Waukesha. He loves it. You can find him there for most Bingo sessions with his daughter Aimee, Linda and Ann. We heard some stories about Jim’s antics at Bingo and at work that were hilarious. You could easily consider Jim to be the consumate prankster. He’s so good at it that people don’t realize that they’ve been pranked until its too late. His jokes are all in good fun and everybody eventually gets a good laugh out of it. Before he retired, Jim was a Quality Inspector at RockTenn Packaging Products. Then, in retirement he delivered flowers. He brought a lot of joy to the people who received those flowers. Since he’s such a good natured fellow we asked him if he had any advice for his fellow Bingo players. He sure did, “Just have a Good Time, no matter if you win or loose, its all about the people after all”! That sounds great, good advice for all of us Bingo players. Not so fast, was his daughter’s message,

A Winning Year From Aunt Bingo’s Archive

Dear Aunt Bingo: My friends and I decided this past fall that we were going to start the New Year right—by winning a big Bingo jackpot sometime before the end of January. We figured it was great way to kick off 2018 and set in motion what we dubbed our “Year of Big-Ass Winning.” Plus, we knew that Bingo attendance got lighter during the winter, which also could boost our odds of winning sooner rather than later. The plan was to make it through the holidays and then do a team Bingo marathon right after New Year’s. We would hit a bunch of small Bingo games as well as make a few casino trips. The goal was to score a win of $500 or more, which we would split four ways between us, and set in motion what we were confident would be lots more Bingo prizes in the months to come. Something about this New Year’s plan got our Bingo juices flowing, however, and we found ourselves getting a jump on our plans by going to considerably more Bingo much sooner than expected. We had a copy of your newspaper, and each time we met for Bingo we’d go through the directory and plot our next trip. An added bit of fun was picking games we’d never been to in other parts of town, which made us feel adventurous. When we branched out to new neighborhoods we also scoped the areas for little local diners and restaurants to try out. It led us to some amazing food— Thai, Vietnamese, Polish and other nationalities. It was really fun. We’re all pretty budget conscious and stuck with the smaller games, but by mid-November we were itching to hit one of the upstate New York casinos. We went with the closest one, piled into the car and were off. Following our now usual pattern, we went early and had lunch at one of the casino bistros before

JANUARY 2024 heading to the Bingo room. The Bingo games were mid-session, so we went for a walk through the other gaming areas while we waited the 30 minutes before the next session started. My friend Lisa wanted to do the slots, so we gathered around her to watch her play. On her third spin, the bells and whistles went off: Just like that she won $350! “Bingo’s on me!” she shouted, and we all cheered. We still had a few minutes to kill, and the excitement of Lisa’s slots win was more than enough for us all to take a seat at another bank of slots and play for a bit. It was getting close to the time to leave for Bingo, and I gave my slot machine one more spin. Bing Bing Bing! I won $200! My friend Elaine clapped her hands and chanted: “The Year of Big-Ass Winning, the Year of BigAss Winning!” and we all laughed and began chanting with her. It was a little early, but we weren’t going to complain. With two slots wins under our belts, none of us had particularly high hopes of walking away with any of the casino’s Bingo money, but we were all having a good time and headed to the Bingo room nonetheless. The room was pretty full, but we did our buy-in and found some decent seats near the caller. We chatted and daubed away for a half-dozen games or so, when Lisa got quiet. “Guys, I’m one away in two spots,” she whispered as we were playing through a triple Bingo. “Get out, we’ve barely started,” I said, thinking she was just kidding around. “I mean it. Look!” Sure enough, she had daubed practically every number called so far. “The Year of Big-Ass Winning, the Year of Big-Ass Winning…!” Elaine began saying, and we all started chanting again. “Bingo!” The caller finally called O-61, one of Elaine’s numbers. We all cheered. We were about to split $1,350! Our plan had been to make 2018 the Year of Big-Ass Winning, but 2017 apparently had other ideas. Thank you, 2017! JJ, New York Share your views! Veterans Legacy Memorial Expanded The Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) website now contains the names of 10 million veterans who are buried across the country. Those locations include the national cemeteries, DOD cemeteries, National Park Service national cemeteries, and now civilian and non-VA cemeteries are also included. Earlier this year the site indicated that only veterans would be listed, not their spouses. However, I’ve just now found the mother of a good friend; she is buried with her veteran husband at Arlington National. Veterans Legacy Memorial website (www.vlm.cem.va.gov) is quite an undertaking. Each veteran has an individual page that includes a bio with branch of service, dates of birth and death, war period, rank, decorations and more. Family and friends can upload stories, photos and

