Welcome to Bicycle Colorado’s new look! In celebration of our 25th anniversary, we completely refreshed our logo and website. Our mission remains the same; we are a dedicated group of passionate advocates working to make Colorado the #1 state for bicycling.

Now we’re looking ahead to the next 25 years. The landscape of active transportation and human-powered recreation is changing rapidly and dramatically (see p. 2). Research is shining a bright light on the significant health, economic, social and community benefits that bicycling provides. A statewide study released in December (see p. 4) proves that bicycling provides significant benefits to the state. The Colorado Pedals Project has entered its second year with multiple successes toward making bicycling safer and more widespread. Bicyclecolorado.org is the home of that work—work that has only just begun. Our new website and logo are intended to be approachable for a broad audience of people who ride and love bicycles. The site retains its advocacy focus, connecting you to important issues in active transportation, educational opportunities and events, and stories of how Bicycle Colorado’s work—fueled by your membership and your passion—is improving riding statewide. Use it to follow and act on transportation and bike funding issues being raised in the state legislature, which was in session through May 10. The website’s events listing, one of Bicycle Colorado’s most popular resources, has been overhauled to prominently feature the state’s best bicycling events. New this year is a free event listing that will allow cycling clubs, community groups and others to welcome people to their rides, races and clinics across the state. Everyone is welcome to explore and contribute to this resource. And as always, you can find Colorado bicycling maps and information on each of our education and outreach programs on our website. When you visit our new website, make sure to sign up for our bi-monthly email newsletters to keep up with our work. Finally, don’t forget to click on the shop link in the upper right corner to purchase hats, shirts, and jerseys featuring the new logo. All of your purchases directly support bicycle advocacy.

Letter from Ella and Dan The days of transportation balance are gone. It’s time to prioritize biking, walking and transit. Bicycling and walking advocates now find ourselves at the forefront of modernizing transportation planning, design and funding. In Colorado, the future of our state’s transportation system is in play, but much more is at stake than just dollars. The transportation system we’re using is decades old, as are the ideas that guide its design. Our communities are designed around moving motor vehicles at high speeds but it’s no longer working. Colorado road fatalities increased again in 2016. Congestion is at an all-time high, frustrating people who have no other options. Bicycling and walking are still seen as afterthoughts. Communities across the globe are changing transportation in ways that are leaving Colorado’s system behind. Their secret is to stop trying to “balance” bicycling and walking with driving, which is code for high-speed roads that are expensive, dangerous and unhealthy—even for drivers. Now is the time to prioritize multi-modal options. For stronger communities, vibrant businesses and healthy people, bicycling and walking must come first. If we want to see improvements in the environment, public health, road safety, locally-owned businesses and livability of communities, our streets need to be designed to prioritize multi-modal options. For example, a recent study found that just a 10 percent increase in bicycling and walking in Colorado would prevent an additional 30-40 deaths per year and lead to $258-$387 million in additional annual health savings to the state (see page 4 for more information). Studies have found that building more highways doesn’t reduce traffic. In fact, it increases the volume of motorists and generates even more traffic. Instead, streets need to be designed to give people and safety priority. In places where this has happened, roads work better for all users (including drivers). Multi-modal design benefits people of all types, provides for freedom of transportation choice and has been shown to foster respect among drivers for people walking or riding bikes. Brent Toderian, a city planner from Vancouver and the keynote at our Moving People Forward conference, said, “Progress doesn’t just depend on starting the right things. It depends on stopping the wrong things and fixing the mistakes.” We are working with the state, cities and towns to modernize our transportation system by putting people and options first. This is not just about bikes; it’s about a better future for all Coloradans and our visitors. Ella Lyons Board President

Our summit is a one-day program designed to educate and empower attendees, identify common bicycling issues and solutions in our communities, and set priorities for improving the future of bicycling in Colorado. We hope you’ll join us to learn best practices for making change happen at the city, county and state levels, and network with more than 250 bicycle enthusiasts and advocates from across the state.

