Friends of Butler Library to Host Bingo Nights at Frontier Park
Residents throughout the Butler area are invited to enjoy an exciting season of bingo, raffles, food, and community fun as the Friends of Butler Library prepare to host a series of family-friendly Bingo Nights to benefit the Butler Public Library.
The popular fundraising events will take place at Frontier Park, located at 5251 North 127th Street, Butler, Wisconsin 53007. Organizers are planning seven special Saturday events throughout the year, giving community members multiple opportunities to gather together for an evening of entertainment while helping support important library programs and services.
Scheduled Bingo Night dates include June 20th, July 11th, August 1st, Sep-
tember 26th, October 3rd, November 7th, and December 19th. Each event is expected to feature a welcoming atmosphere designed for players of all ages, from experienced bingo enthusiasts to families simply looking for a fun night out in the community. Doors will open at 4 p.m., allowing guests time to find seats, enjoy refreshments, and purchase raffle tickets before the games begin. The first bingo session will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by a second session at 7 p.m. Throughout the evening, players will compete for a variety of exciting cash prizes during the bingo games.
In addition to bingo, attendees will also have chances to win through 50/50 raffles and themed gift basket raffles, which
organizers say have become a favorite attraction at many local fundraising events. A variety of food and refreshments will also be available for purchase during the evening, making the events a complete night of affordable family entertainment.
The Friends of Butler Library are also encouraging attendees to support local families in need by bringing nonperishable food donations for the St. Agnes Food Pantry. Collected items will help stock the pantry and provide assistance to area residents facing food insecurity. Organizers hope the additional charitable effort will further strengthen the community spirit surrounding the events.
Library supporters say the Bingo Nights are more than just a fundraiser. The
events are intended to bring neighbors together while helping provide funding for educational programming, children’s activities, community outreach, materials, and future events offered through the Butler Library.
Community members are encouraged to invite family, friends, and neighbors to attend one or all of the scheduled Bingo Nights. Whether guests come for the chance to win cash prizes, enjoy the raffles, support the food pantry, or simply spend time with others in the community, organizers say everyone is welcome at Frontier Park for an evening of fun and fellowship benefiting a great local cause.

I play Bingo twice a week. There are five of us that buy pull tabs, weekly. We never ask if a big one is won. We enjoy pulling them open. People who complain probably don’t have extra cash to spend. I always say, “Only gamble with money you can lose.” Thanks for listening.

Would you please, please, PLEASE run an item in your column asking people to be a bit more considerate and watch their
language at Bingo? A woman I sat near the other night cussed like a sailor all evening. Every time a number was called that she did not like, she uttered a very loud profanity. At the end of each game, when she did not win, she could be counted on to state a good half dozen dirty words.
How can she not be aware that her language is inappropriate anywhere, and certainly unacceptable in the mixed company of a Bingo hall?

Not long ago I happened to come across a student newspaper from a local college and decided to read a few stories and see what students were talking about. I was amazed to find the “f” word and the “s” word peppered throughout the paper in quote after quote. It seemed so childish, as if the reporters were determined to include “dirty” words whenever they could under the guise of journalistic freedom, when all it really seemed to be was an excuse to print those words. I support freedom of expression as much as the next person, either spoken or in print. But there is a line between free expression and just plain offensive language which people need to be far more sensitive about.
In the case of your fellow Bingo player, it’s a bit tricky. Do you say something to her and risk a barrage of foul language directed at you? Do you complain to management? Or do you do what you did—write a letter asking a national columnist to address the issue on your behalf? In this case, I’m glad you decided on the latter. But the manager might still have to come into play.