PICKS OF THE MONTH Minions: The Rise of Gru (PG) — Steve Carell’s grouchy, yet lovable supervillain, Gru, first appeared on the big screen in 2010 during the box-office sensation Despicable Me. The film quickly evolved into the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time, and Minions: The Rise of Gru was no different than its predecessors, garnering close to $1 billion. Starring Carell as Gru and Pierre Coffin as the minions, the latest film in the franchise takes us back to 1976 where an 11-year-old Gru dreams of becoming a supervillain. But with ambitions as high as Gru’s, he can’t go it alone and will need to find some assistance — specifically in the form of a yellow banana-loving species of creatures. Out now. (Peacock) The World to Come (R) — Winner of the 2020 Queer Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival, this drama film taking place in 1856 New York stars Katherine Waterson (Fantastic Beasts) and Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) as two respectively married women who feel severe isolation in the farmlands they live in. Both being married to emotionally lacking men, and being devoid

This documentary, which features tons of archival footage and interviews with his family and other musicians, dives into his legacy and explores his influence as a Black queer icon. It also touches on how he inspired other artists of his time and the many eras of music yet to come. The film depicts a very nuanced story that centers on the fact that Little Richard “was an omni being who contained multitudes — he was unabashedly everything.” Out now. Shin Min for the Bingo Win Kate loves New Year’s Eve like no other holiday. She carefully hoards fireworks from the 4th of July to shoot off on New Year’s Eve and puts on a show for the neighborhood, starting about ten when it is clearly my bedtime. There is great whooping and hollering from the neighbors as they help her celebrate and she does love it. On New Year’s Day itself, we usually celebrate with Cliff and Rod. They take us to breakfast at the casino and then we play Bingo until we are worn out. Casino

JANUARY 2024 breakfasts are marvelous affairs and on this particular day they usually have a buffet with every goodie imaginable. We fill up and then find a Bingo game. Today they played in the biggest room and it was full. We quickly found seats with our friend and fellow Bingo fan, Shin Min. He is from Lanzhou, China, where he became an acupuncturist and then emigrated to the U.S. He is a charming man and I love to get acupuncture from him, but I don’t go to him often as he won’t let me pay and that bothers me. I have tried to talk to him about paying but he is adamant—he will not accept money from close friends. What a joy it was to see him on New Year’s Day. Shin Min was having a lucky day. He won the first game and seemed always to be on when he

When intermission came, Shin Min insisted on treating us as he had been winning, but I was still full from breakfast. He politely asked if he might take us to dinner after the games and we happily accepted, knowing he would want to stay in the casino. After intermission we continued playing; I was wondering how all 38 of my cards could be so unlucky when Shin Min was playing with only 8 cards and winning consistently. He became embarrassed and almost missed one win, but I finally convinced him not to feel bad about winning. That’s just how it goes. The final blackout was preceded by what was called “the bell.” That was the top N, the second I and G, the third B and O, the fourth I and G and the bottom N. Since it was a blackout, the trick was to keep track of the pattern, but Shin Min was very good at this and he won, of course. Rod was beginning to be a little resentful of all the time I was giving our friend, so I snuggled up close to him at dinner just to let him know how important he is in my life. “Well,” he said. “What’s this about?” “Nothing special—just letting you know how much you mean to me and wishing you the happiest of New Year’s.”

I had gotten a machine with 38 pre-programmed cards so I didn’t have much to do except watch for wins. That’s the reason I don’t often get machines—they do all the work and you just sit there and monitor the results.

