Greetings Big Canoe! As fall begins to settle over Big Canoe, the season brings many opportunities to connect with neighbors, enjoy our beautiful surroundings, and take part in the activities that make our community so special. Safety and security remain a top priority for the POA. In this week’s issue, we review the past year’s Call Activity Report from the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. The data provides a clearer picture of safety in our community and reinforces that Big Canoe remains a safe and peaceful place to live. Although Big Canoe is a safe community, we continue to look for opportunities to strengthen our safety and security measures. Property Owners also play an important role by remaining vigilant, securing their homes and vehicles, and promptly reporting suspicious activity. The annual POA Board of Directors election is also quickly approaching. Property Owners must be in good standing as of October 1 to be eligible to participate. Please confirm that all outstanding balances have been paid and that the mailing address listed in your Big Canoe profile is correct, as ballots will be mailed to the address on file. We also encourage everyone to learn more about the candidates by reading their responses in the candidate question-and-answer section of this week’s magazine. Finally, don’t forget to join us for the Fall Festival on Saturday, September 26! SAFETY & SECURITY IN BIG CANOE
Safety and security are essential to the quality of life we value in Big Canoe. While recent conversations may have raised concerns, the clearest understanding of safety within our community comes from data.

A recent review of incidents reported to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office shows that Big Canoe remains a safe and peaceful community, with most calls involving traffic accidents, informational or civil matters, and community assistance—not serious criminal activity.
During the past year (August 2025 - September 2026), one-third of all calls (19 of 56) were traffic accidents, making them the most common incident by a significant margin. Twelve reports (21%) were civil matters or informational matters (social welfare checks), where deputies documented disputes or concerns but no criminal offense occurred. *Note that a report of theft does not necessarily mean an item was taken within the gate of Big Canoe, or taken at all. No community can guarantee incidents will never occur, and we take every report seriously. However, the available data provides important perspective.
Time Period Analyzed: 8/6/2025 to 8/6/2026
According to Chief Deputy Jeff Hall of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, “Serious criminal activity in Big Canoe is uncommon, and the community remains one of the safest and most peaceful places to live in the region. We would be more concerned with wildlife encounters in the community than serious crime.” Maintaining a safe community requires ongoing vigilance and continuous improvement. Big Canoe’s layered approach includes controlled gate access, Public Safety patrols, approximately 135 cameras throughout the community (“more cameras than in all of Pickens County currently, per Deputy Hall”), and close coordination with local law enforcement. Building on these safeguards, the POA is actively implementing additional measures to further strengthen our security. Increasing Public Safety Visibility The Gate Supervisor’s vehicle and the vehicle used by Public Safety personnel when they are not responding in a fire engine will be redecaled with prominent “Big Canoe Public Safety” identification. Both vehicles will also be equipped with light bars to increase their visibility. Living | 5
Because these vehicles regularly travel throughout the community—and one is often stationed near the gates—they will provide a more noticeable Public Safety presence and serve as an additional deterrent. Security-Look Uniforms for Gate Attendants We have ordered new uniforms for all gate attendants. The uniforms will provide a consistent, professional appearance and help reinforce the important security role these employees perform. Additional Security Signage “Area Under Surveillance” signage will be installed in appropriate locations throughout the community to increase awareness and help discourage unwanted activity. Expanded Camera Coverage and Emergency Communication Big Canoe currently has 135 surveillance cameras throughout the property. Additional equipment is being installed, including: Five cameras have been installed to improve parking-lot coverage at the Wellness Center Four cameras will be installed to expand parking and Playfield Park coverage Two Starlink-enabled emergency call boxes at Playfield Park, where cellular reception is limited Additional cameras for other high-traffic areas will also be considered in the 2027 budget process.
Enhanced Incident-Reporting Training We complete an incident report for every Public Safety call. Additional training will reinforce proper documentation and our Public Safety team’s “observe and report” responsibilities. Ongoing Public Safety Communications A series of articles about Public Safety recently began in Big Canoe Living. The first article explained Public Safety’s role and reminded Property Owners to call 911 for any emergency. No community can guarantee incidents will never occur, and we take every report seriously. We must all remain vigilant, look out for one another, and promptly report suspicious activity by calling 911.

JONATHAN FOULKES The most important quality in a leader is trust, and it must run both ways. That means people need to trust you to listen, tell the truth, and stand behind them while holding them to a high standard. And you have to trust them enough to hand over real responsibility and let them do their best work. Trust turns capable individuals into a team that performs, and it is exactly what a community like ours runs on: staff, volunteers, and neighbors working together. When DoubleClick asked me to build its Atlanta engineering office, I recruited people I had worked with before and built a culture of high standards and candor. That team built DartMail, then the world’s largest personalized email platform, and ran it reliably at massive scale. Former members still call it the best job they ever had. Later, at Reed Construction Data, I took on the opposite task: turning around a struggling group by rebuilding accountability without fear or blame. It stabilized, shipped new products, and re-engineered a critical search system to run about ten times faster. Leadership is not about having all the answers. It is about earning enough trust that capable people bring you their best ideas, tell you when they think you’re wrong, and own the results together. CHARLIE ARMSTRONG I believe the top quality of an effective leader is the ability to listen — understanding the real issue, considering different perspectives, and communicating clearly before deciding. During more than 35 years in executive leadership, that principle consistently produced results. At Paramount Pictures, listening closely to production teams revealed what the studio's infrastructure and service were missing. Acting on what I heard helped rebuild trust with the production community and modernize the campus — and within four years, the studio achieved the highest facility utilization in its recorded history. At The Home Depot, listening to an internal partner ready to pull his product line from our supply chain revealed unnecessary delays in our process. Instead of defending it, I fixed it, and that product line moved from the 10th largest supplier position in the country to the 3rd. Here in Big Canoe, I bring that same approach to the POA Finance Committee and to Big Canoe Serves, which I co-founded. As a Board member, I would listen respectfully, evaluate facts objectively, and make transparent decisions that protect Big Canoe's character, infrastructure, and property values. SUBMIT A QUESTION

JOAN PULS-KIRCHNER I believe effective leadership requires clear communication and thoughtful listening which results in sound decision‑making. For Board members, these qualities are essential because every decision influences the community, its finances, and quality of life. My life and work experiences, listed below, have allowed me to demonstrate these leadership qualities in the areas that matter most. With that said, I find that growth and learning are a lifelong journey. Managing national and international accounts taught me to work with diverse groups, negotiate effectively, build consensus, and communicate complex issues clearly. As a financial advisor, I learned to balance immediate needs with long‑term obligations and make decisions that protect financial stability. Leading operations across multiple retail locations reinforced the importance of planning, budgeting, prioritization, and accountability. Being the VP of our HOA in Florida, I know that large communities can easily get tangled in rumors or misunderstandings. Residents deserve clear communication on issues, options considered, and the reasoning behind decisions. As a certified life coach, I’ve learned to listen closely and appreciate different perspectives. We won’t agree on every issue, but people should always feel heard and trust that decisions are made thoughtfully and responsibly. My hotel management experience strengthened those skills. Hospitality is fundamentally about people--understanding needs, solving problems, managing teams, and ensuring everyone feels respected.
