Staffer Makes Bingo a Bummer Dear Aunt Bingo, I play at a Bingo hall in Michigan and have been playing there for years. There are two people that are rude and very loud. They joke and play all the time. They yell across the Bingo hall all the time. We have complained many times about them, but nothing is done. One of them works for the Bingo hall on one of the nights I play. The people that run the hall are her friends, so nothing gets done about it. They don’t care what they say to anyone. I know Bingo is a place for socializing, but this is too much. There are lots of players that want to leave the hall, but it’s close to home and we have been coming for years. If I call the state, I don’t want to get the hall in trouble, so what do I do? These two are a real piece of work! NOVEMBER 2023 provided a very important piece of information. The behavior you describe is one that I have seen not only in Bingo halls, but in other places as well: Someone who works at an establishment—a sales clerk, a cashier, a waiter, and yes, even a Bingo volunteer— sees their workplace as their “turf” and may sometimes get a little too comfortable there during off hours. I have stood in line at the grocery checkout waiting impatiently as a clerk spends three minutes buying a candy bar and gabbing with the cashier. I have waited in the aisle of a box store trying to get a worker’s attention while he is otherwise occupied chit-chatting with a coworker instead of doing his job. I suspect that these workers have no clue how irritating this behavior is to customers. In your case, the Bingo worker is on her own time, enjoying Bingo, in a place where she also sometimes works. As a result, she feels a degree of ownership and authority to do whatever she pleases—and apparently is bringing her Bingo buddy along for the ride. I’m surprised no one in charge of the Bingo hall has asked her to tone it down. But because they haven’t, I’m afraid she will feel no inclination to change her behavior. Perhaps a group of you could find a way to speak to the manager in private, saying that you think the behavior you describe is scaring off players which means less money for the charity. Short of that, or some brave soul approaching her and asking her politely if she wouldn’t mind taking it down a notch, I think you’re stuck. As far as contacting the state authorities to complain, that would be a waste of time. They are only responsible for the games running properly, not how players behave in the hall. Disability Claims Lost Since 2018 Since 2018, there have been technical problems with uploading disability claims on the Department of Veterans Affairs’ website. There were no indications at the time that anything was going awry. But those claims weren’t received. When you hit the SEND button, it didn’t go. Your disability claim has likely been sitting in that internet “dead zone,” neither moving forward nor backward, unseen. They found 32,000 claims sitting there unprocessed since 2018. Having found those 32,000 claims in the dead zone, the VA is sending out letters to all affected veterans. It brings up several questions: Did veterans file alternate claims when they didn’t hear back? Did they assume they’d been denied when they received no reply? Have the veterans, unfortunately, passed away? Do the surviving spouses know their veteran

You can file your claim online, by mail using Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits (VA Form 21-526EZ), in person when you deliver your application to a VA regional office or with help from a Veterans Service Officer. The instruction page says that it’s taking 104 days to get a decision. You can also check the status of your claim from that page. If you have trouble signing into your MyVA411 account, or creating one, you can call 800-698-2411 for help.

Stephen and Angela juggle work-life balance, social issues and multi-generational dynamics, along with raising Zuri and helping her achieve her best life. Fight Club Kate and I were a little late getting to Bingo at a recent session, and so found our seats in the very first row in front of the caller. It turned out to be the “cane table” as three players with canes were already seated there and two more joined us straightaway. We introduced ourselves to the other players and readied for play. The first three games were unremarkable, but then the fun started. One player challenged another’s Bingo and reached across to grab his card. It was apparent these people all knew each other well, but I could not tell how lighthearted the challenge was. It seemed rather

NOVEMBER 2023 serious at the time, but soon they were all laughing and clowning around. The challenged player’s card was a good Bingo, and we moved on to the next game. This time when someone at our table won, another “caner” leaped up and grabbed for his card. The winner was having none of it, however, and snatched his card out of reach. A floor worker arrived just in time to prevent a tussle, though they were certainly verbal. “You people have to calm down,” said the floor worker, “or I’ll have to ask you to leave.” “Leave?!” challenged the noisiest one. “Why you can’t ask us to leave. The bus doesn’t come for another two hours.” “Well, just be quieter,” said the floor worker, beating a retreat. We went on to the next game, a big H as well as a little h, when