JANUARY 2024 but I really love that number. And, once every five years or so, when I Bingo on that number, I get the chance to stand up and cheer. Back when I was able play every night—when I lived in Las Vegas—I started naming all the balls. I just wonder how many reading this column have a favorite number or have given a Bingo ball a nickname. Well, let us know at bobonbingo@earthlink.net. Some of the numbered balls I’ve named: I-23: I always called I-23 “the cutie.” Again, I’m not sure why, but it IS cute. It kinda looks like “12-3.” I have always thought that I-26 was the most-hated number in Bingo. I got that idea from a friend. One night he needed I-26 to win in three consecutive games. All three

times he didn’t win. Good old B-1 is, as far as I am concerned, “The Leading Lady.” I got that idea from a great uncle who was a well-known Bingo caller in southern Illinois. I think I’ve mentioned B-1 before. Of course, N-32 is “the freezer.” G-47 is, for me, “the birthday ball,” since I was born in 1947. I have nicknamed B-4 as the “history ball.” That’s because history is what came “B-4” the current time. Just a few more: N-39 is the Jack Benny Ball. (Think about that one). O-65 is the Retirement Ball. Finally, I had a friend who, every time B-9 was called, he would yell, “Be nice!” By the way, this same guy— let’s call him Nicky—had a rare knack of being able to predict the

BINGO BUGLE PAGE 5 numbers before the balls were turned around on camera. I think I mentioned him in a column a long time ago. I finally realized that many of the balls needed cleaning and were rather recognizable, almost as if they were “marked.” Once a new set of balls replaced the old ones, he no longer had ESP when it came to the numbers. Back to my numbers game. I remember that years ago I went nuts trying to come up with funny names for each and every number. I vaguely remember having a Kate Smith ball and a ball named for Guy Lombardo. But, in the long run, any number can be the BEST number of all… IF you WIN on that number…and even better if you don’t have to share it.

Bad Behavior at Bingo Hi Readers: Previous letters in this column from players who were bullied or accused of cheating because they were winners resulted in quite a few others writing in to share similar stories. Two of these letters follow. If you’ve experienced this yourself, please tell us about it at: Guy’s Turn, P.O. Box 527, Vashon WA 98070. —Guy Hi Guy, You ran a letter from a Bingo player who was suspected by his fellow players of somehow cheating because he had a series of wins. I witnessed something quite similar, when a group of jealous players “went after” a young woman who

Bingoed three times at the same hall over two weeks (two Tuesday nights). Her wins weren’t big—I think it was less than $300 total— but a table of regulars was beside themselves that she was apparently taking “their” money. One of the women did this fake cough thing where she coughed very loudly as she said the word “cheat,” then did it a second time with the word “cow.” Other players sitting around her grinned and laughed quietly at these antics. I was truly shocked that people would behave this way, motivated, I am sure, by jealousy and envy. Their behavior did not go unnoticed by the winner it was directed toward, either. But she took the high road and ignored their taunts and gave a big smile when she received her payout. You should also know that there were other people in the hall that night that did not go along with the “mean girls” and were clearly unhappy with how they behaved. Several of us had a word with the person in charge after Bingo ended. He said that he hadn’t been aware of what happened, thanked us for bringing it to his attention and promised to monitor it in the future. —LG, California Hi Guy, Thank you for running the letter from the winner who was harassed by other players. not necessarily that a winner was thought to be cheating, but just because they won a pot that someone else was close to winning. The worst behavior I ever saw was a woman who threw a grand tantrum during the last game of the session, when someone else won the final coverall. I kid you not: She slammed her hands on the table, yelled a four-letter word three times, stood up and kicked her chair, scooped up her Bingo paper and tore it to shreds, then grabbed her coat and Bingo things and stormed across the Bingo hall and out the door—making sure to pass by the winner on her way out and throwing her crumpled Bingo paper toward her.

