Artwalk
Friday night event showcases local, regional artists Thirty galleries, studios, museums and other venues open their doors for five events during the 21st season of Artwalk Downtown Billings. The season kicked off on May 1; four additional Artwalks are planned for Aug. 7, Oct. 2, Dec. 4 and Feb. 5, 2016. All events are free and run from 5 to 9 p.m. City metered and garage parking are free during Artwalk. Art galleries, studios, museums and other “art-worthy” venues host regular and visiting artists. Several sites offer music and light refreshments. Maps and more information specific to each Artwalk event can be found at www.artwalkbillings.com. Printed maps are available at each participating Artwalk site. Photographs and exhibit information are posted on Facebook.com/billingsartwalk prior to each Artwalk.

Public art
Signal box project continues to decorate downtown The Downtown Billings Alliance and the Public Art Committee launched a traffic signal box wrap program in 2013 to wrap city signal boxes with images of original works of art. The program is in its second phase of projects, and five artists have been selected to have their original art digitally transferred to a vinyl overlay that will be professionally wrapped around each signal box. These chosen artists have a variety of backgrounds and styles — Michael Blessing, Meagan Blessing, Robin Earles, Dione Roberts, and Claire Kleese. In addition to these five projects, the Downtown Billings Alliance is working with the Yellowstone Art Museum to do a children’s art wrap on the traffic signal box in front of the museum. The first two wraps with work by Michael and Meagan Blessing were expected to be installed in April. Michael Blessing’s “The Outliers” will be located at 27th Avenue North and Montana Avenue. Meagan Blessing’s “Day’s End” will be located at 30th Avenue North and Montana Avenue. The remaining projects are anticipated to be wrapped in May and June with locations to be determined. The Traffic Signal Box Wrap movement has become popular in other Montana cities such as
Missoula and Bozeman as a way to enrich the cityscape and reduce graffiti. The vinyl itself is characterized by its sustainability in the elements and its anti-graffiti quality. It is resistant to spray paint, markers, and the damage of adhesives.

Dehler Park to host Downtown Night at the Mustangs Downtown Night at the Mustangs is Downtown Billings’ longest-running event. Join the festivities Monday, July 27, at 7:05 p.m. as the Billings Mustangs play the Great Falls Voyagers. Giveaways and promotions will be featured during the game donated by Downtown
merchants and businesses. Dehler Park has picnic areas for families and large groups, a merchandise shop, and concessions that offer brats, burgers, soft drinks, beer and mojito coolers. Fans can walk the entire field on an outfield terrace, which is home to those who buy standing-
room-only tickets. Tickets can be purchased at the Dehler Park ticket office or by going to www.billingsmustangs. com and clicking on tickets. Dehler Park is renowned in the Pioneer League for the “Beer Batter.” Every game, the Mustangs Beer Boosters designate

Spare Change for Real Change
Program aims to bridge gap between city, public efforts Spare Change for Real Change was created to bridge the gap between the city’s concerted efforts to impact homelessness and alleviate poverty and the public’s participation in those efforts. Through education campaigns and providing an alternative to giving money, Spare Change for Real Change has become an effective program in the effort. This year, SCRC granted $15,000 to Rimrock Foundation and the Community Crisis Center to hire an outreach worker to provide recovery services for people who suffer from alcohol, substance use and co-occurring disorders. Joel Simpson, was hired as a resource outreach coordinator and will serve as an advocate for homeless clients by assisting them with navigating systems of care and accessing services such as housing, employment and treatment. Community Innovations Summit
Billings looks at programs in Texas, California to curb homelessness On Oct. 29, 2014, the Downtown Billings Alliance and the City of Billings hosted a public meeting, Community Innovations Summit, on transiency and public intoxication issues. Leaders from San Antonio and San Diego shared details about their successful service programs and helped our city initiate discussions to help address the issues Billings faces while providing
hope for those who need it most. The next day nearly 100 business leaders, legislators, service providers, and enforcement personnel met for discussion and workshops, beginning the work of developing comprehensive programs to serve a very vulnerable population in Billings. As a result, five committees were created to comprehensively address issues: Program, Legislative,
Enforcement, Native American Coalition, and Funding. These committees meet regularly. In early February 2015, Downtown Resource Officers Matt Lennick and Tony Nichols, together with City leaders, visited San Diego’s Serial Inebriate Program and Homeless Outreach Team. Lennick and Nichols said it was a tremendous experience to see programs in motion,
and the visible outcomes for the at-risk people, as well as for the business sector and community at large. The BMW Motorcycle Owners of America (MOA) is a group with more than 32,000 members, and 7,500 are expected in Billings in July 23-25 for the 43rd Annual BMW MOA International Rally. Riders will converge on MetraPark, the city and region to take in Montana’s bucket list attractions and amenities.

Billings tourism officials had been courting the BMW motorcycle rally for at least four years before the Billings rally was announced in January 2014. “One of the most important things about this type of business is that we’re not strangers to hosting large motorcycle rallies,” said Alex Tyson, executive director of Visit Billings, the tourism marketing arm of Billings Chamber of Commerce. The Honda Gold Wings Road Riders Association held its convention at MetraPark in 1997,
2000 and 2007. In 2006, the Harley-Davidson owners group brought about 10,000 people to Billings, who spent an estimated $6 million. Tyson was part of a Billings contingent that attended the 2014 BMW MOA rally in Roseville, Minn., in the Twin Cities. Over three long days, the Billings representatives fielded questions and handed out maps and literature pertaining to the 2015 rally. Urban blues fest on a new weekend By JACI WEBB jwebb@billingsgazette.com Tim Goodridge has brought more than 150 music acts to Billings and brought people from throughout North America to Billings for what has grown to be a four-day festival with three venues. Buddy Guy, John Fogerty and Lucinda Williams will headline this year’s Magic City Blues Festival July 30 through Aug. 2 in Billings. This year, there will be a few changes to make the festival even more successful and fan-friendly, said Tim Goodridge, concert organizer. Most notably, the dates are changing. After hosting the event on the second weekend of August since its inception, Goodridge moved it to the first weekend in August for a few reasons. In 2001 when Magic City Blues launched, it was the only big music festival happening in the area. Rockin’ the Rivers also started in 2001 and Rockin’ the Railroad started a couple of years ago in Sheridan, Wyo., on that same weekend. Then, there’s Montana Fair, which opens the second weekend of August and often features its night shows that weekend. “I’m a firm believer that you can’t just stick to the same formula every year in entertainment. If you do, you lose your fan base over time,” Goodridge said. MCB is set for July 31-Aug. 2 this year. The festival kicks off again with a free show on July