Protecting Your Benefits
On a recent National Slam the Scam Day for 2026, the VA stepped up, along with other federal agencies, with an array of information to keep veterans safe from scams and fraud. Thieves don’t just work one day per year, however. We need to stay vigilant all year long to protect our benefits and personal information from getting to the scammers.
Why do they want us? Because we have income and benefits. How do they approach us? Phone calls, emails, text messages, social media, phishing, impersonation, fake charities — you name it, the crooks have thought of it as a way to get to us.
If you’re approached, whether on the phone or in email, the more urgent the problem, the more likely it’s a scam. A scammer might pretend to be from the VA and try to claim there’s something wrong with your benefits — and that you need to hand over your
personal information so they can “fix” the problem. They might want your bank account access info or password, your Social Security number, your date of birth. The answer is no.
Don’t do a direct deposit into another person’s account — even if it’s a relative! If you need a fiduciary situation (where someone helps you with finances), have that person go through the accreditation process and be authorized to assist you. You’re protected that way.
If you’re told you need to hand over a fee to get claims assistance from the VA or to apply for increased benefits, it’s fraud.
Invest in a shredder and use it to cut up not only VA documents with personal information on them, but any documents, even when you put out the trash.
If someone calls and claims to be from the VA and asks you to pay for something with a gift card or bitcoin, feel free to laugh as you hang up the phone. It’s an impostor. Report it to the VA at 800-827-1000.
PICKS OF THE MONTH
Send Help (R) — Director Sam Raimi, who has quite the range with films like the Spider-Man and Evil Dead trilogies, went back to horror for this new survival thriller starring Rachel McAdams (Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.) and Dylan O’Brien (Anniversary). McAdams plays a corporate strategist named Linda, who gets passed over for a promotion by her boss Bradley (O’Brien) for his fraternity brother. After attempting to get him to change his mind, Linda is offered a seat on his plane to Bangkok for a business trip. However, their plane crashes in the Gulf of Thailand during a storm, and the only survivors are her and Bradley. With their dynamic now turned on its head, Bradley is forced to rely on Linda’s insane survival skills to get them off the island. (Apple TV+)
The Moment (R) — This mockumentary film is a satire of British pop artist Charli XCX’s life. The version of Charli XCX in this film is very similar to the one we know, who smashed the charts during summer 2024 with her Brat album, but viewers get a behindthe-scenes look at the chaotic tail end of her album cycle. After getting hit with shady brand deals
and being forced to work with an objectifying and pretentious filmmaker named Johannes (Alexander Skarsgard), Charli is at her wit’s end with a project that she now considers “cringe” but must continue to promote. Other celebrities that make cameos in the mockumentary include Kylie Jenner (The Kardashians), Julia Fox (Him) and Rachel Sennott (I Love LA). (YouTube)
Bait (TV-MA) — This thriller/ drama/comedy series not only stars Riz Ahmed (The Phoenician Scheme), but it was written by him as well. Ahmed plays Shah Latif, an up-and-coming actor in London who lands his big break as the new James Bond. Now thrust immediately into the spotlight, Shah struggles with the difficult disadvantages of fame, like paparazzi and internet comments, which send him into a bit of an existential crisis. The series feels like a character study on what it’s like to suddenly wake up as a celebrity in modern times. All six episodes are out now to stream. (Amazon Prime Video)

Exciting Times at Speed Bingo
Kate loves to play Speed Bingo. The one she likes best lets you choose one or more hard cards. You put chips in the pot according to the number of cards you have and then numbers are called at
a very fast rate; I think there are only three seconds between calls. None are repeated. You win when you have five good numbers on any card. It is incredibly fast and furiously exciting. I play only one card, which is enough for me. Kate likes to play two cards and once tried three, though even she had to admit it was too much.
We frequently play Speed Bingo before our regular Bingo session, just as a warmup. Recently, I had a very good card, which is all you need to win any Bingo game. We may pretend that lucky charms, special daubers, a particular seat or playing rituals make a difference, but actually it is the card that wins or loses.
I had this very good card and was up for winning. Several times I was on when the Bingo was called, the winner receiving the entire contents of the pot. Then I started winning, just as a fit of hiccups struck. It sounded pretty funny
to the assembled players and they laughed uproariously when I yelled, “Bin-hic-go.”
I did not have time to think about having hiccups or try any of the cures people have supplied me with over the years. A new game started, and I hiccupped and continued playing. Some people laughed so hard they couldn’t play and claimed unfair advantage. I don’t personally think there is anything that funny in a hiccup but had no time to debate the issue.
Kate switched cards during the brief interval between games. She had already tried to talk me out of mine without success. She brought me a drink of water—no help. In spite of my handicap I won again and now had a nice pile of chips in front of me. Kate started borrowing to ante. I did not care. I was too busy trying not to hiccup. I held my breath, drank from the wrong side of the glass, tried to think of something else, and won again.
“Unfair,” said Kate softly as she snagged a handful of my chips. I hiccupped again and felt my rib muscles getting sore. “I know what you need,” she said. “You need a good scare.”
“So, scare me,” I replied. “No, not yet. I’m ready for you. You have to sneak up on me.”
The fast games were over, and we prepared to go to the regular hall for Bingo. I was still hiccupping when Kate suddenly dropped my chips all over and we started scrambling to pick them up. They seemed to go everywhere. Some other players helped but I was afraid I was losing more with their help. I stretched and found one that had rolled under a stool and stood up triumphantly. “Now try not to drop them again,” I instructed her.

