, a toxic mushroom. Caribou, deer, and squirrels actively seek out these mushrooms specifically to

OCTOBER 2026 consume them. As a result, they are found stumbling through the woods; acting disoriented and running in erratic loops; displaying temporary alternate states of consciousness from their fungal snacks. In other words, they’re tripping and not in the stumble bumble manner of an accidental fall. Again, dear readers, we are humans, not animals, and these mushrooms are TOXIC, which means they can cause death. Because our forest friends can do this does not mean humans can. Don’t even consider it. That brings us to October bingo where Autumn and Halloween together produce a unique blend of rules for attracting good fortune and avoiding cold streaks. One good luck hint is to use orange and black daubers this month as this appeases the spirits of the bingo hall and will trigger a hot streak. Also, carry a dried autumn leaf in your bingo bag to guarantee a jackpot before winter. However, it must be harvested on the day of the first seasonal frost, so get your butts out there if it’s not too late in the month. As for astrology, it says October is a high intensity energy month and numbers ending in 4 and 8 are the luckiest bingo card numbers. On the other hand, to avoid bad luck this month, do not change seats as this disturbs the residual luck left behind by players earlier in the autumn cycle. Avoid cards with the number 13 as its bad juju is doubled in October. And under no circumstances wish another player good luck before the first ball drops. Saying good luck aloud will hex the recipient’s cards. But then, heeheehee, that’s one way of eliminating competition or of hexing someone you dislike. Would I ever intentionally do that? Don’t ask, don’t tell. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Email me any pics you have of drunken birds; not of the humankind, please, at nlpzw6172@gmail.com