Soon we were on to the final game, an Indian star, one of my personal favorites and I thought it was about time I won one. We played a regular Bingo on the way, which was won by someone far away in the room. Then Ralph, Joe and I were all on at the same time and we each began chanting the number we wanted. “Come on 63,” said Ralph, “Daddy needs a new cane. Come on.” I thought this distracting enough to almost lose my concentration when Joe started chanting, “Bring me 45. Bring me 45. I need a new walker.” But someone else won and I left the hall wondering how they might try to clobber each other at the next Bingo session.

It turned out to be the “cane table” the fussing began again. Players can have trouble with these double games, so I was preparing to help when Joe leaped up, grabbing his cane and yelled, “Bingo, by damn. I got a Bingo!” Ralph challenged him as predicted and a big fuss began. Then Joe leaned across the table putting most of his weight on his

Super Bingo Trouper I have always thought that one of the really fun things about playing Bingo are daubers. We take them for granted, you know. Generally, daubers are all nearly the same size. There are, though, some that are a bit larger and some are what you might call tiny. The ink used in most daubers is non-toxic. All this reminds me of a woman named Gloria whom I used to see at Bingo in Las Vegas. She had a special bag in which she brought

her daubers. She must have had thirty or more of them. One night I noticed that some of her daubers had ink that looked really strange. I had never seen such odd colors. I eventually found that she was actually mixing the ink together. She had a small pair of pliers in her bag and would keep toppingoff her daubers by filling some with others that were running out. Although her cards were daubed with some really odd colors, her system seemed to work well until one night. While she had the tops off two of her daubers, someone came by and accidentally bumped into her chair. Suddenly, she had dauber ink all over her dress and the table and herself. Worse still, she got it all over her hands and face and her Bingo cards were splashed with ink. It took a good

had happened. She was a real BINGO TROUPER. It is people like Gloria who provide the kind of memories that allow all of us to have wonderful stories to tell about the game we love the best. If you have a minute, take a deep breath and close your eyes and think of all the special people you have met over the years at Bingo. Sadly, for some of us many of them aren’t around anymore. But they entered our lives and made them better and more fun and gave us wonderful memories. My most vivid memory is of my Grandmother. She was my dad’s mother and the only grandparent I knew. The other three had died before I was born. It was she who brought me to Bingo back in 1957, back BEFORE daubers, when we marked our cards with kernels of corn. She had survived the Great Depression on a bottomland farm in r u r a l Indiana. She had raised four sons and seen them go on to better lives. She deserved a little rest and relaxation. Q: I just saw that Captain America star Chris Evans got married. Is his wife an actress? The last serious relationship I remember him having was with Jenny Slate. I was hoping that would work out. (I loved her in Parks and Recreation.) — K.K. A: The last of the Hollywood Chrises has joined the other two (Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt) in wedded bliss by marrying his girlfriend, Alba Baptista, of almost two years during a ceremony in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Baptista is a Portuguese actress whose most recent Englishlanguage films are the charming film Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris and the Netflix action series Warrior Nun. As for Evans and Jenny Slate, their relationship has been over since early 2018. They first started dating in 2016 after filming the movie Gifted. He raved about her in interviews, saying “Sometimes you just meet the same animal, and that’s just [what it’s like] with Jenny.” Slate, who has been married before, found love again with writer and art curator Ben Shattuck. The couple wed last year and also have a little girl named Ida. While Evans and Slate made a cute couple, it appears they ultimately found happiness with others the way it was meant to be.

The Complainers Club Hi Guy, There is a small group of people I play Bingo with. They aren’t really

“friends” because I only know them from Bingo, and we don’t really do anything else together. But we do sit together, there’s about 5 or 6 of us from one week to the next, and we’ve been sharing our Bingo table for at least 2 years. My problem is that they have grown into the biggest bunch of complainers you would never want to be anywhere near. “The hall is too cold,” “The hall is too hot,” I can’t hear the caller,” “the games are so slow here,” “there’s too much talking.” This bunch is always griping about something and I am really getting sick of it. I was thinking of pointing this out to them, but I can imagine what would happen–they’d start griping about me either behind my back, or worse, to my face. So, I think the best thing to do is just get away from them and play by myself or with other people.