Bingo Machines Under Fire
Dear Guy,
Am I being cheated? I play Bingo at the AAIC on Sunday’s usually every week.
The manager allows anyone who purchases a $14 pack to buy a separate $20 machine with 45 games of the $1,000 Coverall and 45 games of $250 Odd/ Even games. I have purchased the extra games too.
games (Coverall and Odd/Even) we have to do better than 2,500 to 5,000 to win the Coverall? Is that fair and legal?
I am old and slow, so I only dab one paper pack and don’t win.
I hope I have explained my question plainly enough. Can the manager separate games and sell them in machines to all that play. Odds in getting the $1,000 win, not good.

Arizona strictly regulates technological aids to Bingo, known informally as Bingo machines (different from electronic bingo gambling devices, which function like a slot machine and are illegal).
It does appear from my research that it is legal for bingo halls to require a minimum buy-in in order to purchase the use of a bingo device in Arizona. If you are able to purchase and play all of the same
of being a winner as any other card face, I can’t see that the hall is cheating.
Over the years, we’ve seen many players weigh in on the use of these devices, many of whom, like you, feel they are unfair. Statistically bingo players who use the devices often have better odds of winning because they can play, and easily monitor, more cards than a player daubing paper, with the added bonus that they won’t miss a bingo because they are alerted of a winning card. On the flip side, while the machines have better odds, they are often more expensive to play.
The fact that you feel you can’t win, however, might be taking some of the fun out of your favorite game. Perhaps you might, on occasion, play bingo at a different hall—one that does not offer machines. You can meet new folks, support a different organization and maybe, if you’re lucky, yell “Bingo!” —Guy

When You’re Losing
This situation has faced every player that has played blackjack in casinos. You memorize the basic strategy, and yet, here you sit, losing hand after hand. You’re playing “by the book” but no matter what cards you get, the dealer somehow manages to beat you. So, what should you do?
This is, regrettably, a condition faced by all blackjack players at some time or another. Unfortunately, too many players that find themselves in this dilemma do some crazy things, which they often regret afterwards such as:
• Increasing their bets believing they are due to win the next hand and recoup their losses.
• Switching to playing two hands to change the “flow of the cards.
• Changing their playing strategy thinking it will change their luck.
• Blaming the dealer or fellow players for their losses.
• Borrowing more cash (usually from an ATM machine) to keep playing, because their luck is bound to change.
Trust me when I say that doing any of the above will not change your luck. In fact, “steaming” by betting more can put you into a deeper financial hole and it is one of the cardinal sins of gambling.
Let’s look at the reality of playing blackjack to see why we can get beat on any given day even though we play with perfect strategy. First off, the math says you will only win 48% of your hands and lose 52% than vice versa (this disregards the 9% of the hands that push). So, on average, you have less than a 50% chance of winning any hand in blackjack.
Mathematicians can calculate the range of how much we can expect to win or lose for any average bet and number of hands played in blackjack. For example, if you bet $5 a hand and play about 200 hands of blackjack (about 2 to 3 hours) with perfect basic strategy, you can expect that in 95% of your playing sessions, you will wind up either ahead up to $164, or behind up to $176 (that’s
a spread from -$176 to +$164). Notice that the spread is skewed more to the losing side (-$176) than to the winning side (+$164) because even with basic strategy, the casino has the edge.
So, what’s my point? The game of blackjack has a variance associated with it, which means we can sometimes wind up losing more hands in a row than we’d like through no fault of our own. This is the nature of the game. We don’t like it, but there isn’t much we can do about it.
Here is the best advice I can offer recreational players when you are losing hand after hand. Hopefully you have set a session loss limit and when you reach that loss limit, you’ve got to quit playing and take a break (if it’s a day trip, you should head home). You need some quiet time to think about what just happened, and ask yourself whether you played accurately, because if you are not sure, that could be a major factor as to why you lost. There are several good blackjack software training programs that keep track of your playing accuracy and alert you when you make a playing mistake (it also tells you what the right play is). The point is, be sure you are playing accurately.
The next thing to consider is whether or not there were any distractions while you were playing that could have caused you to make playing mistakes. My wife, for example, is an excellent blackjack player but she gets upset when a fellow player makes a dumb play. She never says anything to the player, but it affects her emotionally and it could cause her to lose concentration and misplay her hand. Perhaps a fellow player becomes obnoxious, or the dealer is a grouch—any number of factors could cause you to lose your focus when you play. My advice if this happens is to get off that table and play at another table where you feel more comfortable and can concentrate.
The most important thing to keep in mind when you find yourself losing hand after hand through no fault of your own is to keep your cool and understand these losing sessions can and will happen. Increasing your bets, digging in your pocket for more money, and playing longer hoping that your luck will change is a recipe for disaster and should be avoided.
No matter how well you play blackjack, you are not immune to losing streaks, and sooner or later you are going to take your lumps. The key is to be prepared for this scenario beforehand and know what to do when it happens. In a nutshell, get off the table when you reach your stop loss and play another day, when, hopefully, Lady Luck and the cards will be kinder to you.