The entire room of people watched this whole performance in silent shock! I heard later that this same woman showed up again the following week. Fortunately, the Bingo hall took action and banned her from the games. One of my friends who was there said the woman—who we nicknamed Tantrumella—acted all surprised and insulted that she was banned, but at least didn’t make a scene. —Shocked and Amazed in Nevada

Facts on Becoming a Blackjack Dealer I often get inquiries from players who are interested in becoming blackjack dealers. What follows is an excerpt I conducted a few years ago with Nick Kallos, owner of the Casino Gaming Schools of Nevada. Nick’s answers pertain to dealing in Las Vegas; in other gambling jurisdictions, the requirements may be slightly different. Nevertheless, the Q&A gives you some idea on what’s involved in becoming a blackjack dealer. Are there any requirements to be a dealer? The minimum age to deal in a casino in Nevada is 21. Prospective dealers will undergo a background check, which varies from casino to casino. Generally, they expect the prospective dealer to be drugfree (they will be tested), have no jail time and have their finances in order (no major debts). Once a dealer is hired, they apply for a gaming card, which costs $75 and is valid for 7 years. How long does it take to complete a course in your school?

It depends on the game. Blackjack, for example, is one of the easiest games to deal, and typically students complete their training (100 hours) in 3 to 6 weeks or less. Craps and roulette are more complicated games and it usually takes a student 6 weeks to complete the training. Poker is very popular, and we teach a 5-week course (100 hours) on how to deal poker that includes Omaha High/Low, Stud and Hold’Em. Once a student completes his training, how does he or she get a job? The student has to audition with a casino that has an opening. How the student performs during the audition is what determines whether or not they get the job. That’s why I conduct two live, mock auditions with all of my students– one with their lead instructor and if the student passes, a final audition with me. I also give students feedback on their performance to better prepare them for the real world. Are the stories about high rollers occasionally tipping dealers thousands of dollars true? Yes. For example, a few years ago a player tipped as much as $250,000 per day over the three days he stayed at a high-end Strip casino. Dealers call players who tip large amounts of money “King Georges.” What makes a person a successful casino dealer? Their personality and attitude are the keys. Successful dealers are well groomed in their appearance, friendly, helpful, have a positive attitude, interact well with players, and are happy to be a dealer. Casinos figure that dealer’s skills at dealing will always improve. What they look for is the package: a pleasant individual with a good attitude and the ability to deal. If they have these characteristics it will show in their job performance and result in a positive playing experience for players.

Say It Ain’t So The Las Vegas ReviewJournal recently reported that the last of the great bargain casinos in southern Nevada, Emerald Island and the Rainbow Club in downtown Henderson, are being sold. Emerald Island has been owned by the Brooks brothers, Mike and Tim, since 2003 and the Rainbow Club since 2020 and the two are beloved among Henderson locals for their dizzying array of comps, contests, giveaways, and promotions, plus Cheer’s-type customer service and a decidedly hands-on Tim Brooks, who says he spends 75% of his time on the casino floor and knows 1,000 regular customers by name. The buyer is Las Vegasbased ECL Gaming, which owns and operates multiple historical horse racing venues in Kentucky. In a statement, ECL said it plans to maintain the existing company culture and “add to the guest experience as we continue to expand and grow the properties.” Uh-oh. We hate to say it and don’t want to jinx it, but in our experience, “enhancing the guest experience” is often code for enhancing owner/ shareholder value. The terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed, but the sale is expected to close this January.

Californian Hits Big A gambler at the Cromwell in Vegas won $1,155,366 by hitting a Mega Progressive jackpot on Face Up Pai Gow Poker. The California Pai Gow player was in town to attend the Raiders game (they beat the Jets 16-12) and hit the progressive on his second hand at the table. High-Speed Train Moves Ahead The federal Surface Transportation Board recently issued a 21-page ruling that authorizes a modified alignment of the track between southern California and Las Vegas, moving the $12 billion project another step closer to fruition. In its coverage of the ruling, RailwayAge.com reported not seen before numbers: “According to the STB, current plans are to operate 50 trains per day (25 in each direction) between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga; trains will depart from both Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga at 45-minute intervals and operate at speeds up to 180 miles per hour.”