Moving People Forward conference puts Bicycle Colorado at the forefront of statewide mobility discussions In February, we hosted a new and highly successful conference tackling big ideas around the future of transportation. Nearly 250 mobility advocates, city planners, elected officials and interested citizens gathered to learn about and discuss ways to transform our streets to be better, safer and more usable for all.
Advocates gather to lobby legislators on Safe Streets Day at the Capitol Safe Streets Day on March 1 replaced our longstanding lobby day that had always been a part of the Colorado Bicycle Summit (now held in October). We gathered nearly 100 advocates and empowered them to use their voices to support bicycling issues facing our state. Attendees were able to tell their elected officials and legislative staff why safe streets are critical, share personal stories about the important roles that bicycles play in their lives, and emphasize the need for more infrastructure to enable safe, accessible transportation and recreation. This legislative session was one of the most active for bicycling and transportation issues in years--we worked on six pieces of legislation having to do with bicycle safety and infrastructure funding. As with all political movements, the stronger our collective voice, the better. We greatly appreciate everyone who has attended an event, written a letter or made a phone call. Personal stories from constituents make a difference!
Bicycle Colorado leading Denver coalition to push for a more people-centric transportation future In late 2016, Bicycle Colorado formed the Denver Streets Partnership, a group of active transportation organizations in Denver, with the goal to increase city funding for bike-ped infrastructure and complete Denver’s walking and bicycling networks. Partnership members include Bicycle Colorado, BikeDenver, WalkDenver, Denver Cruiser Ride, Denver B-cycle and Denver Vision Zero. Denver Streets Partnership, under our leadership, is calling on Mayor Michael Hancock and Denver City Council members to increase annual dedicated city funding for sidewalks, bike lanes and B-cycle to $40 million in order to meet city goals and complete the networks.

2016 Accomplishments A significant achievement preceeding much of this was the ability to expand our staff by three members. They allow us to focus more closely on the Colorado Department of Transportation, making Denver a model bicycling city and expanding our events to connect to the community more deeply. Advocacy & Policy •
Collaborated on the Colorado Economic and Health Impact of Biking and Walking study, released late 2016, on the significant benefits those two activities provide to our state (see some of the data on the preceding page). We’re leading efforts to get this information in front of decision makers, elected officials, planners and funders at all levels so they understand why bicycling is so valuable to Colorado.

Helped CDOT put together its inaugural Complete Streets Summit for executive, engineering, maintenance and planning staff, which encouraged the regions to experiment with innovative bike/pedestrian designs.
•
Hosted bicycle rides for business leaders, transportation and park planners, state and city employees and advocates to show changemakers great bicycling projects across Colorado and areas where improvement is still needed.
•
Established monthly meetings with the governor’s staff and Colorado’s “Bike Czar” to strengthen collaboration on the goals of the Colorado Pedals Project.
•
Helped launch “Project Shift,” a grassroots leadership program to empower 40 individuals to lead car-lite lifestyles in their own communities and help others in their neighborhoods gain the freedom and ability to lead full lives without depending on a car.
•
Conducted a successful survey of Denver voters that shows 75 percent of Denverites support building out the Denver Moves Bikes Plan, 66 percent ride a bicycle and a majority favor increasing funding for bicycling infrastructure.

Education & Community •
Under the Safe Routes to School program, conducted six train-the-trainer sessions, six parent workshops and 15 education and encouragement programs in 13 Colorado communities.

Launched t he pilot season of the Bicycle Colorado Bike School through which 37 children and 57 adults learned to ride a bike for the first time.
•
Collaborated with Children’s Hospital Colorado to provide education for 23 of its “Bikes for Life” clinics, helping 104 children develop healthier habits through bicycling.
•
Worked to connect partners in communities with CDOT staff for the purpose of being more proactive in identifying opportunities to improve street safety and bicycle access.
•
Worked with LiveWell Colorado to provide active transportation technical assistance to Montrose, Edgewater and Leadville. Bicycle Colorado staff met with city employees, elected officials and other stakeholders in each location to advance complete streets projects and trail connections so that each city is more bikeable and walkable.
