Welcome

Our islands are once again thriving, with businesses reopening daily and a real feeling of hope and joy. I am happy to report BIG ARTS is also thriving and proud to have been an integral part of our beloved community since 1979. This year we have created one of the most engaging, entertaining, and inspiring lineup of offerings in our history. The 2025/26 Season includes:

• a rich variety of art classes and the return of our popular pottery classes

• a blockbuster performing arts series of internationally recognized professional talent

• a documentary film festival in the fall and captivating films every Monday evening

• rotating fine arts exhibits featuring local, national, and international artists in our three galleries

• a new lecture program dubbed Conversations

Conversations is an exciting new experience featuring well-known journalists, educators, politicians, and historians whose perspectives, ideas, and expertise will provide an opportunity for stimulating audience participation. This season’s guests include Margaret Hoover of PBS, the always engaging James Carville, and Bill Kristol — revered journalist and commentator. If early ticket sales are any indication, Conversations is off to a great start!

Conversations

Conversations is an interactive experience with renowned experts and commentators on a range of topical issues and subjects. It is a platform free of political grandstanding or campaign messaging. Rather, it is a lively, thoughtful, informative and civil discussion of ideas and issues. You are invited to join the speakers after each Conversation for a reception where beverages and bites will be served.

Margaret Hoover, great granddaughter of President Herbert Hoover, journalist, commentator, and distinguished host of a popular PBS primetime interview show, and Democrat James Carville, the “Ragin’ Cajun” political strategist, will come together in Christensen Performance Hall to share their perspectives on a range of compelling topical issues. They invite you into the conversation with a stimulating and engaging Q&A period.

Bill Kristol will share his thoughts and ideas gleaned from a decades-long distinguished political career in leadership roles in the Reagan and George H.W. Stirner returns to BIG ARTS with a powerful exhibition of two- and three-dimensional works including maquettes of large-scale outdoor sculptures and photographic collages inspired by his global travels. Known for bold abstract forms and innovative use of

industrial materials, Stirner bridges the spirit and the tactile in works that span everything from intimate studies to monumental public installations.

THE PROFOUND DRAMA OF THE ORDINARY RENÉ MIVILLE

MARCH 20 - APRIL 26

Artist Reception: Friday, March 20

Miville, an innovator in the process of chemical manipulation using the classic darkroom printing method, created a substantial body of work in the late 1980s and early 1990s, at the dawn of digital photography. Each work consists of silver gelatinpaper with the basic chemical elements of developer, stop, and fixer applied; a pure photograph as we know one. However, he painted the chemistry on the photo paper. Miville’s opposing aesthetic journey sparked a vigorous curiosity and interest among museum curators and international collectors.

From hands-on classes and workshops to inspiring youth programs and scholarships, the BIG ARTS Arts Education Department offers opportunities for artists of all ages and skill levels to grow and thrive!

ADULT CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

BIG ARTS Workshops are grounded in more than four decades of history. In fact, BIG ARTS was created by a dedicated group of local artists who gathered to support one another and contribute to the community’s artistic vibrancy. They believed BIG ARTS should celebrate the artist in all of us, and that vision remains to this day. Over the years, it has grown into a vibrant array of classes led by seasoned instructors, spanning visual arts, crafts, pottery, wine & art mixers, and more!

Each year, BIG ARTS offers a curated selection of workshops led by nationally recognized master artists across a variety of mediums. These classes provide invaluable insights into the creative process, techniques and professional practices of accomplished artists.

BIG ARTS Youth Classes offer creative opportunities for kids to express their inner artist through visual arts across a variety of mediums. 2025 featured classes inspired by the modern art movement. Details about the 2026 program will be announced in springstay tuned!

BIG ARTS PERFORMING AND CREATIVE ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Since 1998, the BIG ARTS Scholarship Program has supported high school and college students from Lee County in their pursuit of higher education in the visual and performing arts. In 2025, the program proudly awarded scholarships to six talented students. Congratulations to Jordyn Barrett, Kareema Colson, Sarah Conley, Hazel Fitzpatrick, José Antonio Gonzalez, and Kathleen Ireland!

Outreach Programs

BIG ARTS Outreach Programs foster partnerships with community development, educational, and healthcare organizations, opening new pathways of healing and communication through the arts. These programs provide opportunities for creative engagement and expression to under-served members of the community and healthcare workers in Lee County.

VISUAL ARTS FIELD TRIPS THE HEIGHTS CENTER OF LEE COUNTY

Every summer, BIG ARTS engages more than 120 kids in gallery visits and makeand-take art activities, encouraging creative growth through visual arts.

The Heights Foundation works to build strong, self-sufficient families in the Harlem Heights neighborhood of Lee County by supporting education and wellness, and promoting family and community development.

ART ENRICHMENT CLASSES PACE CENTER FOR GIRLS OF LEE COUNTY

BIG ARTS helps Pace Girls earn credits toward graduation by offering art enrichment programing during the summer session.

Pace provides girls and young women an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training, and advocacy.

ART RETREATS FOR CAREGIVERS LEE HEALTH

BIG ARTS provides healthcare workers with creative, therapeutic outlets to process emotions, reduce stress, and foster community through activities like Zentangle, Neurographic, and acrylic pour painting.