Fremont Street Experience free summer concerts have returned. They kicked off in May with country artists Lee Brice, Austin Williams and Grace Tyler, who took the FSE stages in conjunction with the Academy of Country Music awards show at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Upcoming events scheduled include: Fuel June 13, Finger Eleven June 27, George Birge July 4, Sleeping with Sirens July 11, Mayday Parade Aug. 8, Story of the Year Aug. 22, and Maggie Lindemann Oct. 10, all Saturdays.
Late-Night Dining
Bellagio has introduced weekend late-night dining at two of its fancy restaurants overlooking the lake. From 10:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Lago now serves up food from a special late-night menu. If you have a hankering for hamachi, carpaccio, Caesar salad, puttanesca pizza, chocolate budino, and the like at 2 a.m., head to Lago. You can see the menu online. In May, Yellowtail, the Japanese restaurant, also added the same late-night hours as Lago, serving crisp tofu, gyoza, rock shrimp, sushi rolls, a bento box, and desserts, according to the Review-Journal
Million Dollar Jackpot
A local player hit a jackpot for $1,689,909 in April on an Aristocrat Gaming slot, Dollar Storm, at The Resort at Summerlin. The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, won the grand prize on a $30 spin.

Tasting table recently posted a story “20 iconic dishes” served in Las Vegas restaurants. The writeups are informed and informative; worth scrolling through to see what you’ve missed, mostly because the picks are at expensive Strip restaurants, such as StripSteak,

Megabucks Hit
The Megabucks Triple Red Hot 7s Spitfire Multipliers jackpot for $10,486,432 was hit at Mandalay Bay on April 1st. It wasn’t an April Fools hoax and the player, who wished to remain anonymous, bet the max $5 to qualify for the jackpot.
Digital Sistine Chapel Exhibition
Another immersive “digital museum” is on its way to Las Vegas. This one reproduces all 34 of the 500-plus-year-old frescoes painted by Michelangelo Buonarroti on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in Rome. Life-size representations of Michelango’s famous sculptures, David, Moses, and Pietà, are also part of the display. The 25,000-squarefoot attraction is on the third floor of the Shops at Crystals at CityCenter in the space that previously hosted two “Immersive Van Gogh” attractions, which is next to the “Princess Diana & The Royals” museum; the Sistine Chapel attraction comes from the same team. Tickets start at $32 and are available online.

Sweet, sweet June with its weddings, picnics, gardens, and flowers in full bloom. Decades ago, in our family, that meant we kids could go barefoot and wear shorts after Memorial Day. Later, as a teacher, it meant a month or two of relaxation before gearing up for another year of molding young minds. My pals and I played hide and seek after dark and chased fireflies in the fields around us. Afterward, I’d go to bed in the upstairs of our farmhouse and sweat profusely even with window fans going full blast. No air conditioning—but my family and I survived.
June is the start of family reunions and get togethers. I recently learned a cool game to play at these events. It’s a variation of bingo called Hillbilly Bingo, who knows why. This version uses standard playing cards instead of bingo balls and cards and each player needs his own deck of cards. Each player shuffles his personal deck and places the top ten cards face up in front of himself. A designated caller draws cards from a master deck and announces the rank and suit (example: king of spades). A player
who has that exact card in his/ her face-up pile flips it face down. When a player has only one faceup card left, he/she must shout aloud Uno, meaning one card left, or Ready. Failure to do so means that player must take the next card from his deck and add it faceup to his remaining one. The first player to flip all 10 of his/her cards yells Yeehaw! Or Bingo! or Hot Damn which is my personal favorite and that player wins that round. Card decks are then reshuffled, another ten cards placed face up, and the next round begins with 8-10 rounds being the usual.
Before starting play, each participant contributes a set amount of money to build the pot with the amount depending on the crowd— but is usually five or ten dollars per player; meaning the pot can grow quite large. Before starting play, take half of the collected money for the last round and that will be the jackpot win for the final game of the last round. Divide the rest of the money by the number of games and that amount goes to the other individual round winners. This game can be played for prizes, more or less money to buy in, or just for fun with no money or prizes, but what fun is that says the gambler I am? In some versions, the caller announces the first four cards drawn as wild. If you have any of those cards (regardless of suit), you get to flip them over immediately which speeds up the game. Hillbilly Bingo will never replace the real bingo games we’re used to playing, but it does have its own charm, especially if you’re looking for something different to generate interaction at a family event. Just remember to alert everyone to bring a deck or two of cards so everyone who wants to participate can play.