My problem is that there is really only one night when I can play Bingo and that’s the night when they are all there. I like the hall and don’t want to switch to another place. Any suggestions? —Ray, Ohio, via e-mail Dear Ray, Looking for a Bingo Buddy divorce? Been there. And it ain’t easy. I’ll give you credit. You’ve considered a number of options. But after two years of regularly playing with this bunch I think you’re going to have to bite the bullet and try not sitting with them anymore. If you like the hall and the night that you play, it seems like you should try to find a way to stick with it. If you opt to sit elsewhere (like at a crowded table where they can’t join you), one of them may ask

you what’s up. That could give you the opportunity to be honest and (as politely as possible) say they are griping too much and it makes your Bingo night less enjoyable. That will put the ball entirely in their court. Either they can say they’ll lighten up and for you to come back, or they’ll let you be and add you to their list of complaints. Or you could make up a reason you moved, like you prefer the view or the location is nearer to the exit, or whatever else might justify your relo. Avoid Misplaying These Hands After decades of playing blackjack, I can truly say I have “seen it all.” For example, I watched in horror recently as a player started to double down on a 10-4 (14). The other players and I thought the player didn’t understand what he was holding so we tried to explain that doubling down on a hand that could bust with one draw card was not a smart play. But our advice fell on deaf ears and he did what he wanted to do. Sure enough, he drew a picture card and busted, losing twice his original wager in the processes. As bad as that play was, trust me when I say I have seen worse. In fact, just a few days later I watched a clueless player stand on ace-4 when the dealer showed a 3. That’s really bad. I often wonder why players make such foolish plays. Usually, it’s because of their ignorance about the game of blackjack. There is not much that you can do when this kind of player decides to make a foolish play other than to shake your head and hope that someday they will come to their senses and buy a book on blackjack before they run out of money. But even experienced players often make wrong plays, not because they don’t know any better, but because intuitively they feel the right play is wrong. Case in point—being dealt a pair of 8s when the dealer shows a 9 or 10. Most players are reluctant to split because even if you draw two 10s to the split 8s for pat 18 hands, they feel you’ll still probably lose two bets, instead of one, to the dealer’s 19 or 20. On average, casinos have a 2% edge over the masses that

NOVEMBER 2023 play blackjack. That’s 1.5% more than a basic strategy player. This gives you some idea of how poorly the majority of the public plays a “beatable” game. What follows is a list of three hands that make most players uneasy and indecisive, and a brief explanation as to the logic behind the correct play. Hopefully, you won’t make a playing error the next time you are dealt one of these uncomfortable hands. 8s against a 10 The right play is to split the 10s. The reason is that two hands of 8 are a much better starting point when the dealer shows a 10 then a single hand of 16. You are giving yourself two decent starting hands while breaking up the horrible 16. Both of the split 8s will lose money in the long run, however the combined losses will be less than what a single hand of 16 would lose in the long run. Yes, it’s sometimes difficult to think long term when you are staring at your 8s and your ten bucks is on the felt. But the bottom line is that if you don’t have the courage to make this play, then you shouldn’t be playing blackjack. 12 against 2 Now here’s a horrific hand! Hit it and you just know you are going to draw a 10 and bust. But it turns out you have more chances of not busting then busting when you hit (you have a 9 in 13 chance of surviving the hit). Plus, the dealer is not as vulnerable with a 2 face card as they are with a 4, 5 or 6 which is another reason why you hit 12 against a 2 (and 3) but stand against a 4, 5, and 6. A-7 vs 9 Most players don’t think twice about standing on soft 18 when the dealer shows a 9 face card. Well think of this. If the casino offered you the proposition that they would automatically give you a pat 18 on every hand for the rest of your life, would you take them up on it? If you did you would eventually die a small loser. The reason is the dealer’s 9 face card doesn’t change the situation one iota. If you stand you will win 8 out of 20 hands. If you hit until you got a soft 19, hard 17 or busted, you would win 9 out of 20 hands. The ace gives you flexibility on a soft 18, so take advantage of it and hit. If you master the above plays you are on the way to improving your chance of winning. If you continue to make the wrong plays, well it’s your money.