A zombie outbreak could be avoided if dead people were buried with their shoelaces tied together. –pininterest.com January 1st is New Year’s Day but is also Z Day. When I saw it mentioned somewhere, the first thing that came to mind was that it was meant to celebrate all things zombie as in the recent plethora of zombie movies, books, and TV shows. I love all things zombie; two favorites being the movies Night of the Living Dead and World War Z. Night of the Living Dead came out in 1968 and introduced flesh-eating ghouls that became synonymous with the term zombie. The story follows seven people in rural Pennsylvania who are trapped in a farmhouse under assault by slow moving reanimated corpses. World War Z was released in 2013 and stars Brad Pitt as a handsome hero hunk who saves our world from hordes of hungry flesh eaters. However, much to my surprise, I discovered that Z Day on the first day of January is not about the walking dead, but instead gives recognition to all persons, places, and things that begin with the letter Z. Alphabetical order is reversed and those whose names begin with the letter Z come first in all matters of alphabet sequence; letters at the front of the alphabet go last. So, if your name is Zelda, Zeke, Zia, etc. this is your opportunity to go to the front of the line. Many years ago, the letter Z was removed from the alphabet because it was

considered useless, but thankfully, it was later reinstated so Zelda, Zeke, and Zia aren’t named Elda, Eke, and Ia. I suggest you celebrate Z Day by treating any friends/family who have Z-names s to Bingo and hopefully start your or their 2024 on a lucky winning streak. As for the rest of 2024, there are a few things you can do to attract good luck and surround yourself with good fortune. Start by filling a bowl with coins, crystals, lottery tickets, and other indicators of wealth. Place the bowl in the southeast corner of your house and await the goodness that comes your way. Next, you need a three-legged toad with a coin in its mouth; an artificial toad, not a real one of course. These toads are readily available online and you should hang the fake toad near your home’s entrance to invite good luck inside. Last but not least, whatever your circumstances, be grateful. Be thankful for what you already have in your life, including family and friends. Count your blessings and visualize more abundance in all areas of your life. Expect good things to happen and do not dwell on negatives. Doing so will bring calm to your soul and peace into your heart. One last thought to ponder. January 31 is National Sdrawkcab Day, translated National Backwards Day. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to celebrate Z Day as well on January 31 or vice versa, celebrate Backwards Day on January 1? On Backwards Day we are to do everything backwards like wearing our clothes that way; similar to the idea of Z Day, so celebrate both together. The Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes contest is open to everyone. It is a FREE contest. Entry forms are usually found on the next to last page of each monthly issue of the Bingo Bugle. Readers who are interested in entering the contest may cut or tear the entry from the paper, fill it out and officially enter by dropping the entry into the plastic Sweepstakes Entries” jug located at most not for profit Bingo halls. Some Bingo halls do not have an entry jug, but usually one the game volunteers will take your entry and get it to us. You may submit a copy of the entry form if none are available to you. If you prefer, your entry may be mailed to: Bingo Bugle Sweepstakes P.O. Box 371283 Milwaukee, WI 53237 If you mail in your entry, only one entry per envelope is accepted. Entry forms must be completely filled out to qualify. Entry forms

that are not completely filled out, do not qualify for the drawing. Enter as many times as you like, but please, take only one Bingo Bugle when you play. A random drawing is conducted each month from all entries received. Winners are announced each month in the Bingo Bugle. Winners must call 327-0705 prior to the 15th of the month in which their name is announced as the winner to claim their prize. Entries received after the drawing are held for the next month’s contest. Your chances of winning are determined by the total number of entries received prior to the drawing. By entering the contest, you grant the Bingo Bulge the exclusive right to use your name, photo and comments for publicity purposes. Winners not making themselves available for a photo will forfiet their prize. The contest is not “progressive,” that is to say, if the winner does not claim the prize prior to the deadline, the prize is not increased. The prize is always $100.00 payable via check. Please, don’t call the Bingo Bugle office to find out who the winner is, we won’t tell you. And, if it is you, you will be disqualified.