Fontainebleau Set to Open It’s taken sixteen years since ground was broken for Fontainebleau (a.k.a. The Drew) to announce a grand-opening date, but they finally have: the $3.7 billion 3,600-room resort-casino on the north Strip will open on December 13th. Two restaurants from the Miami Fontainebleau, Papi Steak and Komodo, will be recreated here; Komodo was the country’s top-grossing independent restaurant in 2022. The Hollywood Reporter describes Papi Steak as serving “massive slabs of meat in a signature ‘Beef Case.’ Inspired by the Marsellus Wallace briefcase in Pulp Fiction, the Beef Case is like bottle service for a steak. When someone orders a $1,000 55-ounce Wagyu Tomahawk, they get a 60-second show with sparklers, an entrance song, lasers, all to present the slab of meat in a gold-lined bedazzled briefcase.” Manilow Dethrones the King He’s never going to loom as large over Las Vegas as Elvis Presley still does. But Barry Manilow has beaten one of the King’s famous records. After 38 years of headlining the showroom that Elvis built, Manilow—a Grammy, Tony, and Emmy winner with 12 US No. 1 singles—officially broke the King’s record by performing his 637th show at the Westgate this summer. Slow and steady won this race for the man who writes the songs (except for that song, which was written by Beach Boys member Bruce Johnston). Manilow, 80, took more than five times the seven years it took Presley to log 636 consecutive sold-out shows at what was first known as the International Hotel, and then the Las Vegas Hilton, from 1969 to 1976. The original location remains in place 73 years later; Junior’s has three other locations, two in Times Square and the other at Foxwoods. This one will land across from Randy’s Donuts in a 300-seat room. Junior’s is renowned for the best cheesecake in the city and beyond. It’s also a full-service deli and New Yorkstyle diner, with a huge menu of breakfast items and soups, salads, sandwiches, steaks, seafood, barbecue, and chef’s specialties. Turkeys, Sinkies and Vets “We can’t all be heroes; someone has to sit on the curb and clap as the veterans parade by.” — Roy Rogers Most Americans consume 105 pounds of turkey per year. That means you have the rest of November and December to reach your quota. Ben Franklin called them birds of bad moral character. My father agreed and would not eat turkey under any circumstances. Therefore, the only turkey my family ate was at someone else’s house and we didn’t miss its absence. Did you know wild turkeys can fly short distances at up to 55 miles/hour; but grocery store turkeys are bred to provide more meat with large breasts that hinder flying. Turkeys have over 20 vocalizations including a distinctive gobble by males that can be heard a mile away; females make a clicking noise almost like a purr. Tom turkeys have more warts than their female counterparts who weigh half as much as males. Score two points for all lady turkeys. Anyway, whether a turkey fan or not, Thanksgiving is a time to remember all for which we are thankful. And as my annual tradition dictates, I say thank you to my Bingo Bugle publisher, those who include my column in their monthly Bugles, to the staff who run the bingos, and to my faithful readers like my #1 fans Chris and

I prepare my plate, usually head for the couch, and eat while seated. Admittedly, his crumbs and debris do hit the sink while mine fall into my lap but standing to eat is not my cup of tea. I think he does it to annoy me and it works. For those sinkies who like midnight snacks, this habit might be forgiven on Thanksgiving evening. The yummy leftovers are in your fridge, Daylight Savings Time ended on November 5, so you have an extra hour to eat! Then, put your dirty utensils in the sink and no one has to watch your eating acrobatic balancing act. Don’t forget Veterans Day is November 11, a federal holiday that honors ALL who have served in the United States military in war or peace; living or dead. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing. Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received. Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize. Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month’s contest. Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing. By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize. The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check. Please, don’t call the Bingo Bugle office to find out who the winner is, we won’t tell you. And, if it is you, you will be disqualified.
